I think I am finally caught up really all the way! Whoo! Being busy at work is really hurting my MFP running challenge reading. This is rough. LOL. Work has been really busy. Awesome day so far though. Last night, I actually slept all night without being in pain and so far today, I am pain free!!! It has been a month since I have been able to say that. I really want to run. Dr says it's ok, just wants me to do a big warm-up routine beforehand. I'm still a little nervous, but I think my need to run is taking over the feeling of nervousness. I just know that if I am hurting after, I am really going to suffer tomorrow as I have to take the boys to the zoo. ACK!!
AND!!! I am going to miss my triathlon training bike ride tomorrow! Because of the zoo. Boo. LOL. I thought it was Sunday and then looked at the calendar and it overlapped. What was I thinking?? So, I am going to try a quick, short run tonight, zoo tomorrow and ride on Sunday. ooohhhh, AND, I got all my new swim stuff in today. Box is waiting at home. Next week, I will start swimming laps.
Hope everyone has a great weekend. Probably will have to try and catch up on Monday.
@JessicaMcB See, you really are Wonder Woman. You lost weight, found an exercise that you love dearly and you inspire a large group of us to challenge and better ourselves. Seeing you were like the rest of us is truly inspiring! I would love to meet you in person, because I know you have an amazing spirit and heart!!!4 -
@seanevan10 I'll be in Dallas Monday. Can I come swim with you??? Haha! I have all my stuff ready.
I want to run today after being in less pain... I haven't decided what to do. I really enjoy not hurting and am sure if I go run I'll be achy sore again. But really wanna go run. I'm afraid if I wait until tomorrow to go, I'll go after 6 miles. Maybe I should start with 2 today? LOL! And do 6 tomorrow? And ride Sunday? Then run again Monday morning? Hahaha!1 -
So, I am officially on the board for my goal-less November! 2 miles, but I'm on the board. I was realizing between weather, schedule, and general laziness and excuses, I had not ran in the 2 weeks since my last PT appointment. So, I broke 2/3 rules (treadmill, and no ankle brace on) PT had given me, to get a run in. I seriously considered breaking the 3rd one (distance) but thought that may be tempting fate a bit much. So I stopped at 1mile running, 1.5 distance travelled. Then PT had me do another .5 this morning.
If this Luddite can get this to work, below is an example of how Ive been keep myself sane sans running. Totally not running, but I'm proud of it. And since I have no running awesomeness to brag about....
Trainer has also been programming some non running cardio conditioning to try and counteract the effects of loving food, with no willpower, and no running. Although... while participating in "strongman cardio" today it did cause me to wonder wtf kind of cardio requires chalk. I can still run a mile, so maybe it works.

11/1: 2.68

11/6: 3.2
11/9: 2.79

I was sick last week and that put me a few days behind... here’s hoping I can make up some miles the rest of the month1 -

@Elise4270 This is how I feel!!! I am going to do my big warmup when I get home and then try just 1 mile. And then come home and do the rest of my PT workout/stretches. Then I will see how much farther I can go. Then ride on Sunday. I am doing a lunch swim on Monday if you want to head over. I work in Irving!!!1 -
So after my long run this morning I hop in the shower, towel off and notice my lips are blue - like really blue! I almost took a picture. Crazy right? It was 59 degrees with a chilly breeze. For most of my run I felt quite warm, so I’m a little weirded out by it. I feel ok.
Any one else experience this weirdness?0 -

Lol I mean it's still short of what my distance spread was in September . I was hoping to be at 255 by the 10th so I'm behind in reality (I worked out that if I hit 700k in November and 700k in December my annual km count will land a hair over 5000...yes I'm shooting for it on the DL, shhhhhhh!!! lol).
What time are you hoping to run at Firenze @Dazzler20? I feel your photos are bound to blow the group away!1 -
@PastorVincent - I could never do a pull up. Worked with lat pulls, worked with the assisted pull up machine, didn't work at it consistently enough, lost weight. Once in a great while I could do one unassisted pull up - if I wasn't lying to myself about how much the jump helped.
Somehow, at age 56, I became able to do a pull up. Then 2. Then 3. Doing 3 really excited me. I figured if I did one I could be cheating on the jump, and if I did 2 I could be slacking on the drop on the second one, but if I did 3 the middle one would be honest.
I can't tell you how to develop to be able to do that first pull up. Other than taking the weight off, I don't know what I did that mattered. I can tell you how to advance after you can do 1 or 2: Put a pull up bar in your house. I bought a cheesy-marketed thing called Iron Gym. It's a total failure at most of what the marketing says it does, but it's a competent pull up bar when I hang it in a door way. When I saw I could do 3 pull ups, I was so fascinated with the concept that I'd just do 3 several times a day, whenever I walked past the the doorway with my pull up bar and thought about it.
Multiple times during the day didn't last, but doing 3 sets of pull ups every morning I'm at home did. It started with sets of 3, then 4, then 5 . . . and so on as I was able to do more. Kind of like stretching a long run to longer distances, just keep doing the same old until it's easy, then do a little more. Stayed at 10 for a long time because that was a magic number. Then one day I did 12, and the gradual advance was back on. These days, I do 3 sets of 35 pull ups every morning. There's a little bit of core work disguised in the pull ups, and of course a strong core helps with running.
The pull up is a saving grace when I have a foot or ankle injury and can't run. It reminds me that I can still do *something*. And even after having been able to do pull ups for 5 years, sometimes I'm still surprised that they're so easy when I couldn't do them at all for the first 55+ years of my life.8 -
Well here’s the thing. Tonight - I DID A PULL UP!!
Now don’t go getting all excited that now I’ve reached my life’s goal and have to consider what’s next - it wasn’t a true pull-up, as it involved a large elastic band and my foot in it to take some of the weight. I’ve used assisted pull-up machines before and also assisted dip machines, but this was so straightforward and easy - just a giant elastic band looped over the bar, put your foot in, jump and grab the bar and go from there. Actually I was mostly impressed that I could jump up and grab the bar in the first place.
I tried the next band down (gives less support) and had the strength for 2 pull-ups. So I know now, that given time (a year? Two years?) I WILL achieve one non-assisted pull-up. Who knows where that will lead....
So @PastorVincent, there is a really easy way to get there.10 -
Nice deadlift @hanlonsk Well done!!!
I’ve just started crossfit, but am keen to join their barbell club when they let me. Tonight we did front squats and overhead squats. Oh my muscles are going to hurt the next few days!!!2 -

Not blue lips, but sometimes after a long run in colder weather I'll notice that warm water feels hot. I take this to mean hypothermia was trying to sneak up on me, and I didn't dress quite warm enough. So far, I haven't had a disaster; but I am aware of cautionary tales about runners getting hypothermia and not recognizing it in real time.0 -
Rest day today, and the shortest ever low maintenance season between lawn mowing and snow shoveling. Mowed the lawn for the last time yesterday afternoon. Shoveled the driveway for the first this morning. Let the lawnmower run to burn the last of this season's gas while I was pushing the snow shovel.
The glass is half full: Because I'm retired, I was able to wait till the sun had melted the snow where the shadow of the house doesn't keep it cold all day long. And I didn't have to drive anywhere till after I had shoveled. The lawnmower is now parked in back of the snowblower, which I hope not to need for another couple of months.
Depending on which weather app/site I believe, it temperature should be in the high teens or low 20s to start tomorrow's paced run. Call it about 20º F (11º C) colder than what I've run in so far this season. Time to break out some running clothes I haven't used in quite a while.0 -

Running rest day today because of my half marathon tomorrow. I went to the yoga studio for a class before heading to my torture physical therapy session for my injured gluteus medius muscle. Ouch!!! These PT sessions are a huge pain in my butt (ba da bum). I am going to be stupid sore for this race tomorrow.

10---3.33 think my next run I'll use DH's Garmin... I'm seeing my hr trend upwards.. today average was 171, max 204 average pace was only 12 min/mile... It did not feel that hard. I do feel like I have some intercostal pain... I meant to ask my PCP about it last visit, but I forget when he brought up the mammogram.

Big Hary Audacious Goal: Sub 4 hours in Pittsburgh 2018!
Official Marathon PR: 4:11:28
Next Races (more as I find them):
Thanksgiving morning - Turkey Trot - Double Gobbler! (5K + 5 miles)
12/02/17 - Santa 5k
05/06/18 - Pittsburgh Marathon - aiming for sub four hours.
05/12/18 - Glacier Ridge 50k Trail Ultra (or maybe 30K Still debating)
2020 - Disney World Dopey! (if can raise funds)
So I looked at the temp and it was like 28F (and falling). I knew that meant cold gear time. So I grabbed my gear and headed out. I was not sure if I had grabbed too much or not - winter temps have hit here suddenly, something like a 40F drop in the last 2 days so not really cold acclimated yet.
Well I put on my lightest gloves and left my hat behind and head out.... did not get out the door before I was pulling up my balaclava that is built into my cold gear shirt to stop the blast of wind in my face. Slapped on my Oakley's to cover my eyes and hit the trail. Knocked back 7 miles at a slower pace (9:38) than lately but was tired before I started due to long hours this week at work.
Came in and looked at the temp... feels like was 16F (-9C)! Ops.
My kit did okay save for my hands. fingers were painfully cold for a good mile or 2. Eventually, they stopped hurting, at least until I got in the shower and lukewarm water hit them. Ouch.
So need to work on that a bit. I need to get my gear to take me to 0 comfortable if I am going to keep up training this winter. I am going to need a real balaclava though as my face feels a bit stingy still two hours later. Probably shop one out tomorrow.

@girlinahat - a pull-up is one of my life goals as well... at this point it seems much more likely than my 6 pack abs life goal. I LOVE the bands for assisted pull-ups. Both the assistance machines, and the cross fit style modifications (i.e. Ring rows, etc) don't seem to carry over enough for me. You wouldn't think the assistance machine would be that different, but I struggle with it. Trainer has me go from foot in band, to knee in band, to next lower band, if that helps. The logic being that the knee in band is still the same amount of support, but less spring assist. The other thing that seems to be making a pull-up look more likely possible, and helping things like the deadlift- is just dead hangs. Because grip strength is one of my limiting factors in the process. It occurred to me I would never be able to do 10 pull-ups, if I couldn't hold on to the bar long enough to complete them.1

@JessicaMcB and @7lenny7 Wow, the transformation between both of your before and after pictures is absolutely incredible!
@JessicaMcB Given the negative news we are constantly surrounded by, reading notes like that goes a good way to restoring my belief in humanity!
@girlinahat Great pictures of London! Never knew about that tiny beach either...looks like it's near the OXO tower though, right? And great job on that pull-up!
@amymoreorless Good luck on your race tomorrow!
I bought some KT tape for my shin and taped it up before going to bed. It seemed to help a lot for this morning's 15-miler, but then the ache started to return a little throughout the day, so I'll leave it on and see how it helps with a weekend free of any running.

I'm no super runner, but I've definitely come a long way from where I started. I was also embarrassed to put on running clothes and join the group of "real runners" every week. Many of us have been exactly in that place.
@Elise4270 I hate the headphone cord but I'm always forgetting to charge my wireless ones and they are kind of awkward and uncomfortable, so I end up reverting back. I'm tempted to try the bone conduction kind but I'm afraid they will be uncomfortable so I haven't invested. Anybody use those?
Snowed here overnight and it's cold. Not looking forward to this. I'm going to have to figure out how to dress for Sunday's HM.
I haven't used them, but a friend of mine uses Aftershokz and says they're the best headphones evah!2 -
Bought a few more pieces of cold gear today and now my wallet feels lighter. I'll need it next week though. High of -15C next Thursday...2

Did you wake up and run, or run and then go to bed? I would normally think the former, but the post suggests the latter. Confusing for poor little me!
ETA: I guess it’s not really that important if you answer this...doesn’t change your awesomeness.0
