What's the most annoying unwarranted advice that you've ever received about your diet?
Mine was today at the gym, when I mentioned that I would like to do a body analysis at the gym before my breakfast/workout. The owner said "oh no! you should always eat a snack before working out, and never eat carbohydrates after working out".

Pretty much anything anybody says in real life, when I mention that I follow a diet and lift. About 95% of people don't have a clue as to what they're talking about!51

I've recently stopped eating meat, and I can't tell you how many times someone "suggests" I eat a steak. Oh, ha ha.47

I was told I should have 2 tbsp of black cumin oil with every meal to burn fat. That's over 700 calories a day of oil on top of everything else. Great plan!73

One day at work a colleague saw me eating a small bananna, as a late afternoon snack. It was pre logged and fitted into my daily calorie/macro allowance. This was the first time, that he had seen me eating a bananna or any afternoon snack. He said, "I thought you were meant to be on a diet", to which I replied that "I was". Before I could elaborate, he quickly butted in and said, "You'll never lose any weight, if you continue to eat banannas". Confused I asked him why, to which he replied ". You need to be careful with any fruit, but banannas are the worst. They're really unhealthy and contain nothing but sugar. It has been discovered that sugar in your diet, is the reason why people are obese. Banannas don't contain any other nutritional benefits. Eating banannas, even the odd one here or there, will prevent any weight loss"92

"You don't need to diet, just start working out more." If I had to work off the amount of food I want to eat I'd have to move into the gym. No thank you.65

That's like the people who claim coconut oil helps you lose weight.39 -
Any time someone starts off thusly "Oh, no! You should never ....." when it comes to advice about food, just close your ear flaps.35

Conversely, that you should drink ice water so your body would use more energy warming it up.32

When I'm cornered into admitting I have celiac disease and can't eat gluten, I sometimes get enthusiastic approval from people who don't believe anyone should eat gluten. Um, no, I'm really not in your camp - if I could eat gluten sourdough bread would be at the top of my list. Go away.96

In the office kitchen when I'm heating up EasyMac or 2 minute noodles: "You can't eat that, you're on a diet".
To which I reply, "I can eat whatever I want if I've got the calories".52 -

Any time someone asks, 'How are your eating habits? Do you drink protein shakes?' Then they proceed to go on about why everyone NEEDS to drink protein shakes at least one meal a day15

People always comment how I'm so small when they see me eating bread, or pastry.
They ignore it when I say I make it fit my calories.28 -
Around me just about every woman I know is on some supplement from an MLM, so anytime they see me working out or eating better it becomes a sales pitch into whatever they use/sell.
My favorite is the Advocare cleanse. I mentioned I'd rather not take anything, especially that much fiber and was told my body will never fully be able to lose since I'm flushing out the toxins with the cleanse.21 -
Was also told once that once you have extra fat cells even if you lose the fat the cells are still there waiting to blow up again....?6

Last week I was telling some friends at the gym about an awesome new pizza place I went to over the weekend. They both immediately started lecturing me about how I'd never lose weight if I kept eating all those carbs and how wrong it is to eat carbs in general.
They've literally watched me lose 33lbs in the last 7 months eating a lot of carbs. I don't get it. The evidence is right in front of them and they still want to judge me. I'v never commented on how or what they chose to eat.50 -
I love my boyfriend to death but he is constantly trying to get me to go on a low carb diet. He thinks It's the "best way to lose weight". I constantly tell him it's not for me, you need some carbs to feel energized, and you need it even more when you work a physical job (which I do; he works a desk job). Its so annoying, just let me do my thing and count my calories!31

I didn't even see your post and I posted about the same thing about these low carb fanatics. Yes I get the science behind it but I'm also losing weight by just counting my calories and eating in moderation! Geez people.10 -
Multiple variations on the theme of friends who have not lost weight (but want to and would be healthier if they did) telling me I can't lose weight unless I do X . . . where X is something I have not done throughout losing 50+ pounds down to a healthy weight.
The usual X is "go low carb". Funniest was the (overweight) friend who got quite indignant when I said low carb wasn't required. She said she had "read all the books over the winter and they all said you have to go low carb." She was completely unfazed by the visibly obvious fact that what I had done all winter (plus summer/fall) was lose around 1/3 of my body weight while still eating carbs!42 -

Sadly, this is true. The fat cells empty out their little store of fat as we lose, but the cells are still there . . . waiting. If we don't overeat our maintenance calories, that's all they do. (I'm in year 2 of maintenance).46 -
When ppl assume I'm saying my way is the only way when someone asks "What has worked for you."
I find myself having to clarify in a snarky tone for the safe space babies that no, my way isn't the only way but if nothing else is working for them, why shouldn't they know about what has finally worked for me? I WISH someone had done the same for me several years back. If I try it, and it don't work for me, fine. Thanks for suggesting it! At least you cared! I think lots of people have amazing methods they fear sharing because of those who become defensive over it.23
