@PastorVincent - Definitely like up near the front. Probably the best advice I got for my first 5K was to line up at the front. At the time, I had no idea where I stacked up in the running community and figured I'd be somewhere in the middle. A co-worker who ran told me I belonged near the front. I lined up about 3 rows of runners back from the start line, and it worked out well.

Planning to shoot for 7:30 pace. I held 7:50 fine last 5k, and finished with plenty in the tank. I guess I just have to start up with the real runners and try not to get sucked int a 6 minute pace or something. :open_mouth:

    November running total – 118.51

    Nominal challenge goal: 200 miles

Real goals: Stay healthy. Build base. Prepare for Club Nationals in early December and the start of Boston training in late December.

Today's notes – Felt pretty good yesterday. The 2 minute egg-timing jog in my hallway was fine yesterday and this morning. The weather forecast called for showers and rain starting around 4 PM. So I went out to run at noon, with a temperature of 48º F allowing me to wear a single layer long sleeve tech shirt and light gloves. Also wore light tights, but could have got away with shorts. On November 30, you can't ask for better weather.

The plan was an easy 5 miles. Took a route through my neighborhood with opportunities to bail out early; within the first quarter mile I was feeling the hurt spot in my thigh more than I expected. It's not really cold, but neither is it warm; maybe it will warm up? By a mile into the run I admitted that today is too soon to come back. Yes, I could have run another mile. I probably could have run a full 5 miles. But doing so had a high chance of messing me up further. So I stopped running after a mile, about 1000 meters from my driveway.

Felt the hurt leg walking home, but it got better as I walked. Rolled it out when I got home. Noticed that I hadn't even worked up enough sweat to be worth taking a shower. If I'd worn shorts, I wouldn't have even had to change my socks; but the socks had to come off to get the tights off, so I may as well have clean socks.

That closes out November a half mile shy of a number that would mark my post as spam. My current thinking is that I will start December with 3 consecutive rest days. I've already reported off injured from the paced run on Saturday.

For 2017, I've run 1937.62 miles to date. 6 more miles, and I will equal what I ran in 2016. 80 more, and I will have run the year in miles for the first time. I'll get the 6 miles; right now I don't know if I'll get 80 miles in December.

Hard decision today: I am not going to sign up for the Reindeer Run 5K (December 16) until I see how I feel after Club Nationals. I'd rather pay more for a late entry fee than face the temptation of showing up hurt because I paid early.

    @skippygirlsmom - Woo hoo! Congrats!

Here's my amusing story regarding lining up in the wrong spot. Several years ago my husband and I did the Pittsburgh Turkey Trot. There is a 5 mile and a 5K race. I was doing the 5 mile and he the 5k, which is run prior to the 5 mile race. I wanted to run his 5K with him, but the option to sign up for both races was sold out. I decided it would be okay for me to bandit the race since I had officially registered for and paid for the 5 mile race, but I did not want my chip to get picked up by the timing mats, so my plan was to wait for him on the other side of the starting line and join in when he showed up. So I was standing there staring at the starting line from in front of the pack when the gun went off. There was a group of women lined up at the very front. They did not have the look of serious runners as described by @skippygirlsmom' s post, yet everyone around them seemed to fit the description to a tee. As you might have guessed, the gun went off and the women attempted to move at a walking pace. I think they each took about one full step before all three of them were actually trampled to the ground. Fortunately no one was hurt. They all got up and moved to the side and continued walking as streams of runners flew by them. Pretty sure they learned a valuable lessen though on how not to start a race if you intend to walk.

@Elise4270 of course I'd consult all the crazy people to make myself feel less crazy

Thank you for all the advise everyone. While I don't have a bike or pool I do have a rower so I might just grin and bear it on that thing for some time. The x-rays are showing some damage but it has heal so I think I put off going to the doctor long enough that I may be in the clear structurally but the radiologist will have the final say. The words of the nurse was "I won't put you in a boot yet" so at least I have that.

If I can find an in-network orthopedist I will probably going there next.

I had been thinking about getting a pull-up bar for our basement, even before it was brought up earlier on these threads. With gloom & doom in my head regarding my knee I thought I better go ahead and get it. I bought a bodyweight suspension system to go with it as well. Anyone here use one of these?

    Here's the set I bought

If I had enough head room in the basement, I'd love to have that one. I have a doorway mount on the main floor instead. (It looks like the doorway mount bar that firm offers is better than the one I have.)

I haven't used a bodyweight suspension system like that, but what I notice right away is that the bar will let you do narrow grip, wide grip, or neutral grip pull ups. It's good to have that variety.

Congratulations @skippygirlsmom! That's fantastic and I hope it's a great move for you!

I did not run today, so the final total for November remains at 92.2 out of a goal of 90 miles.

For 2017 so far, I have 1081 miles, I looked at the total to see if it would help me come up with some inspiring goal for December, but I've got nothing. Not going to make one of those "run the year" goals I guess :) (LOL, if only I lived back in the 1100's). I am happy thought that this year's total already well exceeds last year's total of 935 mile. In running nerd terms, that means that on average I've run a half marathon more each month this year compared to last year. Woo hoo!

Pretty morning 55F, it was nice until the pit bull. This dog scares me to death after he attacked me, Skip and Macy last year. I went passed the house on my way home (can't avoid the house) and he was outside at first he was behind the wooden fence but he managed to make his way around to the chain link fence and all I could hear in the dark was him growling and trying to get under the fence. I think my next 1/4 mile was at a 5:05 pace. I was standing outside 30 mins later and he was still barking and losing his mind. No doubt if he got out again he would have attacked me. I had my mace but that's crazy, I get dogs bark I'm good with that but he gets in fight mode. A few weeks back I had Macy and he was out trying to get of the fence. I called Skip crying to come and get us. We all have privacy fences so it's even pretty much impossible not to pass their house.

Yuck! I hate passing by houses that have psychotic barking dogs. (Two rottweilers for me) I mean, I know that they’re there but it still scares me almost every time.

@skippygirlsmom Woohoo, congrats on the new job!

@ctlaws44 Fantastic news on your new-found relationship via Strava; I'm seriously happy for ya! Good luck on your training for the Boston attempt...you know you can do this!

    @JessicaMcB That's a great piece; a truly inspiring story!

@_nikkiwolf_ Love the cookies with the googly eyes, lol.

@Azercord Hoping for good news from the radiologist, but I would still err on the side of caution and try to keep running to a minimum while keeping up the cardio work. It sucks, but that's injuries for you.

Am I a jerk if I find that both insensitive and funny as heck? LOL
@Stoshew71 No your not a jerk, I had the same reaction. It would be hilarious if next year a majority of runners
    - moved to the back of the pack - behind the obvious walkers/stroller rollers.
    - Wore the Race Shirt or
    - White or Black hooded sweatshirt - that said "Runners Edge" or some similar wording ( 2 for 1 on that )
    - Eating a pre-race Bagel
    - But the best - Every runner - or at least a big pack came into an aid station and they all stopped for a drink
Hey you need to stop for a good selfie photo. Suddenly had this mental image of Black-White shirts alternating like a checker/chess board pattern.

    Me Bad ???

@skippygirlsmom BaaHumBug on the Pitbull. Woo Hoo on the Job offer.

@eponine1984 Yes it does sneak up on you

@PastorVincent you only need to double your monthly mileage and then add in a 50k ultra to get close to the Run Master @JessicaMcB ‘s. I need to 10x my recent months to get within eye sight of her/your numbers.

@lporter I once ended up in 2nd row when I wanted mid-pack. We walked over to the starting area and I stopped 10 steps back from the line turned around to face the line and everyone kept moving back past me. Of course then I let the speedsters drag me out to fast and tanked at about 7k of a 10k event. No one ran over me at the start. When you are a Mid-packer It is a fine line between to far back or to far forward.
At one of my last events in GP this fall ( 2.5hr drive ) there were only 60 people in the 10k run so it just didn't really matter as the Start line was 50 ft wide and clock start/chip finish. The walkers stayed back so no trampling.

    See you all in December.

    11/23 2.6
    11/26 3.2
    11/28 2.5
    11/30 2.15

    Total 18.3/20

    So. Close.

It was a HPA today and I forced myself to run. I had heavy breathing and some wheezing toward the end. Lungs were hurting but actually running felt good. HPA is through Friday and I hope it doesn't extend to Saturday (but an early morning run will have clearer air).

Kody & I finished the month with a 5 mile run.

The knee felt a bit tender to start, but soon went away. I could feel *somthing* during the rest of the run, but i wouldn't call it pain. Now that I've been sitting for an hour or so, I feel some coming back, but I think some ice and ibuprofen (and this beautiful glass of Bourbon) before bed will help quite a bit.

While I was short of my monthly goal, I hit my trail miles and it was my highest monthly total since April. I'm cautiously optimistic about December.
