I like kale too! I liked a 'messaged' kale and cranberry raw salad, and I also like it cooked with shallots and balsamic vinegar.
This is my favorite recipe for raw and I just wing it on the cooked: https://www.gimmesomeoven.com/kale-salad-warm-cranberry-vinaigrette-recipe/1 -

I like kale. I'll eat it for the rest of you.
Kale chips taste fine ;-)
And wasn't I the one a while back, @GottaBurnEmAll, who was arguing that your bod is great looking and you don't *need* to lose any fat (sadly, without benefits of calipers or special pics, and just on the basis of a tiny avatar viewed on a phone)!
I now return you to regular programming!
I've referred page 164's hyperpalatable food post to at least one MFPeop! Thanks @anubis609 :-)
Thanks. I weigh 5 pounds more now than I do in my profile picture, but I look around the same thanks to recomp. My thighs are slightly thicker than they are in this pic, but not by much. I'd be happier at the weight I was in this picture. If I get there, I get there. If I don't, I don't.
It was a desperate attempt to lose 5 pounds more than my profile picture that started me on the path to crazy town. I've learned a lot more since then about the long haul.
I'll take new pics at some point when we have a sunny day and share them with you on our challenge.
BTW, my calipers put me at 21%, and that's with testing multiple times and multiple points. LOL. No. Tape measure puts me at 23%. Still, LOL. No. I have fat in places those things don't measure. (And not my breasts, those are mostly tissue at this point, I mean my saddle bags.)2 -
Expectedly, I figured there might be some kale lovers. Without adding ingredients, additional flavor, or changing its texture via cooking, could you eat it alone and say you love it? If so, bless you because you're on your own. I can't help you. I'll be at the carving station
Also, this may be the most appropriate new year post I've read so far. Spread it like a virus. I've also learned a new word for the year: fktrumpet. Never stop learning.

I don't understand kale. Of all the delicious vegetables available why would anyone choose it? It's just so, nothing.
I'm still dropping water, given I'm pretty sure i was close to maintenance last week I certainly haven't dropped fat yet this year. My damn body and its weird clingy relationship with water. 6lbs off since new year but it has taken until today to get that far!4 -
Chard, anyone?

I, sir, cook kale the same way every self-respecting Italian cooks any green: I saute it in olive oil and garlic, and since kale is tough, I add a bit of bit of broth pop on a lid and let it braise until it's tender. I then finish it off with red pepper flakes and lemon juice.
That was a great read, btw. Thanks for sharing it. A lot of it was the distillation of what I've learned the hard way over 40 years of trying to deal with my weight. It's good to know I'm on the right track.7 -

Of course you do! Is there any other way!1 -

I don't think I'd know any other way to cook greens, tbh.2 -

I did specify kale chips, right? You know boiled in hot oil sprinkled with Oodles of salt.... great along M&M fun packs to reference a contemporary thread8
-
I'm a savoy cabbage scoffer
finely shredded (chiffonade), steamed, tossed in melted butter, seasoned liberally with Himalyan rock salt and ground black pepper
serve as a replacement for things like rice, eats great with one pot stews (curries, chilli, goulash etc)
kale is feed for cattle bleurrgggh2 -
My husband eats kale chips - I even tried one. Nope! However, I've been hanging on to a recipe for kale sautéed with bacon that I'm now motivated to try.
I'm solidly at my pre-diet break weight, and thanks to all you lovely people and your superior information, I now have confidence (for the first time in my life!) that I can not only lose weight (I'm very good at that - lots of practice ), but that I can maintain the loss. I'm no longer feeling that I need to keep losing just one more lb. in case I happen to go a lb. or two above the perfect weight I have in my head, to the point where I finally snap and lose all control. This is an amazing feeling - freeing, and empowering.
My goal for this year is recomp. I'm getting a Dexa scan in a couple of weeks to give me a starting point, and right now I don't have a specific body fat goal, since I've never done this before. I'd love to get rid of my spare tire, but at my age (67) that may not be in the cards, and that's OK. My main goal is to stay healthy and active past the century mark. My Aria scale gives me 21.1% body fat, but since I have muscular legs, and most of the fat is around my middle, I'm guessing that's way off.
Anyway, I'm writing all this out because I find it's harder to back out of a commitment after I've announced it to the world, so Hi World!9 -
Can confirm from my pre-vegetarian days: kale with bacon is very good. Bacon is generally good with any bitter vegetable. I used to make pan braised brussels sprouts with bacon and garlic that was to die for.7

Hmm, I really don't like brussels sprouts but assuming the kale experiment goes well, I'll give that a try! I'm really trying to expand my somewhat limited vegetable menu.0 -

Roasted brussels sprouts are delicious -- I've never had them with bacon, but I suspect that bacon would only improve on the deliciousness.3 -
Savoy cabbage yes. Any cabbage really. I had white, shredded, boiled till just, tossed in butter, nom.
And yes, sprouts with bacon are really good. Or if you're fancy like me diced pancetta. But I love brussels sprouts. Have some in the fridge right now!2 -

Another vote for wilted kale. My quick breakfast at home - chop some slices of bacon. Cook bacon in a cast iron skillet - wilt some kale in the bacon fat. Fry two eggs sunnyside up. Toss everything in a bowl - season to taste - add some salsa. Takes less than 10 minutes.2 -
I'll vouch for roasted Brussels, and roasted wedges of cabbage.... Delish!
Waaa.... I'm another struggling getting my head back in to deficit (where is the person who wanted to see how I'd respond to it again after a 3 month diet break?!? I'd like her to appear please). Being at home alone on holidays isn't helping.... I get bored pottering around on my own! Nothing I eat seems to satisfy me, I eat a filling meal, but still want something else
I think I'm partly frustrated at not getting answers to my issues and thinking that being in a deficit isn't what is best for me.... I would really like to sort out the hormonal issues (having some hormones would be nice), but Dr is more focused on the blood issues that have appeared, but have now been told that they apparently aren't bad enough to see a specialist. I hate "blaming" hormonal issues for body issues, but I feel like training is somewhat pointless and I'm not going to successfully gain/recomp/achieve my goals with my levels completely out of whack.
Enough woe is me.
Nony_Mouse - sending healthy vibes and best wishes to you and kitty. I hope you get good news, answers, and solutions!8 -
Man you lot have been chatty today!
So much for my wishful thinking of 'the meds caused it all' . Still no diagnosis, today's ultrasound showed exactly the same as last week's, and I think the internal med specialist (who is lovely) really does think it's probably lymphoma. He does agree with me that the thyroid meds definitely made him worse, and it may be that they were a blessing in disguise, because it's possible it was only them causing his inappetence and therefore weight loss, and we may not have picked up on the other stuff for who knows how long if that hadn't happened.
It does seem that he probably has some renal failure, it's not uncommon for thyroid treatment to reveal that, because elevated thyroid levels disguise it.
Hematology all looked normal I believe, still waiting on his other blood results. Matt will call me with those tomorrow morning.
So tomorrow is exploratory surgery day for my boy. Big op, and they will take a lot of biopsy samples. He'll stay in hospital tomorrow night as well, but I can hopefully pick him up on Saturday morning. Biopsy results won't be back until mid next week, but they may have more of an idea of if it's lymphoma following surgery anyway.
They'll also come up with a plan for radio-iodine treatment for his hyperthyroid (which was always the plan to do eventually), taking into account his 'grey area' status with that (a smaller dose can be given than what would be given to a cat with a higher level).
Boy exploring his hospital room when I went to visit before heading home this evening. He has hissed at his cage neighbour to let them know who's boss.
I'm tired after a river walk with a friend who works in the same town as the vet school at lunch time, and endless wandering around the mall in the afternoon to kill time. The desire to just get drunk is quite strong tonight (and god knows I have the cals for it), but that waits for definitive diagnosis. It's a thing.

I found a tracker app that I think may be more helpful than MFP. MFP is good for food logging, but it doesn't exactly praise hitting targets -- so I think a separate habit tracker would be helpful for that, and help with the *consistency* problem. Because I know if I could eat at a certain TDEE-deficit target regularly, that would help stop the binge cycles. And should keep things lower overall, since I won't have the binges interfering. The irony, being, that even on binge days, I was really just eating at maintenance.
So I'll still log food here, and still use the forums, but will use the other app for keeping an eye on whether I'm hitting that target, and not slipping in other behaviors.
Also got a 5-mile run in today. I haven't run that far since the stress fracture, and I also did it in my fastest time ever, so it was good to see that that's still there.
Hi @collectingblues just out of curiosity what's this new habit tracker?
I'm using HabitBull. Admittedly, only two days in, but so far, I like it -- it is completely customizeable, and although you only get five habits with the free version, that's good enough for what I need.collectingblues wrote: »collectingblues wrote: »Today was a little better.

Thanks! I'm intrigued and will have a look. I've been more or less back to it since the New Year but also experiencing some of what others have said about having greater difficulty with compliance, so another, longer term way of looking at things might help. I also wonder if any of it is to do with the weather and the short days? Are any of you all for whom it's currently summer having difficulty staying in calorie range, staying focused, etc.?1 -

Yup.... I'm a southern hemisphere-er! Summer for me - I don't cope well with the heat, so most days getting out during the day is not really possible without melting or burning to a crisp! I think that partly contributes to my boredom and sloth like tendencies - I do make myself walk/run 2kms to the supermarket as many mornings as possible to buy something random.1 -
I'm sorry it's not better news @Nony_Mouse but at least there is progress. Plus, he doesn't look terribly upset about being in hospital! Leaving them behind though is so hard.2

Hi, late to the party, but wanted to start by thanking @Nony_Mouse for starting this thread! Watched the vid, learned a lot, and am really excited to have a plan to tackle the last 7kg of body fat to get me where I want to be.
I do have one practical question though (if this was answered before, feel free to copy/paste): how do you go about setting your calorie goal here on MFP for this approach (assuming you, like me, are not paying for premium)? Do you set it for your deficit days and blow into the red on refeed days or the other way around?0 -
Big hugs and fingers crossed @Nony_Mouse !2

I have my calories set to sedentary maintenance and add exercise on top of that (well, Fitbit does). If I'm eating at deficit, I just leave those calories on the table for the amount of deficit I want to create. If I'm eating at maintenance, I eat all the calories.
I have Fitbit set to maintenance as well.2 -

He's the one I can leave without worrying that he will stress. He's so laid back, and such a charmer, he'll be getting loads of interaction I'm sure. And yes, we are making progress. Matt will be phoning this morning with his blood test results, and then Kat (surgeon) will call this afternoon. And Jenna (his 5th year student vet) just called now to let me know he did really well overnight.
I pointed out to him last night when I visited that he's no longer doing a very good job of acting sick (and this is why I think the Vidalta reaction has allowed us to uncover something he's not even symptomatic of yet).
Will be interested to hear what his renal results are now. They've been all over the show between in house and lab diagnostics, and different things involved each time. Dehydration can very easily throw off (elevate) renal values, but untreated hyperthyroid (even at a low and stable level) can cause and mask deteriorating kidneys (I wasn't aware the hyper-t could be causing damage at the low and asymptomatic level his is ). So the brief thyroid treatment may have uncovered that). I think he was probably pretty well hydrated for yesterday's tests, because there's no way he gained nearly 400g in a week without some of that being fluid (yes, I crunched the numbers, at best my food pushing would have gotten him up 120-130g). I may ask Matt if they can run those tests again, because gold standard is to have two sets on a well-hydrated cat to be sure of a CRF diagnosis.4 -

I originally switched between having MFP set to deficit weekdays and maintenance weekends, but pretty soon got sick of that (because you have to reset you macros each time as well b/c MFP puts them back to default), so then just set to sedentary maintenance same as @GottaBurnEmAll.
Are you doing, or have you done, a diet break first? That would be my recommendation before instituting refeeds. You want to bring your hormone levels back up, then use the refeeds to not let them drop as low again as they would in a straight deficit.2 -
I aim to maintenance on Fridays and Saturdays while aiming for deficit all other days in deficit mode. (my other half works away in the week and we arise early on Mondays to get him to the train, so Sunday is also deficit / no booze night). Mostly I'm at maintenance those two days due to booze consumption over and above norms, plus Saturday night is a roast dinner ritual, which is coming down to a calorie counted fine art and nearing maintenance. I diet a bit harder on deficit days to compensate.
I just ignore the red numbers on Fridays and Saturdays. It's not nagging if you actively know your goals are different4 -
Morning Mario update: I've had calls from both his student vet, to let me know he did well overnight, and his internal med specialist with blood results.
T4 is up a bit, so his hyperthyroid is (finally) on the upwards march. He will get radio-iodine treatment possibly as early as mid-Feb, but it will depend on how he is doing and how well he will cope (eat) in isolation.
SDMA is back in normal range - yay!! (this means unlikely he is in early renal failure)
Urea is up a bit more again, and specific gravity is showing inadequate concentration. Lots of things could be causing these, and he will either get a retest this afternoon because he will be well hydrated from his drip during op, and/or at two week follow up when he gets his stitches out.
Lymphoma does look like the most likely candidate given the intestinal wall thickening, not showing any physical signs of IBD, and other possible causes are less common. Can't be ruled out yet, but less likely.
Everyone loves him, so he is getting lots of cuddles and pats
Next update this afternoon when the surgeon rings.
(sorry, I know the lab stuff is probably Double Dutch to most, copy pasta from my FB update, where I have a network of crazy cat people friends)9
