12/09 - (HM) Fa La La Half Marathon
Made it the 7 miles, and ran the first 6 pretty hard on a flavor of the course for my 10k next week. Sure glad I did because the gradual, longer incline was definitely some work. I should be able to beat my first 10k time, and I am hoping to beat the course average as a stretch goal. That hill and the weather will play into how fast I can go. There were some ugly headwinds today that I hope I don't have to face next Sunday.

re: Metric vs. US measurements . . .
Runners in the US are halfway converted to metric. We have the 5K and 10K. I see more 15K races than 10 mile. Track races are mostly in meters; the mile is a rare exception, which could easily be phased out in favor of 1600m.
And as runners, we learn to convert standard distances of miles and kilometers to each other. That came home to me last Tuesday. I had bought a new Honda Fit, and drove it to club practice. On the way home, I went slightly out of my way to get a stretch of highway driving. Wanted to drive 65 mph, but horrors! The top of the steering wheel blocked my view of the top of the speedometer, and I couldn't see precisely how fast I was driving!
But in the US, cars have a smaller print version of kph inside the larger print mph. I could see the kph numbers. I know that 100 kph is 62 mph, so 65 mph is just a bit past the 100 kph mark. Problem solved.
Got home, dug out the owners manual, and found the lever to adjust the steering wheel that I couldn't locate while I was moving. Don't have the visibility problem now, and I probably won't adjust the steering wheel again for as long as I own this car.2 -
@MNLittleFinn Good going!
@amymoreorless The first time you run it, it's hard. Then you run the 20, and that feels hard while the 18 feels not so hard. And then you run another 20, and the 18 feels a little less hard than before while the 20 still probably feels hard. Rinse, lather, repeat, and add in the fact that you tend to run these long runs on tired legs, you'll actually be in good shape for the marathon where you'll be fully fueled and properly rested, and miles 24-26 will feel like how mile 18 did today. You'll do just fine.6 -

Nominal challenge goal: 100 miles
Real goals: Get healthy enough to run 5 days a week. Avoid re-injury. Build base.
Today's notes – This morning it felt like autumn. My porch thermometer said 43º F (6º C). The forecast called for it to be a few degrees warmer at run time, but still cool enough that I wanted a long sleeve shirt and light gloves. Upon consideration, I layered a short sleeve shirt over the long sleeve. That was partly because the short sleeve shirt is the current session's pacer shirt.
Got to Ontario Beach, and my car said it was 54º F (12º C) out. It felt cooler than that. Garmin says it was 46º F (8º C) when we started running at 7:30 AM. That sounds more like what it felt like. The assignment was 6 +3 = 9 miles. Nominally, I was the 8:00 pacer; but the 8:30 pacer and the normal sub were both out of town for the Marine Corps Marathon, so I held up both signs. Got one pacee; Ravi requested an 8 pace because he felt cold. There were no 7:30 runners, so the regular 7:30 pacer ran the first 6 miles with us before leaving to go find some trails.
It was a beautiful day. After a mile or so moving, I was nice and comfortable. The designated selfie location for today's run was the end of the pier at the mouth of the Genesee River. I tried to get a piece of the lighthouse in the background and failed; but at least you can see that we're on the lake:
After getting back to base at about 9.3 miles, I felt like I wanted 10 to 12 miles. So I set out to run them solo. On the way up the trail by the river, I took time for one shot of what I had to my left:
I felt pretty good till past 11 miles; then I began to experience some intestinal distress. In 20-20 hindsight, I realized I had disrupted my normal food intake pattern yesterday. Oops. Ran back to get to the port-a-pot. It was out of toilet paper. There were leaves available. Anything more is likely TMI.
So I ended up running 11.54 miles at an average pace of 8:05 per mile. Totally moving mile splits while pacing ranged from 7:53 to 8:12, not bad for an 8:00 target; but I really should have worked harder to slow Ravi down. I would say that my fastest pace was from letting Ravi push me, but I did run faster than that in the classic port-a-pot dash for the last half mile or so.

Sore, heavy legs this morning... I baked cupcakes and cleaned the house before heading out. It was hot and I was really slow. I almost cut it short but persevered. We ran a bunch of errands afterwards.
Tomorrow we have a very busy day - church, my husband’s work party/BBQ, and we are celebrating my youngest’s birthday with a party at our house. Expecting 30 guests. Is it bad that I wish it were over already?
In light of how busy life has been coupled with peak mileage, I’m thinking of having a rest week in the middle of my training- is that a thing? Would it set me back too much? I was thinking I’d just run every other day and keep it low - 3-5 miles and maybe a lot of walking.4 -

@zdyb23456 If you're following a training plan then it should include cutback weeks for recovery. If not, then a cutback week is not only advisable, but necessary...you need to give your body a chance to recover or you run the risk of injury or over-training. A typical cutback week doesn't mean putting your feet up (I mean, I guess you could!), but rather running with the same intensity but at a lower mileage. During my training, I would take a cutback week every fourth week, and would typically reduce my mileage down to about 60-70% of my regular running weeks.4

10/1 - Rest
10/2 - Rest
10/3 - 5 miles treadmill before weight lifting
10/4 - 8.15 miles
10/5 - 5 miles treadmill. Worst workout ever with serious BG problems. So bad that I skipped weight lifting afterwards.
10/6 - Rest
10/7 - 1.4 miles. Was supposed to be 12 miles, but it was raining and I had some GI issues. Ugh.
10/8 - 4.72 miles. Was harder than it should have been.
10/9 - Rest
10/10 - Figured out why I've been having GI/stomach issues/pain and difficulty breathing. Gall stones. Skipped run to try to flush gall stones.
10/11 - 5.04 miles - was supposed to be race pace. Some gall stones were flushed, but still having abdomen issues. Still, this went pretty well and was almost to race pace. Going to do the home flush again on 10/13 to get rid of any remaining gall stones.
10/12 - 5.53 miles. Went well, but will still do another gall bladder flush.
10/13 - Rest / 2nd gall bladder flush
10/14 - Rest
10/15 - 12 miles
10/16 - Rest
10/17 - 5.58 miles
10/18 - 4.60 miles
10/19 - 5.1 miles
10/20 - Rest
10/21 - 26.2 Oregon Trail Run marathon (Failed to make goal by a huge amount… very disappointed)
Upcoming Races:
10/21/17 - Oregon Trail Run marathon (First marathon... goal 4:10) - Actual... somewhere just beyond 6 hrs.
Marathon race report:
Started out a bit fast, but not terrible. It was very windy, crosswinds at first, then headwinds.
Between mile 1 and mile 2, I noticed my BG plummeting. This is what I try to avoid. Whenever that happens, the rest of the run just does not go very well at all. Had 2 glucose tablets.
Mile 2 aid station, I stopped and CGM showed 50 mg/dl. A little bit low… not much, but just enough to cause problems. Ate half of a banana
Mile 4 aid station… BG still in 50's mg/dl. Ate oranges slices. Was already 10 min. behind goal time.
For the next several miles, BG began to rise… got to 60's and then 70's. Changed to headwind for the remainder of the race.
Mile 8 aid station, BG had gotten to 70's, but my pace had already slowed considerably and I was walking way more than I wanted.
By mile 10, BG had risen and was starting to go high. I was so far behind time and just couldn't keep running.
Walked more of the 2nd half than I ran.
Total time was about 6 hours… it is my fastest marathon and my slowest marathon. I have much room for improvement. I know a goal of 4:10 was a stretch, but not that much if conditions had been different.
Short story: BG issues and wind really slowed me down a whole lot. One of my worst runs ever... and when I have these types of training runs, they are generally 3-5 miles. In my longest training run, 20 miles, I had a similar issue at around mile 13-14 and pace slowed after that... but to have this problem at the beginning and pace slowing afterwards is depressing.10 -
@midwesterner85 sorry the race didn’t go as planned. You are still an inspiration- I can’t even imagine attempting a marathon.2
-
My right Achilles heel was aching a little bit when I ran 10 km yesterday, and today on a 9 km walk I felt a few twinges.
I've never had any Achilles problems before, and I hope I never do, so I'm going to do nothing (eek) tomorrow, then test it with a walk on Tuesday.
I was looking forward to some easy short runs this week after last Sunday's HM run event, but I need to be tapering a bit before my 35 km walk in 2 weeks.
I like having this thread - it helps me think things through.5 -
@midwesterner85 Bravo on completing your first marathon!
Sorry it was such a difficult run.
You did great to manage your blood glucose and keep going till the end. Fantastic.2 -
@midwesterner85 Ah man, sorry you had sugar issues. But congrats on your first marathon! You now have a time to beat2
-
Congratulations @midwesterner85 ! Sorry it didn't go as anticipated.2
-
@midwesterner85 you are officially a marathon runner, congrats on that it's a HUGE accomplishment. Like others I' really sorry the race didn't go as you expected. You'll get it next time.4
-
@midwesterner85 Congrats on completing your first marathon. Sorry to hear that it didn't go as expected, but you completed it and that's a major achievement, even more so given the challenges you were faced with.
Another recovery run, but this time for the Stand Up And Run virtual race (although I couldn't actually race; I'm still doing recovery runs). So it was pretty slow, but I did get to play with my new watch. Verdict on the watch: I love it already.

@PastorVincent - isn’t the steering wheel adjustment pretty much the same on all cars? (ie. a lever just below the shaft)? I have a Fit (Jazz we call it) and think it’s the same. Having said that, I don’t recommend steering wheel adjustment in a moving vehicle....
Here’s a quirk with measurements. Mazda have their own very special calculations for fuel usage. They give a figure for Miles per 100 Litres. So that’s a Japanese manufacturer, for the European (probably same in the US) market, trying to do what exactly?!!!!1 -
@midwesterner85 so sorry you had BG issues but you made it!!! Well done.0
-
@midwesterner85 So sorry that you had issues with your blood sugar during your marathon. Much respect to you for persevering and finishing. A lot of people would have thrown in the towel. I hope your next attempt goes more smoothly.1

Pretty sure you meant @MobyCarpgirlinahat wrote: »Here’s a quirk with measurements. Mazda have their own very special calculations for fuel usage. They give a figure for Miles per 100 Litres. Errr... that seems odd... In the USA Market, they would be required to report the EPA measurements which are in MPG, so no idea why in your market they pick 100 liters. May they think that the bigger numbers will look more impressive and sell cars?

I do not recall... what did you have before it? How does it compare?

YOU FINISHED ONE HUNDRED FLIPPING K! YOUSA ROCKSTAR!3 -
I'm lagging behind this month from being ill to having hurt the ball of my foot at yesterday's 5k park run I only managed a 2k this morning at the great local run instead of my usual 5k. So to date I've only Run 32 km and Walk 38.50 km. "Brian" struck last night in the UK so the course this morning was partly flooded and yesterday's run was completely muddy as it's cross-country and I think I may have hurt my foot when I went over a particularly slippery area.3
