@midwesterner85 I come from a family of Type 1's. Every diabetic I know, both within my family and outside, deals with it in a different way. One cousin clearly lets her diabetes be the controller of her life, her brother is quite the opposite. The rest of the family have beaten the suggested life expectancy by twenty to thirty YEARS. I have friends who have been cleared to scuba dive for being T1, and know others who are T1 runners. Aside from that one cousin, NONE of those I see around me are beaten by it, and you have shown an amazing ability to both manage the condition and work around it to let yourself live the life YOU want to live.
There's no shame in having vulnerability. I found myself crying on a hilltop in front of a group of strangers last weekend, feeling hopeless that I couldn't keep up with them. We all have our weaknesses. Yours is a little harder to overcome than perhaps the rest of ours, but you do so well at it.6 -
@_nikkiwolf_ Great race report; may you long continue to have crappy weather!
@ACJones82 I found running unfueled to be a great way to help condition the body to become more efficient with fuel resources by forcing it to utilize fat more while running. This in theory should pay dividends later on by helping to avoid hitting the dreaded wall.
ETA: Just re-read what you wrote, and you said without water. Ah well, I still stand by what I wrote, lol.
@MNLittleFinn Great race report, and dang that was a tough race; much kudos and respect to you for seeing it through to the end!
@midwesterner85 Vulnerability? Yes. Inferiority? Definitely not a word to use to describe you...you've got more grit, strength, and courage to go for, and complete, a marathon than most runners I've come across. Probably a more fitting word would be 'invincibility', because you didn't let it stop you.
After yesterday's five-miler, the recovery plan called for another run, but with this one being an even shorter four-miler instead. Nothing special to report, other than it was a beautiful sunny day with a nice cool breeze from the north helping to keep things feeling fresh and comfortable.

Today's run was awesome! It was my longest run to date. I forgot my water heading out and ended up doing the whole run without any water. Thank goodness it was only in the 60's this morning. There were a couple of spots on the route where I could have veered off and swung by the house if I needed to, but I was fine without it.
I played Zombies Run today. I always get tickled when I'm running through the cemetery and the zombie chase starts. I always seem to get at least one chase when I am either in the cemetery, or running on the road outside of it.
I tripped a little on something sticking out of the ground, but I managed to catch myself and not fall. I definitely looked around to make sure no one saw me flailing my arms and trying catch my balance. I'm sure I looked quite comical. I'm just glad I didn't hit the ground.
I only ran 8 miles and I am pretty tired. Congrats to all of you who ran marathons and ultra and even just long runs training for marathons. I don't know how you do it. I think I will spend the rest of the evening on the couch waiting for the premier of The Walking Dead.

Nominal challenge goal: 100 miles
Real goals: Get healthy enough to run 5 days a week. Avoid re-injury. Build base.
Today's notes – After a tough week on the non-running front, I slept in this morning. I let myself go through a normal morning routine, just later than usual. Got out to run before lunch, at 1:23 PM.
Getting 10 hours of sleep last night was a Very Good Thing.
I had hazy sunshine and 72º F (22º C) to run. Ran a familiar 7.2 mile route with some hills, mostly paying attention to pace, heart rate, and how my recovering ankle felt. Paying attention to HR led to paying attention to weather; it felt hot running eastbound with the breeze at my back. But what with one thing and another, I was able to hold my pace to mostly easy effort, 7:53 per mile average with full mile splits ranging from 7:45 to 8:04. Then at the very end I ramped it up to T level of effort for one interval between fire hydrants, then finished with a stride. So Garmin reports the pace for the tag end after 7 miles as 6:20 per mile; that's about how hard I ran, on average.
Bottom line is, I'm maybe 90% to 95%. Still have to pay attention to the ankle. Still not all the way back with cardio, though I'm close. But I know how to train/recover from this point. I'm very comfortable with having a 6K XC race next Sunday, and I'm pretty comfortable with my decision to have 2 rest days per week.
Late month goal check: Hit the nominal mileage goal today. I'm healthy enough to run 5 days a week. So far I haven't re-injured myself. I'm satisfied with my base building so far, having run 36 miles a week two weeks in a row.

midwesterner85 wrote: »Thank you all for the encouraging words. The most depressing part is that I really try not to let T1D affect my success or lack thereof in life. So when I have bad days at the worst time, it is doubly bad. In all reality, it would be easier to accept my terrible time if it were caused by anything else at all - getting struck by lightning, for example. It isn't just the terrible time... it is that the results are undeniable evidence of vulnerability and inferiority that I would like to believe do not even exist. I want to continue to think that I can do just as well at anything as anybody else, but I just can't continue to believe that anymore. That's the depressing part... to have to accept having a weakness.
As someone that has multiple health conditions, I can really understand what you mean. I have gone out with great weather, well stocked with supplies, and time to run 20+ miles and been forced to quit at 6 or 9 or something miles for various health reasons. Straight up, it sucks.
But despite all that you still did what the vast majority of the world could never do. You completed a marathon. Dude, you realize you are in an elite class of human now? Seriously. There will be other chances to get a better time, but for no hold onto your medal and know you have overcome a beast that the vast majority of the world would never even consider fighting. And you essentially did it with one hand tied behind your back.
Seriously. Congrats again and welcome to the marathoner's club.

Back from vacation! My run on the 10th was too long; I should not have ignored the stiff feeling towards the outside of my arch. It bothered me the first day or two of vacation, despite a week of rest in between. (We walked ~10 miles a day on vacation.) So when it came back today, I called it good and walked the rest.
Concussed teenager is no longer bothered by riding in the car, but discovered to her dismay that "the doctor cleared you to ride roller coasters as tolerated" is not the same as "you'll tolerate riding." Anything with lights, sounds, or motion was too much. But it was still better than staying home! And she was fine with the airplane travel, which is good, because she loves flying.2 -

@MNLittleFinn congratulations! What an awesome accomplishment!
I was mia this past week due to yet another insane week at work with an added benefit of being sick like a dog for most of the days. I did not run all week in order to recover for today's race, which sucked real bad because the weather was gorgeous! Oh well, I guess it was worth it since I ran my half marathon today and it went fantastic!
Quick report: this was my first time running Blue-Gray 1/2 marathon in Gettysburg, and I've already decided - my favorite race so far. Here are the pros:
1) It's 3 miles away from my house
2) Registration fee was very reasonable - just around $60. I am getting tired of paying $100+ for races, maybe it's just me.
3) Participant cap = 1000. I've ran big races before like Baltimore Marathon and Washington DC races, and there is just something very special about small town events that I absolutely love!
4) Check in was in a movie theater, so there were plenty of bathrooms to use (real bathrooms!) before the race began.
5) The course was awesome! Very gentle rolling hills, beautiful sites of the countryside, stunning views of the historic battlefield! To be honest, this might have been the easiest race I've ran as far as elevation goes. Great potential for a new PR. The weather conditions were amazing today, I could not have asked for a better weather - around 52 degrees, sunny and chilly, low humidity.
6) Post-race food: bananas, apples, bagels, donuts, real sandwiches, chips, pretzels, chocolate milk, water and gatorade - all you can eat! Honestly, just come and get as much as you want - the station were open for anyone. Oh, did I forget beer? Yeah, 2 cans of Michelob Ultra There was so much food and music and dogs - this is what heaven looks like to me!
7) After the race runners could go to a computer station, type in their BIB and get a printed copy of their official result, with overall and age group ranks.
8) The age group winners got locally baked pies as their prize, which I though was a nice touch.
9) The pictures of all finishers are already uploaded and free.
Cons: can't think of one
Overall, great race! I would definitely recommend this event to anyone.
Of course, my favorite part of the race - hugging my little runner at the finish line!
P.S. I finished with 1:58:30. Not a PR, but anything under 2 hours is good for me!

PastorVincent wrote: »Bah. Planed a long run for today, but got stuck at a store for several hours waiting on various things and lost my chance.
BTW - This is why I try to run 7 days a week because I KNOW that there will be days I can not. If I only planned to run a few days a week, and life happens so that I miss one or more of those few days, then I get NO runs in that week. By getting up every day and trying t plan a run, I can almost always get at least 3 or 4 runs in a week in. Sometimes I end up on a 7+ day streak, but I can always choose to take a rest day when that happens.
Anyways... that is just how I do it. YMMV and all that. But it is something to consider for those of you like me with many random things drawing your time away from you.

What I live about this thread the most is the vulnerabilies. It's one thing to share the joy of our wins and NSVs and such...but it's just as important to read and share our stories of disappointment. Otherwise, we start to perceive our Internet lives as separate and perfect.14

@_nikkiwolf_ I love your attitude! Going the extra 7 km in the rain! Just awesome.
@Runningmischka That sounds like the perfect event! Very happy for you.
@juliet3455 So sorry about your back injury! One of the downsides/upsides to running is that it teaches us patience.
@midwesterner85 There's accepting a weakness, and there's doing amazing things despite a weakness. Massive kudos on the latter.

Hi everyone,
I was gone for a while (vacation and did a ton of walking while planning and planting some geocaches and planning a Fun Run (which was a bit of a dud ) . I did do my first 5K in almost a year though and did a decent job. It was a hilly golf course route and a small race, but I managed to finish as the 1 st Master's woman. My 8 yro son has been tearing it up though --he finished almost 2 min ahead of me and 11th overall in the race! Back home and trying to get back to my normal routine this week, but feeling behind in my work and my running both.

I have a very similar idea of planning my runs. Most days I assume I will be running, unless my schedule is completely packed and I know for sure a run won't happen. So at the beginning of October I ran 8 days in a row, which was needed, because then I had a 5 days non-running streak. I completely understand your frustration when a run does not happen due to some random things.0 -

@hjeppley NIce work on your 5k. My seven year old wants to train for one but we need to wait until soccer season ends.

Today's notes: Good morning Run friends! Well, my quads don't kill as much today, so that's an improvement. My calves are another story. Very top of my calves, almost to my knee, is very tight/stiff and sore today. That's the nice thing about an ultra, it really tells you where your weak areas are.
Have a Runderful day everyone!
