Rori - August might work as well. Just let us know! We are planning to go to Chicago on the 19th and then into Wisconsin on the 23rd so if you're around those areas let me know! I'm sorry you're not feeling very well! Great job on the weight loss! You do really well with being on the road as often as you are.

I weighed in with my PJ shorties on with NO slippers or shoes and I lost 1.8 lbs. since last week. Woohoo!
I didn’t do much today other than go grocery shopping. When I got back home I had a phone call to remind me of my Mammo-squeeze and Bone-density tests. It’s a good thing, because I didn’t remember at all. I had it in my phone but I guess I didn’t set the reminder correctly. I have to write myself up for that digression!
Lenora: I designed the ring with the help of a jeweler, Sarah, in Meridian, Idaho. I know that sounds strange since I live in Arkansas but my best friend used to work for Sarah when they both lived in Boise. Sarah and I conversed on the phone and text messaged with pictures and diagrams from her CAD program. Then she makes the wax casting from the computer generated design. I wish I could make jewelry like that! I make simple bead bracelets! She does fantastic work and has clients all over the US and the UK.
All: There might have been some mistake about “Mother’s” ring. In the US a Mother’s ring has stones in it that represents the children’s birth month. That is why I have amethyst and aquamarine around my diamond. I have 3 children, Feb., March and Dec.
Becca: I love the pictures of the kitchens! My kind of places! And the old rotary phone brings back memories for sure. 4-party lines and waiting until they were free to dial out. Wow! Now we all have our own phones. I have to shave my legs and pits! Even though I have fine blonde hair, I couldn’t stand the feel of it. I would be self-conscious I guess! -- You looked way too young to get married!
Machka: I love how you and your DH met and were married! That must have been scary to move to the opposite end of the earth! I met my husband in Austin, Texas, and we were 35 miles apart. I had moved from Grand Junction, Colorado, after my divorce and was staying with my mother until I found work and moved to Austin. Initially we met online but Bob asked me to marry him only 3 months after we met in person December 2003. I still had to fly back to Colorado for the final divorce in court. But once I left, I was a free woman! We were married in July 2004. We chose a funky Mexican restaurant that we were always at to be married in. They had a party room in the back and had 35 friends and family come. We had a good time with a band and sit down Mexican dinner all for about $1000. Menopause: I never was nauseous. I lived in the Palm Springs, Calif., area and it was hot anyway. The summers were unbearable!
Joyce: It sounds like you had a magical romance, and there’s a lot to be said about being married 45 years. Congratulations!
Heather: Sorry you lost your cleaning help. Maybe after the shock of losing her dad she’ll give you a call, or you could call her to see how she’s doing. You said your cleaning help was married? Is her husband moving in with her mother too? Maybe she’ll come back. I hope your party is a success! DON’T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF!!
Beth: Your college boy sounds like my kids. One time when I was a single mother, my oldest daughter pulled out a porterhouse steak and was cooking it up for a snack after high school! I had to sit her down and explain that was for the family dinners, not snacks!! With three kids at home in junior and high school I spent a lot of time cooking economical dinners. She’s had an eating problem early on… She’s going to have a gastric bypass in October. Maybe I was the problem?
I here thunder coming off from west. We are supposed to have another storm tomorrow. Maybe it’s coming early?
Have a good evening y’all,
Dana in Arkansas
My mom, she's 88 but she won't talk to me. She use to live with us...

Call me crazy but I love to see other people happy and succeeding .
Good Evening My Dear Friends,
Dana, what a cute picture of Dolly. Great teeth, btw.
MicheleNC, great that you found someone to paint the names on the tray. I’ve never made stuffed cabbage but I like the whole leaf so can’t see cutting out the rib.
Beth, good for you on not gaining while eating on the road.
Dana, I can’t imagine having bodies like those two girls at any age. Wow is all I can say.
Yvonne, thanks. My DD’s great dane mix is such a beautiful boy. I’ll get a picture sometime soon. He’s not as tall as I expected. He has been an inside dog with her, sleeping in her bed, etc, and here he has to stay outside with Maggie, our Black Lab mix. It is being an adjustment, to say the least. He is such a sweet boy, too.
Joyce, I hope you get to go somewhere more exciting than Bob Evans for Mother’s Day. You deserve it.
Katla, my DH prefers iceberg and I prefer Romaine also. I think it’s so cool that you can see the river from your house.
Heather, sorry to hear about your housecleaner. Is there not a service you can call for this time with company coming? (later) Glad to see you found someone and I hope this showing is “The One”.
MicheleNC, I must be weird. I like the ribs on cabbage and also on Romaine lettuce. What can I say? LOL
Lanette, that is interesting how you met your DH. I love hearing about all the different things that go on in everyone’s lives.
Dana, any time you have a question you don’t need to ask Google…..just ask us here. We love to give answers. But its good to know that NSV is known by Google. Your new/old ring is beautiful.
Sharon, Happy Birthday. I hope it was a good one.
Lisa, glad you got to observe your boss. It always makes it easier to see someone else do it first as far as I’m concerned.
With my DD here I have fallen behind again. I’m just enjoying spending a lot of time with her. I do think of all of you and will confess that my eating has not been as good with her here. That will change soon.

Dana- sorry to hear that your mom will not talk to you. That is not abnormal at that age or stage in life. Mine was like that for two years and now she talks to me. She has no idea why she wasn't talking to me before and I don't care. I know it is because of some dementia.

Katla, I don't have any advice about buying a recumbent exercise bike except what someone else already told you....get an expensive, high quality one. The one I have was inexpensive and a part broke almost immediately. The company sent a new part and that made it work for awhile, then something else went wrong. Now I can ride it at a single resistance but not change any of the settings and the computer that showed speed, distance, resistance, calories burned, etc. doesn't work at all.
I had a cleaner who worked for me at one time and I loved coming home to a clean house. Now that we have dogs, the logistics of having someone come and clean seems overwhelming. Besides, we don't have the money for it, so I haven't pursued the idea. One of my favorite stories about my mother is that when my sister graduated from high school, my mother went back to work so she could earn enough money to hire a house cleaner and also buy nice clothes to wear to work.
Jake has been getting more and more upset since the election. He seeks out things to read about all the things the President is doing that upset him. He is so prone to stress and it seems that he is seeking things to stress him out even more. Because of his many health problems, he is especially troubled about what might happen to his health insurance and that puts even more stress on his already damaged heart. He rebuffs anything I say to try to help him relax. And then, all stressed out about national events, he snaps at me for no reason.
Stats for today:

170 minutes walking Sasha and Bess

Barbie. I too am sorry to hear about the stressful situations with your Jake. What if you get a clown red nose you could wear when you sense tension? He needs to look on the lighter things in life, and see the GOOD. Its out there, but it hides sometimes. Sometimes my husband and I get out the crayons and color.
Jake needs to realize there are certain groups of people that try to bring chaos into our world. Because we live not far from Portland, we see all the demonstrations there, but to me they all look like kids in dark clothing rioting and busting up stuff. I choose to not identify with most I see on the news, because I just can't relate to it. That doesn't mean I don't care, I just choose to not let it affect me.
I am sorry he points his frustration towards you. If it were me I would have a box ready with horns, funny wax lips, candy necklaces, a rubber chicken...OK you see where I am going with this.... Make light of his stressful situations. That is just me, but putting on a Groucho Marx glasses with moustache while he talks serious, would be hilarious, and probably, just maybe make him smile.
Hugs
Becca

Sharon and Eyvonne - hope you had a great birthday!
Becca- you seem like such a free spirit! I could maybe let the hair on my legs grow, but under the arms would be tough for me. We had a rotary phone for a long time. I remember one of my son's friends trying to push the numbers inside the rotary dial and saying the phone didn't work. I had to show him how to dial.
Heather -I could not survive without someone to help me clean my house. I pay my niece to come once a week.
I really loved all the stories of how you ladies met your husbands!
When I was in school I had a crush on Pete's (my now husband's) friend. So I tried to hang out with Pete in order to try a get to know his friend better. I once even told Pete that all we could ever be was friends, (I could tell he was attracted to me and I told him I liked him too much to hurt him.) I never did date his friend, but over time Pete and I became best friends. We were platonic friends for two years- my choice not his. He was a year ahead of me in school though, and I started to realize he was going to graduate and leave the city. That is when I finally realized how much I cared about him. I was really upset that I had been so dumb and had not given a romantic relationship with Pete a chance. We started dating right before he graduated and I remember feeling like I was living on a cloud. I was so happy and in love. He would drive back to UW Madison every weekend to see me. He is still the most wonderful man and I thank God every day that I came to my senses way back then. I feel very lucky and blessed.
I weigh in tomorrow. I am nervous because I ate too much yesterday. Sometimes because I have 49 pounds to lose in one year it seems overwhelming. I really need to stick to this. Hope I am strong and make this happen

"We" were talking about how y'all met your husbands. I met DH on Yahoo!'s dating site too. I think I really impressed him, my saying "I could merge into heavy traffic!"
Dana - I love that! The thing that impressed my husband was that I not only watched the "Twilight Zone", but that I could name my favorite episodes, LOL! My all time fav is "Two", with Elizabeth Montgomery & Charles Bronson.
-I really like your mother's ring, btw. I worked in (very) fine jewelry for 20 years, so I can tell you that it's a unique and lovely piece! (Many mother's rings just don't work out that well, so congrats!)
Yoga class went well. It was at a yoga studio, a very nice, serene space, and was specially for plus-size women. I kept up pretty well, though at the end I had a headache. I'm not sure if it was from all the concentration, or maybe that I needed dinner. Or both. But I'm glad I went, and I will go again. I wasn't overly sore today, just a bit in the shoulders. So a definite victory!
Have a good night, everyone!

danareel6615 wrote: »Machka: I love how you and your DH met and were married! That must have been scary to move to the opposite end of the earth!
It wasn't too bad. I had already spent 3 months travelling around Australia in 2004, and then went over again into the area where I moved in 2008. So I was somewhat familiar with Australia and during the 2008 trip, I met a few people in the area.
Plus Australia isn't really much different from Canada.
What was challenging was this ...
I visited Victoria, Australia in February 2008.
We married in August 2008.
I returned to university for my last semester, and he moved back to Australia. We had 10 days together after we were married ... so that was a bit tough.
And then ... February 2009 ...
I started my final practical for my Bachelor of Education, teaching Grade 1 students.
At the same time, a massive and extremely destructive bushfire went through a large portion of Victoria, including the area where my husband lived. The house he set up and furnished for us was destroyed, as well as 1000+ other homes, and about 170 people died. Two entire towns were wiped out. It was devastating.
My husband moved into a caravan on the property where he worked, with the few items he managed to save. Fortunately, most of that property survived the fire so he was able to continue to work.
June 2009 ... middle of winter in Australia ...
He moved into a very rustic shed at the back of the property ... I graduated and moved to Australia. Into this very rustic shed at the back of the property.
It was one room.
Heated by a large fireplace at one end that was improperly built so it didn't work very well.
Our water came from the rain, but because we had 2 tanks we were actually able to have a flush toilet in an outhouse and we had cold running water into the shed.
We did have a solar hot water heater, but it only seemed to wake up and heat water about once a week. We hauled an heavy old tub into the shed from the paddock, scrubbed it down, and would have baths about once a week when the hot water heater felt like giving us hot water.
There was no electricity ... we were 2 km from "the grid". So we got power from a generator at first, and then he set up solar panels later.
At first the place was just a shell, but we insulated it and lined it with old fence palings so it was reasonably comfortable. However, the floor was always cold and damp because it was just sidewalk pavers on sand.
I learned to bake using a cast iron dutch oven over an open fire in the fireplace!
We lived there for a full year before we were able to find another place. I have photos if anyone is interested.
Plus on the flight over to Australia, I felt my left calf cramp but I figured I'd walk it off. 6 weeks later, I was still figuring I'd walk it off until one night I was sitting in the bath (rare luxury!) and noticed that my left leg was twice the size of the right. I had also been struggling with breathing.
The next day I walked out to meet my husband on his way home from work as I always did ... and couldn't make it. I couldn't get that left leg to work and I couldn't breathe.
The next day he suddenly burst through the door in the middle of the day and whisked me off to the Dr ... then into an ultrasound ... then into the hospital for 2 weeks with DVT. Turns out I have a genetic predisposition toward DVT.
So ... moving to Australia was fine. My welcome to Australia was ... challenging!!9 -
Lauren in LA: Welcome! :flowerforyou:
Cheri in College Station TX: Congratulations on your weight loss. WTG!!!!!
Lanette: I take Turmeric/Curcumin every morning with good results. :flowerforyou:
Mary: I keep you and all medical researchers working on Lyme's Disease in my prayers.
Cheri: I love your photos with your DH. The two of you are a cute couple.
Barbie: Thanks for your comments on exercise bikes. I tend to look for cheap and that is usually not the best way to make a good choice. I'm not any happier with the President than Jake. Let him know he isn't alone in his concerns. :noway:
I bought two new fuchsias today and they are hanging in their new spots. One is at the corner of our deck and the other is just outside of the kitchen window. They make me and the hummingbirds happy. I still have feeders out for the hummingbirds, too.

from what I hear about this insurance debockle.. I will be scre-ed . when everything goes the way its gonna go the people in there 50-60's will be paying huge huge premiums.. which I will not be able to afford.. and with a pre-existing condition no help.. so I will probably be paying a fine and living with no insurance.. but right now I cant worry about that. have to put it in Gods hands..today is my day off, but have errands to run and to get Taliah on the bus.. so will try and catch up later..3 -
Morning, all,
Rori - Thank you for that! One of my main aims in getting this job was to find a place where I can feed my need to keep learning all my life. One of the drivers for leaving the newspaper was because I was coming up to the year mark and exactly the same things were happening that happened the year before, and the year before that and the year before that. I need challenges, and said as much in the interview with the CEO. She laughed and said that she was pretty sure that wouldn't be a problem. I hope you get to feeling better! I dealt with similar issues ever since about April 20th--and I'm sure of the date, because I started feeling awful the first day after my job ended, and am just now starting to feel better three weeks later. Never a fever, just a really bad cold, or that's what it seemed like.
Machka - You are a tougher woman than I am... Glad you got the DVT issues resolved, and so glad your new husband got you to the hospital in time. Very scary stuff. Loved your wedding pics, as well... Australia is one of the few countries I would still love to visit--I was based in Europe while still married to the US Air Force, so satisfied most of my need to travel. Australia has always intrigued me, though.
Allie - I can tell you from our own experience this last tax year that the "fines" in the tax system for not having AHA-level health insurance are not very high. They're based on income, and if your income isn't high, you may not pay a fine at all. And there are insurances out there that can at least provide catastrophic care, even if they're not terribly good for day-to-day care. They don't satisfy the terms of the AHA, but they do exist. And with the current unrest at higher levels of government, I wouldn't count on anything happening for a while. The fact they got that bill through the House does not mean it will pass the Senate. Try not to add to your stress by worrying about that one--you've got enough stress to contend with.
Barbie - I'm so sorry that Jake is taking all this so hard. I feel sometimes our country has simply fractured and split across these dividing lines, and unfortunately, I don't see an end in sight that won't fracture us even further into warring camps with no middle ground. I sincerely hope not.
Yvonne - Happy birthday!
My Corey love story - short version. I left my now-ex-husband in Illinois almost exactly nine years ago and drove down to my sister's in West Texas. She drove a 40-ton dump truck for an oilfield services company there, and I started working for the same company, as a consultant, within a week of arriving. My first day on the job, early morning, I was standing next to one of the ladies I was going to be working with. We were atop a metal stairway landing, basically a balcony, above the massive mechanic shop, looking down on the top of diesel water haulers below. I said something to the effect that balconies always made me feel like a princess, and showed her the "beauty queen" wave I'd learned as the National Honor Society duchess in high school. Elbow, elbow, wrist, wrist... Heard a voice below saying, "Well, hello, princess!" Gorgeous voice, gorgeous man, looking up at me and smiling when I looked over the railing. He brought me doughnut holes the next day. After a lot of uproar in both our lives, six months later we started dating, and a year and a month after that first meeting, in June of 2009, we were married. He brought a 15-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl to the union, both of whom now call me "Mom," and their babies call me "Gramily." Oh--and he called me "Princess" for years, as his ex-wife and I are both named Lisa. Now, I'm pretty much just "Honey."
Off to work, my chickens. I'll be in Odessa Monday and Tuesday all day long, and will probably get a hotel room so I don't have to drive back and forth in between. Need to go through my predecessor's files, and there are six filing cabinets full to scan, shred, archive or simply pitch. An education all on its own, I'm thinking. Then Carlsbad on Wednesday for a group meeting which I'm prepping for today.
Love y'all,
Lisa in West Texas7 -
Good morning!
Machka I would love to see your shed you lived in. Sounds like an adventure! I love our rustic decor but never had to live in a rustic environment.
Barbie We have Humana Advantage insurance and have a zero copay. But I don't believe that the Cadillac tax that Obama had written in will be removed by Trump. So we may have to pay an extra tax on our Federal taxes. However taxes over all will be reduced. I think there are people that try to stir up trouble by rioting and destroying property to get noticed in the national news. That's their agenda and the media doesn't help. They are on Trumps back 24/7!
We had 8 years of executive orders on Friday afternoons that we don't even know how many there were! They were on Friday for a purpose. The media never covered those that took our liberties. Don't get me started!! I really don't want to talk politics on this group.
I have my Mammogram and bone density tests this morning and we have a storm rolling in. Weatherman says severe risk for bad weather. Wind and hail but low risk for tornadoes.
Have a good day!

Hi Beautiful Ladies
Just got back from a walk with Terrell (the black lab). Saw a mother duck and 9-10 tiny ducklings. They must have been newly hatched. So sweet. She was not happy to see the dog and was trying to hide her brood behind the bushes. The dog didn't see the ducks but he heard the quacking and was certainly very curious. In case you're wondering, we live in the suburbs not the city, so ducklings and even more commonly baby geese are often seen in the spring.
I have been under the weather the last few days. Still trying to recover from the upper respiratory that I got last Monday. Doctor changed my diabetes medication to a new once-a-week injectable. So far the side effects have been tolerable except for yesterday I was really nauseated and had a migraine. Don't know if that's from the medicine or just a coincidence.
I took my first shot on Saturday and have been vaguely nauseated since then, kind of like minor morning sickness. Can't eat very much at one time or my stomach hurts - one side effect is your stomach empties more slowly. I have barely been able to get in 1100 - 1300 calories per day. Yesterday I pushed myself to eat more at dinner and it was not a good thing. You would think the weight would be pouring off but it's only slowly inching down. Maybe because I haven't felt up to exercising for a few days. The medicine also causes major constipation!
I am going to see the nutritionist on Tuesday and will see what she has to say about everything. The good news is that my blood sugar is down markedly, not to normal but certainly much lower than I've seen since I was diagnosed. I don't know if that is due to the medicine, not eating very much, or having an easier time keeping my carb intake in check.
I am getting very behind in my work from not feeling well enough to push myself! That and the fact that I took yesterday off to go to my best friend's mother's funeral. They are Greek Orthodox so we had a visitation at the church, then the funeral service, then prayers graveside (at a Greek monastery across state line), then a meal prepared by the Greek nuns. It was a most-of-the-day affair. My friend was very appreciative of the support however.
Hope you all have a lovely day!

Barbie: I can understand your mom going back to work so that she could afford nice clothes to wear to work. Work friendships and relationships are very important to many people. One of my neighbors who is retired has taken a part time job at the county. It is only a few hours a week, but it gets her out of the house and puts her mind into active mode. She seems to like it. :flowerforyou: I'm sorry that Jake seems to be in a funk. Good luck.
Helen: Why do you have a one year deadline to get all the weight off? I've found that this system works really well, but it is not speedy. It took me about 2 years to lose 70 pounds. Maintaining the loss is a challenge, and the reason I'm still here.
We're taking our cars in to VW today to get work done. DH's car will be worked on and mine will be evaluated for work on another day. I am hopeful that we'll be able to get home soon enough to go to my haircut appointment. I have enough doubt that I may call and postpone for another day.

Happy Thursday Peeps!
Just a quick check in and commentary for right now...
Yvonne, hope you had a great birthday!
It’s so much fun hearing the “love stories” – wouldn’t it be neat to be able to bottle the “in love” feeling and take a pill now and then to instantly relive that excitement? The wedding and house photos are wonderful.
My take on politics in general, feel free to skip...
Barbie, my DH sounds a little like Jake. He too got riled up at times. When his cussing at the TV would get too tiresome I’d move to the kitchen with the laptop or go for a walk/work in the garden. Sounds like you do the same.
My DH is unable to be very active so spent a lot of time in front of the TV, or on the internet, especially in the wet winter months. I tended to agree with him politically but enough was enough already.
Things are much better since we no longer watch any local or national news or political comment shows other than Bloomberg at our house which is mostly about companies… the commentary is from analysts around the world and is nothing like what you watch on CNN.
Some day, I will tell my story about helping rewrite the WAC (Washington Administrative Code) for the E911 state excise tax fifteen years ago, and because of that experience I have a basic distrust of politics, politicians on both sides of the spectrum, legislatures and the media. Maybe it’s my ENTJ personality. I know our elected officials try to do a good job but the real work is done behind the scenes by lobbyists, advisors and aides with agendas. Deals are made. So being upset with an elected official, especially at the state and federal level, is often misplaced. Hard to convince other people of that, I know.
I have a friend who’s a Tai Chi instructor and nothing seems to rattle him. He says both parties are basically the same and get their work done by drawing our attention to “sparkly things”. I think there’s some merit to that.
I do know that most of the things I worry about when it comes to political promises or speculation (about anything, really) never comes to pass. Sometimes something better or worse (unintended consequences) slaps us upside the head but worrying won’t do any good. I found that talking this out with DH would help calm him down.
So, here’s a thought that is applicable to just about anything we run up against:
On another note, I overdid it yesterday and this morning could barely crawl out of bed. Couldn’t bend over to get the dog’s dish! Well, I took that curcumin pill with coffee and within 15 minutes, it was 90% better. If this is a publicly traded company, I’m buying stock.
OK peeps, more later.
