Nominal challenge goal: 200 miles
Real goals: Stay healthy. Build base. Prepare for Club Nationals in early December and the start of Boston training in late December.
Today's notes – The group run was renamed. It used to be the Medved Hot Chocolate Run, because it's organized by and starts from the Medved running store. Now it's called the Cocoa Joggers Club, a brain storm of one of the Medved marketing types. Same run, I can live with whatever the name is.
This evening the temp was in the low 40s, but minimal wind and no significant precipitation (a few intermittent flurries). The route was an out and back mostly on the Erie Canal Path. I can't get lost on this route, so I felt free to run at a natural pace regardless of what pace the leaders held. After a half mile or so, I realized the usual speed demons were treating me as a pace leader. That's okay.
There were multiple designated turn around points for picking your distance. The far point was advertised as a 6 mile distance. About 2.9 miles into the run, I told the folks with me that would be farther than 6. Then I told them when my watch ticked over 3 miles, and most of them turned around. One hardy soul kept running with me, and we had a nice conversation. I was trying to run easy, he was treating it as a tempo run. At one point, I told him I needed to let him drop me; after that, he let me slow him down several times. Took an alternate route back after the Canal Path, to avoid the traffic on Monroe Avenue. Ended up with 6.89 miles, and skipped the traditional OCD parking lot circle to get 7 miles because I felt my recovering ankle. It wasn't bad, and I didn't want it to get bad.
Stretched, had my hot chocolate, and came home. Iced down the ankle, and it feels perfectly normal now. This is the tricky part of recovery, because most of the time I feel totally healthy; but if I do something stupid, I can still re-injure myself. Playing it by ear and trying to stay get totally healthy.

@garygse - Ouch! I've had stress fractures in the foot, but it sounds like the leg takes longer to heal. I think I would have gone nuts if I couldn't still do upper body stuff. Pull ups were totally normal, other than having to be careful about how I landed when I finished a set; but practically everything else required at least a little adaptation.1
-
Wow, you all are great! Seeing your runs is very motivational.
I ended up skipping my outdoor run tonight. I'll be honest, it's not just the bears that make me nervous running in the dark alone. It's everything! Basically what I'm saying is, I'm 33 and afraid of the dark. Ha
But a woman was attacked while running in broad daylight not too long ago in my old neighborhood, and it has me freaked out a bit. I'm trying to find a running group or even one running partner in the area, but no luck yet. I'm quite sure I would be fine running on my own, and I've done it before. And as I said, the woman attacked in my old neighborhood was attacked during the day, so why I'm more afraid at night, I'm not sure.
I just need to suck it up and get out there! I really don't want to lose the momentum I have. I ran 8 miles two weekends ago and I want to be able to keep that up.3 -
@garygse Boo!!!1

@Eire228 - you can always go back to the dreadmill.1

I haven't been posting much of my progress on here but since it is halfway through the month I added up all my miles so far and I'm at 31/40! Actually really surprised that I am so close to my goal for the month already, considering I just started running as a newbie. I think I will just keep on going and depending on what my total miles for November are, I will pick a more challenging goal for December.
I'm so proud of everyone working so hard towards their own goal for this month! Keep at it! We are already halfway there.9 -
November goal: 70 miles
11/1: 3.4 miles
11/2: 3.1 miles
11/5: 7.7 miles
11/7: 4 miles
11/9: 3.5 miles
11/12: 7.7 miles
11/14: 3 miles (intervals)
11/15: 4 miles
36.4/70 miles
I had a nice 4 mile run this afternoon. I'm a little over halfway to my goal for the month, so I guess I'm right on track.
@garygse I'm so sorry about the stress fracture. That really sucks.
@Eire228 I never have run in the dark. It would just make me too nervous.

Pro tip: If you decide to wear a pair of running tights that are “a little loose, I’m sure they’ll be fine,” you will spend your entire run hiking those bad boys up as they try relentlessly to fall off your *kitten*. Lesson learned.

11/15 5.21 I'll weigh in on the clothing discussion. Today I ran in misty drizzle. I wore a racer-back singlet and compression capris. A wide brim hat to keep the rain out of my eyes. When I finished my "out" and turned for the "back", I was facing the ocean where a brisk breeze suddenly dropped the temp at least 3 degrees! Couldn't have been more than 70! (um...sorry....it's Hawaii...

@garygse that sucks. I’ve been listening to a load of podcasts recently which talk about ‘pool running’ as rehab. Maybe look into it?0

Lol I mean it's still short of what my distance spread was in September . I was hoping to be at 255 by the 10th so I'm behind in reality (I worked out that if I hit 700k in November and 700k in December my annual km count will land a hair over 5000...yes I'm shooting for it on the DL, shhhhhhh!!! lol).
What time are you hoping to run at Firenze @Dazzler21? I feel your photos are bound to blow the group away!
I'm not particularly fast but expecting somewhere between 3:30 and 3:40. Sub 3:30 would be the stuff dreams are made of.1 -
@_nikkiwolf_ - I was cracking up at your story of running with your co-worker! Unplanned speed work!
@NikolaosKey - I can relate to the soreness. I started a new glute program and feeling it today!
My daughter decided to come down in Feb and run the Daytona Beach HM with me! She's going to go for a PR and use it as a training run for the marathon she runs on the Pacific Coast Hwy in April. I don't think I'll be able to keep up with her pace but that's okay.
11/1 - 4 miles
11/2 - Strength training - tabatas - push ups/pull ups/sit ups and wall squats
11/3 - rest day and fly to NYC!

That's a great suggestion. Our YMCA has a big hydro running program that is really geared to injury recovery. I know several runners who have gone through long recoveries and kept up their fitness that way.1 -
Confession: I am forevermore confusing @katharmonic and @ddmom0811 And I just realized you are both posed the same in your profile pics and both wearing red. Somebody needs to change their pic and help me out3

Sorry to hear you are benched @garygse . Hang in there!
Good run today, only -20 with the wind! Got home and made the mistake of taking off my socks in front of Ben. Will he leave me over my gross feet? Stayed tuned !

Welp, not gonna be meeting my goal this month; doctor ordered at least a month of no weight-bearing exercise on my leg. He'll reassess again after that, but with the suspicion being a stress fracture, I see that changing into 3-4 months of no running. Yay me.
I guess it's time to start getting serious with the upper body workouts, and spending some quality time with the elliptical.
So sorry to hear this!!! I hope you can be distracted, and at least it's the cold months you will be out. I mean "cold" for Texas.1 -
11/1 - Started month with unplanned rest day. Damn I hate colds!
11/2 - 5 miles on a perfect morning to run (43° F and little wind)
11/3 - Unplanned rest day...can't shake this stupid virus!
11/4 - 5.1 miles.
11/5 - Planned rest day / church, etc.
11/6 - 5.1 miles. A bit chilly for November...wind chill was 19° F.
11/7 - 5 miles. A little warmer today.
11/8 - Overslept and didn't have time to run :-(
11/9 - 5 miles. Wind was brutal.
11/10 - 3.4 miles on treadmill, then upper body weights.
11/11 - 4.7 miles.
11/12 - Rest day.
11/13 - 4.5 miles.
11/14 - 5 miles. Warm enough to run in shorts!!
11/15 - 5.1 miles. Again, shorts and a long-sleeve shirt! It was almost 50° F!
11/16 - 5 miles on treadmill / Trek class, then upper body weights. Trek class kicked my *kitten*!

A rare weekday morning run for me, but the weather is so nice I wanted to take advantage and get a short run in outside.
And the real reason I ran this morning is I am so lazy about not wanting to shower multiple times - I really needed to shower and wash my hair this morning and thought I might as well run first, because if I put off the run until later I don't want to shower again. I used to wash my hair every single day regardless and now I try to get away with as few as possible times per week.
