WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR MAY 2017

I'm getting a friend from up the road to pick me up this morning for yoga as I can't drive just yet with my arm. DH was a bit put out when I asked him as it would severely interrupt his exefcise/shower routine. Luckily I had her number.
I don't suppose I will be able to do a lot, but, as I missed last week when I was in France, I will go for the company and do what I can. No downward dog!
AF day today. Having salmon and spinach tonight.
I'm hoping the hairdresser will ring me back about squeezing me in for a wet cut. She's on holiday next week. Really like her.
DH has got to go out sometime to buy himself some cold food for tomorrow night's dinner. He's going to a One Day cricket match which starts at 2 pm. Quiche?

Morning, all,
Kim - enjoy Rori! She's the reason I have the job that I began yesterday.
I didn't want to say anything until I began for a lot of reasons, including a little superstition about counting chickens before they hatch. But last August or September, when Corey and I went up to Fort Davis and met Rori, we had an amazing discussion about what it would mean to be working for something bigger, something better and more fulfilling, than simply putting money in a business owner's pocket.
Some of you may know that Rori has a very interesting position working for the Girl Scouts of the USA. You've heard her talk about some of what she does--she travels to all the councils to help them learn to develop funding that goes beyond Girl Scout cookie sales, among other things.
Well, I sent my resume on to her afterward, which she told me she would share with the regional council's CEO, and did. When the position came open for their Regional Fund Development Manager earlier this year, they called me, interviewed me, and eventually hired me. Rori opened that door for me, and I am forever grateful.
So, as of yesterday morning, I am working for the Girl Scouts of the Desert Southwest. I am one of two people responsible for developing relationships with donors, administering grants and writing new grant applications, among other hats. This council stretches completely across southern New Mexico, and 23 counties of West Texas. Today I get my laptop, get to finally meet the CEO that I interviewed with over Skype, and get to find out more about what my responsibilities actually will be over the months and years to come. She, her HR director and my counterpart are driving all the way out from El Paso this morning. About three-and-a-half hours each way, and they're barely driving halfway across the region included.
I love beginnings--and love the idea of using my powers for good. Not that I've been using them for evil or anything, but it will be nice to be part of something truly worthwhile.
Now, for a second cup of coffee.
Love y'all,
Lisa in West Texas (still hacking, but the coffee's helping)10 -
good morning all! and I am just going to jump in with Lisa- How ABSOLUTELY fantastic! Of course you have the skill and drive; but to know that Rori (one of our women) played a part in passing your resume into the right hands....it is just to great for words! Wishing you the best of luck with beginning this new position. As a former Girl Scout leader, I have nothing but respect for all of those men/women who keep this organization vital and running! What an amazing group of women I have found! Honored to be a part of this group!6

Nice one Lisa and Rori. :drinker:
My yoga session was often uncomfortable, but I managed.
The hairdresser hasn't got back to me, so I am going food shopping with DH to get some steps in.
The viewers liked the house, but thought the garden was not big enough for them. Hey Ho.

Hello ladies! Not even sure I checked in with the group in April because the month was crazy. I finished my Master's thesis, which was approved thank you very much! I am a teacher and have to finish up the school year early so we can fly back to the US and watch both our son and daughter graduate college!!! Also we've been renovating a house, which we're kind of done with for the time being.
I started this chapter with MFP in December and have lost 15 lbs so far!! Yay me!! I am averaging a pound about every ten days, which is fine with me. I'd rather lose slowly and KEEP it off, preferably till I die, than bounce back.
A couple of years ago I was all like "I can't lose weight" but obviously I CAN. And the more I exercise, the less chronic pain I have in my life, too-- that is a huge win for me. I still have bad days, sometimes a bunch of them in a row, but in general I feel amazing compared to a couple of years ago. I'm actually starting to look forward to the next 20 years instead of "Please God, kill me now."9 -
Good morning!

Kate UK: I love the goat.
Penny: I've heard of self-flagellating. I don't think it is particularly helpful and I recommend that you skip the whip. This whole process works because we are deliberately good to ourselves and purposely make healthy choices. That said, I have work to do, too.
Lisa: Congratulations on your new job! I hope it turns out to be both interesting and fulfilling. :flowerforyou:
Rori: You are an absolutely amazing woman! I'm proud to know you.
MeredithDeV: Congratulations on your success! WTG!!!
I am feeling sorry for myself because I have to miss all my yoga classes this week due to eye doctor appointments. DH had one yesterday, I have one tomorrow, and he has another on Friday. :grumble: Feeling sorry for myself has never lead to a good outcome that I can remember, so I need to create a better attitude. This is not an easy task but it is necessary. :ohwell:

Lisa - how wonderful that the Girl Scouts picked you. Rori sure knew what she was doing when she recommended you. I'm so happy things worked out so well for you.
Meredith DeVo - you're in a great state of mind right now. So proud of you

Mayday! Mayday!
Thank you Barbie for getting us set up.
I had pretty hefty goals for April, and other than walking average of 8,000 steps per day, failed in many of them.
So, to be more realistic:- Walk an average of 8,000 steps per day. Hopefully more!
- Keep logging!
- Eat my calories each day – I think part of my downfall was going too low, getting hungry after supper then going way overboard. Haven’t been eating my exercise calories but might be a good idea if I’ve had a lot of exercise.
- Keep more healthy snacks around: avocado, cheese, apples…. Things I’m not so tempted to overdo.
- Keep the sugar intake low.
How many of you take a multi-vitamin and if so, why – doctor or other professional recommended? Because you thought you needed it? If you do take one, do you think it helps?
I got a free sample of Irwin’s gel multi vitamins for women at the health food store, it’s packed with all kinds of good things. Supposed to take three per day. Well, since I eat a pretty good diet with lots of fruits, veggies, beans and all kinds of nuts, I think I get a lot of the trace vitamins despite the fact that many soils are depleted.
Anyhow, I liked the vitamin just fine. I know Weight Watchers recommends taking one.
So the plan is.... I’ll take one with supper in addition to my 5000 of D3. I’ve started to take kelp also for the iodine since I don’t eat a lot of ocean seafood and I’ve switched to Himalayan pink salt instead of Morton’s iodized.
Scotch eggs…has anyone ever made them? I saw a recipe in “That Sugar Book” and they look good – basically peeled hardboiled eggs coated with ground sausage and baked. I was wondering what the best type of sausage would be – pork sausage at the store is generally coarse ground plus I don’t like the flavor of a lot of pork. Chicken might be good though.
Everyone have a wonderful week!!

Lanette, my grandfather used to make the BEST pork sausage...he would grind the pork and add the sage and other spices and it was delicious! I wonder if you looked up some sausage recipes you could make your own chicken or other sausage exactly to your liking...of course you could start with already ground meat so it would be relatively simple...

Hi Everyone, my name is Anya, and I'm new to your group. I am so happy to see that there is a place for us 50+ ladies. My goal for May is to take better care of myself. I'm very good at taking care of others, but when it comes to me, forget it. There just doesn't seem to be time. It's to the point that I get so run down, that I can't do anything but work and collapse. I catch every virus in town. Then my workouts, dieting, and healthy behaviors go out the window. I'm putting weight back on This month, I'm going to try to listen to my body, rest, back off working so hard, stop giving so much, whatever, so I don't end up depleted like I am now. I think this is a common experience for many women. I'm looking forward to working on this change. I'm also looking forward to learning more about the women in this group. Oh yes, and logging every day

klanders30 wrote: »well my April goal was a simple one and I blew it....I said I would leave some calories on the table........and I didn't, in fact I went and somehow found more and more and more calories and put them in my mouth!! SO I need to be a little more specific in May:
1. No junk food, salty, crunchy or sweet
2. No processed food, including pasta
3. Log honestly and move every day
4. Stay within the calories and don't eat the exercise calories
4. stay positive and stay focused on what matters
I walked into the faculty room today and a large table was filled (I mean filled) with every form of junk food you could imagine....It was supposed to be a part of "Teacher Appreciation Day" but it was so very very unhealthy I didn't feel appreciated at all, I kind of felt ambushed.....I walked out of that room so fast to type up my goals to you all. Glad that you are all here to make me feel supported and accountable.
NYKAREN
NYKAREN I think I have mentioned to this group that tempting goodies often appear in our break room at work, and you never know when you are going to unexpectedly walk into a food trap. I deal with it by pretending that the food is all contaminated with E. coli or Salmonella. Once that thought is in my head, the food no longer calls to me. I know that is a weird way to deal with it.
Karen in Virginia6 -
Yvonne I miss my mother too. It's been 16 years and I miss her every day...1

KarenVA I never heard the E. coli thought process before! Great way to think about it.2
-
Karen I do remember you mentioning that trick and it did cross my mind. And here I am today, not going into that staff room again, and don't miss it. Had my delightful salad with roasted brussel sprouts on top and I am stuffed. I am getting serious this month of May!4

Welcome Anya! One of the most important lessons we have to learn is how to create healthy boundaries. I am in the process of developing some with a group of friends. It is a process, to be sure, but essential for our mental and physical health. You will get lots of support here.
I did have an alcoholic drink tonight as I've been very uncomfortable all day with my arm. But I'm sticking with the one, which is an NSV for me. So writing up 2 units for tonight. (50 mls Pastis) I want to achieve no more than 14 units per week, which is the government recommended maximum. It is really helping to have my chart. No cheating!

Good afternoon!
Lisa Congratulatons on your new job! We have a lot in common; I was the production editor for the Free Press in Kyle, TX, for 5 years. I loved that job; I looked forward to do layout and design and it was such a rush to get ready for press time!! My DH husband coaxed me to find a state job because the paper didn't have benefits. It was good but I left all my friends behind.
I worked for TxDOT and then Texas Parks and Wildlife at the HQs in Austin. They both have their missions to serve the public. TPWD was probably the best job ever! Parties and sporting events outside; it was so much fun I hated to retire.
Now we live in Arkansas!
Karen food at work: There was actually a lot of healthy food to pick from but I stayed away from anything you had to serve up with your hands, like chips, cookies.
I'm sitting on the deck and I hear a bird I never heard before. It sounds like a large bird. It sounds like those raptors in the movie Jurassic Park!!
We just finished picking up branches from the storm and the logs Dolly carries off to chew on! That's why the deck looks like a mess all the time. A pile of mulch when she gets done! I pulled some weeds too, so I guess I'll have gardening listed today as exercise!
Dolly and Lake Hamilton muddy from the storm. I was surprised how much debris were around the shoreline and boat docks!

Well, if you hit it twice, the second cancels out the first. Don't ask me how I know.
Luckily, the third hit brings it back. LOL.
Congrats to Lisa and thanks to Rori.2 -
Hello ladies!
My plans for the day have been turned upside down. We are supposed to be on the road driving to Nashville today (a 12 hour drive or 2 day trip) to pick up our son from college. Instead, we are sitting in a service garage waiting for diagnostics on our truck that only made it 20 miles down the road this morning. So, I've been cancelling reservations and looking into rental vehicles if needed. Not to mention, our son's vehicle in Nashville may need towed back to Buffalo so the rental needs to be able to tow as well! Son's vehicle is in a service garage with an estimated 1300.00 in repairs so far ... Oh it's raining here alright!
Lisa and Rori ...wonderful!

Hello again! Thought I would give you all a little giggle. For those of you that don't know; I have a home daycare. Today is the second rainy day in a row so the kids are a bit on the surly side. I was actually threatened at lunchtime by a four year old. He walked into the kitchen where I was preparing lunch and says: "I don't want this lunch. I want peanut butter and jelly. If you don't give me peanut butter and jelly, I am going to have a really bad day and sit on the couch and cry and never ever get up!" My internal voice said "Promise!?" But I just sighed (because kids don't understand sarcasm), looked at him and said "That is your choice, little man." He moaned, and looked at me, and walked away, like it was the end of the world. Two minutes later he was spinning in a circle in the living room with Pooh's Honey Pot (stuffed toy) on his head. Needless to say, he came to the table and ate his carrot sticks and drank his milk, leaving the ham and cheese sandwich and the clementine. He did make one last ditch effort for that pb and j before leaving the table, though.6

Karen in VA ... I've used a similar "weird trick" in the past as well ... I work as a housekeeper at our church and I'm here to tell you that the paper towels NEVER need replaced in the men's room ... so what does that tell ya? I don't eat at the potlucks that's for sure....4

Sometimes I feel a bit like Dirty Harry- "Go ahead, make my day!" It becomes a showdown between me and the kids. (Doesn't Dirty Harry always win?)4
