Janetr - Your weight loss and determination to keep it off is terrific. Why don't you log the evening grazing? I am not always good (usually alcohol related ) but I always log it. Have you devised a strategy for the evening grazing?
We eat our main course early, just after 6pm usually, Then around 8 pm we have stewed fruit (low sugar) with homemade yoghurt. Then a bit after that I have one ounce of cheese. Then a bit after that, just before 9 pm, I have one or two sweets. All of that fits into my allowance and I feel I have been eating all evening and don't feel deprived. Could you eat later and save some calories for a later treat or two? I eat 1800 calories a day, or less. I earn 600 from exercise. I LOVE my food and must eat. I must eat delicious food that I adore or I feel deprived and that's when I used to eat too much. I obsess about food all day and can hardly wait for the next snack or meal. Luckily I love what I cook. Strategy works for me, I have never been great on willpower. :noway:
Katla - Yes, the banks are closed on a Bank Holiday Monday, as are schools and offices. Most shops are open for slightly shorter hours these days, though in the past they were shut. The transport often runs on a Sunday service, or sometimes not at all. This week is also the half term holiday, so kids are off school. That means it is much more expensive to go away this week and very crowded. My son's family are in Portugal for the week, in a villa shared with my DDIL 'S parents and paid for by them. Jealous? Moi? They all love it down there and are joined in the next door villa by my DDIL'S sister, their son and her husband, who is Portuguese. Sometimes his brother and family join them. A great time is had by all.

Dana my dad was a pilot is WWII too. He flew in Alaska. He was part of the battle of Midway. He was the commander of a scout plane and saw the Japanese were trying to set up a decoy. His plane was running out of fuel so they returned to base. The plane that replaced his did not make it back. I use this day to send prayers to those men and their families. For this mission he earned the distinguished flying cross. I posted a picture of his metal a year or so ago. I found someone who did a phenomenal job of framing it. She was able to make it so the back could be seen with his name and date inscribed of the back.
At that time of the war there was no Air Force. He flew with the Navy. He then became an instructor in Jacksonville Florida to train pilots for the war. I don't think my dad thought himself a courageous man rather a man who tried to do the right thing and do the best he could given the circumstances of where he was.
My mother never liked to watch WWII movies. The stress of those years were not ones she ever wanted to revisit.

All of the wedding cake photos were gorgeous.
Barbie- I am so glad that you and Jake are working/fighting for your marriage.
Machka - So glad your results were good,
Where to start?
Camping last weekend. We had a lot of fun. Sugar was a sweetheart and Snip is a magnificent quarter horse, he stands 16 hands high. I rode Sugar although I'm banned from riding ( It's the if I get thrown that is the worry). I rode Sugar but Snip.....Snip is magnificent. My brother did finally get a bit in his mouth and the saddle has been on 2x. Keira wants to be a cowgirl now. Me too, me too.
Campfires, somemores, stories and some sing alongs. And the horses.
I think I have my deck pretty much planted. It seemed a lot harder and I don't think I had as much help.
Finally got to a doctor last Wednesday. They are going to try injections for my ankle. I am still waiting for them to phone. One of the options is fusing the ankle. I prefer to be able to walk normal for now but if need be then fusion it will be. It was suggested that I dig up my walker and use it sometimes. I'm resisting that.
Another appointment on the 7th and maybe we can talk about the disability forms then.
Took my trike out for a ride. At least I can pedal without pain shooting up my ankle. No weight through it, so that is better.
I loved my weekend but dread going back to work tomorrow.
DGD Keira was asked to be a flower girl at my niece's wedding. She is over the moon excited. I don't know when the other 2 are being asked. I hope soon because she is not going to keep this to herself.
DH took Greysyn out driving today and even let him drive in town. One proud 14 yr. old. He showed Gramps his new learner's license.
Thank you ladies for being here.

Wohooooo running so ya can't catch me! OK is it just me, or were others thinking that too! Your camping trip sounded like a weekend of pure sliced heaven! We used to be historical reenactment campers. Had a trailer filled with cast iron pots, a fan out metal tripod fire pit, two bell shaped wedge handmade canvas tents, with the scalloped Renaissance edges on top, and wooden beams inside. It was magical, and everything had the scent of sandalwood and frankincense from our nightly incense lighting. We acquired a used Oriental rug, and bought many wooden chests for various items like the boys Renaissance clothes, my many skirts, chamois under dresses, and my many corsets. While in Japan I "built" my first corset, and doublet for husband. I had a guy cut me pieces of banding that goes around bricks when they are being transported. I rounded the edges and wrapped each with duct tape. Then to made the vest in layers. First layer was light material, then middle layer was a heavy material that I made pockets for the banding ( or stays ), to slip into, then the outer layer was a brocade fabric. It had fancy metal fasteners up the back. There were stays on the sides, back and front, so I really felt like I was wearing armor! My husband's doublet was black with slashes on it, with red material poking out. Very authentic, people would slash a fitted hand me down doublet, and to make it fit, by slashing the fabric decoratively, they could fit in it! I shall find pictures so you all can see!

Heather - I guess the answer to not logging the grazing food at night is that I'm a "closet" eater. I wait until Jack goes to bed and I "sneak" in the kitchen. It's like "if I no one sees me it doesn't count", "if I don't write it down, it doesn't count", that old nasty mind set of the foodaholic. I do plan a snack in the evening and I do eat it. I usually graze when I'm overly tired, depressed, or stressed and need to go to bed instead of eat. My husband tells me I'm obsessive about my food and logging it and my exercise, but I tell him get used to it because that's not going to change. He's okay with it now and realizes it's part of who I am.

Good afternoon Ladies!
Love al the pictures, keep them coming!
Worked until 1 pm and I will get a full day as compensation. Weather less than stellar, 50's and rainy so I'm glad I worked.
Getting ready to go to NJ to see my Mom and then spend the rest of the weekend at my BFF who lives at the beach. Hoping the weather will be nice enough to go to the beach for a bit. Packing for it and remaining optimistic. Neèd to rethink my on the road food choices. Do not want a big gain.
Last week was a real challenge food wise. Binged a bit and also had a few meals that were less than stellar, especially high in sodium. I gained a bit but kept plugging along. Determination paid off, this morning I had lost all the weight I gained and an additional .8 lbs. A new all time low! My current goal is to be in the 130's. My original goal when I began was 150 which I hit December 2015 but couldn't maintain it. The end of last year I was 159 and recommitted. My goal was to get back to 150, then the goal was 145, I was on a roll so I decided to try for 139 by the beginning of summer. I don't usually set a time limit but did this time. I want to be as low as possible so I can maintain for the summer. I weighed in this morning at 141.8...2 more lbs. to go.
Love and hugs to all.

Afternoon ladies. I have a sleeping cat across my shoulders.
Michele, nail caps are like artificial nails that we all have put on. Well, I have never had them. They come in all sorts of colors. You clip the nail, put the vinyl nail on with a glue inside the nail. According to the info, they stay on about 8 weeks which is about the length of time it would take for the nail to grow that long. I think they kind of naturally come off as the nail gets longer. They are completely safe if the cat chews and swallows them, including the glue. I am looking forward to them being on. He loves perches, including the top of the recliner, right under my chin, around my shoulders. Him and Melody are getting along better. Our living room furniture is pretty close and she will sit on the arm rest of the love seat and the other half on the arm of the recliner. So Charlie and I can be petting her at the same time. So Mr Mozart is on my lap, Melody hops up on the love seat and gets her usual perch and they are literally inches apart. Mr Mozart loves nosed and they just kind of discovered each others noses. Maybe the same way dogs have to sniff each others butts? But then later Melody was running up the stairs growling the whole time while Mr Mozart was chasing her. He has even invaded her sanctuary under my bed. He loves sitting on the arm of the recliner that is inches away from the tv and jsut watching the tv. He loves perched on top of it. I have no doubt he will at one time try to climb on top of the entertainment center. I have had to use a very fierce 'no' which I don't like hearing coming out of my mouth. It doesn't take that bad of a 'no' for Melody.
My Dad always wanted to be a pilot. But when he was in aeronomics school he found out he was color blind. So there goes being a pilot. So during the war, he was stationed in the thick of things in Guam as a mechanic. He never shot anyone but when the planes came in he saw some pretty terrible sights on the planes. He had nightmares right up until he died and he rarely talked about it. Mom got some pretty bad kicks and such while they were sleeping. He actually broke his foot while he was in the hospital from kicking the overbed table during his sleep.
I admire anyone who can sew at a level who can make clothes. I made some of the girls clothes when they were little and actually made a dress for me to wear on the one formal night when we took a cruise. My sister norma wore it when our brother got married.

Janetr - I completely understand the closet eating. I was a closet drinker. I logged the calories, but it was a secret. DH still doesn't know what I used to get up to in the evening. Now I am keeping a chart of my drinking out in the open attached to the fridge. I give myself a gold star for an alcohol free day, a big smile for a planned small drink day, a little smile for a planned bigger drink day and a different, appropriate emoticon if drink has run away with me and I am not proud of myself. I am pleased to say it is working extremely well. Just having it out there makes it more real and I have not "sneaked" a drink since I started it over three weeks ago. I have had the urge, but I've fought it off. I have had only one day when I drank more than four planned units. My weekly total is well under the government guidelines for healthy limits - which is 14 units per week. Last week was 9.75.
Why don't you try something similar, Janetr, for the sneaky eating? Just having it up there in public view is very motivating. It's like an extra injection of conscience. The interesting thing is, no one is interested in it but me and DH never looks at it and couldn't care less. Today was a gold star day. It makes me feel good to be in control of alcohol rather than it in control of me.
There's an interesting series on our tv at the moment called Doctor in the House. A doctor spends time with a family to try to help them with their health problems. Today an 11 year old was obese and very insulin resistant. His gut bacteria was very poor so he went on a "rainbow diet" of many different fruits and vegetables, stewed apples (!), and normal fish and meat. His blood sugar returned to normal, his weight dropped and his activity increased. The moral? Don't eat junk, eat real food, eat lots of veggies and fruit, don't eat too many simple carbs. What a surprise! Nourish those bacteria folks! I did learn that stewed apples are very good for gut bacteria. That's good, because we eat stewed fruit every day!
Lots of love, Heather UK xxxxxxx7 -
Heather, I'm sitting here with butterflies in my stomach just thinking of doing the chart. The thing is rationally I tell myself Jack knows that I eat the crackers, chips, peanut butter or whatever when he goes to eat it and there is less there. He would never say anything to me about what I eat. I have seriously asked him to lock up the snacks that are particularly hard for me to resist. He refused to do so saying he didn't think that was the answer.
I'll have to get the stickers and then muster the courage to be honest with my gold stars. Thanks, Heather, I will be needing help from you to keep at it. Although nothing is a better incentive than the loss I saw this morning. Thanks for the encouragement

Janetr, telling us about your late night closet eating is a good first step in seeking a solution. The next step is being willing to try a solution suggested by someone who has been successful (Heather and her drinking chart). I found when I started this journey that one important tool was being open minded to new ideas. Perhaps others will have suggestions that you can try. Like Heather, I plan my food for the day including a nighttime snack that is a treat for me (on an especially active day it's a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on very high fiber bread).
Joyce, Bernie is ten years old and I still remember that when he was a kitten, my arms and legs looked like I'd gotten into barbed wire because of the scratches. Even so, at times I think I want another kitten.
I started my yard project today and I am so excited about how it will be. It involves digging up rocks from a section of the front yard, straining them to separate rocks from dirt, putting the rocks in a different area, then when the front yard section is cleared, covering the section with weed cloth and having better rocks brought in. It involves things I love--solitary work, work by hand, re-purposing materials (the old rocks) and spending not too much money.

Pip – “High 5!”
Heather – When you find out ‘how’ to let the air out of a spare tire, please let me know. My belly makes me look like I am ‘easily’ 4 months along and just beginning to show. I’m too old for that.
Margaret – Louis’ Dad was stationed in Jacksonville, FL; and, I don’t know what his job was, maybe loading bombs on planes; but, he once told a story of a man walking into the props of a running engine plane. Said he was sick for days! Because he was 2nd generation French, as were his brothers, none of them were sent to Europe; France in particular. He was on a clean-up carrier that had just left port in Guam when they were ‘ordered’ to turn around. They were not told why; but, it was because of Pearl Harbor being bombed – something that even the Captain did not know. I worked with a woman who, she and her husband, were in the “Death Camps”. I saw her tattoo and asked her about it. I thought my boss was going to hurdle over two counters to get to me and pull me away. I did not know what I had done wrong until he told me her story. We finally got to the point that we could talk ‘about some things’. She was like a Mother hen to my boss. But, one thing she did that neither of us could ever stop her from doing was taking the cash drawer out of the cash register and counting it. Thankfully, she was never knocked over the head for it. He kept a loaded gun, and, I finally hid it from her. Whenever she was counting the money, she’d put the gun on the short end of the “L” shaped shelf under the cash register where it was visible. I came in one afternoon and she was down on her hands and knees trying to reach under the toe-kick where the ‘extra’ money from the lunch crowd was put. She wants ALL the money in the cash register. It took me a long time to teach her ‘how to give cash back without using all the small bills to do it. She wanted the change portions ‘full’! Since I worked a split shift while attending school, I took out the extra and left her with just enough to make change for a $50, telling her to put the $50 bill under the drawer. She’d have the money out on the counter and a customer would want cigarettes (in a rack opposite the counter) and she’d turn all the way around looking for cigarettes. We put them in the racks in a particular order, depending on the brands, so that we could reach them with both hands without having to turn our back to the customer.
Louis is also color-blind (green/brown); but not the other kind (pink/blue), so that did not keep him out of a submarine sighting plane. They flew over an active volcano in the early 60’s in Iceland. Some may not know this; but, Iceland is green; Greenland is ice … so named to prevent people from wanting to move there. That’s the story I have always heard.

Enjoying the pictures of you ladies who are traveling and have beautiful views from home.
Pip - love seeing your family photos (and of course, the pooch)
Janetr - Congrats on your loss!
Lisa - Alaska trip sounds like it will be very memorable. I lost my dad in 1969 (age 54) and mom in 1979 (age 63). I love to hear the stories from everyone about their parents.
Thank you all for sharing the stories about your dads' service. My father was 4F but he came home from the west coast and drafting school after Pearl Harbor to work for Cessna/ Beech/ and Boeing during the war. He was on the team that designed the hydraulic system on the B-29. It was a big race between the team in Seattle and the team in Wichita to get the project finished. Wichita won out! I was always proud of my dad and his contribution tho I never really understood the significance until recently.

Lisa - Interesting article. My Mimi was rail-thin most all her life; started putting on weight when she got older. My memory of her as a child are sketchy, at best. Mother was 'big' all her life. When she met my Daddy she was 'curvaceous' and about 145-150lbs (and she was 5'2" - stretching it). She got well over 350lbs after she had a wreck that broke her neck and was in a neck brace 24/7. Back when my mother was born, 1921-ish 'fat babies meant they were 'healthy' babies'. I have no idea why Mimi was so skinny. My Pop (although I only know what he looked like from pictures) was over 6' tall and he was 'lanky'. Mother was short and fat; her brother was tall and thin. Go figure! The 3 of us girls were what I would refer to a 'slim' throughout HS. Each of us have been 'heavy'; but, not really fat. I ended up weighing the most; but, I am also the tallest of the 3 of us. Oldest sister lost weight on WW; I gained. She exercised religiously; I didn't at the time. I lost 40-something pounds in 3 or 4 weeks when I was in ICU with "Lithium Toxicity" ... I would step up on the scales and think 'this can't be right'. I had lost 4 weeks of my life ... never, ever to return to it - memory-wise. I've had other memory destroying events in my life. But, when I saw pictures of myself at my DYS's wedding (granted, I had on flats, that did not help) ... I came home and decided that I would do something about it. My GYN 'ordered' me into a 'diet plan' and it has worked for me. I'm told by the young lady running the program that she wished all her other patients would get on MFP and bring in their daily sheets because that way she could tell them what they are doing wrong in the food they eat - tracking of not. She says a lot of them take a 'well, I 'think' I ate this or that ... but; it doesn't hold them accountable for what they eat or drink. Since going on MFP (introduced by DOGD) ... my water intake has gotten much better ... I drink a 'minimum' of 8 8-ounce glasses of water. The closer I get to my goal weight and BMI, the 'harder' it seems to be to get there. I just hope that, now that I am 'eating' healthier ... I can keep it off once I get there. Some days I feel 'full' and don't necessarily eat 3 square meals; other days I 'graze'. I have not done that since my thyroid was 'over-active'. I take so many medications, all with the side effect of 'weight gain' and cannot go 'off' them because of what they 'keep under control' ... I feel like this is a life-long venture. I'm trying to realize that it will be a 'lifestyle change' ... most days I can do it; then, Louis decides ... 'hey, let's go out tonight'. If he does it on a Saturday (early enough) I can justify not eating lunch and saving up the calories. This past 2 weeks ... I have exercised every day [not a lot, 15 minutes on the treadmill]; but, I do break a sweat. I don't know if I will be 'disappointed', 'relieved' or 'excited' when I step up on the scales tomorrow. I'm constantly between 159 and 164 and it is driving me crazy. I rarely drink alcohol; maybe one drink a month (depending on what or where we are eating). I watched my mother yo-yo all my life. She kept busy doing things so that she did not suffer from depression ... but, late in life she took pills that were Rx'd for her for BP, and other things. Sometimes I get a little frustrated at being so close, yet so far away.

Heather: When we have upsets of the sort you're talking about with your son's family vacationing in Portugal while you are stuck at home we often call it a "poor baby." You would be the "poor baby" in this situation because you didn't get to go to Portugal. (((HUGS)) I am the "poor baby" every time you and your DH go off on a foreign travel adventure. :ohwell:
Sharon: You are a lucky woman to go trail riding. Campfires, s'mores and sing alongs sound like wonderful fun. I'm glad you weren't hurt. :flowerforyou:
Barbie: Your yard project sounds like it will be very satisfying.
It has been a good day. We went for a walk/bike ride this afternoon. DH was riding his Terra Trike while the dog and I walked along beside him. This is the most exercise he's done in months and I am beyond pleased.

Janetr - I think the planned naughty snack/treat that Barbie talked about is a great idea. Eventually you may find you don't need it.
Have you worked out why you need to be naughty? I certainly find it is a rebellion, an assertion of my independence, 'Now I'm alone I'll do d×÷+ well what I please and you can't stop me! ' I think the chart works the same way for me - it's saying, 'I am in control'. Sometimes I think it is anger at myself and a form of self punishment. Your success at losing weight will certainly help with your self esteem. Feeling good about ourselves/self discipline/healthy habits are very important in weight control.
The chart may not work for you, but it's worth a try! You might be able to think of other ways to reward yourself for good behaviour. For me it was important to have it "out there".
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx
PS - Katla - I think it's more that they are spending a whole week with her parents. The parents are paying for the villa and the sister's villa next door. Her parents are very sweet and unassuming and I like them. I wouldn't actually want to share a holiday villa for a whole week :noway: but it seems they have an unfair advantage. :bigsmile:3 -
Louise: Welcome to the group. You will find lots of lovely support and motivation here! No rules, just dive in, tell everyone where you are from and a little about yourself , then feel free to share and vent when needed!
Heather: Your smoked salmon and aspargus supper sounds lovely!
Machka: The weight should drop away soon. Hope you are recovering nicely!
Lanette: Hope the hot weather spell breaks soon!
Penny: Love the photos. The ice looks good since we have been around 90°F for several days.
Sharon: Hope the injections help your ankle!
Lisa: the article was interesting!
KJ: Hope you feel better soon. As for the beauty of Switzerland, I agree with your daughter. When we first arrived almost 40 years ago, we lived on the Swiss side of the border. It felt like being in a perpetual postcard. I had never seen so many green meadows in summer.
Allie: the tidal marshes and ocean views sound amazing!
Janetr: Your ability to keep the weight off is inspirational. I hope I will be as committed!
Chris in MA: Congratulations on the loss!
