How many of you take a multi-vitamin and if so, why – doctor or other professional recommended? Because you thought you needed it? If you do take one, do you think it helps?
I take a whole pile of vitamins and minerals because of a little genetic issue I have.
And yes, I do notice a difference if I skip them for a while.

Did 10 Minutes of a carb burner workout. I know I was planning originally to do a Tummy Toner, but when I put it in the DVR I realized that I'd just recently done it. You know how I like to change things up. So I decided to change to the carb burner DVD. I hadn't done that in a while. Then I held my plank for 2 min 50 sec. I'll take the extremepump class in a few.
I was able to lay out by the pool a bit yesterday, only I really didn't go in the water. In a way I like that because I get to listen to audiobooks.
After exercise I need to pick up Loki's med and then I think I'll stop at the Salvation Army. You never know what they'll have. Bowling this afternoon, then home to have dinner and then ceramics tonight then mahjongg. I'll take my firefly with me so that I can clear glaze the inside. I'm thinking that the body will be bands of purple and pink. Just not sure what color(s) the wings should be
Janet - don't be so hard on yourself. At least you didn't have as big a bowl of ice cream as Charlie had, so that's good for you! You deserve every penny of that awesomeness
dana - I like the way you didn't totally cut out beer but limited it. One question about the Silver Sneakers. what if you want to take another (more vigorous class or a water class because you have back problems), not their class. Can you take that other class instead of the Silver Sneakers class? Also, how old do you have to be in order to be eligible for it?
becca - you baked them at 380 -- for how long?
Heather - Good for you having more and more AF days! And than's for the explanation of the abbreviation. I'm sure I could have figured it out, It just would have taken me a while
Sarah - you were so very close to goal for April. So very very close. You'll do it in May, that's for sure. I do hope you lose the other 4 in May. But if you don't, I know you'll come awfully close.
machka - did you used to regularly take spinning classes?
drkatie - pop in and just let us know that you're even just skimming. We get concerned.
Karen in VA - what a lovely vase!
Lanette - I take a multivitamin just as added insurance that I'm getting the necessary vitamins/mineral.

machka - did you used to regularly take spinning classes?
On and off.
I've attended 10 week courses (once or twice a week for 10 weeks) during several winters in Canada. Then when we moved to Tasmania, I dropped in at a Tuesday class for quite a while at a gym where we had a membership. But we let that membership lapse about 2.5 years ago, and since then I've been looking for a spinning class that fit with my schedule. At last this one works!
I'll attend for the month of May and see how things go.

Michelle, at my gym Silver Sneakers just gets you in for free once you turn 65. You can take any class the regular gym membership covers. The gym gets reimbursed from your insurance if you check in at least 8 times per month. I'm not sure if it works that way everywhere, but it does at my gym. I do know that you can go to the silver sneakers website and search for your name to see if you are eligible. If you are, you can print yourself out a card.5

Mine gives about a 45% discount to everyone over 50, and a 53% discount to students. I'm over 50 now, but also a student.3 -
Lanette- I take a multi vitamin plus calcium, vitamin c, and biotin supplements. I have taken the multi, calcium and c, daily, for ten years. The biotin I added about three years ago. The only one I have "stopped" taking for a while was the biotin. I started taking them mainly to help my fingernails. I have what my mom always called eggshell nails; the nails are so thin IF I can get them long enough (past my finger tips) I can see through them. Usually they just tear, split, and crack before they get that far. I stopped taking the biotin, mainly to see if it was making a difference. I began the high protein diet the same time I began the biotin supplements, so I wasn't sure which was responsible for the stronger nails. It may be both, but my nails went down hill after two weeks of not taking the biotin; so I began taking it again.5

Heather: We will need to celebrate your fifth anniversary when it comes up. Mine will be in October. Today my allowed calories match my number of days on MFP. I don't expect that to ever happen again. :noway:
We're off to the eye doctor for DH so I'll have to come back later.

Good morning!
I got up early and put on my vivofit. It helps me remember what I'm doing! I made a yummy breakfast of French Toast, bananas, maple syrup.
2 slices Sara Lee 45/cal a slice wheat bread, 2 eggs, 2 Tblsp Half and Half, cinnamon, soak bread in egg mixture, cook in skillet using Pam spray. slice bananas and put on top the French Toast and drizzle with 2 Tblsp Maple syrup. 444 calories.
I have a lot to do today since it's the first of the month. Besides banking, I have to run to the doctor's office and pick a prescription for compression stockings. The medical supply store wouldn't sell compression stockings without one. My left leg from my knee to my toes are still really swollen from the blood clot I had in March. It's feeling better but by 2:00 pm I have to lie down and get it up on some pillows.
Michelle Yes, you have to be 65 and have a Medicare card. The "Y" bills Medicare after 8 visits. And yes, you can use all the facilities there.
lhscapil I take vitamins also; a multivitamin (for over 50), Krill Oil for Omega 3, and Calcium. My doctor suggested calcium. I notice a difference, especially if I miss my Krill Oil for a few days, my joints in my hands start hurting.
I love the flowers that are posted!
Happy May Day!
Glad maj dag!

Our Medigap supplemental insurance here in WA state includes "Silver & Fit" - similar to Silver Sneakers. We can go to the gym and use all of the equipment, attend all fitness classes included in the regular gym membership. I'm not aware there's a minimum number of times a person has to attend. Personal trainers and special classes cost extra.
Also I have a question on Turmeric - Curcumin. Some of you gals mentioned you take it. What strength and does it include the black pepper "piperine"? I'd like to give it a try but wondering if the pepper part will do a job on my tummy. Perhaps if taken with food it's OK?
Thanks in advance, ladies!

From what I understand from various medical programmes, a multi vitamin is largely a waste of money, with most of the vitamin just washed down the toilet. Some of us are deficient in D3, especially if you avoid the sun, like I do, (though I have never been deficient in a blood test) or live in very northern climes. I do take one as an insurance. I take the turmeric with pepper and it seems to be helping. I also take beetroot capsules and that has made a difference to my blood pressure. (It only works for some people) Calcium is not generally recommended, (isn't easily absorbed) but more dairy products are.
Basically, I thought I would try the ones with scientific backing. So far, so good. Though if money is short, a balanced diet is all you need.

well my April goal was a simple one and I blew it....I said I would leave some calories on the table........and I didn't, in fact I went and somehow found more and more and more calories and put them in my mouth!! SO I need to be a little more specific in May:
1. No junk food, salty, crunchy or sweet
2. No processed food, including pasta
3. Log honestly and move every day
4. Stay within the calories and don't eat the exercise calories
4. stay positive and stay focused on what matters
I walked into the faculty room today and a large table was filled (I mean filled) with every form of junk food you could imagine....It was supposed to be a part of "Teacher Appreciation Day" but it was so very very unhealthy I didn't feel appreciated at all, I kind of felt ambushed.....I walked out of that room so fast to type up my goals to you all. Glad that you are all here to make me feel supported and accountable.

Happy May Day, ladies -
Barbie - thank you for keeping us going
Missed my TOPS meeting today (not at all like me) I just had to sleep in. I have not been getting very good sleep since things kind of unraveled with hubby last Monday. Kind of disappointed because I know I would have shown a loss.
Becca - we did May baskets, too. We would put lilacs, gum, candy, and little notes in ours. When we delivered them we would put them on the porch, ring the doorbell, and hide to watch the neighbors get the basket surprise.
Katiebug - I missed you, too.
Well, getting ready for study group now. I will check in later.
Goals for May
Log honestly, even on "bad" days
Water aerobics 3 times a week
Continue sorting/purging/organizing
Lose 6 pounds

NY KAREN - That is terrible! Is it not possible to say something, or get together with a few like minded souls and make a representation. Why do they want to kill you? :noway:
I can't believe the hoops you US folks have to jump through, just to go to work. Junk food should be banned from the workplace as they ban it for kids in schools.
Today my DH remembered it is our 14th "meeting anniversary" on Saturday. It's hard to believe we have been together that long. It still feels like a new and fresh relationship. How lucky I was to meet him at the age of 53.
He suggested he buy me something nice to wear on our cruise in August. So we are going to Winchester by train. Unfortunately there are works on the line on Saturday  , so we are going on Friday. I have booked a nice French lunch at our favourite window table, then we will saunter round the shops. I have got him a book about cricket. Will also get him some chocolates.
So that is posh lunches two days running! Out on Thursday with my Portsmouth friend. Will have to use all my whiles to not eat too much.
Tonight's lamb curry was fabulous. Used chard from the garden and frozen peas. Yum! With raita it came in at 375 calories. No rice for me.
Katla - My 5th MFP anniversary is in August. I did the first few months on my own as I already had a very good knowledge of CICO. Then I discovered you lot!

All of u were right :0) I remember taking my glasses off, they were thick. Needless to say I am blind there4

I don't take a multi-vitamin, just 5,000 mg of D3 plus a little extra calcium even though I eat a dairy rich diet. What I eat every day is very nutrition dense and my energy level is generally high, so I guess it's working.
While walking this morning I listened to a podcast called "the minimalist" and came home and decluttered several spots in my house.

Happy Mother Goose Day!
Philip and I had a good time at the Greyt Gatsby fundraiser, which was on our anniversary, and it was a big night for our foster boy Waco. He met his new forever mom at the event. We packed his little suitcase and he went home with her, so we've got an open spot again. The first thing Luna did the next morning was run and look at Waco's crate, but I think she's enjoying being an only dog again now.
Today is the first day we're cooking for Matt (our friend who's having brain surgery), so I made two casseroles last night so we'd have one for us and one to deliver. Everyone he's talked to about the electrode implants has told him they were sorry they didn't do it sooner, so he's feeling pretty good about the impending surgery. Philip and another friend shaved their heads and surprised Matt at his own head-shaving appointment. Philip wears his hair very short, so I was surprised at how different he looked with it completely gone!
I have been getting in my own way lately, and as a result I'm losing and gaining the same five pounds over and over. Cooking for Matt will help, though, because it will force me to plan and cook meals. May's a tough month, what with the anniversary of my mom's passing falling right between Philip's birthday (today) and mine (the 10th). The Mother's Day commercials still get me down.
Welcome to all the newcomers! I'm wishing you all a lovely day

Lanette: Our Medicare supplemental insurance pays for gym memberships and I suspect they pay a lot less out in doctor's bills because of it. We take Spring Valley whole herb Turmeric/Curcurmin 500 mg daily. It has been beneficial for digestion and also thinking ability. We get it at Walmart. :flowerforyou:
Karen & Heather: Speaking as a retired teacher, I think that teacher appreciation generally turns out to be sweets, fat, & Starbucks. Sad for health, but people who are chronically exhausted snarf up caffeine and sugar as fast as they can. Most teachers seem to fit the chronically exhausted description. I know I did. :ohwell:
We had a busy morning, starting with an eye appointment for DH. We also went looking for hardware to use on new doors to the storage area under the stairs, but didn't find anything we both liked. After we got home we took recyclables to the recycle station and cans & bottles to the food bank. Oregon has had a bottle bill for years that pays out a nickle for each beverage can & bottle that is returned. (The consumer pays this at purchase time and gets the money back when the bottles are recycled.) We could take the cans and bottles back to the store for the money but prefer to donate them to the food bank so they can use the money to help feed people.
Unfortunately I had to miss yoga today. :ohwell:

Karla you said it!! Being Exhausted and stressed leads to poor choices. Wouldn't it be lovely to have had a table full of roasted veggies or salad or fruit.
Or how about a simple thank you card??

Hi - I'm new here, and I live smack dab in the middle of Missouri. I'm adjusting to being a single woman since I lost my hubby in February, and I feel I'm ready to re-tackle health and weight. My goals for May are:
1. Keep snack foods, desert foods and processed foods out of the house. All of these trigger my binge reflex. Now that I live alone, I don't have to keep food in the house that I know I should stay away from. I spent most March and April slowly eating my way through the stocks of food in the pantry and freezer, so now when I shop I can buy only what I really need and plan to eat!
2. Plan a food theme of the week. Last week it was steak, cause I threw one on the grill early in the week and had enough left over for at least three more applications. I also chose cauliflower and yellow squash since I put a bunch of each on my grill along with the steak, so had plenty of leftovers that were delicious and nutritious!! The week before I crockpotted two large chicken breasts and had plenty of pulled chicken for a variety of meals: Mexican soft tacos, a casserole with whole grain noodles, a stovetop casserole with quinoa, added chicken to salad, etc. I also make and freeze individual meals if I start getting tired of my meat of the week, and need a change.
3. Drink plenty of water and herbal teas. Cause that's just good for you, and helps keep me feeling full.
4. Never eat more than half of any meal I order at a restaurant (I work, so sometimes there are lunches out). The other half makes another lunch or a dinner.
5. Buy a new scale, cause the one I have seems to have a 6 lb range which is just way to inconsistent to help me know if my efforts are being rewarded on the scale or not. My clothes are a good guage too, probably better than the scale, but I'm the type that needs to see the numbers move too.6 -

Michele in nc I always pick a weird temp, because I can. I suppose 375' is fine. I was baking thick slices of potatoes for my husbands homemade French fries as well. I checked every 5 minutes, turning them over each time. I turned them about 3 times, or so. It was my first time making them so it looks like they can dry out and burn easily. The edges were brown, but the inside still was creamy. Exactly like I like'em! They were kind of chewy. Yummy!
Becca1 -
Karen and Heather. That table of crap would've made me nervous too! There used to be a BBC program where they start the program showing the bad eating habits of the people, using a visual of a weeks worth of bad food. Its actually a great visual! The participant then changes their choices and they turn their tables to a beautiful sight of healthy items. I sometimes think at the end of the day, piling on a table all my choices, and think, is that a happy day?
