Gulp. I just contacted a local running group that will meet up in south Huntsville for a 6 mile run early Thursday morning. Don't know how well this will turn out. She said they usually run 10:30 a mile where my usual is 11:30. She said they wouldn't leave me behind, but....
I'll either keel over or my time might improve. Guess I'll find out.
@skippygirlsmom or @Stoshew71 have y'all ever heard of the Sleepy Hollow runners or Rebecca Reynolds?5 -
fitoverfortymom wrote: »@fitoverfortymom - that larkspur race I showed you pictures of might be a good bridge between road and trail. Nothing too terribly technical - providing you don't pick the one year with 12 inches of snow... like I did... but they have a variety of distances to pick from as well - 4mike, 8 mile, 25k, and 50k.
This must be the one? https://www.coloradorunnerevents.com/Greenland/.
Are you in CO?
By May 5 I could definitely do the 8miler, if not the 25k. That gives me a good chunk of any good weather we have this winter to do long runs on trails (I am right along the foothills so it's just a short drive). Trails aren't practical during the week, but totally doable on weekends. Plus, hubby got a new mountain bike and then we can co-activity (he hates running, and bumpy biking makes my lady parts no bueno). It's a La Nina year, which supposedly means less snow anyway. SO MANY IDEAS.
Yes! That is the one. I’ve done the 8miler twice now. Friend did 8mile and 4mile (she wasn’t convinced she wanted to repeat our first 8mile adventure). 70degrees and prepared for the distance was WAY more fun than 20degrees, snowing and not prepared for the distance on a good day.0 -
@WandaVaughn I don't know them, but they have been around a long time. Are you on Facebook? Join "we run huntsville" and "run 256" you know that's where the cool kids hang out...and you get all the info on local running groups. I have yet to hear of a group that says they won't leave you and does, if they don't sweep they will tell you run at your own risk of being dropped. ha ha Glad you decided to give it a whirl.0
-
@skippygirlsmom - I joined "we run huntsville" but didn't know about the 256. I'll check them out, too. I actually live south of Huntsville - on top of Brindlee Mountain. But the only folks I know of who run up here run from the law! LOL! Hubby is with MCSO and tells me tales!0

I heard of The Sleepy Hollow Runners but don't know too much about them nor Rebecca. The only person I know that announces group runs in South Huntsville is Cary Long. But he likes trails and going over the Cecil Ashburn mountain a lot. That may or may not be your cup of tea. I live in Madison so I don't know the S Huntsville runners that well.

@Stoshew71 would you know about the "No runner left behind" group that meets Sunday mornings to introduce you to and run trails? That looked interesting, too.
*slants a cyber look at the trail enthusiasts on this thread.*0 -

Yes. I have ran that a couple of times. Great group. I would highly recommend it.
I usually use Sunday as my rest day since I usually go to church in the morning.0 -
One of my race photos from Sunday. They all turned out pretty terrible. This one above cracks me up (I'm on the right) because it's at the finish line and it looks like I'm pumping my arms like a crazy person who thinks they are winning the race or something. LOL. Really I was just trying to get this thing over with. Other finish pictures I have the most pained and annoyed expression on my face, and then there are a few where I look kind of terrified from the middle of the race. Ha.
Here's one from close to the start that is a bit more normal (I'm on right again):
Note re the how to dress chart above that it was 27 degrees and I was wearing lined tights and two layers of long sleeve shirt. Gloves and mittens, a thin neck gaiter, and a hat. Plenty warm and I ditched the gloves and took the mittens on and off several times. I was warm enough that I could have taken off the top shirt layer if I wanted, and my head got pretty hot so an earband might have been a better choice.

Way behind in the thread, but trying to catch up...
@ddmom0811 I spoke with a personal trainer about my stuff, and she made me short strength work outs that I do before I run a couple days a week. I am getting stronger for sure. Lifting heavier weights at least. I did NOT reduce cardio when I started the weights, I just do them on my "speed" days (days I run few miles, but at faster pace). *shrugs* works for me at least.
@BruinsGal_91 WHAT?!?! That chart is insane. Way too many clothes.
@MNLittleFinn @Stoshew71 - Ideal weight is where you are healthy and can do all the things within reason you want to.
How are you getting your BF number to use on the calculator?

Thanksgiving morning - Turkey Trot - Double Gobbler! (5K + 5 miles)
12/02/17 - Santa 5k

05/12/18 - Glacier Ridge 50k Trail Ultra (or maybe 30K Still debating)

Wore proper gloves this time, and hands were much more comfortable. None of that stinging pain in the shower either2 -
@katharmonic Great Photos!0

Nov. 14 - 4.2km fast... (for me) elliptical workout
MTD - 36.8km/80km1 -
11/14 - .75 mi walk, 2 mile run
My run was cut short and I didn't cool down due to a crisis phone call that our dryer wouldn't start. I had only run 1/3 mile but was determined to do at least 2 so I ran a little faster than normal. I ended up fixing the dryer in 2 min(thanks Google!) I should've gone back out to finish so I could sound bad@ss saying I fixed a dryer mid-run and kept going But I had already started later than I'd like and I was kinda over it but glad I got myself out the door.5 -
@katharmonic your pictures are great, I always look like I'm walking ha ha by the way how talk are you? You look really tall or everyone around you is really short.
@wandavaughn Skip and I have both run with no runner left behind. Super group!!! Lots of fun, they never leave anyone.1 -

Why think small? If you can raise funds, you can run Boston! (I can't raise funds, so I have to qualify.)0 -

I am way too slow to qualify for Boston, but that is okay. The Disney Dopey sounds like a lot more fun than Boston and is a greater challenge.

11/4 – 7.24 aborted paced run
11/5 – 11.15 easy

11/12 – 7.06 warm up + 8K cross country race
11/13 – rest day
11/14 – 6.21 warm up, short speed work, cool down
November running total to date – 73.84
Nominal challenge goal: 200 miles
Real goals: Stay healthy. Build base. Prepare for Club Nationals in early December and the start of Boston training in late December.
Today's notes – This evening's speed work assignment was 800 at T pace to warm up, then 2 or 3 sets of (400 at R, 800 at I, 1600 at T continual) with 4 minutes recovery between. I figured I wasn't up to 2 sets, so I'd do one. Ran the 800 at T (3:13 vs. 3:16 target), gave myself 400 m recovery, ran 400 at R (1:26, on target), 800 at I (3:10 vs. 3:00 to 3:04 target), and was totally out of gas. Slowed down to just do two laps of the track recovery, and called it good. Stopped the watch, and it told me "new maximum HR detected 195." Yeah, I felt pretty maxed out there.
Throw in a 2-ish mile warm up before and a 2-ish mile cool down after, and I got my 6 miles in.
Later I looked at the stats. My 800 "recovery" came in at 3:41 vs. 4:00 estimate for truly running easy or 3:16 target for T pace. Maybe I wasn't quite as totally wiped out as I thought? Looked at the HR; says the max was 161 (see max of 165 for Sunday's race, when I was forced to take walking breaks). Don't understand the HR numbers or what they're trying to tell me.
Came home, and my ankle ached a little. Iced it down, took some naproxyn, and it's fine now. That was confirmation that quitting the speed work when I did instead of standing around for 4 minutes and trying a second set was the right decision.
I just didn't have it today. But that's okay. I had it on Sunday, when it was more important.

Beautiful morning for a run. I took the next 2 days off to get ready for the cross country banquet. Scary huh? I literally bring EVERYTHING from garbage bags to tables to the food (that I cook). Anyway I slept in 40 minutes and it was actually light out when I started. It figures the school has a million things tomorrow... 9:00 is the Honor Roll ceremony since my girl is on the honor roll I need to be there at 12:00 the cap and gown people are there (really?) I think Skip can handle that herself. I have ZERO plan to buy their announcements so she can do the rest. Then to set up for the banquet at 4:00. I'm tired ha ha Gotta get in the shower and off to the school!

Today's notes- Today's assignment was 1:00 easy paced trail run. I went and ran my normal route because it gives me a nice combo of uphill, downhill, and flats. The snow was wet and slushy today and I stepped in a nice big puddle less than a mile in. I really do prefer real cold over this slushy stuff. Give me negative temps any day instead of this slushy *kitten*. Got in 4.2 miles in an hour for an average pace of 13:45. Mile 3, straight uphill on mostly single track, is still kicking my rear, but my downhills are really getting faster, so that's a help.
Run felt good and now it looks like I MIGHT make my goal for the month. I'll have to see what happens the rest of this week, and what the schedule for the end of the month looks like, when coach posts it.
Have a runderful day everyone!

@katharmonic that is tall for a woman. It's funny I'm like 5'5.5 or 6" and I'm taller than pretty much all my friends.
@teresa502 I like your picture! I always look like I'm going to die right there ha ha
@sarahthes I have the same problem when I put something over my mouth/face my glasses fog up. Someone told me to buy antifog stuff that divers use. I find if I have my nose out it doesn't happen as much.
