I had a pretty nice run today. I've gone to the track a few times on Tuesdays to run intervals but decided not to today. My husband is doing c25k and he likes to run at the track. He threw his back out (from an old injury) so he didn't get to run today so I just ran in the neighborhood. I did have to make a few detours to go around some road construction. I can't wait until they are finished.
@skippygirlsmom Congrats to Skip! I believe it will all work out for both of you.

Officially last night of the fall marathon/half marathon training group. We did a base run only, and it was a small group of us, even though the temp turned to be pretty mild. Some of us seem to have started our holiday eating early so needed to burn off a few more calories today (not quite enough, probably). I should not have had that pumpkin muffin at Panera, but it was a free reward! Man, those things have a lot of calories.
Congrats to Skip on her college acceptance, @skippygirlsmom!

Another run in the cold, windy rain. Yuck. At least it wasn’t freezing rain.
Kept getting blinded by the headlights of oncoming cars, causing me to run through puddles that I would have otherwise avoided. Sucky.
One of the nearby chemical plants is having problems, resulting in the eastern skyline being lit up like an eternal sunset. Might have been pretty if it weren’t so freaking unnatural.

Nominal challenge goal: 200 miles
Real goals: Stay healthy. Build base. Prepare for Club Nationals in early December and the start of Boston training in late December.
Today's notes – Saturday it never occurred to me that 18 miles might be excessive; then Sunday I couldn't run at all and had to be really careful with stairs. Yesterday I could have run, but it was pretty clear that doing so would mess me up pretty bad. My body soaked up 10+ hours of sleep Sunday night, which is a good indication that I needed some serious healing/recovery. It soaked up another 10+ hours of sleep last night. And I could go up and down stairs normally today.
So I go to club practice this evening. Arrive a little later than I like, and go do my 2 mile warmup. I can feel the (hip abductor?) spot that is sore while running, but it feels like a training ache. I don't know whether it's minor or will turn into a real injury. Get back to base, and I see the workout posted on the whiteboard:
(Photo courtesy of my being in 7 days of black and white photos challenge on Facebook.)
I look at that and think, I wouldn't be up to that volume at T even if the left knee/hip abductor/whatever it is hadn't acted up. Things being as they are, I think I'll do some easy distance. Hmm, half if I'm racing Thursday, which I am. Maybe that would be about 5 miles.
Then Coach shows up. How you feeling? Ankle's doing as projected, new niggle. What have you done already? 2 mile warmup. Racing Thursday? Yes, the 10K. Why don't you just do another mile or 2 and call it good. Control your pace.
This is why I have a coach. I would have done at least 3 more miles, probably 4 or 5. Given the voice of experience, I went and ran another 2 miles. Did the warmup route in reverse, which seems a little easier; the uphills are longer but less steep in the reverse direction. Still felt the niggle, but it didn't seem to get worse. I was in decent shape when I stretched. The only thing I did wrong was, I didn't really hold to a true easy pace. The weather was perfect, I had just had two consecutive rest days, and the pace came in around MP without my thinking about it. Oops. I think I got away with that, though.
Tomorrow I'll see how I feel and probably run 4 or 5 miles in daylight instead of going for the group run in the evening. Thursday I have a race in the morning. Don't have to run it hard, but I would like to hold to a 7 minute mile or slightly faster average. That's pure vanity; the results don't mean anything. I can't out-run Charlie, who will win first senior; and because winning first senior will take Charlie out of the age group awards, I'm likely to get first in the age group even if I run as slow as an 8 minute pace.
I need to remind myself of that between now and Thursday morning: The results don't mean anything. Have fun. Don't push for a particularly fast time. Get healthy.

@hjeppley I hear you. I think I need a proper rest rest day. After Sunday's 24 km I walked 17,000 steps yesterday and today, including a 6 km run this morning, and my legs are sore. Runalyze says I need 2 days rest, dammit. Not sure how to cope. Whereas Garmin says training as usual. Gaah!
@Orphia Tell me more about how you use your tools. I think I need something like that to prevent me from overdoing it as I ramp up. I don't have a HR monitor on my Garmin, but I do have one on my Fitbit. I've also been looking into a phone app called Welltory which looks promising. According to it, my night's sleep restored both stress and energy levels to a reasonable amount. Butt and hip flexors still really tired today but at least so far not as ravenous. I am going to skip the run this morning and see how I feel by the end of the day. I might give it another day of rest to try to feel more like myself again.
Hi
I use Runalyze to give me different data to the other apps I use such as Garmin, Strava, Stravistix, MapMyRun, Runtastic.
Only Runalyze and Garmin give estimates of recovery times, and they are vastly different. Garmin thinks I'm some sort of elite. Runalyze is more conservative, and seems to know if my legs are tired!
A bit about Runalyze:
https://help.runalyze.com/en/latest/starting-guide/getting-started.html
It's fairly manual. I have to download the GPX file from Strava (which comes from Garmin), then upload it to Runalyze.
But it gives me lovely things like Marathon Shape, Rest Days Needed, Monotony, Training Strain, and a fitness score.0 -
I am SO not clicking on that. Googleitis is a bad thing.
I feel like I need a support group. It's all a bit overwhelming in the midst of this injured hip business. And it seems that men continue to get faster in thier master's years, not women. So poo to that. I love Google. My 10 year old self can ask 1000 questions a day.
I love Google too. I just never believe 90% of the health information out there.
Googlitis is Google-induced hypochondria. It's a real thing. Not saying you have it though. xx I'm sure you need to hunt high and low to find anything relevant to your situation.
Speaking of master's years, I'm reading a great book by Joe Friel (of Training Peaks fame) called "Fast After 50".
The general drift is that your VO2 Max (main indicator of health & fitness) and general fitness stay at optimal levels if you continue to do high intensity workouts in your chosen sport.
I'm impressed by the book's scientific references.2 -
@skippygirlsmom Yay, Skip!
@MobyCarp Yep, 18 miles needs a good rest!
I did 24 km on Sunday (15 miles) and have only run 6 km since then, and still think I need another day off tomorrow. No idea how far to make my long run on Sunday. I'm hoping all this rest will have me raring to go.
1 -
I did Day 2 of stronglifts yesterday. My quads were still sore from Sunday but they felt good while I was doing the squats. Now they're screaming again. It was a little easier to run yesterday after the workout. I started slower than I have in awhile and gradually picked up the pace. Only did 1.5 miles because my in-laws were watching the baby and it was getting late.5

4.5 Elliptical miles. 65 minutes2

I had 9 miles on my training schedule last night but a sense of responsibility, and the fact that I've only had 4 or less hours of sleep each of the two previous nights, made me decide to skip the run and help get the house ready for Thanksgiving.
My daughter came home from college last night and my son comes home from from college this afternoon. It will be great to have a full house again for a few days. Somehow I'll try to make up the miles this weekend without abandoning the family. Both college kids say they want to run with me this weekend, but it remains to be seen if it actually happens.

Today's notes- headed out for my normal 1:00:00 Wednesday run. I really like that the runs are time based, I just go out and don't worry about distance. The only time I really have to think is, if I get back close to the truck and thee's time left. Anyway, it was a nice 6F this morning, so I ended up being over dressed, with a short sleeve tech shirt and fleece under my hooded sweatshirt... oh, well.
First mile was pretty much normal, getting up the ski hill and onto the snowshoe trails. Second mile, as usual, was peaking the hill then my downhill run. Today, instead of turning around right at 2 miles, I finished the decent and turned around at the bottom of the hill. The rest of mile 3 was all uphill slog on loose snow and ice. Mile 4 was fun, it started at the peak and was all downhill. Got to the bottom and still had 5 minutes left, so I jogged along the bottom a little, the loose snow and ice making for more entertaining running.
All in all a good run, with a huge surprise for me. I got in 4.65 miles in 1:00:08, for an average pace of 12:56. This was my first sub-13 pace run. A lot of it was the flat and downhill, but I was still very pleased that the climbs didn't slow me down that much.
Edit to add: At 4 miles in (easiest comparison) I was 4:45 ahead of my time 2 weeks ago.... crazy.
Have a Runderful day everyone!

Ya I understand the Google-itis. We definitely need to scrutinize the source. Everybody out there has an opinion.
I may have to check out that book. I'm terrible at reading anything though... Think I'll try to revive my Kindle and look for the book there.
Broaching the subject of menopause and running, anyone have anything to share? Idk what I'm looking for. Just seems I'm suddenly so old. Menopause? Hip issues? Oh gawd, "help I've fallen and can't get up", "where are my teeth deary"..... But it also feels like I'm officially an adult.. so odd.3 -

@skippygirlsmom A Big congratulations to Skip.
And we still have that white line for the narrow "runners lane" and wide "bike lane" that everyone ignores. I do, I usually stay to the right.
@Stoshew71 they needed to remove that line 2 years ago when they went to the stay right except to pass concept. It's not an issue at the greenway in Madison. Also for the love of God people stop letting your dogs go across the WHOLE greenway on that extended leash. ha ha3 -

I’d like to say I had a planned rest day, but it was a “I’m going to lay down and pet the dog” minute last night that lasted until 5:45 this morning ha ha. Woke up startled and with my clothes on from yesterday.
@katharmonic – thank you. Hey it’s like the law, you cannot pass up the Panera Bread free rewards.
@Ryokat I get that sometimes with headlights too, it’s really annoying you honestly can’t see a thing in front of you even if you are looking down at your feet. Chemical plant with problems, well THAT doesn’t sound too good.
@MobyCarp great pix for the black and white challenge, I did that too. I can honestly say I would have no idea what to do if I saw this board.
Yeah for college kids coming home @7lenny7 My friends are so excited their babies are home too.
@MNLittleFinn nice sub 13 on your run!
@ddmom0811 have fun with the streak! I have overnight to think about it ha ha

Did my love/hate P90X3 workout this morning. It kills me, but I also know it's the area where I need the most improvement. There are a series on long jumps in one of the segments and instead of just doing one pathetic jump after another trying to keep up, I really focused on jumping higher and farther each time and went at my own pace. I did this with a few of the other exercises as well and found out that I actually enjoyed it a lot more.
I also noticed that getting my workout in before walking the pup this morning made a huge difference in my body warmth during our walk. I think some of you were discussing this previously but I was late to the conversation. I am currently pre-menopausal (I think) and am having a wicked time with the cold this year. This has never been much of an issue in the past, but these days I can't even take my coat off when I come in the house because I feel chilled to the core. I hope I can get past this because it's really zapping my motivation for running in the cold, which I normally love to do.
I will be heading out to Pittsburgh to visit mom for the next few days, so not likely keeping up with the thread. i hope all of my fellow Americans have a wonderful Thanksgiving and everyone else has a wonderful weekend too!
@pastorvincent- We used to visit the aviary regularly when I was a child. Some very fond memories. It's such a neat place.4 -

signed for another half yesterday. This one is within driving distance but I've never done it before. Excited to start the Runner's World Streak tomorrow!
Good luck to everyone racing tomorrow!1 -

This was our first time - we were not there 10 minutes before some was telling Kristi (my wife) - "You know you could volunteer and work here..." Kristi is a big fan of birds and I think it was evident. Blindly so.

11/1 - Started month with unplanned rest day. Damn I hate colds!
11/2 - 5 miles on a perfect morning to run (43° F and little wind)
11/3 - Unplanned rest day...can't shake this stupid virus!
11/4 - 5.1 miles.
11/5 - Planned rest day / church, etc.
11/6 - 5.1 miles. A bit chilly for November...wind chill was 19° F.
11/7 - 5 miles. A little warmer today.
11/8 - Overslept and didn't have time to run :-(
11/9 - 5 miles. Wind was brutal.
11/10 - 3.4 miles on treadmill, then upper body weights.
11/11 - 4.7 miles.
11/12 - Rest day.
11/13 - 4.5 miles.
11/14 - 5 miles. Warm enough to run in shorts!!
11/15 - 5.1 miles. Again, shorts and a long-sleeve shirt! It was almost 50° F!
11/16 - 5 miles on treadmill / Trek class, then upper body weights. Trek class kicked my *kitten*!
11/17 - Rest day.
11/18 - 3.4 miles on treadmill. Then upper body weights / abs.
11/19 - 5 windy miles.
11/20 - Woke up with some crazy pain in my right hip / glute. Not sure if I pulled something or what. Took some anti-inflammatory medicine. Hope I just need to rest / stretch.
11/21 - 5 miles @ 45° F! Way warm for November. Apparently hip issue was weird DOMS from yardwork. It was good this morning.
11/22 - 3.4 miles on treadmill. Then upper body weights / abs.

11/22 - 1 mile walk, 3 mile run, 1 mile walk
35F warmed to 40F. I got hot. Grrr. Thin summer capris but the sweatshirt jacket killed me. I don't have a running jacket at the moment and need to get one asap.
I struggled through the whole 3 miles. Breathing was terrible. And tiredness and hunger may have played a part.
Not sure yet but I may do a short run tomorrow morning before thanksgiving at the inlaws.4 -
@greenolivetree At that temperature I like to wear a tank running shirt under a long sleeve shirt with gloves and capris. Usually it's my torso that wants to stay warmer but if I wear something like a jacket it just gets too hot. I'm also a big fan of anything that zips 1/4 or 1/2 in the front, it's like having AC/heater control ha ha
BTW the cross country team gave me a gift card to Academy, those little angels!8
