RE - love your mini nsv
HEATHER - glad you weren't caught up in the London outrage
Had to return my FitBit to Amazon yesterday and new one doesn't arrive until Tuesday have installed Mapmywalk on phone so will see what happens. Not sure if I will go to the gym this week as I am having cataract surgery next Friday and I pay gym on a monthly basis so not sure how soon after surgery I can go back to exercise
Note to me - do not use this as excuse to overeat
DH has planted his tomato seeds and we have decided to plant crysanthemums. We used to grow them when kids were young and they used to take bunches of them to school
Enjoyed my Spanish visit but made me realise that DH is not as fit as he was, he does have reduced lung capacity but if he paces himself he's ok. I used to leave him reading his newspaper on a bench in the sun while I walked. I need to get him to exercise a bit more but you know what they're like. Threatened to trade him in for a younger model HaHa
Need to do more laundry put stuff in crockpot and do some exercise vids and KB swings

Happy weekend everyone! My DH is away until Monday visiting a friend in Rome. I was supposed to go, but our friend's wife was away and I could not see myself trudging through Rome with two giants on my own. Already I have to take two steps for every one of my husband's and his friend is not far from seven feet tall (they met playing basketball). I was doubly happy with my decision when my DH called this morning and told me about the heavy meal they had last night. My calorie goal for the entire week would have been blown! I have three whole days of the house to myself and plan to enjoy every minute.
Chris: sorry to hear about your son and daughter-in-law's dog, but what great news about your weight loss!
Lenora: my heart goes out to you for all your experiences with the medical community; I try to avoid mainstream doctors whenever I can.
Becca: you look lovely in the photo!
Gloria: what a lovely photo, a perfect angel!
Paula: I had to laugh when I read about the woman and the door knob!

vlvo544grl wrote: »All righty - I read through most of the comments from this week and all of you seem so nice! It also seems like you've known each other for quite a while too. As I mentioned in my post from earlier today, I'm new to MFP and this group.
So - a few things about me:
I turn 51 in May. Single, no kids, gainfully employed.
When I turned 40, I became athletic for the first time in my adult life. Started doing triathlons (Olympic Distance); half marathons and Century Rides (100 mile bike rides).
Two years ago I started having all sorts of issues from menopause/perimenopause. Uterine surgeries, hormones, hot-flashes, sleepless nights, 4:30 Am wake-ups and weight gain. And more weight gain. And exhaustion. And who has time to spend 20 hours a week training for a triathlon or century ride? not only that, but I have brain fog and can't think long enough to plan anything.
In fact, pour me some wine, feed me chocolate, give me a fan and leave me alone, because I also dislike most people most days.
Doctor changed up my hormones three months ago. Now I like most people most days. Wine doesn't taste that great anymore. Sleeping is really, really fun since I can finally sleep through the night. Without sweating. Without a 4:30 AM wake-up.
Through it all, I went from size 6 to size 12 (well, who knows, everything I own now is stretchy fabric).
To combat it all, I signed up for a Century Ride (100 miles) for 5/6. A ride through Napa, CA. Figured that should motivate me to train. Think of food as fuel instead of reward.
I was riding 4 days a week through most of MAR, (20 miles x2, 25 miles x 1 and 40 x1) but the rains came back to Northern Cali and it threw my riding schedule off.
I've just turned 50.
I was interested in your post because I'm a long distance cyclist.
I was actively into audax/randonneuring until 2009 when I moved from Canada to Australia ... and developed DVT. That sidelined me for a while, and I gained a bit of weight, but I battled to get back into it a little bit. Then my husband and I travelled the world for 8 months, partially by bicycle, but that's when I gained the rest of my weight.
We moved to a very hilly place (Tasmania) and I found the cycling extremely difficult ... hauling all that weight up the hills.
Late 2014, I started getting back into the cycling and in early 2015 I joined MFP to lose the weight. I did just that in two sets of 16 weeks each ... and in 2016, I got back into audax/randonneuring and completed centuries, 200Ks, a 300K, a 400K, and 400 km of a 600K. Good to be back!
Meanwhile, in about 2011, I started up with the perimenopause. Unfortunately, I have a genetic disorder which caused the DVT and also means that going onto hormones will kill me. So no hormones. My gynaecological-oncologist (I have pre-cancer of the female organs too, yay) told me that he is even very reluctant to do surgery because of this genetic disorder.
So ... since 2011, I've gone through all sorts of wonderful perimenopause symptoms, and I'm still going through it all. I've had to manage it with alternative options. I've never been a "vitamins" sort of person, and here I'm taking evening primrose oil and all sorts of things now.
It does make the long distance cycling and training for the long distance cycling challenging ... but I'm just so pleased to be back into it all again.

Welcome Denise . my favorite quote this week "Strategy is stronger than will power ". So like Becca says: meal plan, knock out the trigger foods from your house and have choices available when you're stuck somewhere with lousy food choices. Keep logging and moving and checking in with us, this works! And perimenopause is not forever.
I forget who was in the gym checking out the guys lifting but that just made me laugh, laugh, laugh
Ginger I'm going to make an accountability list and start including it here cause I'm going off the rails a bit and hurting myself with night time eating. I think some accountability, little goals with strategy attached will help with what's going on here. I've got this?!?!
Re look at you forgetting to eat chocolate

Did about 45 minutes of a Les Mills strength Training DVD. Not sure what the plan will be for tomorrow since I'll be at Jess'. I do have some yoga/pilates DVD's with me. They don't take a whole lot of room to do. She called this morning and said that she usually leaves for work around 7. It really won't be a problem for me to leave early, as a matter of fact, if I leave early I might get home in time for ceramics and mahjongg.
Re - yea for you forgetting to eat that chocolate! Wonderful!
Kate - good luck on the surgery, even tho it's a ways away
Happy Birthday Barbie!

Not sure who was reading Bootleggers Daughter but I just got a copy I ordered second hand through Amazon, it is an ex-library copy from Winthrop Public Library in Massachusetts. It came from Better World Books, as a librarian I often sent discarded books to them. Never realised they received books from USA

Good morning ladies! Just checking in really quick before I head out for my errand running.
Mia The Kitchen Beach Party was for my daycare kids as our "make up your own holiday" day. I didn't tell them what our holiday was, just to dress in clothes with no pockets or cuffs (less sand spread through my house). When they walked in yesterday morning they were ECSTATIC! We did sand art and played with kinetic sand for our other activities. Of course we had SANDwiches for lunch. Sandbox was torn down this morning and the sand hauled into my backyard sandbox. I did keep some and stored it in a tub, to use for crafting and sensory play. I am counting the take down and sand hauling as my work out today. It took me about half an hour to tear down and haul all 250 lbs to the back yard!
Denise- Welcome! Great support from these ladies! I am also one of the younger ones (turned 50 last November). I was thin as a child/teen/into my 30s; then I hit 40 and perimenopause (about 43) and the weight began to creep on. Because I am 5'8, and the weight distributed itself pretty evenly, it was easy to ignore it for quite a while. Now I am 80 lbs over my "best/goal" weight. And at 50 and menopausal, things are beginning to complain (my feet, mainly). This group helps me keep my sanity and keep my eating in check. I was a runner for a few years in my 40s, then a work injury (yes, I was injured by a two year old) sidelined my running for almost a year as my knee and ankle recovered. I haven't gotten back into running yet. But I am beginning to boost my walking so I can be running by summer. I miss it! The endorphins are the BEST!
Chris- So sorry about your dog! Yea on being your lowest weight!
Heather- Love your pic of you and your brother! Your eyes have not changed!
Well, taking care of the "beach" has put me behind schedule. I will try to jump on in a bit. ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)1 -

Barbie, Happy Birthday! Thanks for your inspiration and help keeping this great group going. Hoping you get lots of special attention today from your walking partners and Jake too, lol.
Katla, I too find I'm on here lots more than Facebook. Getting to know everyone has been a very good thing. Glad the river is staying within its banks.
And regarding raccoons, they are cute as the dickens but I prefer them far, far away. When we had the farm they got into the chicken coop one night and killed most of our hens. I know if Sophie had a run-in with one, she'd get the raw end of the deal. I'm a little more forgiving of possums as they do a good job of "clean-up" and eat insects and worms, but still don't like them close as I think they are vectors for disease/possibly rabies. I heard they'll eat eggs, not sure if they wipe out chickens too. As far as we can tell they didn't join the feeding frenzy. We put out a trap on the farm after the massacre and managed to trap one of the remaining hens! I can't recall but I think DH found the culprit in the barn and gave it lead poisoning.
Denise, welcome! Jump right on in. You can see how we roll here....
Becca, that photo of you and DH is so cute! He looks very snazzy and you are adorable - look at your gorgeous wavy hair. Poo or no poo, I am jealous. My hair would be a frizzy rat's nest close to the water like that.
Lenora, thank you for sharing more of your journey with kids and the medical community. Thankfully there are very good nurses and doctors who see us as whole persons and help us deal with our issues, sometimes it takes a bit of searching to find them tho. Glad you have a psychiatrist who is taking good care of you.
Paula, that lady who didn't want to shake hands - yes, if it was germs she was afraid of the doorknob got her good anyhow. Sometimes folks find hand-shaking painful if their arthritis is acting up, but most of the time they'll mention that.
Heather, loved that photo of you and your brother. I used to watch "Call the Midwife" - always thought it was interesting it was set during a time when I was a little one. That would have been your era as well.
RE - WTG getting DH to go to the gym with you - taco's sounded YUMMY! Good job ignoring that chocolate. I'm hard of hearing in one ear but I can generally hear chocolate - it's on a "special" wavelength I guess, lol.
Here's a thought for the day:

Good morning all -
Beth - I had my first experience of cooking with phyllo dough recently, and it went the same way. Dry and nearly impossible to work with. Nice to know that's not necessarily the way it's supposed to be. If I try it again I'll buy the dough from a bigger supermarket or specialty store in Austin instead of our local grocery.
Becca - I watch 600+ now and then too, for much the same reason. It does make my problems seem much smaller, plus it's a reminder of the consequences of not losing the excess weight.
Chris - You have my heartfelt sympathy. It's never easy to lose a pet. They find their way so deep into our hearts that they never really leave us.
Gotta run - we're brunching with friends today, then I think I'll run down to Dad's river house since my sister and brother-in-law are there. My brother made me a beautiful garden bench for Christmas, and hopefully I can finally bring it home.

Kim from N. California - like your suggestion for tracking and recording online accounts and passwords.
When my husband died suddenly I had no idea what accounts were open (like for bills), which ones were paid via snail mail and the passwords for anything other than my few accounts.
This was a very bad time. I didn't know the Admin passwords for the computer, WiFi or the router when things suddenly went toes up and the only fix was to get into those accounts. I cried so many tears over the keyboard for over a year. Then I swore I would not leave my daughter in the same state if I passed away.
I have an Excel spreadsheet where I track all my accounts, passwords, links, account numbers and contact phone numbers. I keep it on my desktop AND a print copy on my computer desk just in case the computer is unavailable or crashed.
Yeah, I know this is a total no no from a security prospective, but I have already experienced the other side of the coin and this is a better option for me. Folks, please think about your online accounts, they are very important and if something happens to you, someone will have to pick up the pieces of your online presence, make it less painful for them. They will love you even more for thinking of them this way.

Happy Birthday, Barbie!
Becca ... Lovely photo ... and I really like your hairstyle in that photo too! Shorter hair is very becoming to you!
Lenora ... thank you for sharing the poem. You are so very right about the medical community. My older son has not always been served well, particularly when it comes to his mental health. The mental health community has a long way to go!
Kelly ... I am just so amazed at your energy and creativity when it comes to your daycare children! You are a very special person and those children are incredibly blessed!
Kim ... what kind of shoes are you looking for? I don't like the idea of you having wet feet while you work outside so much ...
The Baklava baked up well, so I'll plate it for the dessert auction.
Plan to plan out our meals this week. Both husband and I have been eating willy-nilly with the stress of the last week or so. Time to be done with that. I need to load the freezer with the things we like to eat that do not include the words "take out!" Husband found out before his surgery that he has crossed over to "pre diabetic" levels and his mother and all her sisters had diabetes, so this is an eye opener for him.
It's rainy and gloomy today ... but a perfect day for getting things done.

Re: Congratulations on forgetting to eat your chocolate!!!!! :flowerforyou:
Machka9: Our friend Pip is a cyclist. You might enjoy one another's perspective. Welcome to a great group of supportive women.
Barbie: Happy Birthday!
Lanette: I love your happiness cartoon! The river is still in its banks, but it is deeper this morning. We're keeping a watchful eye on it. We live in a place where FEMA flood insurance is a requirement. We'll take priceless mementos and emotionally significant things upstairs if we get nervous. Other things are replaceable. I really doubt it will come to that. :noway:
Becca & Yvonne: I've watched the My 600 Pound Life episodes a few times, but not recently. My heart breaks for those people & their families. My mom grew up fat, and fought the "Battle of the Bulge" for decades but she was not in the morbidly obese zone any time that I know about. She would've loved this group!
Charleen in CO: Great advice on finances. You've learned a hard lesson. Thanks for sharing. :flowerforyou:
Beth: Regarding doctors, recently the AARP magazine strongly suggested that we all look for female doctors because, according to AARP, they generally give better care. Our personal experience goes along with this advice. Our current primary care doctor is a young woman and does a great job for us. Mental health issues & nervous system problems are particularly challenging and too many doctors don't have a clue what to do when pills don't solve the problem. There is a lot of room for research and I hope for discoveries that will help people overcome difficulties without causing additional problems.
I have a riding lesson later today. Yay! I'm feeling enough better today that I plan to go rather than cancel. Double Yay!
