@skippygirlsmom I also should get long sleeves! So I can wear sleeves but no jacket. I would not be having these issues if my old clothes fit
I wish somebody would give me an academy gift card2 -
Well it turns out the Groupon savings isn't all that great. Supprise surprise surprise.
I picked up the 5s sapphire for 599 plus tax. Which is exactly what you'll pay anywhere else. Ok I saved about 6$. Shipping will probably be twice as long compared to if I had bought it from Garmin directly for 650 no tax or shipping. I didn't get a deal.
Least I got something I wanted and didn't just try to save a few bucks and in time for the Dec 2nd trail run with @BEERRUNNER and @LC0924 . I think dh and I are taking separate vehicles... So I'm down for a visit if anyone is interested.
I hate holidays and bait prices.
ETA I plan on streakin'. But it is going to involve adjusting my run time from after work to before or at lunch. The park closes from 5-6 to get ready for the holiday lights. Maybe I'll be a kitten and just go out there and see if they run me out at 530. I should prob take my phone on such a run in case they tow my car1 -
@Elise4270 Wow, now I'm jealous :wink Even if it wasn't a special deal, it's an awesome watch. I would love to have the Fenix 5S!
@greenolivetree As a short-term solution for getting long sleeves: I have made arm warmers from socks in the past. Bought a pair of knee-length mens socks, cut off the part below the ankle, and finished I actually wore those for my first marathon last year, because the "real" sleeves I ordered hadn't arrived. It worked well and was a super cheap solution.
@skippygirlsmom Sounds like there is a good chance that your job situation will work out, I'll beep my fingers crossed!
@MobyCarp I hope both the ankle and the hip? niggle continue healing.
@lporter229 Your new training plan sounds very sensible. I really should do more strength training too! It's just no fun at all, I'd much rather run
---
So, just when everyone else is about to start their run streak, I've decided to finish mine.
My left knee was hurting a bit on Sunday and Monday. First I thought it was just the bruise from falling on Saturday, but on Tuesday morning it also started to hurt during the day when I was just walking around. Not a good sign!
I spent the entire day arguing with myself. I really wanted to continue my planned one-month streak to the end. But this is the knee that already gave me trouble at the beginning of the year... In the end I decided to do one more run. Because Tuesday was a really long day, where I went from work right to the bouldering gym, had a drink with friends afterwards and only got home around 23:00, feeling really tired. So if I had stopped the streak that day, I wouldn't have been sure that I really quit out of common sense and not because it was late and I was exhausted. Slightly convoluted bit of logic, I know
After three weeks of running every evening, it felt weird to do nothing, so I went for a walk instead. I will take Thursday and Friday off from running too, hopefully that will be enough for the knee to recover.4 -
@_nikkiwolf_ I hope the knee is better. My PT says "I don't worry as much about what hurts while you as much as what hurts when you aren't running". Love the idea on the sleeves.1

@skippygirlsmom the key, then, is to never stop running!
Big plans tomorrow, my two college kids have both agreed to go running with me in the morning. Not only that, but we're going trail running with Kody! I'd make my youngest go too, but he strained his hip flexor in basketball tryouts Monday and needs to rest it. Both have warned me that they haven't run much lately and not to expect much but I don't care if we walk the whole way, I just want to get out there with them.6 -
@7lenny7 is on to my piriformal syndrome coping strategy
Go @MNLittleFinn !!!
Cut run short this morning at 20 because we had a huge dump of snow last night and we have a bunch of elderly neighbours with no help. Shoveled for an hour and a half and came in. Calves are oddly massive even for me today, is shovelling pump a thing ?
Remembered to get my registration logged for RDM today. Some big scary secret goals there....

@skippygirlsmom Sorry to hear about your work situation; hopefully something better comes out of it all. And great news about Skip getting accepted! Finally, dog owners taking up the entire path with them on one side and the dog on the other with the leash taking up the space in between is one of my pet (no pun intended) peeves.
@Elise4270 Yay on the Garmin! Maybe the price wasn't the greatest deal, but the watch certainly is!
@_nikkiwolf_ You definitely made the right call in allowing some time for your knee to recover.
@7lenny7 - I love that "never stop running" logic...it just makes too much darned sense!
One week down of no running, and it feels like it's been a month already. Ellipticals officially suck, and I have a new-found deep respect for anyone that endures the *kitten* things on a daily basis.
3 -
@7lenny7 @skippygirlsmom I was changing into running attire and felt more pain than I was comfortable with, so I doffed my running duds and opted to not run. I'm thinking I should have just gone running since I don't necessarily hurt running! It's not too late for the garage TM!
@garygse Congratulations on the time you do get on the elliptical. That's one hard *kitten* workout
I keep looking at pictures of the Garmin... I may have to take my obsession with it to confession
ETA @JessicaMcB craziness going on with the calves!2 -

I had a nice morning - went to the Y and did yoga for an hour. It was a nice class - lots of good stretching and balancing and a good break from the rather intense hot power yoga I've been doing most recently. I had brought my running stuff with me thinking I'd go to work for a while then stop and run before heading home. But I was already at the Y, and hated to make another trip, so I just got the run in while I was there. More efficient!
Spent a few hours at work, which turned out to be a lot more tracking down spreadsheet data problems than I hoped, and now I'm back home. The dog is walked, the wine is poured, and the feet are up.
Good luck to everyone who is turkey trotting tomorrow! I have an 8k planned (but can switch to the 4k option if the mood strikes). Right now, it just sounds cold and unpleasant but at least it doesn't start until 10 am!

Hello everyone. I'm still here, although about 675 posts behind.
My new doctor (old one retired) changed my medication completely on October 31. I proceeded to spend the next two weeks in pure hell due to side effects and the fact that the meds just weren't working. During those two weeks, I was so miserable I couldn't run, only walk every now and then. I even missed a few days of work because of the debilitating anxiety and panic. I couldn't eat, either, as I had zero appetite and a lot of nausea, which only contributed to my extreme lack of energy. After two weeks of this, my boyfriend told me it'd been long enough, and to call my doctor.
I convinced my doctor to switch me back to what I was taking before, the meds that I knew would work and give me some stability. It's been about a week since then and I'm starting to feel a little more normal. I started running again last Thursday, but it's been slow going and a bit rough. I feel like I haven't run in months. I generally only have enough energy to get through about 5k at a time. But, it's better than nothing I guess.
I'm not out of the woods yet. My energy is not really back yet. I have a lot of headaches. The eye problems that one of the new meds gave me haven't gone away completely yet, but my eyes are improving slowly. My appetite is also coming back slowly.
Tomorrow, if I have enough energy, I will run again. If I don't, it's not a big deal. I am still healing from a very traumatic couple of weeks, and it will take time until I'm back to my old schedule.
In the meantime, reading everyone's posts and seeing all the pictures is therapeutic. So thank you, everyone, for being there for me when I need it.

I got 4.1 chilly miles in. It was pretty nice except the chilly wind made my nose run the whole time. Planning on getting a run in in the morning. My daughter and her boyfriend should be here soon and my son and his girlfriend will be in late tomorrow. I'm really looking forward to it. I hope to update here, but I may not get it done until Sunday. Happy Thanksgiving to those in the US. Happy Thursday to everyone else!

@skippygirlsmom - There is a sound track that goes with the whiteboard. I missed it yesterday because I was still running my warmup; but I've heard enough of them and know enough context that I understand pretty much everything on the board. Which makes it perfect for the B&W photo "no people, no explanation" challenge. My team mates will understand it, pretty much no one else will.
Today I physically could have gone out for an easy 3 miles. If the temperature had been in the 40s, I might have; but it was near freezing, and that leg niggle is a bit stiff in the cold. Watched how it felt going up and down stairs, and decided to play it conservative with an extra rest day because I'd feel pretty stupid if I ran 3 miles today then couldn't run tomorrow morning at 9 AM. So I shall see.
Forecast for gun time is about freezing with SW wind 9 mph. Familiar weather, I know how to dress for that when I'm healthy. I've done what I can, packed the back of dry clothes to change into afterward, and set the alarm for tomorrow morning. Next time I'm back here I should have a race report, hopefully from a race I complete. I've run this one every year since I became a runner, and don't want to break that streak.6 -

First day running this week. Yesterday was cold and ugh and I had an appointment after work (my hair is now red with purple lowlights). Today was about 12C warmer than yesterday, great running weather. I'll run again tomorrow as it is supposed to be above freezing! Though there's a lot of snow on the ground so it will be pretty sloppy out there.

Today was our long run, which is up to 4 miles now... we're going up .25 miles every time. Did two miles and change walking, before and after. Half on pavement and half through the woods. The run felt pretty good, despite me taking a tumble halfway through because of hooking my shoe on a tree root hidden in the leaves. Darned tree roots all over the path, and now that the leaves conceal them it's really treacherous. I have almost tripped several times before but always caught myself. This one, I went down flat, right on my knee and hip. Hip is going to be sore tomorrow!
It was nippy today, it's been in the 50s up until now, but today was about 40. I know all you folks from Coldasheckachusetts are laughing at me for being whiny about the cold in 40 degree weather, but we just started running in August and this is the first time I've needed a long sleeved shirt to run! It's all new experiences for me!9 -

@HonuNui your poor face! Crazy pupper0
-
@RespectTheKitty glad to hear you are making progress back!!0
-
@Elise4270 Congrats on the Garmin... and yeah, you always need to price shop the Groupon deals. I have gotten some killer deals, but most of the time they are not very good.0
-
@skippygirlsmom OOO! Sounds like a solid job lead!1
-
No run today, ran around doing errands and building RTA furniture instead.
Tomorrow is the Turkey Trot! I am doing the Double Gobbler which is a 5k at 8:30, then a 5 miler at 9:15. I plan to try and PR both distances cause I mean it is only 8 miles and there is a huge gap between them.
Supposed to be 28F at 8 am, with a feels like of 22F. Cloudy but no rain forecasted.
Be my first official race with the Garmin 935. Hopefully, I do not trip and trash it or something!5 -
Tomorrow's my first turkey trot 5k. There will be 10,000 people (no exaggeration), construction on the road narrowing 4 lanes to 1, hills, etc. The only reason I'm not completely panicked is because I take anxiety medication. It'll be about 30 F when we start and I'm not sure if I'll need a jacket or if my long sleeved shirt is enough. (My medication makes me warm all the time). Meanwhile we have a snowsuit for the baby and tons of blankets to tuck around him in the stroller. My husband will push him which I trudge along. I mean, I'll dash like a gazelle across the plains.
Why did I think this was a good idea?10 -
11/11 -2.25 mi
11/12 -1.5 mi plus 1 mi jog (didn't count jog) fastest mile yet (but fell apart on last .5 mi)
11/13 -1.5 mi plus 1 hr strength training and 25 min on stationary bike (5.3 mi)
11/14 -1.5 mi plus 1 hr zumba
11/15 - rest day per my trainer (I was completely stir crazy and had to take a 1.4 mi walk)
11/16 - 2 mi plus 1 hr zumba. Fastest 2 miles so far.
11/17 - too cold to run... 30 min stationary bike
11/18 - 1.15 mi on treadmill
11/19 - 1.5 mi treadmill, 20 min elliptical
11/20 - 2 mi plus 1.5 mi walk
11/21 - 2 mi plus 1 mi walk
11/22 - 2 mi treadmill
17.4/35
Holiday eating hit me like a Mack truck tonight. Dinner with the family at an Italian restaurant. I can't believe I ate the whole thing!
@eponine1984 Good luck! You'll do fine. Bonus points for running when you still have a stroller-size baby!

I am SO not clicking on that. Googleitis is a bad thing.
I feel like I need a support group. It's all a bit overwhelming in the midst of this injured hip business. And it seems that men continue to get faster in thier master's years, not women. So poo to that. I love Google. My 10 year old self can ask 1000 questions a day.
I love Google too. I just never believe 90% of the health information out there.
Googlitis is Google-induced hypochondria. It's a real thing. Not saying you have it though. xx I'm sure you need to hunt high and low to find anything relevant to your situation.
Speaking of master's years, I'm reading a great book by Joe Friel (of Training Peaks fame) called "Fast After 50".
The general drift is that your VO2 Max (main indicator of health & fitness) and general fitness stay at optimal levels if you continue to do high intensity workouts in your chosen sport.
I'm impressed by the book's scientific references.
Ya I understand the Google-itis. We definitely need to scrutinize the source. Everybody out there has an opinion.
I may have to check out that book. I'm terrible at reading anything though... Think I'll try to revive my Kindle and look for the book there.
Broaching the subject of menopause and running, anyone have anything to share? Idk what I'm looking for. Just seems I'm suddenly so old. Menopause? Hip issues? Oh gawd, "help I've fallen and can't get up", "where are my teeth deary"..... But it also feels like I'm officially an adult.. so odd.
You and I are like two peas in a pod.
1. I can't remember the last book I finished, though I used to live for reading, and worked in and managed bookshops. Years of being online and a declining attention span made me unable to concentrate on books a few years ago. Web pages, however, I'm reading all sorts of things online all day.
"Fast After 50" is the first book I've tried to read in 3 (?) years. It's THAT interesting to me.
2. Also, yeah WTF is with my cycle? (Apologies for TMI.)
3. And woo yay hooplah on the Fenix 5S!! Which colour? I love my Fenix 5 slate grey with black band.1 -
It's Thursday evening, and I've only run 6 km (on Tuesday) since my 24 km LSR on Sunday.
I *almost* can't feel any niggles at all when I walk! I'd forgotten what that's like.
Running in the morning for sure!3 -

Will be going out early this morning to take part in a charity fun run for the homeless. My daughter is coming along and is going to incorporate this into her C25K training. It will be a brisk 32 degrees which qualifies as frigid for us southern runners. I don’t know how you folks from more northern latitudes run in extremely cold weather, but you have my respect.3 -

And conversely, you southerners regularly running in Misery Indexes of 150+ totally have my respect. (Misery Index = Temperature in degrees Fahrenheit + Dew Point).

Happy Thanksgiving for all us U. S. residents. I'm thankful for my run this morning. I made it 7.2 miles. Had to go a very conservative pace of close to 11 minutes a mile. I think this is my situation for the next 6 weeks. Somehow I don't think pure rest was working but slow running seems better. I just hope I don't have to run slow forever. Not counting calories today.
