marcelyn: Congratulations on the World Series win! I'm a Cubs fan, too, after last year. The team and the fans were amazing.
Sharon: Thanks for your prayers.
Lisa: Travel safely. I hope your new adventure is full of joy.
Heather: Have fun with your yoga friend.
DH & I were just discussing travel plans. I want to go to see DGD when she is out of the hospital, perhaps right after Thanksgiving. DH wants to wait until January when our DS and DDIL's baby is born, and see both of our kids in one trip. I'm not sure how I feel about that length of delay. He is very rigid about travel needs and is picky about cleanliness and having a private bathroom. He would stay with DS and DIL but wants a hotel room to visit with DD. There is some sense in that, but it will likely add $$$$ to the trip and be seen as snobby &/or cold. I'm thinking about visiting DD and DGD on my own after Thanksgiving, and then again with DH in January. Advice welcome.

Struggling with my emotions. Tears right on the cusp of rolling down my face today. Not sure what's going on. I'm hoping it isn't a period of depression which I get every once and a while, even though I'm on anti-depressants. So just going to read posts and ride it out. I'll be thinking of you all even if you don't hear from me. I'll try to at least send a so you know I'm still hanging in there.

Terry ~ Hoping you feel better. This too will pass!0

Katla ~ Sounds like you have a good plan to go after Thanksgiving and in January. Men seem to be very set in their thinking so I can sympathize with your worry.1

Lisa – your moving story reminds me so much of our journey from Indiana to Seattle 40 years ago. DH had his pickup loaded to the gills with a camper shell and he also pulled a teeny travel trailer. My ’68 Ford Galaxie was packed to the gills. We had no idea where we’d end up other than Seattle. No jobs, didn’t know a soul. Sometimes I followed him, sometimes he followed me. That was before the days of cellphones and we actually did get separated once in south Seattle and it took an hour for us to meet up again. Panic! Lol. Anyhow, sorry to hear of the messy roads, but every mile you travel is closer to your destination. Enjoy the visit with your sis and her family. Very proud of Egg being such a good traveler!!
Sharon – thank you for sharing the photo of your dad and how sad that neat car was sold. I don’t blame you for being ticked about your friend sharing your story about the accident. I had a similar situation and I’m still ticked.
Beth - your home gym sounds like a great idea!
Terry – so glad your power is back on but what a nightmare is all I can say. Did you lose everything in your fridge/freezer? Thankful it wasn’t January and below zero temperatures. I bet you’ll get back in your routine in no time and hit Wonderland soon.
Becca – good for you sticking to your new eating plan – it always sounds so yummy and your sharing gives me cooking ideas. Good job at the supermarket!!
Wendy - does horse riding burn a lot of calories? I would think so. I haven't ridden a horse in ages, but I recall it took a lot of muscles and strength to keep balance.
Rita - love your new photo! Way to go on the weight loss and the good buys on your shopping trip. So glad you are back with us!
Katla – so sorry to hear about little Hazel. I think they are making advances all the time in dealing with Juvenile diabetes, but that doesn’t make it any easier. Like you said, hopefully the other grandmother will stop with the sweets. Perhaps the whole family will be a little healthier cooking with less sugar in the house. Maybe it would be good for you to visit right now and do another trip in January with DH to see the new baby if you can afford it. That way you won’t have to worry about DH’s needs while you are out there if you visit soon – if that would work for you.
Heather – have fun at your lunch! You are so young-at-heart and an inspiration!! Good luck on the house re-list. Maybe things will sail right along this time. After years of being in a housing slump, things have really picked up around here. Two houses in our neighborhood had firm offers within a week of being listed.
Congratulations ASTROS!! I agree, Houston needed a nice boost like that.
Made it to my doc appointment yesterday. She didn’t find anything seriously wrong with my throat other than years of sinus problems, dry air, etc. I ordered a hot mist humidifier from amazon for the bedroom and I need to drink a lot more things like warm herbal teas and less coffee. Also she checked the 2 moles on my back and declared them “friendly”. They took blood for CBC, Lipids and she’s testing my thyroid. I didn’t fast so I’m sure the glucose reading will be way above 100 but we are good with that since I check it at home. She’s ordering the DXA scan but I don’t have the appointment day/time yet.
She did mention part of my throat problem might be GERD and did suggest raising the head of the bed 6” – might do it. The pup and I might slide off but if we use bricks, maybe 1 or 2 would do the trick. We can experiment if need be. I told her about the success with Apple Cider Vinegar instead of Nexium and she nodded – she is an Osteopath.
Our docs are in a brand new clinic building built next to the senior housing/assisted living community. Dr. Lisa told me she gets a lot of older “quick clinic” patients from there because folks cannot get into their regular doctors without a few days or week’s wait! So they pay the $60. Their other choice would be to head to Urgent Care on the other side of town which is full of coughing, hacking, noisy creatures (lol) =germ city, and still a wait time. Or the ER which is $$$$.
We had a few minutes to talk about Slow Medicine, and I asked her if she thought the Direct Care model would be a good replacement for the current “Affordable” Health Care. She said it’s a good idea because of the quality of patient care, but it would take a lot more doctors since their clinic only has 1200-1600 regular patients in addition to the walk-in’s. Plus the insurance companies are cut out of the picture so they’d never let Congress OK something like that.
Does anyone here know about Sjogren’s disease? I happened to read about it last night and a light went on. Symptoms include dry eyes, mouth, sinus, etc, pain that comes and goes. Sounds like it’s kind of like Fibromyalgia, which is hard to diagnose and treat.
OK, November goals – keep up with the steps…. I’ve dropped from 8,000 per day average to 6,000 per day in October so want to keep it there at least. Weight was great at the doc’s yesterday so still happy with keeping within the BMI.
Ladies, let’s have a good Thursday!

Lisa Happy Travels!!! It's moving day #2, yay!
Mary
Terry ((Hugs)) Hope the crying is cathartic instead of depression. Sometimes tears happen to me when I am on the brink of admitting something important to myself.
Katla If I were your family, whenever you visited, I would want you to stay wherever you felt most comfortable. There are advantages to staying in a hotel - cleanliness, privacy, control over your sleeping environment - I don't know your family, of course, but I wouldn't be offended. If your husband is cranky about his accommodations, you won't have any fun...I woud definitely go alone to see your daughter and granddaughter after Thanksgiving. You don't want to wait, and you shouldn't have to. Then you and hubby can go together to stay at your son's house later.
Sharon If you want to, I would love to hear the details of your accident. It sounds as if it profoundly affected your life, and ended up causing some changes to be made in your industry so others wouldn't suffer the same fate as you did. I'm sketchy on the details, though, so if you want to elaborate, I'm all ears.

LisaBe safe on the road!
Terry so glad that you got your power back! I was worried about you. How are your relatives in Puerto Rico doing? Will they see power returned to them in 2017?
DJ our challenge here where I am in Texas is to cool the house, we don’t have to worry too much about heat. Our bills during the cold season are about 1/3 of our bills during the warm season. It is very expensive to air condition the home but the gas necessary to heat my home is a small amount. In the summer I try to let the house temperature get up to 85° before I turn the air conditioning on. But my husband gets very disturbed when I do this. Because it takes very long to cool off the house again. I did slowly get him acclimated to leaving the house at 80° this summer. But the bills were still astronomical. And it was very hard on me with the ever present hot flashes.
I love the cooler months, not just for the financial savings. If I get a hot flash I can just walk outside and find very quick relief! We also usually have one or two fires in our fireplace every season. I really look forward to that.
Lenora et. al.I’ve been trying to find a weighted hula hoop at the shops but have had no luck locally! It is good to know about the bruising, because when I finally got one I now know what to expect. It sure looks like a lot of fun, and I think my body shape would make it easier to keep the hula hoop up.
Chris The Cookie Monster costume is my favourite this year! I have a Cookie Monster baseball cap I usually wear when we pass out the trick or treat candy. The toddlers love it and often point and yell cookie! Cookie Monster was always my especial favourite and what a great job on that costume!
Heather I drink Black Sambuca (an anise or licorice flavored liquor). I will have to see if I can find Pastis - anise/fennel/licorice flavor is especially yummy to me, tho none of my family like it, so I enjoy it alone. Usually as a licorice based tea or roasted fennel side dish with dinner.
Congrats to the Astro fans. Die hard Cubs fan here from as long as I remember. My father took me to dozens of Cubs games at Wrigley field in my youth with my younger brothers, this was when the ticket price was comparable to a movie ticket price, not expensive like they are these days.
I slept in today, and my cuddly cat decided to crawl in on my lap so I’m trying not to move. A hot flash will engulf me soon enough and I’ll have to unseat him, but for now the warm purring fur body is too sweet a feeling to disturb.
It has been a busy week, and a pretty big adjustment as I was moved to close to my regular work schedule. I’m nackered each night when i get home and miss spending the evenings with my husband - even if he mostly spent those two hours playing video games while I read usually. We will adjust, of course, but it is still disconcerting at the moment.
Becca, I tried to find out how to donate the candy to the local food bank, but they don’t accept community donations AT ALL! Oh, they will accept if a preplanned organized food drive was underway, ( and business donors are always welcome) but otherwise they don’t take food!! MiL church also rejected. The next county over food bank is too far for me since I don’t drive, so it is looking like the only option I’m left with is keeping or trashing! My mother (depression raised) taught me better than to discard food, but I’m torn.
Today is my second fasting day this week. My minestrone is a very good fast day meal, so I’m on a soup kick and I’m thinking of making pea soup tomorrow. I don’t have any Ham in the house tho.
We bought three unfinished dressers at a going out of business sale earlier this year, but the garage was too hot to finish them. Hubby started the project last night, so I know what I’ll be up to the next weeks, staining and applying poly to the dressers.
I sign off with one of my very favourite photos of me. I found it amongst some of my mothers things this year. About 50 years ago, the young cubs fan and her younger brother.

(((Terry))) November blues? Here in MN. November tends to be cloudy and gets dark early because of daylight saving time. Also the cold weather starts. DH has a hard time with this time of year. Mixed for me.
Lisa safe travels.
Katla I would make first trip on your own. Less stress without DH. Second trip let DH do it his way as much as possible but stand by what is important to you. I had to do this on recent trip. It was important to me to spend time with great niece. We spent time reading and drawing outside. It was absolutely delightful. I did invite DH to join us in the drawing time. He stayed inside with other relatives. He later complained I abandoned him to the other relatives. I said next time he could just stay back at the hotel if that is how he felt. The time I spent with great niece was non-negotiable.

I'm here. I've been reading/scanning but not able to respond much. I'm pulling for you, Terry. I've been there. Be kind and patient with yourself.
Regarding October goals:
I didn't log enough running miles last month, nor am I yet able to do the crow pose. But my yoga is getting better, and I have been practicing steps to get to crow. I need more upper body strength/balance.
I have followed through with weight training, however. I take a weight training/strength class twice a week, so I have built in accountability. I can see a big difference already.
One of the differences I wasn't expecting was in my running. October was a crazy month. Terribly busy and stressful at work, then hubby got sent away for 10 days to eastern Europe, and there was all kinds of stress related to that. I wasn't able to run/walk or hike much. But last night, I ran/walked on the treadmill for 26 minutes (I was with my 11 year old, and that was his limit), and the running was easy. My breath was relaxed (thank you, yoga), my legs felt strong (thank you strength), and my hips felt amazing (thank you cortisone shot). I was quite surprised. I was able to run faster than I could a month ago -- without running much. Not what I was expecting.
Goals for this month. The first four are same/similar to October's goals:- Log every day
- Strength training twice a week
- Run 2-3 times a week
- Build up to Crow pose
- Build up to a pull up/chin up, just one would be amazing. It may take me all year!
Miss you all. I've been wondering about Josephine. I haven't seen her recently.

Katla - I think your idea of a quick visit on your own is a good one. Your DH seems well enough at the moment to be left. Didn't you take him to his sister's last time?
I much prefer to stay in a hotel if possible. I do that when visiting my son in Nottingham and we do that sometimes at Hove, especially if it's more than one night. I treat it as a mini holiday and if any one minds they get over it soon enough. I just tell them I LOVE hotels. I have to be really comfortable in someone's house, with enough space etc. to be happy there. I don't sleep well if I'm cramped. Most people's beds are tiny for two people compared to our giant one at home. Even in a hotel, unless it's a very expensive one with a huge bed, I much prefer twins, like we have on our cruise.
Our lunch went delightfully and I had mussels, and salt and pepper prawns with spinach. Two starter portions. One glass of rosé wine. I ignored the gorgeous looking bread. with an olive oil dip.
Lovely to be picked up and brought home. I also took my two favourite necklaces to the repair shop. And found my salted black beans and frozen dim sum. So a good trip.
Came home to find the photographer had been ages in the house and the estate agent had told DH his whole life story! ! ! I hope they got some good pics. DH thought it was a much more professional job than last time. The estate agent has Crohn's disease.
Going to heat up the remaining pigs' cheeks stew for dinner, with brussels sprouts.
Got another lunch out on Saturday with my Portsmouth friend down in Portsmouth. But it's a fish restaurant and I usually have oysters, so not fattening. Phew!
Much love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxx3 -
I made the mistake of sending my DH to Walmart today. He came home with two huge bags of candy. Said he had to do it because it was half off. Ugh! Only good thing is that I am not a candy person so unless I lose it, I won't indulge.

Lanette - Sjogren's syndrome doesn't seem to have a cure or specific treatment, so you can only treat the symptoms anyway. You could have a blood test I suppose. Sometimes it helps a lot to give a name to something.
Rye - You can buy Pernod or Ricard anywhere. I like those well enough. The one we buy is Henri Baudouin, which is only available from a few suppliers. You drink it with lots of cold water as it is very strong. You can buy non alcoholic pastis. I haven't tried it, but the reviews are good. I used to only drink pastis when in France, but then thought "Why?". It is now our default alcoholic drink.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx3 -
Rye, wow that's crazy about them not accepting community donations!! I suppose you could give to a local childcare center, with directions to use in the children's Christmas stockings only. Like to give to just the parents. Or like you said you could trash it. Or save it for a Christmas project of stiff white frosting and either cardboard or cookies, and make gingerbread like houses. I made a most gorgeous one using M & M's for shingles!

Lanette asked Wendy - does horse riding burn a lot of calories? I would think so. I haven't ridden a horse in ages, but I recall it took a lot of muscles and strength to keep balance.
The actual riding does use abs and back muscles for balance, thighs if you are rising up and down or standing in the stirrups, arms if you are pulling/holding the reins in. Galloping is the best exercise, burns a lot more than just walking. But I actually think the benefit of horses is the other 23 hours of the day when you are NOT riding. That is when you are lugging a 30 pound western saddle from the barn to the horse float, lifting that heavy saddle up on a 15hand horse, lifting the heavy wooden ramp up and down to shut the horses in the float, grooming mud from their coats, trimming their hooves (A full trim burns a pound off me I believe!), carrying buckets of water to the pens, wheelbarrowing piles of poop out of their pens, picking extra grass for them from the hedge areas/roadside, moving the electric fence daily-a bit of a hike, mixing up feeds and supplements for them, loading and unloading bales of hay and taking it out to them daily, oiling saddles and bridles, harrowing paddocks, lunging young horses for training and building up muscles...Oh the list could go on all day! If I didn't have horses I'd weight 30 pounds more! Just about to head out to start the days feeds...
I am feeling Very Happy this morning as I managed a fast day yesterday and the scales showed me 128.3 this morning. I am going to try another fast today so that I am able to fit into my favourite shorts to wear to Vanuatu. I have been stressed about money, but yesterday I realised that we get three paydays in November, which will cover all the bills I was worrying over. Thank you GOD! So I went ahead and booked a cabin to stay in at a holiday park with thermal pools for my half-marathon on Nov 26th, and I bought myself some "reef shoes" for walking in the ocean at Vanuatu-my big hope is to go kayaking there, and also a pair of comfi white sandels to wear the rest of the time when sightseeing etc.
Terry I occasionally get down days, and I am sure it is from hormonal fluctuations. I take a St Johns Wort pill and rub some magenesium oil in, or take an epsom salt bath and I use my natural progesterone cream. This seems to help a lot. Or drink a bottle of wine. That helps too! LOL

Our leftover candy usually gets taken to one of our workplaces, where it disappears in a matter of hours.

Today is gray skies and rain off and on. Typical coastal weather. Still holding at 242 lbs weight wise. I had some Greek yogurt with a sprinkling of walnut pieces, a slice of 12 grain bread with 1 TBS of peanut butter. Came to 520 calories, 24 fats, and 32 proteins! That all with coffee and I am quite satisfied!
Thinking on just some grapefruit segments for lunch and dinner I have some lasagna noodles I didn't use. Thinking of creating a beef base, steaming a tilapia fish fillet, and taking a bit of a lasagna noodle and slicing thinly into " noodles". Putting a bit of fresh spinach and my seaweed seasoning plus a blob of wasabi in it! Will learn to portion all this! If you use too much spinach the beef base looks green. I shall take a pic of this. I might make this for lunch, then have grapefruit for dinner!!! I made myself hungry!!!
Missing my Nuke son. I wish he would connect with me. I know he is busy with school. The last time I talked with him, he still had pneumonia. I sent him a box of brownies, chocolate cookies and some peanut butter cups. Still nothing. Not that I used that box as bait to contact, but I kinda did!
Take care all!

That's a good idea. Also, places like the police department, sheriff's office, public works, county commissioners and even manufacturing plants or large offices..... anyplace that has a "candy dish" or a break room sometimes welcomes this nasty stuff, lol.

Becca - Do you remember when your DH was in the Navy? I would think that after boot camp (basic training) and then being 'sick' he is probably like a one legged man in an @$$$-kicking contest. He's got to catch up and you also have to 'give him to God' to keep him safe. My DYS 'rarely' calls me. Whenever he does, it is in the middle of the day. I think he is checking up on me to make sure I am doing well. He calls his Dad and brother a lot more than me. It's a 'man thing'. But, I don't worry about him because I know that Tami and Mallory keeps out an eye for him. He's got great friends and bosses, so I rarely worry about him. Louis worries more about him than I do and I worry more about our DOS who lives next door to us.

It's Men Make Dinner Day!
Woohoo! Or maybe it depends on which man we're talking about. Philip is taking me out tonight instead.
Becca - Ooh, sounds like you'll be eating well after your shopping trip! Philip is also a big fan of Hungry Man dinners... he buys the pork rib a lot. Yuck.
Lenora - We don't have a dishwasher so I wash by hand anyway. But it sure is a nice convenience to have! I've learned to wear rubber gloves to keep my nails from getting saturated while I'm washing dishes.
Fanncy - We're in the same boat. With what we'd save in a year of premiums for the health insurance that doesn't do us much good anyway, we could cover a whole lot of ground toward other priorities (including the screening tests we've been putting off). The health sharing plans I've found so far are less than half what we've been paying though, so that may end up being a good option if they'll take us. The one I've talked to so far will charge us extra and put me on a provisional plan until I work with their health coach to get within their height and weight limits. Could be a motivator or could just trigger my contrarian tendency, I'm not sure which. But I'm embarrassed that it's an issue.
Kim - I've been reading the standards of belief for the health sharing ministries. We're not religious either, but Philip and I talked about it and most of the principles are basically compatible with our spiritual philosphy so we'd feel OK agreeing to them. Different name for what I believe is the same thing, basically. One of the plans I'm looking at is a Mennonite-based plan. From what I've read, it's important to carefully read and understand what the plan covers since they're not all alike.
Lisa - When we moved to Oklahoma from New Mexico it was like a traveling circus. Me in an ancient 25-foot RV with three huge dogs, three cats, two parrots, and a tank of fish. Philip behind with the SUV and a loaded trailer. It was a relief to finally get where we were going!
Terry - Sending good vibes your way. Take good care, feel what you need to feel, and be kind to yourself today!
I'm watching the calorie count very closely today since we're going out tonight. I'm not going to worry too much about one day, but at least this way I'll have a little more to work with by dinnertime.
-Yvonne in TX1 -
Terry - Sending great big (((HUGS))) I spent a lot of my life in depression. Horrible. Nowdays it usually means, like Karen said, that there is something amiss that is burbling away that I don't want to look at. It is often, for me, not doing my writing, or avoiding some problem. I hope you can descend into yourself and work out what is lurking. We use a lot of energy avoiding the obvious.
