Skip and I ran the first race of a series of 3 last night. It was the 5K. The race started at 6:00 pm and the temp at race time was 90F/32C and humid and hot and hot. I was sweating after the warm up. My time was 34:34 far from my best 5K but it was alright. Skip ran 28:11 and was really upset. It was an out and back and when I saw her coming back she looked awful. She said her ankles hurts. Weird. She was 3rd in her AG 67 out of 127 (very small race obviously), I was 6th in my AG and 107 out of 127. Whew at least I wasn't last. The next race is 7/7 and it is a 8K. Skip will miss that one. Awards will only be given out after the 3 race series.8 -

Ran a very slow 8 miles. My legs were so sore from Crossfit on Thursday that it definitely impacted my running today. On a happy note my hip felt great. It was also hot, 80 degrees and muggy. Thankfully it was cloudy so when they sun would go behind a cloud it wasn't so bad! Around mile 6.5 I saw a dark cloud and thought it would be nice if it rained... a few steps later the heavens opened up and it was a downpour - lol. It's the most soaked I've ever gotten with water squashing out of my sneakers. It stopped just before I finished my 8 miles. I walked another 1.9 miles home and got soaked again just before I got home.

Edit to add, the weather kicked my *kitten*. It was only 73f, but there was a lot of sun and humidity was close to 60%. My runs have been a lot cooler.
Oddly, I feel great with my finish. Sure, I was 24 minutes slower than my hoped for, but I was less than double my first HM time, from less than a year ago.
Congrats!!!!0 -
@MNLittleFinn Way to go!!!! Highest of Fives to you for finishing. And especially in that weather.
I did run today, but it was hot and humid so I only made it 4.1 miles. Last summer in this weather I'd have only made it 2 miles, so I consider that an improvement. Heat and humidity make 4 miles feel like 8.
Gotta check the weather for tomorrow. I'd like to do a long run. It may thunderstorm, which would mean it'd have to be on the treadmill, we'll see.3 -

Way to go! You ran better with quad cramps at Grandma's than I did with quad cramps at Boston.0 -

You have no clue how much you saying that means to me. Thanks.2 -
So I'm going to replace my Fitbit... I'm thinking of the Forerunner 235.
Any thoughts? Pluses? Negatives?
A friend has the viviactive hr and loves it. They are pretty similar, but the forerunner tracks cadence and vo2.2 -

I have the 230. Same thing but no built in HRM. I love it. The cadence info is great to have. VO2 max isn't super necessary, as it's an estimate, but it is cool to have.1 -

You can't go wrong with a Forerunner, no matter what model you choose. I used to have a 205 which was like wearing a house-brick on my wrist. I loved it. I now have the super-basic Forerunner 25 and it does everything I need. Just depends on how many bells and whistles you want. I'm sure I'll upgrade eventually.1 -
I haven't been able to keep up with this thread, so kudos to everyone on your training!
6/1 - 5.20 miles (also starting a diet change to increase carbs slightly)
6/2 - rest
6/3 - 9.00 painful and slow miles in sweltering heat with the sun beating down
6/4 - rest
6/5 - 5.25 miles not as hot as Sat., but still hot (need to stop making excuses for slow pace)
6/6 - 5.37 miles - early am, so started out dark, but nice and cool out
6/7 - 5.00 miles (early am, nice and cool again... had to add some distance to get up to the full 5 miles)
6/8 - 13.18 miles (started out 3am and tired along with GI distress, terrible pace but stuck with it - improved as I got to the last few miles - average total pace 11:13)
6/9 - rest (backpacking in evening, not counting non-running miles)
6/10 - rest (backpacking, not counting non-running miles)
6/11 - rest (backpacking, not counting non-running miles)
6/12 - 6.60 miles, fairly warm, totally new area while traveling for work, slow average pace
6/13 - 6.93 miles, still warm, new area (paved trails mostly today), slow - need to work on that speed
6/14 - 6.12 miles, not quite as warm, but 74% humidity still was tough - still slow
6/15 - rest
6/16 - rest
6/17 - 14.30 miles... hot, slow pace. Stopped and re-filled my water bottle 3 times.

I think @cburke8909 said it best - being your first FMcburke8909 wrote: »It is his first so it's a learning moment. There will be things he did right and things he did wrong and the only way to know is to run the race.
7.52 km Super Long Run this morning ( at least that is how it felt ). Was a planned 20km but the legs are wiped out so I picked the easiest escape option and cut it short.
Then my friend Joan called me and wanted me to lead a mini-group on a hike through the Bush Trails on the West Hills North of Town. Led a group of 5 - from the back of the pack so they would learn the correct Trail's to take. There are a lot of Trail Options so I gave them a Roll of Marking Tape so they could Flag where they thought it needed to be marked. Rather a foolish move cutting a run short then adding a Hike
As others have said tomorrow will be an un-planned Rest Day. I plan on sitting on the Beach at Slave Lake - Hilliard's Bay and watching some fellow athletes complete an open water Tri-Athlon swim.
Based on History I will probably be asked to do a shift in one of the Safety Boats.

Congrats on your marathon @MNLittleFinn! You did it! Very inspiring to have seen you go through your whole training process and do so well managing and accomplishing your first marathon in great form! Hope you are resting and celebrating!1

Somehow, I'm the only one still awake today... weird side effect of my race?
Big thank you to everyone for all the support and congratulations today. The race didn't go as well as I hoped, and that was my fault, but I feel pretty good about it all the same. Looking forward to taking a couple days off and then getting back into it.12 -
@MNLittleFinn I think it's normal to not be able to sleep. I can't push my runs too late in the day or I'm wired like a little kid with a sugar basket.
But since you're up, how about a read? http://www.shutupandrun.net/2015/02/8-reasons-it-might-be-hard-to-sleep.html?m=10 -
Tonight I attempted a 5K PR. Did not go as planned, I stopped running at 3.8 KM unable to take it anymore. Walked a bit and then finished the last 1K at a nice 6:10 min/km pace.
After 1 mile I was at a 4:42 min/km pace which would have given me a 23:30 finish. At 2 miles I was at a 4:49 min/km pace which gives me a 24:05 finish, same as my PR. To be fair though, tonight was the hottest and most humid it has been at night time yet this year up here in Quebec. I think under cooler weather I could beat my PR. The heat was okay actually but the 75% humidity was quite taxing.
2 mistakes I made :
1. I warmed up running a 2KM @ 6:30 min/km pace, I was planning on running at a 7:00 min/km pace, I think I used up a bit too much energy. On top of that, by the end of it I was sweating pretty bad when normally this pace would be quite easy for me so I should have known that tonight was way too humid for a PR attempt.
2. I did not wait long enough between my warmup/stretches and my attempt, I told myself to wait 5 minutes but then I got impatient and started running after 30 seconds of rest. However I had never warmed up before running a PR before and I must say I did notice a nice difference, I didn't need to "get into it", my body was in 5K race/PR mode right away which felt good.
In conclusion, I will try again next time under better conditions and making sure I really take it easy during warm up and give myself more time between warmup/stretching and actually running. It did feel awesome to run fast after 2 weeks of only training at a slow pace though.
2.4KM warmup + 3.8 KM PR attempt + 1KM cooldown = 7.2 KM towards my monthly goal.

PBs to the max today for me at the Winter Solstice Lighthouse to Lighthouse 15 km run! I'd taken it very easy all week after last weekend's 80 km hike, and it paid off. 15 km in 1:25:50 including a 10 km PB of 56:04. Feeling pretty bloody happy!12

You can definitely work up to the 10K distance slowly and steadily.
In Nov I could not run more than a couple of minutes without nearly keeling over. I did the C25K program and completed it in Feb. I have run three 5K races since then and in training have been increasing my miles by 10% every couple of weeks. Last week I was able to run 6.25 miles. I think now I will stabilize at this distance until I run an official 10K on the fall and then proceed to push onward and upward. Good luck in reaching your 5K goal.
Thanks for the response though I'm a little slow to see it, this thread is so active (very nice). That's very inspiring for me. I've just completed week 4 and I am realizing I can do it, but I still have doubts about 30 minutes without walking some. That last 5 minute on the last week four day seemed harder than the first one on the first week four day. But I am determined and I will get there!4 -

Stay focused on the program, and keep a positive attitude and you will continue to improve. You are just starting out on this journey, and that probably means you have quite a bit of your big gains ahead of you still. Who knows, maybe a 10k is in your future? For now little by little, as you can and see where it takes you.1
