@skippygirlsmom Wow has that girl grown! Or maybe it's the dress and not running clothes.
@MNLittleFinn Rest-day-itis? Get a bike? Go swim? Weights?3 -

@skippygirlsmom - AWWWW - She's beautiful and I don't blame you for crying. Dropping off kids at college both times - one 2 hours away; and the other in NYC, I was a wreck! I made it out their dorm door but then came the tears.
@MobyCarp & @elise470 - cracking up at the Fibonacci talk. I always have students write programs to calculate fibonacci numbers. Their program has to ask which # in the series do you want to see and then their little algorithm calculates it and displays it.
August - 75 goal
8/1 - 4.1
8/2 - 5.00

It's all the coffee... I don't drink coffee a lot, and wanted some today... it's made my hyper....I need to drink coffee more often.5 -
Thanks @ddmom0811 and @elise4270 she does clean up nicely ha ha She went out the door with running clothes and I said you don't have practice until Monday, she said never too early for speed work on the track. Well okay then.4

8/1 8miles 1hr:16m:25s
8/2 6miles 60m:39s
Well, I decided to go for a run at 11:45am today. Yikes it was hot! I went really slow and took two short walk breaks towards the end. I did run up a hill twice which surprisingly didn't feel as hard as it looked.
Going to head out early tomorrow, it's much better running before it gets too hot and sunny.3 -

I feel ya, I have stuck sitting at desk-itis really really bad right now.
Yep me too (stuck sitting at desk-itis!) I even had to take Hobbes the Vizsla to doggie daycare to play since it is a rest day and he gets crazy when it is hot and he won't/can't really be outside for long.0 -

I am SURE they were espresso brownies and not some other kind of brownie...4 -
@MNLittleFinn , @5512bf ,@skippygirlsmom, @cburke8909 and @PastorVincent Thanks so much for the great advice. I could start working in one day a week (or so) to work on speed. I could drive up to the high school track and do intervals there. And there are some pretty good hills at the park or even one behind my house that I could work on. I really appreciate this group so much.1

@skippygirlsmom - I feel nostalgic seeing her all dressed up for her last 'first day' of school picture! It seems like we have watched her grow up here! I also cried when we left my daughter at college, even though it was only on the other side of LA and about an hours drive. I knew our lives weren't really going to be the same again. I have learned though that the closeness doesn't go away other than physically - it is just managed with lots of texts and phone calls rather than in person now.
@ddmom0811 - Great idea with the Fibonacci program!
@MNLittleFinn - coffee/caffeine is good for running.1 -
PastorVincent wrote: »@kgirlhart you already got great advice from @MNLittleFinn @5512bf @skippygirlsmom and @cburke8909, but allow me to combine it all into a simple suggestion:
Run 1 long run at conversational pace per week. This will help you build distance
Run 1 "fast" run (tempo, intervals, fartleks, what ever) per week
Take 1-2 rest days per week
Do conversational runs a middle distance for rest of the days.
That will help you build distance and speed. Pay attention to your body, and if that is too much then move the speed to every other week instead, or reduce long run distance, or some combination there of.

First run with my new garmin today. I got a forerunner 235, never had a garmin before and I found it rather exciting seeing my pace 'live' as I ran!12 -

This is the one that I want. It's going to be my reward if I meet my pace goal at September's race. I'm looking forward to reading your opinions on it as you use it more.3 -

I only made it 7 miles before the sky opened up. I enjoy running in the rain, but this was a bit much even for me. The weather was looking iffy when I headed out and I’m still battling some chest congestion so I stayed closer to home and just doubled over a shorter route. When the rain came down I was actually only a quarter of a mile from home, so I sprinted home and called it a day.
I also recently made a change to my training schedule. I had been blowing off my strength and balance training because I was trying to do it after my run. I tend to leave it all on the road and have nothing left after the run. So, I decided to flip flop the schedule and workout first then run. So far, that’s been working out much better. Also, by working out first, I don’t seem to need as much of a warm up for the run. I just need to work on starting earlier!

8/1- Bike day (but those miles don't count here)
8/2- 4+ morning run...I hate mornings
Total: 4 / 70
On another note...my feet hurt! My left more than right, and mostly in the heel. It doesn't bother me at all when I'm not on my feet, but after I've been sitting for a while (at my desk or in the morning) and get up it's the worst. I'm thinking it's due to my being 30+lbs higher than normal. I'm stretching more than I did in the past. Any thoughts?
(For context I've been out of "training" for 2ish years. Prior to that I was an avid Iron-distance triathlete. I'm wearing the same running shoe I wore 2 years ago. No, not the same pair...I bought 3 pairs.)1 -

Could be one of two things... either your plantar fascia or your achilles. I had Plantar fasciitis several years ago, got so bad I had to have surgery. The pain is in the middle of the heel and is always 10,000 times worse after you've been sitting for a while or asleep and then you get up. (I was also seriously overweight when I had Plantar fasciitis, and had a job that had me on my feet 10+ hours a day.)
If the pain is in the back of the heel, it's probably the achilles. That's what I'm dealing with right now. And again, the pain seems to be worse after I've been sitting for a while, but it also hurts somewhat when I move around.
PLEASE NOTE THAT I AM NOT A DOCTOR. This is just my best guess based on my own experiences. If the pain gets too much for you to deal with, please do see your physician or PT.2 -

Thanks! I was thinking plantar fasciitis as well. It's not too bad, goes away quickly with some stretching, and doesn't bother me when I run. I already have orthotics, so it looks like icing and stretching even more, along with some weight loss, will help.

I'm going to ask for further clarification on just where in the heal since several things come to mind.

Date :::: Miles :::: Cumulative
08/01/17 :::: 5.5 :::: 5.5
08/02/17 :::: 2.4 :::: 7.9
Tonight's run was within a longer walk with my dog, Stella. Not fast, or far but some time on my feet. We covered 5.82 miles total (run + walk) though, so that was pretty good, especially for a weeknight outing.

8/01/2017 - 0 miles
8/02/2017 - 9 miles Z3/Z4
Summer Goal: Get my marathon pace below 9 minutes.
Official Marathon PR: 4:11:28
Next Races (more as I find them):
08/05/2017 - Cranberry Cup 5k.
08/05/2017 - Howl at the Moon night race 5k
10/14/17 - Stop, Drop, and Run - Fireman style obstacle course - 5km
05/06/18 - Pittsburgh Marathon - aiming for sub four hours.
Boom. First, run of the month, and guess I might have taken it a bit harder than planned. Just as RunKeeper said "Activity Started" it started to rain, but above me was blue skies, so I figured, just run faster to limit time in the rain. By the time the first mile (which I ran at an easy pace) was gone, so was the rain so I kicked it up. Apparently, more than I thought (not shown: 768 feet of elevation):
Most of my splits were in the high 8's so might be getting there. Really want a Marathon Pace of sub 9 min/mile before I get too old to pull it off.
But at least I am finally on the charts for August!
