@sarahmchugh07 my wife uses the exact same lace pattern as KatieJane for the same reasons. It seems to work very well for feet that swell after the action starts.0

Holy hot out there! Although, I've run in hotter this summer... It was 90 degrees and when the sun was out it felt every bit of 90 degrees... in the shade or when the sun went behind a cloud it wasn't as bad. I went out too fast - I guess leftover from my awesome run this morning and by mile 3 I was hurting. I kept trying to slow down, but my heart rate was too high. I started doing a run/walk, but by 4.5 miles I was spent from the heat and running the first 3 miles too fast. I walked the last 1.5 miles as fast as I could. My heart rate was pretty high just walking. I also haven't eaten much at all today, just some skim milk in a coffee and a half a protein bar. So I might have been a bit low on energy. I ate a lot yesterday so I felt pretty carbo loaded.

@girlinahat LOL, I love the coin collection photo!
I don't have the same coins for comparison, but I tried!
Here's my TomTom adventure in compared to my everyday watch as well as 1 Canadian Dollar / Euro / Franken / Yen / Danish Krona:
I usually can't stand large watches, but I've gotten used to the TomTom. If I ever bought a Garmin, it would have to be the small version of the fenix (5S), I saw the 225, 235 and 630 in store and they are huge.3 -

Yup. That's what the cloud is for, lol.
But also, as I posted a couple posts after this one, you can do it on your phone, you just need to go to the myfitnesspal website on the internet browser on your phone. Then you can upload pics straight from your phone.1 -
Oh yeah that's right I used the internet browser ha ha
@_nikkiwolf_ I can see the TomTom numbers without my glasses too. Now that looks bigger than the 235 to me, I guess I'd have to see them in person.2 -
KatieJane83 wrote: »Ok, so what you need to do if you're on Android (obviously the superior choice ) is just open the myfitnesspal website in your phone's internet browser, rather than using the app. That way, you'll still have the Photo button and use the Choose Files option to browse to the pic you want on your phone
Ohhh *boinks head* duh...1 -
@_nikkiwolf_ @skippygirlsmom
The tomtom I have was a present (a multi sport, no HRM.). The advantage of the shape is that it curves around the wrist and so isn't a large flat round thing on my wrist. The disadvantage is that it can sit oddly on my wrist and the screen can lie further away at an angle. That tend to depend on which wrist which may relate to my slightly odd shaped right arm (broken in a wet floor bathroom incident)
I have slim and bony wrists. Maybe I should test out some other watches but ahem, maybe I shouldn't if you get what I mean....
The tomtom currently does most of what I want. It can sort of do laps when swimming, records GPS when hiking, does intervals etc. I have an HRM I pair with it sometimes. I'm not a massive numbers geek, but I confess I do like the screenshots I've seen of the garmin app.
I like having a 'sports watch' that I use dedicated for activity as opposed to a daily device. I bought the Fitbit charge having had a Fitbit zip attached to my bra for years, mostly to monitor my heart rate. I haven't worn a watch for over 20 years so that's been pretty odd. If I tried to see the numbers without my glasses I'd risk a lot more than not knowing what my heart rate was!!
Incidentally, the standard coin measure we use here is a fifty pence piece. I've never seen another currency coin like it (five sided, quite large) but it was fun to seek through my random coins and less calories than heading to the shops for Oreos.....3 -
@KatieJane83 So smart! My laces are annoyingly short on my Altras when I do the runners' lacing needed for the heel not to slip. I have never seen or heard (or thought) of this. Thanks so much!
Great photo skills @_nikkiwolf_ ! The TomTom looks slightly bigger than my Garmin. I've heard TomToms are a good value for features. I don't know if my 735XT is a ladies' watch since I bought the aqua version or if the model itself is smaller but it is much smaller in the band (width and length) and face (both thickness and circumference) than my husband's 225.3 -

Upon closer look, maybe they have the same area, just a different format. But in any case you're right: both with numbers that are readable without glasses, even for me

I thought the watch would feel big and bulky too. I'm a petite 5 ft tall girl with slim wrists. I wear it a bit higher on my wrist and it's the width of my wrist in that position. I'm use to the size now especially compared to the Fitbit charge hr and it doesn't bother me at all. I love getting texts and notifications on it and being able to decline phone calls.0

After work, pre-grocery run. Which caused me to buy a LOT of groceries.
Only 5.2 miles to goal which i should exceed by quite a bit.
I'm going to try that lacing technique, i'm definitely having some numbness problems.

Well, Turkey Trots are super popular.
I love the when would you skip a run question... none of those answers applied to me....0 -

My answers were pretty much on par with all the popular answers. I only do 1 race a year and it's a Shamrock race. That doesn't mean I don't run on all the other holidays - if it doesn't fall on a rest day I'm running regardless of whether or not it's a holiday1 -

Typical survey, a lot of questions don't have the correct answers.
Favorite season to run: Anything but summer.
Time of day to run: Any/all of the above.
Favorite distance: Half Marathon. I expected that to be most popular, but was surprised at the margin and expected 5K to be in second place.
Where to run: I don't have mountains or a beach, I won't run on a treadmill, I'll run any of the others plus an indoor track.
What to carry: Many of the things they list, plus water, electrolyte drink, in-run fuel, sometimes salt tablets. Can't believe they didn't give any of that as an option.
Who to run with: Any of the above, in various circumstances.
Motivation: Multiple reasons for both questions, some of which aren't shown as answers.
Describe self: Recreational runner who happens to run frequently and is competitive in his age group.
Holidays: I will *run* on any holiday, if it doesn't happen to fall on a rest day. I will *race* on Thanksgiving and New Year's Day whenever I'm not injured on those days. I raced on July 4 for the first time this year, and would race on any of the other holidays if there was an attractive race; but the St. Patrick's Day themed races I do never actually fall on St. Patrick's Day.
Reasons to skip an outdoor run: Sick. Injured. Busy traveling to get to a race. Can't believe they left sick and injured off the list of answers. "Don't feel safe" pretty much covers all the other answers they listed.
1 -
Rest day today. It would be traditional to sign up for more races, but I didn't. I contented myself with picking up the packet for tomorrow's minor 5K.

So at work this afternoon, I got pulled into a project, involving listening to collector calls and seeing how well they match the transcripts. It's tedious. Oh, so tedious. I'll most likely be doing the same thing all damn day tomorrow.
The tedium really made me stressed, for some reason. I just did NOT want to be doing this *kitten*. I felt like they were just throwing this mundane task on me because no one else wanted to do it.
Needless to say, I wanted a good run after I got out of work. It was nice enough outside, sunny and high 70s, so I put on my running clothes/shoes and headed out to Busse Woods.
When I run at Busse, I leave my car at work and run to the woods from there. It's just under a mile to where the main trail picks up. Usually what I do is run a pre-determined number of miles out, then turn around and run back. Today I decided I would run out to the elk pasture, which was about 4.5 miles away.
When I got to the pasture, I stopped to look at the map. Did I want to turn around and head back, or just keep going and try to do the entire loop? It was pretty equidistant either way, so I opted to keep going and complete the loop. I saw some parts of the woods I've never seen before, which was nice, but after I hit about 7 miles I was starting to get tired and thirsty and wondering why I decided to do this. According to the map, once I hit the boat launch area, it wasn't much farther to the spot where I started. But it seemed to take forever to get to that boat launch.
Once I did finally get to the boat launch, the next thing I was looking for was the bridge over Higgins Road. Once I hit that bridge I was home free. Of course, it took about another half mile to get there. "WHERE THE *kitten* IS THAT BRIDGE" I kept thinking.
Finally, I saw the bridge. Oh thank you, Jesus. By this time I had run over nine miles and I was starting to feel dehydrated (Note to self: next time I decide to run the entire loop, bring water. There are ZERO water fountains there.) I turned back towards Woodfield Road and looked at my watch, which said 9.18 miles. I decided I'd run until 10 miles and then walk the rest back since I was almost at the end of the trail and just had to do the mile back to the car.
I hit 10 miles right around Whole Foods, stopped my watch, and walked the two blocks back to my work building. By now it was almost 7 pm. I checked to see if the building was still open so I could get some water, but it was locked. So I went to my car and drove to Starbucks and got the biggest iced tea they had.
My feet hurt. My legs are stiff. But my hip is okay. It's been fine ever since I switched back to the ten-eighties exclusively. I need to order another pair soon.
32,623 steps so far today. New record.
July total - 103 / 100 - GOAL!!!12 -
@RespectTheKitty I remember you posting a out your first 10 mile LR. Now you just ran a mid week 10 miles just for the heck of it. That's amazing improvement. Awesome running!2
-
My turn for the RW survey!
Favorite season to run: Fall, of course
Time of day to run: Anywhere from late morning to early evening
Favorite distance: 10k
Where to run: Dirt trail and paved path
What to carry: Phone, GPS watch, keys, pepper spray, sometimes a visor
Who to run with: Self
Motivation to start: Weight concerns
Motivation to keep running: Pretty much every reason they gave there, but primarily to control weight and relieve stress/anxiety/depression
Describe self: Fitness/frequent runner
Holidays: All of 'em!
Reasons to skip an outdoor run: Too icy, too cold, too hot, too dark (all of which will send me to the treadmill)0 -

I know, right? And I don't even consider that my long run for the week. That'll come over the weekend.
Tomorrow will be a light day, to recover from today and prepare for the weekend.2 -

When my alarm went off at 5:20am, it was 80-feels-like-85, with a 40% chance of thunderstorms. Tomorrow was supposed to be cooler and less humid, so I went back to sleep.
At 7:30pm, my teenager asked me to drop her off at the trail I run on, so she could walk. I wasn't going to spend 40 minutes driving back and forth and back and forth, or sit in the car waiting for her, so I finished my dinner and put on my running clothes and tried to ignore the fact that it was now 89-feels-like-99. She wanted to do her own thing, and we had an hour before the dusk curfew, so agreed that she'd just call me when she was turning around. She called when I was less than a minute from my normal turnaround, and I caught back up to her at 3.1 miles. She was ready for company at that point, so we walked the rest of the way together.
It was a surprisingly fine run, despite the heat and the belly full of dinner. I found myself breathing harder than normal, but part of that was that I was singing along to my music to distract myself from being hot.6 -

The options for the last question re: cancelling a run are effing killing me- did they even ask the Canadian runners? lol. I love running ice and it 100% makes me a better runner in the summer in my experience, why would I cancel for that???? But then again I'm in the minority of almost every question soooo maybe I'm just an oddity
