Chris Happy Birthday!
Machka I love your hats! I love hats, too, but rarely have an opportunity to wear one.
Barbie Your 87 year old student makes me smile. There are a couple of octogenarians in my Jazzercise class and they are so inspirational. Gotta keep moving.
Allie Feel better soon!
Re Always great to read your uplifting posts.
Heather You have taken to that Instant Pot like a duck to water. I think you have been plotting & planning to own one ever since you bought one for your son.
I store my 6 qt 7-in-1 Instant Pot in a cabinet in the garage just off the kitchen. I use it for several days in a row, then it spends 3-4 days in the garage before I need it again. I bought an extra liner (the nonstick ceramic one), an extra sealing ring, and some stacking pots (for pot-in-pot), a cheesecake pan, and a silicone egg basket. Love all my options. I haven't proofed bread dough yet, we usually just do the whole job in the bread maker, but I bet it would work great. Tonight I had zoodles and meatballs with a minimal amount of angel hair pasta. It was delicious and so quick and easy in the Instant Pot.
Yesterday I cooked rice and a whole chicken in the Instant Pot, returned the bones to the broth to make bone broth, and shredded the chicken in my mixer & then added the rice to make food for my little Farley. I added a Vit D capsule and some chondroitin and glucosamine. He LOVED his new food and his GI problems are rapidly resolving. He is perkier than he has been for awhile and I noticed he had enough energy to actually lift his leg up to pee properly today.
Concerning mattresses: I like to sleep on my TempurPedic bed (foam mattress like Katla's) or on my recliner chair (La-Z-Boy). Not sure which I like better, they are both pretty great.
Concerning shorts: My legs look fine in shorts but my tummy not so much. And just for the record, I hate bras and wear them only when I have to.
Update on my gigantic floater. The retinal specialist said it was a "monster" of a floater. My option is vitrectomy, as Lanette (I think) mentioned. That seems scary to me but it is apparently a relatively safe procedure. It will lead to premature cataract formation so I will have to have cataract surgery probably within 3 years. I don't want to go through all of that, but this floater affects my quality of life. It affects work, driving, and my mood. Ugh. I will have to mull it over for awhile. Poop.
RANT ALERT: My 2 cents' worth on health care: Providers order too many tests because they don't want to miss anything, are pressured by patients, and are vulnerable to being sued. Many patients see their physicians for minor problems which don't really warrant a visit. There are people who use the (expensive) emergency room as their PCP, either because they don't have better options or are uninsured. Many times the hospital eats the cost of those visits. There are OB patients and their doctors who schedule a C-section (expensive and unnecessary) because it's more convenient than a vaginal birth. There are people who have no quality of life but are kept going on life support long beyond any meaningful existence. I could go on and on. In the USA, we have decided that length of life is at least important as quality of life, and we are impatient when we are ill or injured or just pregnant. Not enough emphasis is placed on lifestyle changes, and too many pills are prescribed. Many people are not educated about when and why to see their physician, so they end up seeing their physicians for minor problems which eat up health care dollars. And then there is the issue of noncompliance, which leads to worsening of chronic illness and higher medical costs. Add to that the fact that there are people who abuse their bodies with various substances and expect the health care system to sort it out when it comes home to roost. Between physicians who order too much to avoid malpractice suits, the greed of pharmaceutical companies and insurance companies, and patients who are noncompliant, uninsured, underinsured, or unsure when/why to see their doctors, it's no wonder health care costs have spiraled out of control. The result is that certain patients that we as a society need to take care of sometimes end up without all of the care they need. It makes me crazy. Our lawmakers are not going to solve this.

Tere ... You are beautiful! Loved your photo!
Allie ... I read through just enough to see how you're doing. Sorry you've been under the weather... stress will do that to you.
Margaret ... wise words ...
DrKatieBug ... so sorry about your cousin. I am confident that you will conduct a funeral service that honors both your cousin and God.
Chris ... Happy Birthday!
Pip ... it's nice to have others notice ... all that running and biking ... I would imagine you have great legs!
So what's got you cussing?
Same old stuff going on here. It's a little disheartening and it's taking a lot of effort to keep depression at bay. Had to fire yet another care aide ... this one mixed up clearly marked medications. Son had a difficult 24 hours as a result. My eating is off the charts stupid and I can't seem to stop myself and my motivation is tanking ... again. There's a pattern and I need to stop it.
Becca ... I can't imagine sending my son off to one of the armed services. I can hardly bear thinking about him going back to his school in 4 weeks. I get quite melancholy about it. I have the utmost respect for you and your family!

Beth (((Hugs))) At least pick quality foods that you love while you are off the charts. Don't punish yourself by eating food you don't love.

Karen VA ... I think your rant was pretty much spot on and you're right ... Politicians will never be able to solve the health care debacle.3

no reason about the cussing bit that's just part of me.... it's like saying, if, and or but, just part of my nature0 -
Barbie: Your dance student in her 80's sounds like a pistol. Wish I had someone like her in my local circle of friends. Such an inspiration.
Katla: Maybe DH has a rich fantasy life too, which includes getting you a horse that would ride in the trailer, that he would tow in the new truck...kinda sweet.
Chris: Happy birthday. May you be as happy as you have been successful with your incredible weight loss journey.
Weekends are my day to workout in the pool. I love water jogging, aqua aerobics and lap swimming, but the gates open too late for me to get in for a morning swim before work.
Several friends and relatives have contacted me to ask if the high rise fire in Honolulu was our condo building. No, however, our building was built in the same year. Our board smartly invested in retrofitting sprinklers on every floor over 10 years ago. As I write this, our unit is getting some light fixtures replaced, a paint touchup and next week, air conditioning repair. Some lucky person is going to buy are very nice, clean, secure condo. Pray that person is as eager and ready to buy as I am to sell.
I'm not quite done with 'Younger Next Year for Women', (audiobook from library), but have listened to enough to feel I'm on a good path towards life as an active and healthy senior. Sooooo grateful that I got started cementing a lifestyle change in my 50's, was referred to MFP and stumbled into this thread and all you remarkable women.
Stay well. We can do this.

Machka: What a beautiful place to live! I love your graph, too.

Machka – Wow, what a temperature difference. Enjoy your hilly ride! I like the idea of twin mattresses on a king sized bed and may consider that. Our current mattress weighs a TON!
It was a good ride, and I felt surprising comfortable with it. I've been doing a rise over run calculations to determine the difficulty level of rides, and a couple years ago, a ride that came up with a calculation of 1 was borderline too difficult. This one came up with a calculation of nearly 2 which would have been completely impossible a couple years ago, but now we rode it without too much difficulty at all.
But the temp is a hard to adjust to!
We moved a few months after getting the two attached twins, and didn't need to hire a moving van or anything ... just loaded stuff into our van and BIL's truck (ute) and were done. Plus being able to choose the mattress that works for each of us is great!

Karen in VA - I also agree, your rant was right on! I wish we could wave a magic wand and change things.
Keep us posted on that floater. I wasn't aware of the cataract formation, good to know. So happy Farley is feeling better and you can enjoy him for a while longer. I like the suggestions on more accessories for the IP.
Beth - so sorry you are having trouble finding good caregivers. Here's praying the next one you hire is a gem!
Rori - whew, glad your condo in Hawaii is OK. I've heard the market is super hot there so hopefully it will get sold quickly at your asking price (or better!)

Since getting the two I have, I've been looking for opportunities to wear them. We go to the theatre (plays) and to symphonies, etc., so I wear them there. I'll also wear them out to dinner if we're celebrating something special.KetoneKaren wrote: »RANT ALERT: My 2 cents' worth on health care: Providers order too many tests because they don't want to miss anything, are pressured by patients, and are vulnerable to being sued. Here in Australia, I've been pleasantly surprised by the Drs who tell me that they won't do surgeries or procedures that I don't need ... and Drs who suggest lifestyle changes.
Just before I joined MFP, I went to a Dr who did bloodwork as a part of my annual "complete physical" and told me that my cholesterol was high and there were a few other borderline issues. She said she could put me on medication, but she thought that if i lost 10 kg, it would likely be all right ... however, it was up to me. I went back in 6 months later, after losing 15 kg, and asked for the bloodwork to be repeated. Everything was good! She even rang me at work to tell me! But she did say it is rare that a person will take a Drs advice and lose the weight.
Just recently my gynaecologic oncologist told me that some would just do a hysterectomy if someone presented with my symptoms, but after reviewing everything he didn't feel that was a necessary procedure, so he opted for a much less intrusive option ... the procedure I had in May. I appreciated that ... nice to know that there's a Dr who won't leap into major surgery right away.

Call me crazy but I love to see other people happy and succeeding .
Good Evening my dear Friends,
Katla, glad you and Arrow had a good day and it’s always nice when a DH takes us out to lunch.
Barbie, I’m the one of us that doesn’t want to cut down to one car but I totally agree that one less in the driveway would be nice. Especially with DD living here so we now have three. DH only goes grocery shopping in his car but I use mine for going to the gym, the Moose, out with friends to the beach or lunch. I just would feel confined with only one but we may keep the two we have for years to come. Mine is a 2010 but just turned 50K miles on the trip to Florida.
Chris, happy, happy birthday. I hope it’s been a great one.
Tere, it sounds like you have your hands full. I hope the DGD found most of her needs at the consignment shops.
Lanette, I was interested to read about your mattress. I have never had one that I considered really comfy for a long time. I was just talking to DH about wondering the price of the mattresses that hotels and cruise ships have. Theirs are so comfortable and mine just isn’t.
Margaret, I like your proverb and outlook for Allie.
Pip, you know you can cuss here….it will just say “kitten” when we read it. Lol I think that is so funny!!!!
Allie, if Tom is worried about what he will find when he returns from Florida, maybe you should suggest that he might not want to go. ?? LOL
to all the Newbies. Come often and join in the chat. This thing works!! Please sign your post with what you want to be called. It makes it easier for us to respond to you. Also a location is great, be it specific or general. We are happy to have you join us.
Watched the Women’s finals of Wimbledon today but didn’t know the guys in the doubles so didn’t watch it. I’ll be watching the Men’s finals tomorrow and then can get back to life. Lol I hope you all had a wonderful day.
Sending love, good thoughts and cool sunshine to all of you.
I Love you

I have been listening to podcasts from "The Minimalists". I highly recommend them especially if you are wanting to thin down your possessions and make positive changes in you overly busy life. I was inspired this week to tackle some boxes of very sentimental possessions. Part of the thinking is that memories aren't in the things and it's possible to hold onto precious memories without being burdened by having boxes full of "stuff" as evidence. Part of the challenge is that just as I'm ready to put something in the trash or the box for the thrift shop, Jake suggests that it might be something that the theatre or a museum or antique shop would want. Once I'm ready to let go, I just want to get the stuff out of the house.
The new monitor for Jake's defibrillator arrived today and he installed it easily and with no grumbling or cussing which made him feel really good. When a challenge scares him, he often doesn't respond well. He was very proud of himself.
This has been a good day---lots of dog walking, some weed pulling, a walk with a friend, a two hour nap, some decluttering, completed some tricky computer chores, and now I'm riding the exercise bike and watching the Mariners baseball game.

I've downsized significantly twice.
One trick when it comes to sentimental possessions is to take photos. It is much easier to store and haul around photos than it is to store and haul around the actual items.

Hi Gals,
Gals who color their own hair – good for you! I can imagine being that coordinated!!! I just let it be it’s own color except when I am feeling a bit more financially sound and I have a bit of a wild child color added in…
Chris - being down in weight with a challenging year is an amazing feat you should be so proud of yourself… and HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Tere – what selection you have in grocery…. I generally hate shopping, but love grocery shopping as I find it a great adventure to find some hidden discount gems and create something wonderful with them.
Marcelyn – I loved your example of the European bed and it made me think of my grandparents, I was about 12 and with my family had gone to visit the grandparents, they had just moved into a new home - Mom and Dad had the guest bed room and the 3 of us kids were on the floor in the living room. So the Grands had gone to bed; Mom and Dad were getting us settled when there was this awful crash from the Grands bed room we all went dashing in – to find them between the beds which had not been hooked together properly and with hard wood floors when the decided to have a little nookie time slide apart and there were 2 naked old grandparents on the floor! Everyone was fine, embarrassed! And I had never seen a naked man, my parents were beside themselves!
Margaret - AWE – great wisdom
Pip – I put that in the translator – oh my- LOL
So I’m over all doing well, working hard on the food issues and the financial issues, I would really love to be debt free, but that is easier to dream of; then to make a reality, but making the little changes one at a time that will get me there. Anyway that is the back story to about 3 weeks ago when one of the embroidery machines acted up – I called the repair guy who is usually able to walk me through and this is more serious, so there are 5 hours of DRIVE time – plus repair time I have to pay for, so I’m looking at a thousand dollars or so (his guess) I don’t have that kind of money…. It’s depressing. But I have 2 machines so just can’t get two things done at once…. I have been working with him to see if there is any other client down here that I could split the drive time charges with…He thinks this is a 2-3 hour job…. So if he could to do another job it would be a great spilt - So I was telling this to a neighbor who said he thought I was working later into the night than usual, and he offered to loan me the money, no interest, no payment schedule, just pay when I can…. I don’t think I can say yes, it is too weird and a ton of pressure (self generated), when I am already feeling overwhelmed with the other debt. But so nice, I could not believe that he and his wife would offer. That’s the kinda thing that doesn’t happen to me… Just thinking about them being so nice to me makes me cry.
Smiles

I will add t the health care vent. My famil doc that we have had for many years was dropped several years back from our insurance. Why?????? He prefers to do simple surgeries in his office like an ingrown toenail, not on a diabetic, remove simple lesions from your skin am dif he feel like they need to be biopsied he does. And other things. Insurance didn't like that so they dropped him. Really there are dpfew insurances that will still cover him. But my co-pay to see him would be $15 and his payment is $25 so I go ahead and see him. They cut their office costs down by not being in a fancy office commented to a lab and xray, they don't accept credit cards at all so that they don't have to pay that fee for the equipment for them. Many other things they do to keep costs down and go ahead and keep their patients.
Heather, what do you guys over the pond think of our Williams sisters? To me they are just to muscular and feminine but they sure can play tennis. But they look twice as big as their opponents. Itis always good to see the winner and loser do soeme kind of a hug after the last match. I'm not sure how much emotion is in it. Maybe they are just glad it's all over.
On the news tonight there was an article that one of our track and field Olympians is trying t get his medal back. He says before he raced, he had a 3 hour make out session with his girlfriend that did take steroids. HUHHHHHH?
Have I mentioned how precious my baby is. I a, going to have to get a good picture of her and her glorious tail someday to show you. But he is so soft. Today I can't remember which one was on my lap but the other came. At first one was in my arms and the other on my lap but Mr Mozart moved down to my lap. They gave each other a good bath. Mr Mozart didn't get into Melody's ear so much. Eventually while Melody was bathing him, he bathed himself also. I hope Chalrie treasures and remembers those times when he gets really frustrated with him. I think he just likes him and doesn't love him like me. But he enjoys playing with him and watching run through the house with breakneck speed to catch a piece of paper I threw. But do you thing the award winning pitcher could throw that wad of paper?????? Sometimes I feel like a mother of a two year old the amount of times I saw NO but the internet says a 4 month old is the equivalent to a 6 year old human.
Got to get in bed so I can get up in the morning. Sometimes I look forward more to going to McDonalds to get my sausage biscuit and senior come more than church. Eeeeew that's bad of me.

Sunday -- Sort of a "Tasmanian Flat" recovery ride today ... also another chance to acclimatise to the chilly conditions.
Just for fun, we did a little side bit which I knew was a less travelled segment. Two Queen of the Mountains for me, and my husband placed 4th and 5th. Not bad!
Distance: 41.4 km
Elevation: 234 m
Moving Time: 2:09:40
Elapsed Time: 2:52:10
Speed: Avg: 19.2 km/h | Max: 32.8 km/h

I started paying a little bit extra off my debt each week ... my regular monthly payments + an extra $10/week.
At the same time I also started paying myself ... 10% of every pay would go into a separate account. That was emergency money, and when it got to a certain amount, after several months, I put about half of it onto my debt.
Doing those two things helped a lot!

Kim - Those bills can be such a shock. Personally I have a fear of being indebted to people, but I did borrow from my friend's father's bank. Those were the days when you got personal service! Otherwise I've had credit card debts that I hated. Thankfully, I got a teeny, tiny inheritance from my godmother which enabled me to pay it off. I think you are AMAZING!
Karen - Excellent analysis! :flowerforyou: Everywhere in the world has problems funding their health service in one way or another, but the insurance companies sure seem to have you over a barrel. I agree profoundly about keeping people alive unecessarily, but that tide seems to be changing slowly. Also, so much more could be done, if there was a will to, to help people take more charge of their own health. Over here the emphasis at the moment is the huge cost of elderly care. No one says much about keeping people healthy and active for longer. Simple things could make a huge difference. It's a mystery to me why politicians can't see this. Especially when it would save loads of money for the state.
I am making the sour dough bread today in my IP. We love this style of bread and I use a random mixture of strong, spelt and rye flour. It's nice not to have a 24 hrs delay before I cook it. I turn mine out of the greased IP pot onto floured baking paper. I put a greased bowl over it while it's rising and lift the whole thing over to the heated baking sheet. Getting the bowl off for the final browning is tricky. I usually resort to a bread knife as a lever, then oven gloves. Here is the link. It's from This Old Gal, a great source of recipes, though people say the #17 cheesecake is better than hers.
https://thisoldgal.com/instant-pot-yogurt-whey-dutch-oven-crusty-bread/
I only ever have one slice at a time for my lunch. I could eat the whole thing.
DH didn't sleep again, though he slept last night ok. He is fairly philosophical about it. I found him reading in the spare room this morning.
We also have linked beds. The base is two beds with joining bars and the mattress used to be two zipped together so we can have different types. DH's mattress was softer and wore out earlier, so he bought a new, posh, foam one, so we are unzipped, but joined by the fitted sheet. I love it because I can't feel him turning over in bed. In Europe people often have their own single duvets as well, which is a great idea. We have one super king size, but we do like different weights, ideally. I am always hot in bed. At the moment our summer thin one is perfect for me.
Lots of love, Heather UK xxxxxxx5 -

Yes! That was something I noticed during our recent trip. In several places we shared an ordinary queen-sized bed, and I could feel his every move. Now that we're back to our linked twins, it is much better. The base is linked so I can still feel him turn over once in a while, but nothing like those queen-sized beds. I've been loving our bed system since we've been back!!

I have seen it in person once, but watch it regularly on television. I don't have the patience to wait four to six hours to see them zoom by in minutes. I would much rather watch it from start to finish at home. The one time I did see it, they passed right under the window of my office in Geneva, Switzerland.
On our recent trip, we coincidentally followed the route they took in the Jura mountains arriving at the finish line not long after the race, so we were able to appreciate the route they took and enjoy the efforts of the small villages to decorate for the race. One village had created all kinds of displays around bikes, including the one below.

Wonderful!!
Yes, I do like watching the whole thing on TV and have wondered whether or not I'd like it in person.
My husband and I followed part of their route (cycling tour + Paris-Brest-Paris) in 2007 through Belgium and into France ... we weren't trying to follow their route, and only noticed that we were when we started coming across the art.

Good morning all!
I've been busy with my friend, Beth, from Austin, Texas. We had an amazing day yesterday at Lake Ouachita in the Natl Forest. Just beautiful in the woods. It started to rain and it was so wonderful to sit at the picnic table and listen to the rain hit the canopy above us and not get wet. For a while anyway until the clouds really opened up with a down pour!
Beth uses MFP too so we had eggs, strawberries and cantaloupe for breakfast. We packed a small cooler with some sparkling water and Gatorade for DH. But we stopped at Shangri La Resort on the lake and ordered up pie ala mode.
The cafe is famous for the homemade pies and they are so good. OMG. That turned out to be our lunch.
We drove back home to reboot and check in on Dolly then we went downtown Hot Springs to take Beth to see "Bath House Row". We toured the old Bath House that is now a museum. Very interesting to see how a spa was in 1805! People would come from all over the world to soak in the natural Hot Springs.
I've been to Quawpaw Bath House several times. They have 4 pools of different temps. The Springs come from the ground from 96* to 104*. What a wonderful experience! The attendants keep your water glass full of pure cold spring water to keep you hydrated. When you come out of the waters you feel so energized, relaxed, revived and exhilarated!!
We ate BBQ for dinner. It's Memphis style BBQ at Smokin in Style. I had pulled pork sandwich without the bun. They top it with coleslaw and I had baked potato salad on the side.
When we got home I had beer! Needless to say I was 300 calories over. But I had a glorious day with an old friend! And I walked over 3000 steps with my cane.
Back to my diet tomorrow!
Mattresses: we bought ours at Mattress King. It's a king "tempurpedic" and was around $1400. The sales person tried stealing us to $2-3k beds but I kept reminding her I didn't want to spend more than $1000. But we ended up going a bit higher. It's a "plush" and very very comfy! I love it!
I need to catch up with y'all. I'm not on here for a day and I missed so much!
I'm leaving you with a picture of Lake Ouachita from top of Hickory Nut Mtn.

Great conversations on this forum!
Also had a great conversation with my bff who notices that I am patient about getting clutter taken care of, and puttering around with little projects makes me happy. She gets overwhelmed and stops, I do little bits and get encouraged--kind of like weightloss--and I allow myself to stay on a plateau and not do any cleaning out-kind of waiting for inspiration kind of.
Rori each little project is getting you closer to selling the condo. And i feel exactly the same way about finding MFP for lifestyle changes.
Kim remember when your embroidery business was just getting started? How about reaching out to an even wider circle of crafters to find someone else to share the repair guy?
