I am in! I haven't posted for a while and my running has fallen off a little, actually a lot! My total for January was 41km so February totals will be 54km.
No races booked at all for this year. Good luck everyone5 -
2/1- 8.1
2/2- REST
2/3- 4.23
2/4- 14.11
Total: 26.44
Monthly goals:
Mileage goal: 150
Real Goal: Stay healthy enough to get into the swing of real marathon training.
Today's notes: EMBRACE THE SUCK. 14.11 miles at 9:47 pace for a new distance PR by 0.11 miles. Moderately slow pace and high HR made for a less than enjoyable run, but I got it in. On the bright side, I ran that distance PR with absolutely zero calf/achilles/shin pain, so I'll have to call it a success. The rest of today, and tomorrow, will be dedicated to recovery and eating...and a little 3 miler tomorrow.10 -
@KatieJane83 Congrats on "that feeling" I've run a couple 8 milers within a 1 mile radius of my house. Lol.
I've been trying to decide if running Fri/Sat/Sun is too much since I'm coming back off 2 low hit-and-miss months. I finally decided I will focus today on taking down the Christmas trees and stuff and plan to run every other day - so Fri/Sun/Tues. I just don't want to overdo it and regret it.3 -

@MNLittleFinn I'm glad I'm not the only one! I took down the outdoor lights our first week back from Mayo so this weekend needs to be indoor. Boo.0

Slow and cold long run this morning. 18 degrees F with cold wind, but at least the sun was out. It was beautiful with the fresh snow everywhere. Unfortunately that meant the nice trails were too snowy so we kept to the plowed roads in the park/golf course area - which means hills. My legs are wobbly tired. I also didn't start the Garmin properly for the first 5 minutes so grrrr, should be over 7 miles really. Oh well.
Stella seems to be recovering from her stomach troubles so I'm sure she'll be raring to go out pretty soon for a hike but I need to warm up!

Hi all
Goal: 100k
2/2: 3.1k easy, incline
2/4: 1.2k -abandoned
Yesterday and today I had two attempts to run properly and both failed. My adductor - inner quad- is suffering and now i figure out that it is impossible to run the 20k trail run tomorrow, so bb race. I was about to ask your opinion whether to race or not but things made clear on their own. I guess it's rest time for awhile.
Races:
2/5 -20k- trail race1 -
@katharmonic nice run this morning. Hope you have a wonderful hike later!
@NikolaosKey sorry to hear about your running troubles! I hope you can heal up soon!0 -
9.3 wet and stormy kilometres today. It's been warm (for February) the last week, and raining all the time. I figured the only good thing about that would be that the lower parts of the mountain roads would be mostly free of snow, so I headed over there today.
In the end, I couldn't get as high up as I had hoped before the road got too icy and I had to turn back. That was probably a good thing, since I was completely drenched by that point already, and the storm that had been predicted for later today began to pick up. With the wind in my face, running downhill back to the car was almost harder than the way up had been! And I could hardly see a thing because I had to take off my glasses and was squinting my eyes shut against the rain. #RunningIsAwesome
Of course, now that I'm home, the rain has stopped and the wind is dying down. There's days I swear the weather just wants to annoy me ^^10 -
Quick update on my 10k this morning. Well, since it was my first 10k, the PR pressure was off, but I was still hoping to come in under 46 minutes. My concerns were that my hamstring has been a bit tight and also the cold weather. 13F at race start. Neither of these turned out to be a factor, and I ended up running very well, coming in at exactly 45 minutes (and then forgetting to stop my Garmin for a few seconds...again). The disappointment however, is that the course measured short. I am pretty sure it was accurate and Garmin is the problem, because all of the time was lost on the first mile, the majority of which was through a tunnel. I hit the mile one flag and my Garmin was reading 0.83. My Garmin finally hit mile 1 when I came out of the tunnel and recorded a lap pace of 7:50. My half marathon PR pace is 7:37, so I am quite certain I was running faster then that. All of the other miles were spot on at the .83 mark and my paces were ranging between 7:09 and 7:24. When I look at the Strava data, I can tell for certain by the map that it just did a straight line from point A to point B where the tunnel was, which was not the actual line we took. So all in all, the evidence suggests that the course was accurate and my time was firm, but of course it still bothers me that it measures short. Even though nobody else gets why this bothers me, I am sure you guys understand!
There was no results tent and official results have not yet posted on the website. Because the second part of the course was an out an back, I was able to tell by the people ahead of me that I was likely the 11th or 12th overall female, or so I think.14 -
A chilly run, but the sun was shining!!2 -
Great first 10k @lporter2290

I know I keep saying I am going to catch up here... I miss all of you and following what and how you are all doing. As I posted earlier this week on my news feed - Work is interfering with my life and I hate it because I work to live and not the other way around! Hoping during the game tomorrow I can read over what you all have been doing!
I was tapering this week for my race tomorrow which was good because work mostly kept me from running anyways. I did get out for a couple of evening runs and yesterday I just ended up going for a fast walk with Hobbes because it was already dark out when I finally got up from my desk. I have been in back to back meetings from early morning until well past my normal end of day and then coming back and working more after dinner to get done what I couldn't during the meetings... I did make my stand goal every day because I made myself get up and stretch, walk around my office, etc. while I was on the meeting calls. I did not get to 10,000 steps except the days I ran though. It is really bad when you look at your activity monitor at 1:00 or 2:00 and only have 700 steps! I am really hoping the entire month isn't going to be like this but I already have 2 trips scheduled this month so I am not feeling too positive.
I also saw the cardiologist yesterday - I have a very low HR normally and I have been having some issues when running or working out where I get dizzy and out of breath for no apparent reason. They did a 24 hour monitor test and as he said it was 'not normal' but they don't want to do anything at this time... he also said while he wasn't going to tell me I couldn't run or work out, he wants me to be very aware of my body, how I feel and to stop if I don't feel right. <Sigh> While I am glad I can still do what I love it scares the crap out of me. So for the race tomorrow, I just want to finish. I don't feel like I have trained really, especially with traveling. I certainly haven't gotten in the miles I typically would. It should be perfect running weather, mid to low 50's and partly cloudy. The same race last year was in the 80s! The race is right along the ocean, we actually run on Pacific Coast Hwy so it should also be great scenery. I love to run there! Then it will be home to watch the Super Bowl (commercials).

My completed and upcoming Races - Let me know if you will be running too!
02/05/17 - Surf City Half Marathon
07/23/17 - San Francisco 1st Half Marathon8 -
2/3 - Ran mellow dirt trails through old mining tunnels. 7.3mi, 419ft vertical. Pretty flat. Slow/easy pace: 9:56/mi, with headwind. Gusts to 50mph. "Am I making forward progress?" That lean tho. Oh ya, this morning while eating Cinnamon toast crunch cereal, I decided to sign up for Vegas Hot Chocolate 15k. Day after Blood Sweat and Beers trail race which I'm going all out. Should be a decent double. Fast recovery run / maybe tempo with negative splits. Or 15k death slog haha. Pray for cold and clouds.
2/1 - 60min boring gym cardio
2/2 - 10 mi (trail) 1,043ft vert
2/3 - 7.3mi (trail) 419ft vert
Total: 17.3/100mi
Upcoming races
2/25: Blood Sweat and Beers 10k (mtn)
2/26: Vegas Hot Chocolate 15k
4/29: REVEL Mt Charleston (HM)
I hope Blood Sweat and Beers is cooler than it was last year. Seems I always bring record high temps to Vegas with me. That was supposed to be my first marathon, but I dropped out somewhere just before halfway. The volunteers at the water station said they didn't expect anyone to come from the direction I arrived from. I was pretty lost. Decided to drop out before I fell down the trail. The Hot Chocolate 15k the next day was pretty fun, though - even though it was 90 degrees. I was pretty excited that there was a backup race in case the marathon fell through for me. And since it did...2 -
2/1/17 - 6 miles

I understand, but still hope you can be talked off of this ledge. The gadget on your wrist does the best it can, and so do the guys who certify the course. Both are subject to a number of variables, but barring an extreme foul-up a certified course is the more accurate of the two. Why let a small thing like this bother you? You had a great race, beat your goal by a minute, and conquered some crappy cold conditions to boot. Be happy!

@greenolivetree and @MNLittleFinn There's a house that I run by in the mornings, and it still has its Christmas tree up, fully lit and everything. I'm kinda wondering now just how far into the year it'll get before it comes down!
--
So today was race day with the Dallas Hot Chocolate 15K. Overall the event went relatively smoothly; there was a threat of rain at the very beginning but that quickly went away. There was also a mix up with the corrals meaning that everyone that was supposed to be in the corral behind me ended up mixed in with the corral ahead of me, and by the time the official realized his mistake and moved further back, it was too late and the runners just stayed where they were. That meant a pretty slow start where I spent a while trying to make my way through the slower-paced runners. But in the end, here were my results:
Finish time: 01:16:19
Overall position: 296th out of 4,590
Males: 203rd out of 1,276
M45-49 group: 32nd out of 220
I personally think I would have been able to break 1:15:00 if I hadn't had such a slow start which would have put me inside the top 250, but ah well, I'm still pleased with the results.
03 - 2.24 miles
04 - 9.30
Total: 11.54 / 1255 -
Thanks @Calvin2008Brian! I know you are right.
Official results posted. Chip time 44:56. 2/33AG, 10/353F and 2/537 OA. Completely happy with that!6 -
2/1 Zumba
2/2 7 miles
2/3 6 miles
2/4 Zumba + strength training
@greenolivetree and @MNLittleFinn I'm joining your tree-dismantling party, that's my project for this weekend too! Lol
Tomorrow brings my 9 mile long run, which will round out my first of two 28 mile weeks, and then after that I'll be hitting the 30's for the first time ever! Woot! I'm really trying to focus on getting some strength training in, and stretching and foam rolling after every run and workout. Since I'll be building so much mileage this year, I really really really want to avoid injury as best I can!
Total: 13/1162 -
@greenolivetree, @MNLittleFinn and @garygse - My daughter lives in Seattle and they still have their lights up - not sure about the tree. I was surprised at how many houses and businesses did too. She said it makes it so much brighter and less dreary when it is so dark, rainy and overcast and many keep them up through February!

2/1: 2.2 miles walk, 6.3 miles bike
2/2: Rest/PT
2/3: 45 mins elliptical intervals
2/4: 10 miles bike
TOTAL: 3/22 workout days
Since I am cleared to use the elliptical now, I tried out an elliptical interval workout yesterday - 5 min warmup, 11 x 2 min hard/2 min easy, 6 min cooldown for a total of 45 minutes. I definitely got my heart rate up much more than with the walking, cycling, and even swimming that I've been doing lately and can feel it in my legs that I got a good workout in. Today was 45 minutes/10 miles on the bike at a steady moderate pace. I plan to get back on the elliptical tomorrow for a longer but easier pace with idea of going for about the same length of time and effort as a long run (ideally 60-90 minutes but we'll see when the boredom sets in). I also am going to be incorporating a few more strength exercises in because it seems like my main issue at PT and getting back to running is lack of balance, which ultimately is the result of lack of strength. I am definitely still going to be doing the exercises my PT gave me several times a week (as prescribed) but I've got a few more that I'm going to add in so that I'm rotating through the muscle groups throughout the week. Hopefully this will help me start seeing results with the balance issue. I focused on core yesterday morning and did some arm machines before the bike at the gym today.
@JessicaMcB So sorry to hear about your husband's uncle
@Orphia Exciting news about parkrun! I'm glad that it is now making it's way to the US. I guess one of their inaugural events in the US was just about an hour north of me.
@KatieJane83 I do that in and out thing too sometimes to add in some mileage without having to do an extra loop...I've gotten some strange looks from the neighbors sometimes!
@MNLittleFinn Congrats on a great long run and new distance PR
@shanaber Scary about the heart issue you are dealing with! Sounds like you may have a lower key running month due to work but that might not be such a bad thing for you right now if you're not feeling 100% while you run. Hope you are able to get the heart issue sorted out so that it doesn't keep you from running as much as you are able. Enjoy your race tomorrow!
@lporter229 Congrats on a great first 10k!
@garygse Frustrating about the start, but still great time nonetheless!

@autumnblade75 Ya me too! But I live in Vegas so I get to heat train alot. It definitely effects me. But the more I run in it (temps above 80) the more I get used to it. 100f+ always feels like death haha. I did a night race in June and it was 108f still ridiculously hot. I was at Hot Chocolate last yr too. Ran quickly and it wasn't to bad. Pray for cold n clouds haha. Hell of a choice for a first marathon! Bada$$1 -
2/4 - TM tempo / progressive run. 4.32mi, 7.1 - 8.6mph, finishing at 6:58/mi pace (8:09/mi avg). New shoes, Brooks Launch 3. Felt awesome! Like speed shoes running on clouds. Buying more today.

1 FEB: 2 miles
4 FEB: 2 miles
4 of 40, 0 of 8 cross training
Did an easy-paced out and back on a gravel path near home. I planned to go up to 4 miles if I felt ok, but decided to pull the plug midway. Still not over this cold bug, and didn't see much reason to push it today. All in all, nice to be outside and moving a bit. It's sunny, breezy, and about 25F here today. Planning a gym workout tomorrow morning.
Hey, if you like running podcasts, here is a new one to check out. I listened to the first episode today. Carrie Tollefson has been doing video mini-casts for a long while, but just a few weeks ago the C Tolle Run production transitioned to an audio-only longer form podcast. It's on iTunes. Carrie gets great guests and always does interesting interviews, so this should be fun. The first episode was with triathlon gold medalist Gwen Jorgensen.
Have a great rest of the weekend, all. Happy running!
