I like Alfie; since he started as Alfalfa. I could just see you waking up and singing to him "What's it all about, Alfie?"

Allie - I vote for Alfie. I think it would be less confusing for him and it's a nice friendly name. :D<3

KJ - Yes, things do change. And it's so important to embrace it. DH and I have spent a lot of Christmases on our own, with socialising on other days around it, and we have always enjoyed the peace and quiet and having food we love and don't normally treat ourselves to. It has to be easy food though.
This year DDIL has invited us to Hove and we will try to get there by 10.30 to relieve them. We will stay the one night. My son is the cook and a very good one, but there is a limit to his concentration when you have 3 kids under 6. I am taking a homemade Christmas pudding, bread sauce, brandy butter and a chocolate roulade instead of Christmas cake. I would love to do more, but he's happy with that. The important thing is to get there as early as we can. :o:o:o DDIL is having an operation on the 18th to repair an umbilical hernia, so she will be very limited as to what she can do. No lifting Bea up! :noway: So basically it's all down to my son and this is his busiest time of the year. (He is in the brewing and pub trade) I know it will be chaos, but I can manage for one day - I hope. My lovely DH is the most important asset in all this. <3

Here I am delaying doing my memoir. Oooops!

Machka- Your Christmas dinner at the hotel sounds wonderful! I hope you enjoy it! This Christmas season, I have been thinking a lot about making a change in our Christmas celebrations. With DD and her family in Texas at that time (she doesn't get enough time off during the season to come up here), and our DOS celebrating with his mom each year, and DH's family gets together on a weekend day before or after Christmas each year. It just makes for a very quiet day. I will probably keep doing Christmas the way we are for a few more years (until DYS is on his own for the holidays). Hard to let go of traditions; but if the kids are all gone...???

I think this is the first time I've ever gone out to a restaurant for Christmas dinner. I know we've travelled at Christmas, but for example, last year, on the spur of the moment about 3 days before Christmas, we decided to travel to the other side of Tasmania. So we threw everything into the van, including cooking equipment, and everything for a Christmas dinner for two, and headed off to a small cabin on a bay over there. And we put together Christmas dinner in the little cabin with the little bitty oven. :D It was actually a bit of fun ... and it was lovely over there!

But for some reason, I've always equated eating Christmas dinner in a restaurant with the TV shows where things don't go according to plan on Christmas day, and the family ends up in a really sad restaurant with disgruntled staff, eating chicken fingers or something.

However, I thought I'd ask around if any places do a nice Christmas dinner and was so pleased to find that some places actually do! I hope it is nice because it might end up being the new thing we do ... but at the moment it just seems to be incredibly convenient. Takes all kinds of pressure off. :)

Today, Friday, my husband and I both had very long busy days at work, although his was about 3 hours longer than mine! Since I was off earlier than he was, I had the time to go to the first Carol's Service of the season. :) I've been going to this one for the past 4 years and I enjoy it. My husband has accompanied me for 2 of those years, and was hoping to come with me today, but he had too much work to do ... and in fact, will be putting in a full day tomorrow (Saturday) as well.

Then I went down to the local oval and ran 2.2 km! Round and round and round ...

I struggled running 1.2 km yesterday because I had difficulty breathing. But during the run, it occurred to me that my asthma was acting up (I was squeaking when I was breathing), so today I used my inhaler before I went out and it was better. This year has been really bad for hay fever, and I'm guessing running around a grass oval with trees surrounding might be affecting me.

I'm still not loving running, but I'm thinking it might give me more "bang for my buck" than walking and possibly also than cycling. It might also help me improve my cardiovascular system. Maybe less huffing and puffing cycling up hills.

:)Allie, When we got our rescue dog last year, her name was Bess. She was named by the person who made a huge financial contribution for her immunizations and other care. We wanted to keep the name in honor of the person who helped save her life, but in no time at all I was calling her Bessie because two syllable pet names feel more comfortable for me to say. I vote for "Alfie"....close to the old name but two syllables rather that one or three.

:)Machka, we go to our favorite Chinese restaurant for dinner on Christmas.

Now that is something we just do not have here ... a "favourite" Chinese restaurant. :( I used to love Chinese food, or at least Canadian-ised Chinese food, and if we were still in Canada, I could see going to our favourite Chinese restaurant on Christmas Day because no doubt we would have one.

But here in Australia ... we've tried several and they're all a bit ick. One of the issues for me is that I'm not at all used to the way they do chicken here. I like my chicken breast to be white and flaky, even if it is in almond chicken, or lemon chicken or in pieces in other dishes. When chicken looks partially cooked and rubbery and gristly and fatty ... just ... no. And everything cooked in a strong fish sauce seems to be really popular too.

We've switched to Indian food and I really like that. In fact, we'll quite likely do Indian food for Christmas Eve. :)

Allie and Alfie has a nice ring to it!!!! I'm sure he'll be a great little guy - poodle mixes are super smart. Our schnoodle inherited the longer poodle legs and curly hair but has a lot of schnauzer features. Our schnauzer pup is doing really well but has a long way to go to be the great dog Sophie is. They add such joy to our lives and I think the rescues are extra appreciative of going to be with loving owners.

Machka - your restaurant Christmas dinner sounds so good!! Best part is - no dishes and eating leftovers for a week. Sounds like you are getting super busy with the new responsibilities but I know you'll tackle them with ease. Good luck with the running and glad you have an inhaler. Hay fever - yuk!

Betty - don't get discouraged with the cholesterol numbers. Seems like different docs interpret them differently. My DH's total cholesterol is quite high - he does not eat a good diet and has very little exercise (it's often hard for him to digest many of the good high fiber foods like fresh fruit and veggies, plus with RA his mobility is limited). BUT his doc looked at the HDL numbers, which for DH were quite good. And there's a ratio which for him shows the good outweighing the bad. Yes, he's at risk for heart problems, but he also has smoked for many years and if he does have a heart attack, that's a contributing factor as well.

We found it interesting to get a copies of our lipids lab results which showed the HDL, LDL, that ratio, and Triglycerides. DH's previous doctor just concentrated on the total number and was adamant he take the statins which caused him so much muscle pain, so it was a relief when DH's new doc looked at the ratio and gave him some hope, really. Gentle encouragement to eat better but not all is lost if his numbers remain in the 210-220 range, considering his other health factors.

I will say when DH was able to increase his fiber - eating some cooked beans or a peeled apple several times a week, his labs definitely were better. And it appears oatmeal/oat bran still is a good addition and helps folks (DH won't eat it, sigh). I try to make ham and bean soup or a nice bean salad several times a week. Even if he just eats half a cup, I think it's a little step in the right direction. We do what we can. I'm a bean lover from way back and am perfectly satisfied to open a can of beans, take a spoon and eat them right there! I love the different flavors and textures just as they are. Weird since we rarely ate cooked beans as a child... my mom would open a can of pork and beans and no one would touch them, lol. I must have been a hobo or cowboy in a previous life. B) I digest them better than the "Blazing Saddles" cowboys did and I am grateful!! So is DH!

Kelly - loved the Joaquin pictures. It will be fun to see the Santa pictures as the years go by. Poor Santa, lol. Not really! I'm sure Joaquin will be well-behaved! Ah, shoveling snow...that brings back memories. Glad you have a helper in that department!

Barbara in OR - my workout room was almost 50 by the time I went out there yesterday after lunch. WHEW! I do dress in layers and generally peel off a few by the time I'm done, so it was perfect.

Heather - your Christmas in Hove sounds great. Hope DDIL's surgery is easy and her recovery quick. Glad your voucher showed up and hope it prints OK.

DrKatiebug - that ornament is very special! Do you recall where it came from - did someone give it to you?

Becca- and look at your ornaments! How wonderful! Won't be long now until you'll be spending time with all your boys! Hope Owain's ankles are getting stronger.

I am blown away by all of the meaningful ornaments you all have hanging on your trees. Many of them have special stories, I'm sure, and great memories. Even though we don't have a tree up, I do have a funny ornament - will try to get a photo of it today and post it.

Not so chilly this morning - low of 28.

Texans - you are getting your Christmas snow early! Cheri - so sorry you got the crud, hope you and DH are feeling better!

    Happy Friday!!!

Good morning ladies. I had a rewarding weigh-in this morning. I know that if I eat within cals, get my exercise in and drink my water, the scale should go down. However, sometimes it surprises me with a little bump that it demoralizing. I really need to learn to not let it have power over me.

All of my glass came in and it was packed in a TON of bubble wrap. I loaded all the bubble wrap back in the box and was trying to compress it. I tried standing/jumping on it and nothing was happening. It was sturdy stuff. I told my husband that the stupid stuff should be popping with a fat girl jumping on it. He laughed and said you're not a fat girl anymore. I still see myself as obese, my self vision hasn't really caught up with me being in a normal range.

Busy weekend planned. We have our neighborhood party Saturday night where I will take a big green salad. My hubs is smoking a ham from a wild hog and a backstrap (I think that's right) from a deer that one of our friends are providing. It's his first time, so we'll see how the turn out. Sunday we are meeting friends for lunch in Hamilton. It is about 1/2 way between our houses.

I finally settled on a gift for my SIL that lost her husband last month. It's been difficult because she has the money to buy what she wants. Normally she wants Tupperware, she never had any before I started buying her some each year. This year I am going with a pair of Ugg tennis shoes that she has commented on many times in the past that she likes of mine. She can return them easily through Zappo's and get something else if they don't fit or she doesn't want them.

Hugs to those that need them. Congrats and a pat on the back to those with victories.

Okie in the TX Hill Country (where it snowed yesterday and is in the 20's, brrr!)

Karen - Many congratulations on the coming baby boy. Lovely - one of each!
Today my wig arrived for the singalong. I am going as an Austrian damsel in a dirndl dress, white stockings and blonde plaits! The wig is bright yellow with bows. :D Most people go as nuns, but I didn't fancy that. If I get too hot I'll just take the wig off!
The Sound of Music singalong has been going for many years at the Prince Charles cinema in Leicester Square. It's a pretty regular Friday occurrence. I've always wanted to go. It's nice that it's near to my cancer friend's 64th birthday, so doubly lovely. <3:D I just hope it doesn't snow and mess the trains up. One birthday of hers I was due to go up for a meal and theatre visit, but we had two foot of snow in a few hours. Everything came to a halt so I had to cancel at the last minute.
