I am SO not clicking on that. Googleitis is a bad thing.
I feel like I need a support group. It's all a bit overwhelming in the midst of this injured hip business. And it seems that men continue to get faster in thier master's years, not women. So poo to that. I love Google. My 10 year old self can ask 1000 questions a day.
I love Google too. I just never believe 90% of the health information out there.
Googlitis is Google-induced hypochondria. It's a real thing. Not saying you have it though. xx I'm sure you need to hunt high and low to find anything relevant to your situation.
Speaking of master's years, I'm reading a great book by Joe Friel (of Training Peaks fame) called "Fast After 50".
The general drift is that your VO2 Max (main indicator of health & fitness) and general fitness stay at optimal levels if you continue to do high intensity workouts in your chosen sport.
I'm impressed by the book's scientific references.
Ya I understand the Google-itis. We definitely need to scrutinize the source. Everybody out there has an opinion.
I may have to check out that book. I'm terrible at reading anything though... Think I'll try to revive my Kindle and look for the book there.
Broaching the subject of menopause and running, anyone have anything to share? Idk what I'm looking for. Just seems I'm suddenly so old. Menopause? Hip issues? Oh gawd, "help I've fallen and can't get up", "where are my teeth deary"..... But it also feels like I'm officially an adult.. so odd.
You and I are like two peas in a pod.
1. I can't remember the last book I finished, though I used to live for reading, and worked in and managed bookshops. Years of being online and a declining attention span made me unable to concentrate on books a few years ago. Web pages, however, I'm reading all sorts of things online all day.
"Fast After 50" is the first book I've tried to read in 3 (?) years. It's THAT interesting to me.
2. Also, yeah WTF is with my cycle? (Apologies for TMI.)
3. And woo yay hooplah on the Fenix 5S!! Which colour? I love my Fenix 5 slate grey with black band.
I really wanted the grey bezel. I overanalyze everything. I was detoured by the black bands masculine look... My 620 is white, and would have done white but it shows dirt easily and now has a red/orange band... So I should have just got the grey black and bought new bands. I wanted the grey turquoise one, but it wasn't sapphire. ... DH text me to get the watch after I thought he forgot about our conversation months ago, I mean, he can't remember what I tell him 10 minutes past? I was like a kid trying to hurriedly pick something before I couldn't have it. I hadn't done all my research on the Fenix and remembered @ddmom0811 loving hers, so I wanted to give it a fair shake.
Tl:Dr I got the champagne/suede. Suede (water resistant) seems like an odd choice for an activity watch, but I'll assume Garmin knows what they are doing with that. It does come with another band and is compatible with the quick change ones. So see? I could have just got grey if I'd planned on changing bands! Nut job, I am! I do like the champagne. hell, I'd taken any of them when someone else is paying!
Whew! N.e.u.r.o.t.i.c.
I had problems with speach in the early years, rhotactism. I still revert when I get a migraine or now and then especially in certain language patterns, if an r is followed by an l in the the pwevious word. Anyhow, I think I never developed the love of reading and it gives me a headache. Aldults all be up in my reading buznis and stressin' lil kids out.. haha! I can read web/phone stuff too. But like you said that's all short, and less taxing.
ETA for a laugh. When I was a kids my dad had a squirrel he raised named Mortimer. I thought the squirrels name was Warminer until I was in my late 20's and my mother thought to clarify. Idk. Make since to 7year old me, the squirrel was "warm". DH calls me Warminer when I get goofy.3 -
@PastorVincent love the pumpkin pie.0

Good luck to all the Turkey Trotters and Happy Thanksgiving! We just got a last minute call that our hostess is too sick (she is dying of cancer but wanted to host it one last time) and Thanksgiving is cancelled, so everyone in the family is scrambling to put together a last minute meal. Whew!0
-
My laziness in recovering (and really resting on Tuesday and Wednesday) paid off today. Won a 2nd place AG award at the Gobble Gallop (no pie though!). My 9 year old was also the top finisher under 10. Managed an 8:00 min mile pace which is getting me back to feeling like my fast racing self again! Thankful to both of my physical therapists who’ve gotten me to this point!

Happy Thanksgiving USA friends, and Happy Thursday to international friends!
Today's notes- Should I email my coach if I run more than I told him I would? Joined the UMTR Turkey Trot group run. I had told coach I was running a road 5k, but the chance to hit new single track and introduce my mom to trail running and trail runners was something I could not miss. Ran a leisurely 6.4 miles at 14:22 pace, very easy for me, with 38% of the run in z1 and 62% in z2, so pretty chill.
I was super proud of my mom, she hasn't been running much lately, and has never run single track. Despite falling a few times, she kept at it and got it done. I told her that trail shoes were going to be in her future..... maybe for Christmas???? Anyway, it was a great chance for her to meet some other runners in her area, so hopefully she'll be able to get out more, with the encouragement of other runners!
Have a Runderful Day!

Happy Thanksgiving to all you American contributors! Love the turkey trots! Thanksgiving is kind of a non-holiday in Canada imo- you eat a turkey, the end.
@MNLittleFinn I would probably let him know in case he wants to adjust the rest of your programming for the week around it. Love that you are trying to make a trail junkie out of your mom!

@hjeppley WELL DONE!!! Congrats!1

This turkey trotted! There were 9,965 people in the race today. The fastest runners had already crossed the finish line by the time I got to the start. It was about 30 F outside. The baby (13 months old) was bundled up like the kid from A Christmas Story (I can't put my arms down!) and I was wearing long pants and long sleeves. I had my jacket on for about two minutes before I decided I was way too hot. I had no other pockets to carry my phone for mapmyrun and no watch tracker, so I'm still waiting on my official time. I know I finished about ten minutes before my husband and the stroller. Finishers all get an apple pie, so we collected our pies and got the baby back into the warmth.
Happy Thanksgiving to all the US runners.12 -

Did the 8k turkey trot this morning, at a pretty leisurely waddle. It was a nice run with some friends. The course was cross country, which was interesting but pretty muddy in places. We were in the back of the pack and chatting so we took a bit of an extra detour. Thank goodness they still had pumpkin chocolate chip cookies left when we finished! It was a nicely done little race to benefit the high school sports program, no timing chips or anything fancy, but they did have nice t-shirts in a choice of colors or you could get a pint glass. And there were lots of pilgrims, turkeys, and even Santa was there.
Going to get some wine mulling pretty soon! Enjoy your Thanksgiving, everyone!

@7lenny7 like Dory “just keeping running, just keep running” ha ha
Whoa @JessicaMcB those are some calves. I ran a race behind a woman with calves like that after the race I had to tell her she had some kick *kitten* calves.
@garygse thanks – So I got a call from the “big bosses” executive support person, she hadn’t heard the news on my job yet but called to tell me that she and “big boss” recommended me for a job and if I want it it’s mine. I told her I wanted to hear on the technical job first and she agreed if I could get back into the technie world it was a good idea.
I can’t get into any type of groove on the elliptical I hate the thing
@elise4270 sorry about the pain
@RespectTheKitty It truly hurts my heart to read about the issues you are having finding the right medication to work for you. I think of you all the time and keep you in my prayers. I hope your energy comes back and the side effects go away soon.
Oh my gosh @HonuNui your doggie certainly doesn’t like getting her nails trimmed, I hope that hurts less than it looks. I cut my dog one time, now she won’t let me near her with the trimmer.
@MobyCarp I would definitely need the soundtrack ha ha
@sarahthes you need to post a picture of the new hair do
“Coldasheckachusetts” ha ha @rheddmobile I need to use that word
Thanks @PastorVincent
I’m passed menopause and all I can tell your ladies is good luck ha ha. Speaking of OMG my Skip, she taking a new medicine and I think it’s giving her nose bleeds which is one of the side effects, today before we left for our race she came down the hall with the tampon in her nose, seriously a tampon. She said I had to get dressed and ready to go I didn’t have time to hold a towel that girl.
Yeah no niggles @Orphia
@hjeppley awesome job to you and the family!
Apple pie!! @eponine1984 that’s awesome
I think I forgot to mention in my other post that Skip got 4th in her AG, with a time of like 25 and change, she met up with a friend at mile 1 and they started to talk and didn't realize they were slowing down ha ha. But she had fun and she hasn't seen her friend since she went off to college and enjoyed running with her.9 -

Trotting with the turkeys this morning and freezing our butts off at 34 degrees. I had on a tank top, long sleeve tech shirt, sweatshirt like jacket, gloves, a ear head-warmer thing, and running tights. I still felt like I was dying of hypothermia until mile 3. I am just not made for the cold. Brrrrrrrrr
Happy Thanksgiving to all the US runners. Now, I am off to find pie.

@skippygirlsmom Good luck on the job lead and congrats to you daughter on getting accepted to her college of choice! My husband went through a layoff a few years ago. In hindsight, it was a good thing. Scary for both of us at first. However, he loves his new job a million times more than the old one.
@eponine1984 Sounds like a great Turkey Trot. I saw several people pushing strollers at the one I went to this morning. It looks like so much work pushing a baby up a hill while running! I say you earned at least one extra piece of pie.
@RespectTheKitty I am so glad your doctor listened to you and switched your medication back. I am keeping my fingers crossed that you feel back to normal soon.2 -
BOOM! RACE DAY! W00T!
So got up and checked my weather station. "Feels like 16, air temp 20." Erf. Quick gear change ( basically my Darn Tough wool socks instead of my UA Heat Gear ones, and pack extra warm clothes to change into in case I get wet). Grab gear and go!
No one on the roads, get to race well over an hour ahead of the start. Decide to sit in the warm truck until about 25 minutes before race starts. When we got out of the truck in the garage it was decidedly warmer than I expected. Started to consider leaving a layer behind but did not.
Exit the garage and the wind hit. Okay glad I kept my North Face Wind Barrier. A quick trip to the portapotty just to be sure and then find the starting line. Quick pre-race selfie...
And we have about 15 mins to spare. looking around the starting corral, saw some Pumpkin Pie:
And a Turkey.
There were a bunch of other costumes, including my wife in her Wonder Woman Cape and Tutu:
But I wanted to fight my way to the front of the coral so put the camera away. I found the 8 minute pacers and decided I would start with them and see how I felt. Well as you can all guess it was PACKED at the start. I had to be very aggressive to stay with the pacers for most of the race. The pacers were a bit faster than advertised but I was having no trouble staying with them so I kept my mouth shut.
When they called out that there was a 1/2 mile left, I had plenty in the tank so I picked up the pace and left them behind. Last quarter mile I was well under a 7 min mile, so I had plenty left in the tank. Probably should have run with the 7:30 group... but crossed the line in 24:17 chip time, PR ONE IN THE BANK BABY!
So I walked around a bit, ate a banana, and took off my coat to let the wind cool me down a bit. I started walking back up the course to find my wife to finish with her but noticed the time. 11 MINUTES till the five miler started. ACK! I did not even know where the starting line was. I asked a random person and got lucky, she gave me good directions and I made it to the starting line just as the National Anthem was starting. Well turns out the same 8 min pacers were doing this race, so I saddled up next to them. Figured why not try 8 mins again?
Once again had to be very aggressive to keep with them in the crowd, but I did it. Again, their 8 min pace was more like a 7:50 pace, but I was feeling good so stuck with them. The race was over the same roads as the 5k, with some added of course. That gave me confidence that I could push a bit harder if needed to. We even got to run by the big Christmas Tree in downtown Pittsburgh, so that saves me a future trip to see it.
Again, when the last 1/2 mile was called I pulled away from the pacers and told myself, "Tap that huge reserve you have form marathon training" over and over. Well, guess what? Crossed the line in 39:50 Garmin Time (chip time not up yet), with a 7:46 pace - which means, BACK TO BACK PRs!
Oddly enough, I ran the 5 miler faster than I ran the 5k. So that tells me that future PRs in both distances is reachable.
So Mission Accomplished PR two races for Thanksgiving! Now to go pig out and get fat.

@PastorVincent awesome running!0
-
Ran my 5k turkey trot this morning, and my husband beat me by four seconds. He's still crowing.7
-
Yesterday I did 10 miles. I had to postpone my run until the evening because a. scheduling conflicts b. too hot to run in afternoon. I have found that i DO NOT like running at night. I started around 445. The sun was starting to set. 5.5 miles later it was black out. And while the sidewalk are nicely lit and I live in a pretty safe community I still didnt like it. It felt completely off. I ended up circling by my community gym and doing miles 7-9 on the treadmill knowing Id have a mile left to run home and finish my goal.
4 mile recovery run this morning. There were so many people out in the neighborhood, the HOA couldve organized a Turkey Trot (perhaps I should mention that for next year )
I started tying my shoes with the "lace lock" technique and I really like it. My toes no longer press against the front of my shoes on declines. It feels much more stable. Check it out on youtube
114 of 150 miles this month.
Hope everyone has a great holiday. Im at work and hoping to be out by 7 (its all good as this is one of my least fav holidays.. lol)5 -
@PastorVincent awesome job at your races! very inspiring
@BruinsGal_91 you know youll never hear the end of that!! lol0 -
Thanks for the encouragement @amymoreorless
@PastorVincent woohoo super job two PRs awesome. Loved the pictures. Check box on the Christmas tree ha ha
@BruinsGal_91 I have a feeling I would have loved to see the finish of that race1 -
@bjderhak @skippygirlsmom It was definitely a lot of fun. His strategy of using me as a pacer and then speeding up right at the end worked perfectly. There were 1,700 runners, so my plan of storming ahead so he couldn't keep up didn't work because I was wasting all my energy zipping around other runners. And then at the end he did a fantastic swerve to get past a couple of people, and I couldn't react quickly enough to catch him.
My excuse is I'm still recovering from Saturday's half-marathon. Oh, and next year I'm entering us in a smaller race.6 -

Happy Thanksgiving everyone in the US and congrats/good luck Turkey Trotters! Sounds like some amazing running has been going on today.0
-
@PastorVincent Awesome PRs! Congratulations!0
-
Something I guess that I should have expected, but is odd. Today ran 2 back to back PRs. So was definitely, for me, going pretty hard. Well, oddly enough I did not need water at all for either race and only grabbed couple ounces (1/2 dixie cup) between the races.
I realize a winter race needs less water, but man it used to be I had to stop at every table in a 5k race for water, no matter the weather and today I ran 8 at race pace with essentially no water.
I guess our bodies can get better at water management too?3 -
@PastorVincent just slaying the race day! The guy in the Pumpkin Pi costume had me cry laughing! Please tell me he was like 1st overall, everyone needed to see that on the podium
@skippygirlsmom Me and Skip apparently have the same tendency to talk the race away, haha Congrats to her on her AG placement!
@MNLittleFinn Altras, damn you must love your mom I can't even justify getting me Altras yet lolll1
