@girlinahat the turkey trot I run in raises money for the crisis center in our area, it serves people who are in domestic violence situations, sexual abuse, all types of crisis counseling. It really is a family event with lots of kids running, families who are in town visiting running etc. It has about 1200 runners and is pretty much a staple in town, yesterday was it’s 25th anniversary. I don’t think it’s an excuse to eat or something put together to justify eating.
@JessicaMcB what was really funny with Skip is as they got to the last ½ miles her friend said are you going to sprint to the finish, Skip said yeah, she said okay you go I’m done. With about 100m to go Skip said she could hear here behind her and said oh no way and sped up. They were laughing at the end that her friend thought she has tricked her. Love it.
@MobyCarp congrats on your 1st place AG, sounds like a great race.
    Great picture @RunsOnEspresso
@7lenny7 beautiful daughter and handsome young man you have there. I’m so glad they went for a run with you.
    Fantastic @WandaVaughn
@_nikkiwolf_ nice job on the running gear shelves. I need to do that, I can never find what I want.

Oh my gosh turned around yesterday and Skip was talking to the owner at Fleet Feet so it seems we need to go there today. Wish me luck ha ha Actually I need to go and run first.

@_nikkiwolf_ - awesome that you organized your running gear! That's a lot of gear! It's so fun to buy it! That's all I want to buy these days -- cycling and running gear.

@7lenny7 - great pictures! So glad they ran with you!

I finally signed up for Charity Miles today. I had heard of it but hadn't ever done it. Gosh, I could have raised a lot of money for them over the past few years!

Turkey trot 5k for me this morning. Wasn't as fast as I'd hoped, but I did set a new pr by 1:12 and broke the 30 minutes mark for the first time in a 5k race...

    Official time was 29:32.

Well done on the sub-30! New PRs are always fun! :D

A bit of a rough 3 miles, beautiful weather but my legs were tired from yesterday. They are not used to that 10 min pace from the race. I didn't feel good until about 2.5 miles but I decided to call it 3 and get some things done today.

    @cecilaslater great PR
@ddmom0811 what are charity miles? I haven’t decided on the streak it usually beats me up for some reason.

    Hi everyone!
It's my first year running and I want to keep it going through the winter. I've been doing well with continuing to run outside in the colder weather so far, but the ground getting icy makes me nervous. I was looking into my options for the days when it's too icy to run and it looks like there's an indoor track not too far from my house. It's 400m inside a sports dome. There's also a cheapo gym I could sign up with that I could go to for treadmills.

I was just wondering if anyone had an opinion on which would be less boring?

I'm not a huge fan of the treadmill and I've never used one for the distances I've been getting to lately (7-10 km). I think I'll be bored running in place, but I'm not sure if running in a circle 25 times is going to be any better. Haha!

I guess I'm also asking if either is worth it? Or if I should just sit out the days when the ground is too treacherous and do something else instead. Go x-country skiing or skate the canal or something.

For context, I live in Ottawa, Canada. So, once winter truly hits, the sidewalks and trails I run on might never be ice free until March.

    11/1 = 10 miles
    11/2 = strength training
    11/3 = 5 miles
    11/4 = 19 miles
    11/5 = rest day
    11/6 = 4.5 miles and strength training
    11/7 = 8.5 miles
    11/8 = rest day
    11/9 = 6 miles
    11/10 = Vinyasa yoga class
    11/11 = 13 miles (New Braunfels Half)
    11/12 = 6 miles
    11/13 = Kettlebell strength training
    11/14 = 6 miles
    11/15 = 8.5 miles
    11/16 = Strength training
    11/17 = 6 miles
    11/18 = rest day
    11/19 = 20.5 miles
11/20 = 3 miles dreadmill and strength training
    11/21 = Vinyasa yoga class
    11/22 = 8.5 miles
    11/23 = 5 miles (Georgetown Turkey Trot)
    11/24 = 5 miles

Five easy miles on a sunny, 70 degree F, pretty day off work. :)

So, I guess I am supposed to start this tapering thing for my marathon on 12/10. How much should I be cutting my mileage? Does 25 this week and 15 next week sound reasonable? Should I also stop my 2xweek weight training? I am guessing yoga is still okay.

    134.5/175 (November goal miles)

    Upcoming Races:
    12/10 = BCS Marathon
1/6/18 = River Road Run Half Marathon

    11/24 - 1 mile walk, 3 mile run,.66 mile walk = 4.66 miles

I was pretty much getting angry that this is not getting any easier. I really need to have a good run soon to restore my faith that I am a runner and I like it :s

Temp was also climbing from 65F to 70F and it was really windy. Heading west was the worst as the SSW wind was going up my nose and down my throat in a weird way.

As little as I run compared to most of you, this month I've doubled my miles compared to the 2 previous challenge months and I think once the month ends I could use a few extra days off.

    @ceciliaslater Nice PR B)

I'm dying of impatience waiting for the official results to come out for my turkey trot. No running today. Still eating all the food and drinking all the wine that goes with getting together with family.

No contest. Go for the indoor track. Running repeated ovals at a steady state is indeed boring, but it's not as bad as the dreadmill. And you can make in more interesting with some speed work, which is harder to manage on the dreadmill.

Way back story: In the winter, I do speed work on an indoor 200m track. February 2016, we had a Saturday with high winds and low temperatures when all the outdoor group runs were canceled. I didn't think I could mange more than 10 to 13 miles outside, and it was likely that my water bottles would freeze solid within the first 10 miles. My training plan called for 22 miles that day. I considered running 5 mile loops from my home, but thought I might bail after 2 of them. So I went to run my 22 miles on a 200m indoor track. 177 laps later, I had a mental discipline for managing long runs on a track that has been useful a time or two since then.

A few months after that someone suggested I could have run my 22 miles on a treadmill in the same facility. I just stared at them. The thought had never occurred to me. After it was pointed out, I still don't see any way the treadmill would have been better and I see several ways it is worse.

Had MRI arthrogram today. I had planned on running before it, but was phoned early for an earlier appointment so I took it. (2 hours away makes for a long day).

Idk if I should try to get my day 2 streak mile on the TM tonight or not. The post procedure instructions say "reduced activity".... I may just take a pass today. Or i may try to suck it up a bit later, damage is done right?

I sure hope they find something on that MRI.

The verdict this morning is that I had a bad race yesterday. Can't run. Made a firm decision that I will do no running for at least 3 days. Reported off injured from the paced run for tomorrow morning. I'm thinking the first day I feel like I can run, I should take another rest day anyway.

This could really mess up my racing schedule, but it isn't the first time. Maybe some day I'll learn to back off enough.

    I Googled "MRI arthrogram".

    For others: http://www.uwmedicine.org/health-library/pages/mri-arthrogram.aspx

(They inject the joint with contrast medium then do an MRI, as I understand it.)

    Sounds painful! I'd rest.

@Elise4270 I feel unqualified to advise on the streak but I hope you get answers from the MRI.

A few pinches and the doctor who happened to be the easiest on the eyes I've ever encountered, was kind enough to be generous with the lidocaine. The MRI gets achy laying still in one place for so long. I'm less pain than usual

    November 2017 Runs

    02 Nov – 8 km
    04 Nov – 5 km parkrun
    05 Nov – 35 km – The Bloody Long Walk walk/run
    07 Nov – 3.2 km
    08 Nov – 10 km
    09 Nov – 12 km
    10 Nov – 7 km
    12 Nov – 18 km
    15 Nov – 5 km
    16 Nov – 10 km
    18 Nov – 5 km parkrun
    19 Nov – 24 km
    21 Nov – 6 km
    24 Nov – 9.2 km
    25 Nov – 5 km parkrun

It was warm again today, but parkrun was fun. I ran pretty fast or at tempo, and did some fast bursts on top of that. Did the 5K in 27:56.

My Fenix 5 says it was mostly in Zone 2... I've had this quite a lot. I run hard, but my heart (or HRM) thinks it's easy.

First, run outside if you can manage it. Any day that you can, will help your sanity.

For the times you can not... track vs dreadmill... it really is a personal decision.

    TRACK Pros
    You are actually moving
Easier to vary pace (speed work, easy day, etc)
    TRACK Cons
You have to count laps, and if you lose count your sunk :)
After the first lap scenery never changes.
    No hill work

    DREADMILL Pros
    Fully automated lap counting
    Can simulate hill work
Can help teach the feel of perfect pace
    DREADMILL Cons
Varying your pace is an awkward and slow
After first stride scenery never changes
If there are no fans you tend to stay in cloud of stale air

Between the two, I would choose the dreadmill. As much as I do not like the thing, it is marginally better than a track for me. I like telling dreadmill to give me random hills with an avg 5% grade for example. Plus I always lose track on a track.

SO, I do not want to panic anyone... but during the Turkey Trot I noticed the pacer had a Garmin on each wrist. So I asked and she said that the Fenix 5s gave her all the stats she wanted, but its GPS was horrible and constantly lost track of her, so she kept her older Garmin for pacing runs so that she would be able to monitor her pace better.

I figure she must just have a defective unit right? Is not the Fenix line like the top end for Garmin? Seems like the GPS on it should be rock solid?
