Nov 12 – 3.17 mile Vancouver Fall Classic 5K
My knee had been bothering me since my workout on Thursday (I wasn't able to straighten it - zoinks!). I took a couple of rest days and woke up this morning feeling great.
It was stormy and pouring rain, but the weather beings smiled on me and the rain stopped exactly as I crossed the finish line. I was so happy I had decided to put my coat in gear check.
I set a PR with a time of 39:39 (according to my Garmin - final results aren't posted yet), and it was the first race I've done with no walking. Avg hr 183, max 195. Avg pace: 12:30 min/mile; best pace: 10:14 min/mile. Feeling happy with my result!
MTD: 14.31 / 50 miles
A storming race and you got a PR!?!? That deserves a major celebration of some kind!
Ha, no, whoops. I wrote that wrong. The rain stopped when I crossed the START line.1 -
Congratulations @shrcpr ! I bet that was a gorgeous and scenic race.1

No run today, but ran yesterday. Week 10, day 2 of 10K done. I felt less like I was going to die than I did when I completed day 1 on Thursday. I weighed in on Friday and I've lost weight so MyFitnessPal tells me I burned four fewer calories for the same amount of work. Good news and bad.5

Update on my November goal of 130 with a stretch of 150

Week 2: 44.4 (80.3 total )

Wow, lots of races today! Congrats to @lporter229, @katharmonic, and @shrcpr for those HMs; and WTG @RunRachelleRun with a PR 5K!0

Congrats to all the racers today!!
I ran a 10k race in St Augustine today as well. Was a little disappointed, finished about 2 minutes slower than my goal Trying to remind myself that I have been training for a marathon, and the 10k was just for fun. It's still hard not to get competitive with yourself. I havent been doing much for speed work, so trying to run 6.2 miles fast has me feeling more exhausted than my regularly scheduled long runs.4 -
I had my HM today, too - my first one ever. Time was 2:31 so 11:34 min/mile. Every step after 10.5 miles was a PR for me. I am so happy that I made it through and was able to run the whole way, except when getting water. It was a beautiful day in Monterey Bay along the ocean. Started out around 53 degrees so perfect weather. Over 5,500 runners so an overall amazing experience!
Great job @shrcpr !!! That sounds like a beautiful race - love Monterey Bay. Congrats on your PR distance and time, great effort!
Great 5k PR @RunRachelleRun
Thanks to all of you for the congrats on finishing my HM. Ready to curl into bed with the heated mattress pad for those sore legs.

Today's notes – It was "fool me" weather today. Near freezing in the morning, but gun time for my race was 11:45 AM. By the time I got to the venue, it was clear I would run in shorts. I had put a long sleeve tech shirt under my singlet, and I was thinking that might be too much; but it turned out not to be so warm as to make me suffer from heat. I did wear gloves, and appreciated having them.
Pete Glavin started an Upstate New York post-college cross country series in 1990. Pete passed away several years ago, but the series lives on in his memory. This is the 28th year for the series, and the first year I have run any of the races. I did not register for the series, but registered for races 4 and 5 as individual races. Race #4 was October 29, in the rain and mud. Race #5 was today, in sunshine with patches of snow left from Friday in shaded spots and some mud in the low lying areas.
The women's 6K started at 11:00 AM. I got a picture of the ladies lined up and a couple shots of the pack starting out:
Then I put my phone back into my SPIbelt, and set off to run my warmup. I figured I could run the first loop of the course and not interfere with the ladies' race, because they had a generous head start on me; turned out I did pass the slowest female runner, but that was okay. I could go wide around her and yield tangents, and she knows who I am so I knew she wouldn't freak out. Garmin says it was 30º F (-1º C) when I started my 2-ish mile warmup.
Ditched my warm up pants, changed into my spikes, and ditched my jacket for the race. By the time the men started, Garmin says it was 37º F (+3º C). There was a little breeze in the exposed high places, just enough to make me appreciate my gloves. Ran the upper loop while sorting out where I belonged in the pack. Had no trouble with the tree that fell across the route about 1200 m in; just a little hop to clear an obstacle about a foot high. Then I got to the lower loop, which I had never seen before. It was, um, a little technical. Not technical like the trail races @MNLittleFinn writes about, but some pretty steep downhills with muddy slick spots, a few roots, and some graveled areas just to blunt my spikes. In miles 2 and 3 I traded places with another guy a few times. I was faster on the grassy surfaces, but he was a better technical runner. Got to an extended stretch of grass, and thought I needed to build a big enough lead so he couldn't catch me when it got technical again. And I didn't see him again.
Saw my team captain wipe out on a muddy patch in that area, but he didn't stay down long. About 100 meters further I caught him; normally he is faster than I am. I passed several guys, and got to a point where the people ahead of me were around bends and out of view. Fortunately, there were spectators and trail marshals in key spots. I did not lose the route.
Cross country is deceptive. The races aren't all that long, and they have these hills that aren't all that long; but they can be steep, and they seem to be a much bigger deal than they ought to be. Going up the hill that everyone talks about (coming back from that steep downhill that worried me technically), I ended up having to walk. My team captain and a guy I know from Buffalo passed me there. Ran some more, seriously short on gas.
Got back to the upper loop. There was an uphill in that loop starting maybe 200 meters from the start line and continuing for maybe 400 meters. It wasn't that big a deal, the first time. The second time, I ran out of gas entirely. Had to walk. Counted paces. After 48 paces, started running again. I wasn't fast at that point, but I got to the top of the hill. Then came the easy part of the upper loop (including hopping that downed tree a second time.)
This is why we do interval work. 600's at R pace are brutal, but they teach you that when you totally run out of gas running fast, you can run again after a short recovery. That lesson served me well during the race.
I might have passed one or two guys after that, I don't remember. But I got to a point where I wasn't going to catch the guys in front of me, and I didn't know how close the guys behind me were. I cruised on, trying to maintain pace but not burn out. Got to the home stretch, and there was a tight turn. I could see guys behind me. They weren't very far. So I poured it on. Finished the race with a stride, trying not to let anyone pass me. One guy did, right at the finish; but he was clearly more than one age group younger than me, so that was okay.
Walked around, belatedly remembered to stop my Garmin. It said 35:31.5, but I knew I had beat 35 minutes. Saw my team captain. He told me we were 1 and 2 in our age group. Say what? With walking breaks? But he knew the field, and he was right. GVH 60-69 men finished 1-2-7 to beat Syracuse Track Club's 3-4-5 for first team this race. Syracuse was still the first team for the series, because of better results the first 4 races.
So, there was an awards ceremony. Big deal of awards for the series. It was fun seeing how many people I knew got something. Top 3 teams by age group got beer glasses. There was a sound track about allowing X glasses to be distributed to the team (I think 9?) and if your team had more than 9 runners in the series you had to decide who got the glasses. Someone handed me a glass. I didn't audit how the decision was made; I know I contributed to our 1st place finish today and our 2nd place finish in race #4.
There was no bling for 2nd in the age group for the individual race. That's okay. There were bottles of wine for top 10 individuals in the series. I was having a fine time recognizing people I knew getting bottles of wine, when they said I was 7th (?) in the 60-69 age group for the series. Say what? I didn't register for the series, and I only ran 2 races. That can't be right. Turns out it was based on a point system, with no minimum number of races required to make the points count. 4th in one race and 2nd in another added up to enough points to make the list. So I got some series bling even though I earned no individual race bling:
I turned out my official time was 34:42.6. That was 52nd of 98 overall, and 2nd of 24 in the M 60-69 age group. I finished 2.4 seconds ahead of the guy who won the age group in race #4. My team captain was ahead of me. The other guy who was ahead of me in race #4 didn't show up today.
I told several people today that I hate cross country. Mostly, they responded with something like, "But you're good at it." I don't think so. I happen to be fast for my age, but I saw several examples of guys who are slower than me but better cross country runners. Maybe if I stick with it, I'll get better.
Cross country sucks. But making a difference for my team feels great.

I got back this afternoon from my weekend at UNT to visit my son and his girlfriend. We had a great time. My son is in an organization called Talons and they shoot off the canon at the football games. It was so fun seeing him in the homecoming parade and on the field at the game. We did do lots of eating out and a little more drinking than usual. They sell beer at the football games. I really needed my run when I got home today after all that and the drive home. It was a good run too, but I am extremely tired now. I have been reading through the thread and I gave lots of awesomes. It sounds like everyone had a great weekend of running. Congrats to all who raced this weekend. You all did great!

@RunRachelleRun super PR
@shrcpr super HM!
Great job @MobyCarp – we went yesterday to cheer on Skip’s friend who made State XC meet and your comment on hating XC made me think of Skip. After running all around the course to cheer on her teammate she said it sucked that running the course was easier than running to watch people race. Ha ha

Great run on Friday. For Saturday's long run I was planning on going to the LSU lakes; however a home football game with an 11 am kick off prevented that. I went back to bed and my 11 miler got done in the late afternoon. This is the last run in double digits before the half marathon Dec. 2, so I guess tapering begins? I still have an 8 miler scheduled for next Saturday.
Travel plans changed for this week, only traveling on Wednesday for work. This means I will be able to run everyday but Wednesday this week.
Congrats to everyone who raced this weekend! Some awesome accomplishments!
@JessicaMcB and @7lenny7 - WOW on the transformations! I really thought JessicaMcB picture was a relative of some sort!

10 km North West Rim Bush Trail Exploration Run with my neighbor Steve and our friend Cam.
From across the valley in my back yard we could see some trails highlighted with the fresh snow that we didn't even realize existed so we had no choice but to blindly point our shoes into the trees to see where they would take us. Bush Basher's following a squiggle between trees . Nothing fast but just a lot of fun. Now I/we have a new 10km trail we can link with other trails in the area to make for some interesting adventures. Because of the hills and grades it would have a completely different feel if we ran it in the reverse direction, would seem much easier.
Exploration Run starting on what is known as Cadillac Ranch connecting to the Lower Rim Trail ( Y Loop ) down hill to the CN Rail Drainage Ditch, across the Drainage and then the Exploration started following the Hint of a Trail through the trees uphill to the 5km mark under the Main High Voltage Power line with a great view looking South into the River Valley and Bridges back in Town. The irony is we have used this viewpoint for Group Selfies in the past using the Cadillac Ranch Highline Trail, just never notice the connector trail before, darn grass masking trails. I had to do some walking on the Homeward bound section as my legs were just trashed, to many driving miles in the last week, not enough running, not enough Hills or Trails.
3 Deer, 2 Moose, covey of Prairie Chickens, covey of Ptarmigan and 10,000++ Rabbit Tracks. The Moose were surprised by us as we weren't talking just gliding along on a long gentle twisting downhill slope covered in 2-4" of fresh soft snow = quiet footstrikes and popped out of the trees right beside them. For such a big animal when they turn there head up and dive into the trees they are very quiet, just the sound of branch's scrapping along their body and then they disappear. My friends Steve and Cam are faster than me so they pretty much stepped on the Prairie Chickens/Ptarmigan before they bolted into flight to escape.
So many of our Trails are on the verge of being closed for the season due to snow and dangerous/unstable footing on the sidehills and steeper downhills. If we get the 6-10" of snow forecast for this week most of them will be done - unless someone packs them down with a snowmobile. Even though we are only 5km from town some of the little hidden valleys/gullies have no CP coverage so if you were alone, fell and got hurt would have to drag your self out to the edge for CP coverage to call for help. Then good luck guiding the emerg service rescuers to you.
11/04 6.2 km – 143.8 km - MTD 006.2 km – YTD 1207.67 km
11/08 5.0 km – 138.8 km - MTD 011.2 km – YTD 1212.67 km
11/09 5.0 km – 133.8 km - MTD 016.2 km – YTD 1217.67 km
11/12 10.0 km – 123.8 km - MTD 026.2 km – YTD 1227.67 km North West Rim Trail Exploration
I need to get a minimum of 6km everyday for the rest of the month to make minimum goal

lporter229 wrote: »Honor Run half marathon today. The race was in support of veterans and I was running this race in honor of my father. No expectations of a PR for multiple reasons, but I was pleased with my results on a fairly hilly course and sub freezing temps. I finished in 1:41:30 which earned me 2nd in my age group and 8th female over all (out of 319). Considering that I have done no legitimate speed work other than a couple of treadmill intervals since Feb, I am feeling pretty pleased. My inability to get my hamstrings completely healed have left me feeling a little uncertain about my running abilities these days, so it was nice to see that I am not that far off of PR pace, even without optimal training.
@lporter229 You give me hope! I haven't done much speedwork since April in favour of distance. You rock!cburke8909 wrote: »No runs for me this weekend but plenty of yard Work. Doctor's appointment Thursday suggested that muscle tear was small but deep and may need lots of TCL to heal fully.
@cburke8909 Oh, no, I'm so disappointed for you. But bravo for your alternative strategies I see on MapMyFitness.Congrats to all the racers today!!
I ran a 10k race in St Augustine today as well. @bjderhak That's me too. Last parkrun PB was in April, then marathon training and my marathon August 27, and I'm over 2 minutes slower on my hard effort parkruns now. But dammit, I do love long distance!! Well done on only being 2 minutes slower for a 10 km!!
@katharmonic Love how you kept running!
Now I'm considering donuts for long run fuel. Normally I can't handle chewing on my runs, but donuts are easy to eat anytime!

Today's notes- REST day today. Having two rest days a week is taking some getting used to, but I know, in the end, it will be good. I emailed coach over the weekend, asking about what I'll be looking at for peak mileage, just so I could get an idea of what he might have in store for me.
He told me that, with my prior weekly max of 55 miles, I will be looking at somewhat over that, but not by much, and not for a long period of time. Coach really emphasizes quality over quantity in training. With course records at Superior 100, and Wild Duluth 100k, and a podium finish at Zumbro 100, he definitely knows what he's doing, but it's a mindset change for me.
That is the funny thing with ultra, there really are 2 different training mindsets, as @JessicaMcB told me. There are the folks who get in tons of miles, like our Jessica (though her quality is high too), and people who are lower mileage but really emphasize bang for buck in training, which is what coach Jake does.
I don't really have a philosophy in training. I hit a lot of miles in Marathon and 100k training, and am now in a lower mileage, higher quality cycle for Zumbro. It will be interesting to see how it compares. Either way, I'm still working on telling myself that I should stop overthinking, let coach Jake do that part for me, and just give input on how things are going.
Anyway, enough of all that. Have a Runderful day everyone!

@skippygirlsmom - you should tell them you need to come along to I/ITSEC next year! I've done that 5K the last few years and my students have been presenting at the Future Leaders booth the last 10 years. This year they wrote a simulation on the fastest ways to board people on an airplane. They have done a great job, but their fastest solution is one that just isn't feasible in the real world. (Load the window seats first, then the middle seats, then the aisles). So they will have a good "lessons learned" section to the project. But the simulations they wrote are very good and they also added a Vive (VR) to the project which is really just for show (not a simulation).
Today was strength training in the morning and the official start of Strong Curves. I've been reading and trying out some of the exercises and today I started on one of the plans in the book. I am not following it exactly -- author says you must eat properly and shouldn't do as much cardio as I do, but I'm hoping it will make me stronger anyway. I eat pretty well... but I'm not giving up chocolate or wine. Or running or cycling!

4 mile easy run today. 62 miles for the month.
Going to add some hill training 1 day a week and be more consistent with strength training my legs as well. When I get tired on runs its always my leg muscles that want to give out before my heart/lungs so I am assuming that means they need to be stronger. Thoughts?
Next race: Florida WestCoast 1/2 marathon in Sarasota coming up dec 10. Should be fun.

Rolled my ankle a little toward the end this morning while I was fiddling with my headphones. Tomorrow is 3miles or cross training and while I would usually choose the run, I might do some less impact work just to make sure things aren't too niggly. We'll see how it feels through the rest of today. Doesn't help that I picked my most uncomfortable shoes to wear to the office today.
Otherwise, it was a great run on a new route, but I efinitely need to get a headlamp. This was a "safer" route than I usually take according to hubby, but the fancy schmancy neighborhood doesn't have any street lights and I couldn't see a darned thing. Had to do an out-and-back instead of the loop I fancied because I couldn't read the street signs.

I havent been doing much for speed work, so trying to run 6.2 miles fast has me feeling more exhausted than my regularly scheduled long runs.
This is so me! I get so caught up in the race that I forget I'm actually training for a much longer distance and I don't have to crush it every time!3 -
I love hearing everyone's HM stories from this weekend! My first is just shy of 4 weeks away. Just trying to log the miles and stay healthy and uninjured at this point!4

Thanks to everyone for all the kind welcome words and I love the before/after pictures! Amazing and very inspirational.
I ran the Richmond HM on Saturday. Cold start but it’s a great course with lots of cheering spectators along the way. I finished in 2:19 and was happy with that time compared to some hilly HMs that I’ve ran lately. It was bittersweet trip. At my best friend’s suggestion, there were 5 of us who registered to run the full at the first of this year. She and I ran it in 2014 and this was the 40th anniversary so why not do it again? Tragically, she was diagnosed with cancer in March and passed away in August at the age of 48 years old. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t miss her but coming down that last stretch into the finish line was especially emotional for me. In addition, another one of us 5 was tragically killed in a car accident in September. Her husband ran the full in her honor. It would have been their first full marathon. I know they were both there watching over us, but dang I wish they were there in person!
