SO, I do not want to panic anyone... but during the Turkey Trot I noticed the pacer had a Garmin on each wrist. So I asked and she said that the Fenix 5s gave her all the stats she wanted, but its GPS was horrible and constantly lost track of her, so she kept her older Garmin for pacing runs so that she would be able to monitor her pace better.

I figure she must just have a defective unit right? Is not the Fenix line like the top end for Garmin? Seems like the GPS on it should be rock solid?

Haha! What a goon! For that kinda money? And Garmin's customer service is top notch!

I will be wearing both mine just to check the HR accuracy of my 620, that runs rather high.

ETA.. DCRainmaker makes no mention of a GPS issue with the device.
"... Looking at the above, the Fenix 5 most accurately tracked where I was. The Fenix 3 in second place, and the Spartan Ultra cutting the corners at every opportunity. The Fenix 5 even correctly tracked when I brain-farted and missed the turn at the very southern tip – having to turn back around slightly...."

Yeah, I mean I ran a couple runs with both my Apple Watch and the Garmin 935 to check how well it worked. Had it failed, I would have been on the phone asking for a replacement. Just seemed odd for anyone to just accept "Really expensive device has a warranty but does not work. Oh well, I will just wear two devices."

My Fenix 5 GPS always seems spot-on.

I've run most of the roads in my town and know the distances, and since I started using it in July, I've never noticed anything remiss.

Same with out-of-town events I've done - it's always shown the event distance.

@l_lake Welcome! I'm a brand new runner as well (started late spring) and I've just decided to suck it up and run outside no matter the weather. I'm in Edmonton and so far I've run in -17C for my lowest temperature. I've only done the treadmill once and I hated it. I think I would find it too easy to call it a day early using an indoor track.

My worst weather run was actually tonight as it was above freezing all day and had started to ice up before I got out. I only did 4km instead of a planned 5.

    Hi everyone!
It's my first year running and I want to keep it going through the winter. I've been doing well with continuing to run outside in the colder weather so far, but the ground getting icy makes me nervous. I was looking into my options for the days when it's too icy to run and it looks like there's an indoor track not too far from my house. It's 400m inside a sports dome. There's also a cheapo gym I could sign up with that I could go to for treadmills.

I was just wondering if anyone had an opinion on which would be less boring?

I'm not a huge fan of the treadmill and I've never used one for the distances I've been getting to lately (7-10 km). I think I'll be bored running in place, but I'm not sure if running in a circle 25 times is going to be any better. Haha!

I guess I'm also asking if either is worth it? Or if I should just sit out the days when the ground is too treacherous and do something else instead. Go x-country skiing or skate the canal or something.

For context, I live in Ottawa, Canada. So, once winter truly hits, the sidewalks and trails I run on might never be ice free until March.

@l_lake 400m indoor track? As opposed to 200m? SOLD!!!

The verdict this morning is that I had a bad race yesterday. Can't run. Made a firm decision that I will do no running for at least 3 days. Reported off injured from the paced run for tomorrow morning. I'm thinking the first day I feel like I can run, I should take another rest day anyway.

This could really mess up my racing schedule, but it isn't the first time. Maybe some day I'll learn to back off enough.

@MobyCarp Although RWG seems to be a tradition, maybe if next year presents with similar circumstances, Turkey Trot?

9 miles of trail in the Minnesota River Bottoms yesterday with Kody while my son had basketball practice. Temps were mid 50s F!

About half way through the run my knee started hurting, similar to a meniscus pain. The pain came and went, sometimes making me cringe.

I should take the day off but I'm going to be stupid and try to get 8 miles in today.

Today's notes- Assignment today was 4x1mile Cruise intervals at 7:20 pace. Got up and went for it. Ran my 20 minute warm up, getting in about 2 miles as I had planned. This was a HARD workout for me. Reps 1 & 3 were into the diagonal crosswind and really pushed it. Reps 2 & 4 were with a slight tailwind, but the crosswind aspect of it meant I was always trying to stay on the road instead of getting blown off. Mile splits on the intervals were: 7:17.5
    7:15.2
    7:20.8
    7:18.3

I'm pretty happy with the results, though this was harder than I expected. I was redlining it on the intervals, with average HR in the 180s for the intervals. I walked most of the recovery intervals too, which is unusual for me. All in all though, a good/hard run.

Happy 50th birthday @cburke8909!! Glad things are looking promising for your recovery.

@l_lake I like an indoor track over a treadmill, but also try to go outside in almost any weather if possible. It will probably be possible more than you think. But the indoor track is a very nice break on days when I just can't do it.

Good job @eponine1984 on your first official 5k!

Long run this morning felt better than it has in quite a while. My legs were finally feeling less tight. Maybe the massage and yoga this week helped. I ran with a couple of lovely friends, and our pace was a little slower than usual because one is still recovering from a long rehab, but it was very enjoyable. The weather started out at almost 50 degrees but started getting colder towards the end. I was very happy to be done just as it started to rain. Perfect time to get a latte and head home!

@skippygirlsmom - charity run is an app and you turn it on when you run or cycle and it donates money to the cause you pick. I picked Wounded Warriors. Halfway through my 44 mile ride I realized I hadn't started it today, ugh! Oh well. I turned it on for my one mile run. Here is the link: http://www.charitymiles.org/
I was confused as to where the money is coming from - but it says it is from sponsors. It's probably about .000001 penny per mile or something, IDK. If anyone knows of it and thinks it's a scam, let me know. I came across it when reading the rules for the Running World Holiday Streak - they had a link to it.

Did 44 mile bike ride today. I was feeling pretty tired and weak and am not sure if it's the glute workout I'm doing or what. It can't be the running streak - It's only day 3 for goodness sakes. But so many people felt the same way as me. It wasn't windy at all. But it was super foggy and I had to wonder if we had a brain for riding on the roads in such fog. So we were soaking wet after just 5 miles or so because the fog was so thick. Maybe that's it... we were drenched and it made us heavier.
Got home and did 1 mile run. The first 1/3 mile I was in pain in the calves. But the triathletes have told me that's normal and you have to just run through it. It passed - but I still kept pace very slow.

    11/1 - 4 miles
    11/2 - Strength training - tabatas - push ups/pull ups/sit ups and wall squats
11/3 - rest day and fly to NY!
    11/4 - 4.5 (5K and then a run from daughter’s apt to my hotel)
    11/5 - 5.0 Astoria run
    11/6 - 5.0 Astoria run #2
11/7 - rest day and fly back to Orlando
11/8 - Strength training/Tabatas - added in dips for 5 sets of tabatas.
    11/9 - 4 miles
    11/10 - 4 miles
    11/11 - 44 miles cycling
    11/12 - 5 miles
    11/ 13 - strength training
    11/14 - 4 miles
    11/15 - strength training + 1 mile on treadmill
    11/16 - 4.5 miles
    11/17 - strength training
    11/18 - 4 miles
    11/19 - 40 miserable miles on bike
    11/20 - strength training/glutes - W2A
    11/21 - 5 miles
11/22 - rest day - streak starts tomorrow!
    11/23 - 6 miles — #RWRunStreak day 1
    11/24 - 3.1 miles + glute workout W2B — #RWRunStreak day 2
    11/25 - 44 miles cycling + 1 mile run #RWRunStreak day 3

    I/ITSEC 5K in Orlando - 11/29
    Daytona Beach HM - 2/4/19

@ddmom0811 the charity miles sounds interesting. I’ll have to check it out.
@MobyCarp sorry to hear, hopefully a few days off will make a difference
@elise4270 I hope the MRI shows something easy to repair. I had an MRI arthrogram when they found my torn labrum, I agree with you the laying still for the MRI is the worse part.
@I_lake I’d run the track all day long before the treadmill
    @orphia nice parkrun
    @cburke8909 Happy 50th.
    @eponine1984 that is fantastic!

If anyone knows of it and thinks it's a scam, let me know. I came across it when reading the rules for the Running World Holiday Streak - they had a link to it.

From the web site: "This Challenge Term (ending May 31, 2016), we’ll pay out our sponsorship pool (currently $530,000 and growing) to our charity partners in proportion to the Charity Miles done for each."

Haven't done the Charity Miles thing. If I understand the web site correctly, what they do is get sponsors to donate to charity, then allocate the money in proportion to the miles run/biked/walked for each charity. So technically, you're not raising new money for Wounded Warriors; you're increasing WW's allocation of a pool and the size of the pool doesn't depend on how much you run. Your efforts might give WW $10 more, at the expense of the other charities getting a total of $10 less.

Of course, this assumes that a) I'm correctly interpreting what the web site says, and b) the method hasn't changed since the term described by the web site. The link to terms and conditions is broken. Assuming it's still active and they just haven't been diligent about updating the web site, the real money comes from getting more sponsors. There's a link on the web site to sponsor, but that just pops up a form for information so they can contact you. And it assumes you're a corporation.

I won't be doing Charity Miles, but that's because it requires running an app and I already have enough technology to manage when I run. If I felt strongly about one of their listed charities (and I haven't even seen the complete list), I might be motivated to grab contribution share for whatever charity I felt strongly about.

@skippygirlsmom, I use Charity Miles when I walk the dog. I use to use it all the time for both walking and running when I was part of a challenge group, and it was a good way to keep track of the team miles and have a little competition. Now when I run I just use my Garmin, but to keep track of my miles walking (for my own personal knowledge) I don't use the Garmin because I don't care about it being uploaded as a workout, I just use Charity Miles.
