I had a great run today. But i must be the biggest wimp on here. It was only 54°F, but I was cold the whole run. I just wore a t-shirt and Capri pants. I thought that woukd be enough, but I was really wishing I had worn a jacket and gloves. I probably would have taken rhem off toward the end of rhe run, but i spent. Lot of the run wishing I had them. I've said it before, but I do not know how some of you run in ice and snow and negative degrees.

@jessicamcb It has already been said, but wow! I am on awe of your 100 mile run.

@katharmonic Sounds like some wonderful runs on your trip!

@girlinahat the burpee pull up was burpee (with a push-up kind) by a cage, jump up from the burpee, grab the pull-up bar, do a pull-up. People are nuts. Your workout sounds pretty crazy too. And I was over here complaining about squats and other kinds of squats, although my legs took up the complaining for me today.

@Stoshew71 wow... this is why I love this group...

we hit everywhere from Krebs cycle and atp to “I like donuts” and everywhere in between

Also, I actually did some runningish thing today. I can apparently still do 30minutes sustained.... was at 4mph but that is beside the point. I can still do it!!!
    2.25=3.25 for the month.

    I miss donuts... :disappointed:

This isn't running related but we are affected by the wildlifes in southern California. We've had to evacuate to family up north.
Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

    QUESTION:

Maybe it is just cause I am fat, old and slow... but when I have to take a bunch of days OFF in a row, the first run back is like stiff and more painful. Is that normal?

Depends on how long a bunch is and the reason for the lay off.

Reason: Life comes at you fast and steals your time to run
    Bunch: This case.. 3.

Normally I feel awesome running after that type of lay off.... but then again, running is my ONLY stress relief, so getting back to it is always a joy, so I don't notice aches or pains or stiffness.

@Orphia 6:08/km.... I need to start posting everything in Mi and Km.....

I would REALLY appreciate that! I try to do the same for you all when I'm leisurely on my PC.

I tend to feel guilty all the time because I just automatically think you're all so slow when I see your times  , but really lots of you are very speedy.

While I'm here, a photo from today's rest day walk.

Wow! I love this picture. It would look great framed and over someone's fireplace mantel in the living room.

I think that my tally for the month is 8.65 miles.

So I am still at 8.65 miles.

I sprained my ankle on Sunday. So I am trying to do the right thing...ice, rest, elevation....rest! I didn't even do it running. No I was recovering from working the previous night shift and watching the Colts vs the Bills...a real nail biter game in the snow. It went into overtime and I guess that my left leg went numb. When I got up, I didn't realize that my leg was numb and it buckled. This is the third sprain of this ankle. The first sprain was really terrible in 2003 and it occurred when I missed a step going into the basement. The second time occurred in the hospital when my left foot tangled into a curly phone line...it wrapped around my foot and nearly tripped me.

Does anyone know of any ankle strengthening exercises? I may test my leg tomorrow...the swelling is nearly gone.

@ereck44 - sorry about your ankle. I'm rereading
    https://www.amazon.com/Ready-Run-Unlocking-Potential-Naturally/dp/1628600098
and there are a lot of ankle exercises/strengthening in there. The author has some strange ideas... as usual I take what I like and ignore the rest. For example, he's against icing injuries. And he is into the minimalist shoes and I have the 12mm drop or whatever it is. I'm sure the experts on here know exercises to do!

@bashincenters - praying for all of southern California and your families.

@jessicamcb - I'm sure you know this already, but as a teacher and mom, have to say... could be a concussion. These days at the high school where I teach we have kids out with concussions all the time.

Recent research has found icing injuries provides no benefit and slows healing.

2nd rest day in a row. Not injured just a little lazy and worried. We got significant rain yesterday and a big drop in temperature so there was a warning about icy conditions. I had stayed up too late Monday watching the Patriots play their worst game of the season, so some extra rest was in order. Committed to an eight miler for Thursday and 10 plus on Saturday.

@ereck44 one of the easiest exercises you can do to strengthen your ankle is to stand on one foot. You can do it in the kitchen while you cook, in the bathroom while you brush your teeth, in line at the store. In public I'll do it but just keep the up foot just a half inch or so above the floor so strangers don't give me strange looks (not that I really care but my wife does). Keeping your balance when doing this will do a great job strengthening your support muscles. Somewhere I read that that simple exercise has been shown to reduce ankle sprains by 50% in athletes.

LOL - I grew up with miles and miles of trails I ran and played on, but honestly, smooth ice on a sidewalk with 15% grade? You end up running place looking for traction. Many places I just ran on the salted street, or any no paved/concreated place I could.
@PastorVincent I would choose a salted street over a sidewalk every single time as long as it was a safe street to run on. Even in the summer I'll always run on streets before sidewalks, but especially so in the winter. Thankfully most of the roads around here are residential and runable year round.

I try to stay on sidewalks because my level of trust of people hurling along in 2-ton metal cages is not very high. :)

December goal: Keep kicking at Zumbro training
Nominal mileage goal: Let's say 120?? I really don't know. Going for like 70% trail

    12/1- 7.2
    12/2- 8.2
    12/3- 9.5
    12/4- 5.8
    12/5- REST
    12/6- 6.5
    12/7- REST
    12/8- 8.4ish
    12/9- 9.1
    12/10- 6.6
    12/11- REST
    12/12- 4.1
    12/13- 6.6

    Total: 72.0

Today's notes: 6.6 road miles with 2 inches of fresh snow. The snow always slows things down and/or makes for a harder workout. Wasn't too slow today, the 6.6 was done in 1:00:04, for an average pace of 9:04. Hr was a bit High at 155 average, but that's the trade off. Run felt OK. Still feeling a bit lazy at times, with the lower mileage, but my coach says I'm doing well, so I'll go with that. I FEEL good, and the extra recovery time each week does seem to help me make gains, so I'll take it.

    2018 races
    3/28- END-SURE 50k
4/13- Zumbro Endurance Race 100 Mile
    5/19- Superior Trail 25k (Lottery)
    7/8- Afton 50k???
9/8- Superior Trail 50 mile (Lottery)
    10/xx Wild Duluth 50k? 100k?

@PastorVincent I'd still take roads. With the trucks coming from the mines and logging areas, big vehicles are a hazard, but I'll risk that over an icy sidewalk... For that matter, I don't even run on the sidewalks in the summer... I just like the road better..... well, better than sidewalk, Trail is where my heart is and will always be.

@hjeppley- Those photos are priceless! You look like a total badass in the second one. Good luck with the PT today. It sounds like you and I are in a similar place training wise. I am trying to heal a lingering hamstring injury. Not bad enough to keep me from running, but it could definitely benefit from some rest. So current prescription is reduced mileage, strength training and lots of yoga. I am also trying to focus on agility training as well in hopes that it will benefit me down the road. I am finally starting to see some progress in all of these areas. Marathon training starts in January.

@Orphia- Yet another stellar run photo. Surely I can't be the only one that is jealous of your runs!

    @HonuNui - I <3 your ornament

@PastorVincent - I agree with @MNLittleFinn on staying off the sidewalks. IMO, they are more dangerous than the road, as long as you are running towards traffic. Also, regarding the frozen hands, I have mentioned here numerous times that I have pretty bad Reynaud's syndrome, so I am always wearing gloves. When temps dip below 20, I usually put a couple of hand warmers in my gloves. They work like a charm. I just remove them if my hands get too warm. I also know some folks that put them in their shoes, but I have not been brave enough to try this.

@JessicaMcB -Hope your little one is okay!

Y'all must have better drivers than we do. In the past week, TWO of my friends were clipped by cars. :(

RE: Hand warmers... that is a good idea. I have earned $10 reward form the Dicks Sporting Goods app for all my running, so might go get some on their dime. :)

That's a bummer for your wife, especially living in Minnesota. I am sure she struggles greatly. Mine aren't quite that bad. My finger tips turn white and the base of my fingers turn reddish purple. They burn like a motha. Mittens seem to work better than gloves for me.

Nope, I just run when there's nobody out. Some drivers actually swerve at runners, so it's always an issue.

I wonder if I have some flavor of that. Running in single digits most of my body was comfortable, but within minutes - even wearing gloves - my fingers were cold enough to hurt. I end up taking them out of the fingers and making fists inside the gloves which helps some. Or makes them numb. Not sure which
