Today was just a quick 2 miles coming home from work - I normally walk it but was probably my only chance to run until Monday. Was nice to pick up the pace, although was downhill so that was easy enough. Legs still very heavy but have gotten better rather than worse each day I've run this week so that's been encouraging.
Not sure I'll get a chance to check in over weekend, and knowing how fast this thread moves I'll never catch up so good luck to everyone doing a race this weekend - esp. @MNLittleFinn in your first full.
11-June: 6.50km easy
13-June: 5.18km steady
14-June: 4.59k *slow* + 3.18k easy
15-June 7.94k easy
16-June: 3.67k tempo

June 16 – 7.0 miles Interval Run
Total: 61.25 miles/100 miles
It’s Fartlek Friday! That was a surprisingly awesome fartlek run! The intervals were 200m, 400m, 600m, 800m, 600m, 400m, and 200m. Somehow, I managed to maintain a 9:00 pace for every interval. I had no idea I could actually do that!!! For some of you, that’s nothing, but for me that was a serious accomplishment.

@PastorVincent - Since the last time I posted about the amphipod belt, I tightened it up and put diaper pins on the straps to prevent slippling. It worked; I've run with it a few times now and it fits consistently. I expect to keep using it till the weather gets cold enough that I need to switch back to the Nathan belt for slip-in holsters instead of clip-in bottles. Also paid attention; the squirting issue is only an issue with my Nuun, not with water. Nuun is lightly carbonated, and if I don't have time for it to go totally flat between making it and running, the pressure will build up as my gait shakes the bottle. So I need to use the push-pull caps on the Nuun bottles, but not the water bottles.0

Ah! Carbonation! Yeah, that would be a problem. I have never tried Nuun. I use Propel Zero in my water which is sufficient for like an hour or so run. If I am going longer, I supplement with S-Caps.1 -

@Elise4270 enjoy your new bike! I'm not brave enough to hurtle down the trails on a bike, I prefer my road bike.
Speaking of trails, at the motel I'm staying the lady at the reception told me about a trail along the river. Of course I wanted to run it - but after the first couple hundred meters, I'm pretty sure the trail disappeared. It was all just thorns and swamp. 1km took me more than 45 minutes! I stayed on the road after that. Also, I didn't run even half the planned distance, because I only had a certain amount of time between lunch and a hike in the evening, and the no-trail-run took so long. But I have many more bloody scratches than after any other run I did before , so I guess at least it was an adventure ;-)6 -

Another 4 miles today. Went to crossfit yesterday afternoon and my thighs are smoked. I'm surprised I could even run this morning. 50 Wall balls, 40 knees to chest, 30 ball slams, 20 jump ups (modified pull ups), and 10 deadlifts... the workout took me 10 minutes. Crazy how maxed out you can feel in just 10 minutes.
Also did PT this morning. She pulled and stretched and I did a few exercises and my hip is feeling pretty good. The test will be when I head out for an 8 miler tomorrow.3 -
@MNLittleFinn Good luck on your full marathon tomorrow. No matter what happens in your race tomorrow, you will always be a winner to me. You took on that challenge and worked hard, adapting your training plan, and just running those miles. All of us here are really proud of you and I am really looking forward to your race report.4

AAAAAAH!!! I was told no running for 4-5 weeks. You know that's not likely gonna happen. Hey, I saw the assistant not the surgeon today... So, I don't have to listen right? I can swim or bike, and do glute strengthening exercises. No running until I regain glute strength.
I have running clothes with me... How can I not? GRRRR!
Oooh! That sucks. You probably should listen. Biking is fun and swimming is good, especially with this brutal heat/humidity.
I'll listen. I won't be swimming until the Y opens back up in September. Too many stinky people in the little theraputic pool.
I got the bike. It's 1000° out. But I have my "Embrace the Suck" shirt on..... DH text me he wants to do our Lawton Oklahoma run again in October.... "Ya, me too buddy". I'm so sad. It is just a few weeks, and as long as I can do cardiovascular building, I can handle the little set back.
Although, my surgeon NEVER EVER said "don't run". But... I'll listen . Ima good patient.4 -

ETA @_nikkiwolf_ we have some sissy trails. Last road ride was so hard. Probably cuz my kittens weak. Bet the trails will be hard too, but it'll be technical enough to keep other muscles strengthened and my mind off the daunting heat and searing quad pain of road cycling. Maybe. *Sigh* why am I such a kitten. Haha!11 -

I scored an 8.
However, I could answer yes to the carb loading with no race, complaining about knees, and owning 10 pairs of shoes before I even became a runner. LOL
I got 6, and have the same on shoes and the same thing on losing a toenail... happened from hiking before ever becoming a runner.3 -

I have that same issue, though I've been relaxing my food intake recently. I still log, but have not been restricting calories (still trying to remain low carb, though). As a result of not restricting, I'm over-eating calories every day - even on days when I run 10+ miles (my appetite is enormous). I've not seen as much gain as expected based on CICO calculations, but will have some extra fat to lose when I return to restricting calories next month.
Limiting my carbs, fast foods and evening grazing has helped me so far. Remember you can have all the veggies you want. Stir-fry type meals seem ideal here. I talked with a co-worker that runs at lunch and he grabs steamer bags after his run. I'd probably have to chase that with a protein bar or shake not long after, but it's not a bad idea. Unless your coworkers fuss about the farty broccoli and cauliflower smell.
I tend to do much better with appetite control when eating no plants (except coffee) at all, but I switched this month to get my stomach used to eating veggies and nuts before a backpacking trip at the end of the month. I once ate 9 lbs. of lettuce in a single sitting, so not sure I can eat all the veggies I want.

5k went well. Mixed walking and running, to stay close to my wife. Was hot at 82F. Max HR was 172, but average was 137, so I'd say I was mostly successful keeping it a shake out run.11

@Elise4270 - so sorry about the hip - but that bike looks awesome and you are going to be so ready to come back and kill that October race after all those squats and lunges to strengthen your hip/glutes.
@MNLittleFinn - Best wishes on your Marathon! You are far better prepared than most for the first - Enjoy!
@lporter229 - I have not been doing this as long as you and am not as fast - so the diminishing returns thing would not apply as much to me - but I had some major set backs at age 47 - and came back and got another PR in a HM at age 48. Maintaining muscle can be more difficult for women than men as they age - but it is hard for all of us. Don't give up ...I don't think you have crested the summit yet - maybe just a small hill on the way.

@wishiwasarunner no squats or lunges. Nothing that causes hip flexion at or beyond 90°. Which, come on, I told him I don't run that fast to cause me to lift my leg that high. Still "nope". I think cycling was a concession since I can't swim and don't have access to a recumbent bike. Guess I coulda bought one... Oops.1

12 miles tonight, tomorrow will be a rest day. Tried to run in Zone 1, man it is hard! I kept finding myself inching into zone 3. It will take some doing to learn this 80/20 thing. I think I will have to change RunKeeper and instead of it calling out pace, have it call out heart rate every 2 mins.
Also first run with the Amphipod. I think it will work out okay, but I am going to find out if I can get 2 more bottles for it. I ran out of water by mile 10. I decided to come in at mile 12 instead of push on to at least a HM because of the lack of water. If I am going to get to the 15-20 mile range in this weather I am going to need more water. I think I can fit 2 more on, but it will be tight. Might still have to plan to pass by a water fountain and just accept a stop to refill. Probably cost me 5 mins or so to fill all the bottles.
Also, my iPhone 7+ is a VERY tight fit in that pocket. No getting it out while I run. Thankfully I can pretty much control everything from my Apple Watch.
Having dinner guests tomorrow night so not eating back calories in hope to have some "in the bank" for tomorrow.8 -

The kitchen renovation was at a point where I could actually go out for a run this morning - I was gonna be home after the run so I could lay the clothes out and let 'em dry in the sun (and not worry about the rain or whatever). I can do another tomorrow too! That means I can get closer to being caught up for missing since last Saturday. I actually only have 2 days to make up!5 -
I can cross do a 5k in 93 degree weather off my list.. slowest time yet but that's understandable beings it is hot and I've been sick. I'm proud of myself even if everyone else thinks I'm dumb in my close group.
It was down on the river, which I heard people talking that it's somewhere you shouldn't run except for something like an organized group event. It's a very dangerous park. Good to know! Now if this adrenaline would calm down because I'm ready for bed! Have a good weekend everyone!13 -
