How did you meet your SO?

I always find this interesting about people, there is always a story.

I'll start...

I was newly single and my friends kept pushing me to get out there and start dating. After 15 years with the same person the thought of how to even begin to meet someone was scary.

One night my girlfriends and I were out drinking and they signed me up on a dating website unbeknownst to me until the next morning when my phone had all these weird notifications. I thought it was funny and scrolled through the message laughing. I responded to a few in a sarcastic snarky way for my own humor and this one guy responded to me just as snarky and sarcastic as I had. It got my attention.

We texted for a few days and he asked me to meet him that Friday night. I stood him up. I was not about to be locked in a closet and tortured by some creepo I had never met. He texted me a few days later and told me that I was wrong for having done that. I called him a girl and went on with my life.

A week later, I am at my cousins bar telling her about this and she asked to see picture. Turns out she knew the guy really well and told me I was an a-hole for ditching him.

As luck would have it, he text me again (I don't know why, I was mean to him) and with some convincing from my cousin I agreed to meet him.

It's been almost 4 years.

At my first job. He liked me, I didn't like him that way, but didn't dislike him either. We got to be good friends, and I decided to give him a chance. Never regretted it once.

At a New Years party hosted by my guitar player's girlfriend. She was his girlfriend's friend. It just happened.

Me, too! We weren't supposed to be the real deal. He was the hot new guy in accounting and we flirted on and off for about a year and a half before we got grabby in an elevator. (And then in a conference room, and the break room, and once in my office... it's really amazing that we didn't get caught. Jeez.) We were still working at the same place when we got married several years later, but we've both changed jobs since then.

He says the first time he saw me, he was SO embarrassed because I caught him checking me out when we passed in the hall. Which is hilarious, because it wasn't until years later that I explained that the only reason I CAUGHT him is that I was checking him out, too!

In college I worked in a package liquor store and she would come in once or twice per week to buy beer and we'd chat and flirt a little. I moved across town and started working at another location and sure enough, she started showing up there as well.

I thought one of two things...either she's a raging alcoholic and making multiple stops to get her booze, or she's stocking me.

As it turns out, we both moved at about the same time across town to within a couple of blocks of each other. It took me awhile, but I finally asked her out...we dated for 5 years and have been married going on 12.

I was a Licensed Massage Technician working in conjunction with a Chiropractic Clinic. My wife was referred to me for a Auto Accident. Saw her face down and naked on my massage table for two years. Couple times a week. When her claim was resolved, she started coming in about twice a month for a more relaxing massage. She was my last client one day and invited me out for a drink afterwards. 2 dates later, I asked her to marry me. That was 25 years ago. I still like giving her massages, though they rarely last as long before we are on to better things.

I had a really close friend who used to date my cousin back when I was like 15 when we all hung out together in a tight-knit group of friends. We'll give him a code name of Z...lol. He ended up moving away and eventually joining the Army a few years down the road. Well, apparently, Z had harbored some kind of romantic/nostalgic feelings for me all those years and ended up telling one of his best friends in the military all about me. They would talk about all the good memories we'd had and whatever else I'm sure guys talk about...lol. Well, his friend thought - since Z was stuck in a loveless marriage at the time, and he'd been waxing poetic about some hometown girl so much - that he should grow some balls and end things with the aforementioned now ex-wife and confess his feelings for me. Z hesitated, but ended up deciding to stop back by my mother's house when he came back home for a visit and figured he would confess said feelings. However, I was 19-20 by that time, so I obviously didn't live there anymore. I get a call from my mom that Z randomly stopped in after several years and to get in touch with him.

So, I did. And, he confessed. It was awkward, because he was more like a brother to me and I was also in a relationship at the time. Not a happy one, but I don't stray on anyone for any reason. So, I was polite and jovial about it so I didn't hurt his feelings too much, but you could tell he started to pull away a little from reigniting a friendship at that point. So, his friend from the military steps in on his behalf to give him a good word and tell me that Z was in love with me, and that I should give it a chance. Doesn't help, because I obviously don't have romantic feelings for him. But, me and Z's friend become friends over the whole ordeal -- we actually end up being a lot closer than Z and I ever were, even back in the day.

But, it's all long distance friendship over the internet, because they were stationed in Colorado and I was bouncing back and forth between AZ and CA at the time. (That aforementioned bad relationship had me moving back home to CA over the course of that time.) So, jumping forward a few years because this is already long enough...I am officially broken up with my ex for the last time for many reasons and am back in California permanently. Z's friend had also ended his relationship around the same time, because she kept cheating on him. We commiserated with one another for having survived horrible relationships, and it was becoming clear that we would have been much happier all along with people like one another, since we had so much in common and had the same values for relationships. However, we remained just friends. Then, my best friend and I were planning a trip to a brewery out in Colorado, and I mentioned maybe stopping by to see him. My best friend must have known all along that she wanted us together, because she quickly dropped out of the plans and said that I should still go without her. Definitely a wink-wink there, but I was still clueless at the time...lol. He found out and agreed that I should still go and could stay with him instead of having to pay for a hotel. So, I thought -- "Awesome! It's good to have friends! Maybe I will."

And, then a few weeks later - before I decided if I was going to go or not, we were talking on the phone, and he started telling me about this girl he really liked but that they were friends and he was afraid to tell her and ruin things between them because they were really close. I was happy for him because he deserved someone who finally made him happy, and I urged him to bite the bullet and just tell her! So, he did...and, that "friend" was actually me. And, up until that point, I had never given romantic feelings a thought, because we were pretty much best friends and thought I just really cared for him -- but, it was like a light switched on when he told me, and my heart stopped. I didn't just care for him, I loved him. And, it clicked. I decided to go see him under the pretenses of still going as friends and then we'd see if there was chemistry, but no pressure if there wasn't. I didn't want to lose his friendship either. Well, that was almost 10 years ago, and we're married with kids now. The chemistry was undeniable then and still is to this day!

TL;DR: He was a friend-of-a-friend who tried to get me together with said friend, but he is a terrible wingman, and we ended up together instead!

Met my husband at a New Year's Eve party twenty years ago. The host was a friend of a friend of a friend. There was a tall, dark haired man who seemed to be the center of attention. I wondered why everyone was so interested in what he had to say. Over the course of the evening we struck up a conversation. Turned out he had just moved back to NYC after living in Texas for about five years. At midnight, when the ball dropped, he was by my side so we kissed. I told him I was having some friends over for brunch the following day and invited him to come. He didn't take me up on my invitation and never called. Ten months later, the same friend of a friend of a friend hosted a Halloween party. I immediately knew the guy in the Nixon mask was the fellow I'd met New Year's Eve. Again, we got to talking and at the end of the night he asked for my number. I asked "Are you gonna call me this time?" He did...and the rest is history.

Some time later I learned that when I initially met him on New Year's, he was actually living with a woman he'd brought back from Texas. They'd had a fight at dinner, which was why she wasn't at the party. They broke up a few months after.

The party host was best man at our wedding.

And my best friend also met her husband at one of his parties.

At work - we dated for four weeks and I asked her to get married. Married 5 months later and have been married for 38 years.

At a bar called The Hitching Post, no lie! I was in the military at a location I had been once before for some training and went out with the guys to do what we do.....not much:-) and this young pretty lady smacked my leg after telling some unremarkable joke. I told her to never hit me again. I really don't like it after years and years of being the recipient of a few bullies attention. Anyway with that attitude I didn't expect to get much attention, I was wrong. (Turns out she was intrigued by a guy NOT wanting her attention) So that night I decided to marry her. It took 6 weeks to propose, she was technically still married, otherwise I would have proposed sooner. We have been married ever since, 26 yrs now.

Met at school. She was dating my friend. He became quite the jerk and then became history. Later we began dating. Got married. Had kids. And now grandchildren. This Thursday it will be 43 years. Where has the time gone?
