The weirdest tip I have, has to be a cavalcade of all those concepts that I myself think about as "that's crazy talk". The common theme is that it goes against everything we "know" about weight management, healthy eating and healthy body and mind. I guess it sums up to: Logic and reason and common sense applies to this area too.
- Don't do anything you can't see yourself doing happily forever.
- No food is healthy or unhealthy - good nutrition means getting in enough of everything every day, and not too much of anything over time. There is no perfect diet.
- No food, pill, potion, or anything else like that "burns" fat. Exercise, and just being alive, burns fat.
- There are no "fattening" foods.
- Weighing yourself daily, or weighing your food and tracking calorie intake, doesn't mean that you have an eating disorder.
- I can't control my weight, but as long as I control my food intake, I have a stable, normal, healthy weight.
- Weight management is simple, but not always easy.
- The process of weight loss has to be seen separately from the methods. The process (CICO) is universal, the methods are individual.
- I can say no to food.
- Healthy food can be delicious. I mean really delicious, not "mouthwatering lean" (which is an oxymoron).
- Cooking doesn't have to be difficult. I'm a great cook.
- To have a normal weight, I have to eat, move and think like a normal weight person.
- Follow the money. Be critical to every "tip". Don't believe everything you read.
- We can do anythong for a short while. What matters is what we can do forever.
- Don't attach morality to food. If you are overweight, you have eaten too much. That's not a moral judgement, it's stating the obvious.
- Our minds are both clever and stupid. Our brains play a lot of tricks on us, but we can find ways to "fool" ourselves in ways that enables us to improve and maintain good health.
- Work WITH your body and mind, not against them.
- Exercise burns a negligible amount of calories, but staying active regulates appetite and mood, which in turn makes sticking to appropriate calories easier.
- Motivation as it's used today, is a buzzword, you are in reality looking for someone to lose the weight for you. The reason why you want to lose weight, is your motivation.
- Weight management has nothing (or just very little) to do with willpower. Work on mindset, habits and structure instead.
- If you want to lose weight, you have to eat less. It's not that hard if you accept this and decide that you want to eat less.
- You can eat whatever you want and as much as you want, as long as that is what gets you to and keeps you at a normal weight and in good health.
- How much to eat to lose weight, IS defined, it's somewhere between maintenance calories and "too hungry, I quit". That's enough to lose weight, but you have to do that, and it's hard enough. Don't make a necessary and hard thing harder by doing unnecessary things. Don't go on a diet. Your diet is just what you eat. Decide for yourself, freely, what to eat.
- Peruse the forums, read books, watch TEDtalks, think, experiment, be open and critical. Learn, love, live.

Fresh British plums. I had 3 each the past two evenings and was lighter ever coming morning. I tell you, it works! Guaranteed!
That I'm on a mild deficit and went for a run the previous evenings has absolutely nothing to do with it. I promise.8 -
Scent.
When I feel I want treats or comfort food, I light a scented candle or put on some perfume. Apparently it's the scent I crave, not the calories.
At the moment I have some body cream that smells deliciously chocolatey. No, that doesn't make me want chocolate. It just makes me happy14 -
Don't eat breakfast until lunchtime.
Have seconds if you want them, just make yourself wait 5 minutes to double check.
Use a few extra calories to make healthy low cal stuff a yummier treat.. ie massive plate of mixed veg but roasted in olive oil and topped with a sprinkling of cheese
Exercise in the morning, it puts me in the right mindset all day.
2 days super low cal easily builds up enough extra to enjoy a night out13 -
In one recent thread someone said she loses a pound every time she farts. So that's a contender.26

Use a smaller shopping trolley so by time you get to the sweet/ biscuit/ cake isle it's almost full and you don't throw packets in just to fill it up x3

If I'm hungry and very few calories left for the day or no food at hand (think last hour at work) I have a cup of tea, that will usually do the trick until the next meal. It also rules out thirst as you can confuse this with hunger.10

If you have to reduce your portion size, also use a smaller plate. Your brain will be more happy with eating a full (small) plate of food compared to having the same amount but it only fills half the plate.8

I replaced butter/spread, mayo/salad cream and cheeses with quark and cottage cheese, my mum and my partner find this really weird and gross but I most likely wouldn't still be continuing my healthy lifestyle without those 2 items, I was a huge cheese monster before my lifestyle change, my fave food before was cheese toastie with salad cream and I would put cheese on anything I could lol, I really thought giving up cheese would be hard but its not, also I used to love crisps (potato chips) I switched those for popcorn, even making my own which helps curb cravings alot I basically look for healthier alternatives to what I crave and if I can't find it then I just suck on a polo or eat some fruit I eat an apple or 2 when my partner comes home and has his dinner, it really does help.7

I totally made up that statistic.
Weighing helped me a lot, I never thought to weigh my bananas thinking they were all about 70g, decided to weigh and I was so shocked, over 1 week 1 bag of bananas ranged from 60g to 120g It was such an eye opener, plus food scales are super cheap, I purchased one off amazon for £2 and it takes AAA batteries which are easier to get then the thin round ones. BTW still new to this so please no negative feedback, I weigh everything now, this was part of a learning curb for me11 -
My tip. If you decided to cut out sugar, don't even try to substitute it with sugar free items, like zero sugar lemonade with sucralose sweetener, or a diet coke. All these items will make you crave things several times more then usual. The same goes for all low calories savoury snacks with strong, fake (usually E additives) bbq or vinegar taste etc.
The same goes for eating like 2 squares of milk/dark chocolate per day. Who does this? I never eat 2 squares of chocolate a day without fail.. If I put my hand on it, I can't stop anymore. I have to eat it all. So it's better to not even start for me.29 -
I have 3 important ones that work for me:
1) Have a cheat meal, NOT a cheat day.
2) I promise myself a grand cheat meal if I see a new low number on the scale. It also teaches me discipline and patience.
3) I always make sure that even though it's a cheat meal, it must fit into my calorie goal for the day. I'd either eat little the entire day to make room for my cheat meal, or hit extra cardio at the gym to accommodate.
All of these work mainly because they keep me from feeling deprived of food and going on a binge! I get to eat burgers n other good stuff while still remaining under my calorie goal!
So... how is this "cheating?"

If im feeling snacky (I dont think thats a word) I have some preportioned bags of half a serving of unsalted raw almonds, and three pretzel rods. Its not many calories and I still have the salt from the pretzels and I eat it slowly so it satisfies my craving for watching TV and snacking the whole time.4

Ha! I thought I was the only one who did this. Also, hot pepper relishes (non-oil based) on sandwiches.
On a related note...my tip is that the more heavily seasoned/flavored your food, the easier it is to eat a small portion. This pretty much goes for everything, but I'm guessing that it's one of the reason that pickles and other vinegary/salty foods can be so satisfying without carrying many calories at all.5 -

I do this with my husband and occasionally my dog Things like almonds (which are safe for dogs in small quantities) Ill give her one or two and give my husband a few, I still log the original amount I weighed though to account for any other inaccuracy in my logging.5 -
If you are on a high protein diet and need 10 more calories for the day, 6 fiber capsules will get you there.6

I tend to want to eat if I'm bored. To combat this, if I start feeling a little hungry I chew a piece of minty gum. If it's boredom, the hungry goes away, if I'm "real" hungry and not "bored" hungry, it still ties me over for a while. The minty flavor and chewing gives my mouth something to do and usually helps.6

When I get a salty craving, I drink hot broth! My favourite is a Tom Yum Soup broth cube.5

I drink shots of cayenne pepper with hot lemon water. Also in the grocery store I visit Ben and Jerry but don't take them home with me.8

This is not a weight loss "tip" at all but I notice on the evenings when I allow myself an alcoholic drink (usually vodka mixed with juice) I have a loss. It dries me out. I can't do it daily or anything but once or twice a week and I definitely notice a loss.4

Also sometimes ill go grocery shopping with an exact (or almost exact) amount of money. My grocery stores website is pretty nice, you can make your list it will tell you how much everything is that day and what aisle its in. That way I cant stray from my list and buy something extra. I also only buy what I will need for the recipes im making throughout the week so its not like I can put back something and buy a cake instead.12

I watch Food Shows such as "The Best thing I Ever Ate", "Food Paradise", and "Carnival Eats". I watch these at night when I'm craving food and sweets- weird thing is that it somehow satisfies my cravings! I know it's the opposite for most people, right? These shows make you hungrier? But me.. it completely satisfies just watching these people stuff their faces with emense calories.
Those type shows don't make me hungry either. I also will watch my 600 pound life and that will make me definitely not want to eat.5 -

This. I thought I was the only one who did the food voyeur thing. Definitely strange, but I'll watch cooking shows or on Youtube, there are these things called "mukbang" where people just eat? Weirdly satisfying for me.
I also watch 600 pound life! It's so inspiring when they are able to make the changes to live a better life.2
