I am loving all of the stories and photos of family/holiday deco! Mia is a dollbaby! And Harmony is as beautiful as her name! Hugs to those who need them. I spent today getting ready for tomorrow and Christmas, so...tomorrow I should be able to relax. You ever have those days where you are constantly moving and you get to 1:00 in the afternoon and you think, "Do I dare have a third cup of coffee this late? Or do I just go right to wine?" Brazilian or Italian? You have to love those latinos that get you through your day!

I like this ... ever since I was in my late 20s I've made a point of doing things that scare me. I've spent a good portion of my life living outside my comfort zone.
For me, now, it's this idea of going out and running a 10K event. Last time I ran an event, I was probably 16 or 17 years old. I cycle events, but I'm not a runner. And most of the events I cycle aren't big ones like this running event is. So here I am, at 50, actually considering running a 10K event with a whole lot of people!! Not in my comfort zone!! But that's one of the reasons why I'm thinking of doing it.

DH's tooth is out. His face is swollen and he is miserable; but he has good painkillers that make him go to sleep! (Thank God) This tooth was one of his upper molars. His upper jawbone seems much stronger than the lower. Earlier this year he had a tooth out on the lower jaw and the bone splintered and kept coming up through his gums for about a month or so after the removal. I really hope this doesn't happen with this one.
I feel for him. Mine is still giving me trouble and it has been weeks.klanders30 wrote: »DH is in a terrible mood, the holidays set him off horribly. I'm just ignoring it and going about my business. Is there something he'd like to do rather than the traditional Christmas stuff?
I like the whole Christmas thing, but a couple of my favourite Christmasses with my husband have been when we've gone away, just the two of us, and have spent a few days cycling, swimming and hiking ... with no family or anything around.cityjaneLondon wrote: »My cancer friend managed to scald her arm while making tea in the hospital this morning. Machka, I’m usually in bed by 7 or 8 so that I can read until 11:00. Although first I check in with my MFP friends.

I think of it as my time where the day is over and no one needs anything from me. I can get lost in a book. After a day of reality it’s nice to go somewhere else. It also is quiet time and a transition from the day into night.4 -
Eating has been 'festive', but feeling no guilt at all. DH has been enjoying the treats, and since we don't socialize or have family around us anymore, this is about as fun as our holiday is going to get. I'll be getting tamales for our Christmas meal. My mom, who was from El Salvador, always made them from scratch when I was growing up. All the kids on the block would line up in an assembly line to add in the various savory bits like chicken, capers, pimento, and green olives. Then, they would be wrapped up in paper and tied with string.
Funny thing is, I've been craving tamales for a couple weeks now and have been thinking about looking for a recipe for them!!

M - congrats on the run. Thanks for the recipe. That sounds really good. However, since you've made it before, what can I sustitute for the coconut milk? See, my daughter is HIGHLY allergic to coconut
Thanks ... and I don't know what you'd substitute. I use light coconut milk (lower calories), but coconut milk or cream is a very common ingredient in Indian food. I suppose you could try almond milk, but that might give it a slightly different flavour.

I like that ... and it is something I'd like to do maybe once a month or so. Just have a nice relaxing evening.
However, for now, I'll have to stick with my 15-20 minutes of reading on Friday and Saturday nights. I look forward to those minutes.1 -
M - I honestly don't even know the consistency of coconut milk. But I'm thinking that light coconut milk is probably thin somewhat. Maybe condensed milk? That doesn't have much if any flavor. Maybe cream since that, too, doesn't have much of a flavor. Does the coconut milk give it much flavor? I don't even know what flavor I could use that would mimic it. My daughter is so allergic that she has a reaction even if it's just in the air, which can be scary.

The light coconut milk has a consistency that is possibly slightly thicker than cow milk and it does have a distinct coconut flavour. In some Indian and Thai dishes you notice the coconut even when they set the dish in front of you ... you can smell it from a distance. But in Saag or Palak Paneer, it isn't as noticeable. If I didn't know the recipe, I wouldn't have guessed there was coconut milk in it.
I had a look at a few other recipes, and they suggest a person could use cream, like what you'd use for whipping. That might be an option for you.

Hi ladies,
Just got caught up on posts.
((Sharon))
Heather, glad to hear your friend was able to go home.
Love all the pics of little and big kids.
Went out today even though the weather was icy. I wanted to drop off the bracelet order. She was thrilled to get it and I was thrilled to get paid for it. She actually works at the jewelry store that sells my chain mailed jewelry. While we were there, DH asked if there was anything I would like for Christmas. Well duh, we were in a jewelry store. Oh course I wanted something. I really liked these earrings. So when I asked about them, she said they were hers. So DH bought me two different pairs of her earrings. So she bought the bracelet from me and I bought earrings of hers. She said that when her sister sees the bracelet she will want one so I’ll probably get another order. So worth the icy drive down.
Well I’m beat so I’ll close for today. Thinking of you all.

Lanette Thanks for asking about my mom's unique upbringing on a Sioux reservation. There are some really amazing photos, my brother has some & my cousin Rob has some. I will ask them to scan them so they are available to all of us. One is of my grandfather and my uncle (as a young boy). Both are in Sioux Indian ceremonial headdresses & garb. They were inducted into the Lakota tribe, a high honor bestowed on very few white men. I guess the women didn't have anything similar. It may take some time, but when I get the photos I will post the best ones. My grandfather looks Indian, but wasn't.

A busy day today:
*18,000 steps
*70 minutes walking the dogs
*80 minutes walking alone when the dogs got too cold
*143 minutes riding the exercise bike
*Costco to buy dog food
*Wal Mart to buy cat food
*thrift shop to drop off unneeded items
*library to get enough books to last til after the holiday closure
*grocery store to get food for us
*90 minute nap
*laundry and house work
*early to bed
I read books in bed at bedtime and in the middle of the night if I wake up and can't get back to sleep....also in the bathroom. I listen to audio books while I walk the dogs (usually 2-3 hours a day). I get books from the library or through paperback swap so I can send them on to others when I am finished. I have very few books on my shelf.
Best wishes to all of you who are celebrating in the next days.3 -

Janetr: Thanks for your warm thoughts about the new grandson. We're waiting for an invitation to meet him sometime after the first of the year. Thanks also for asking about the progress of our sweet old dog. He is doing better today although we still have a ways to go with him. Things are looking much more positive today.
Beth: Good thoughts for your dad. I'm glad the surgery worked out well. :flowerforyou:
Pip, Barbie, Peach, and other friends & dog lovers: Thank you all for your good wishes for our sweet old dog. They are helping. Our dog seems to be improving and doing better each day. Yay!!!
(((Sharon))) I'm sorry for your troubles and glad you are finding some joy in life.
Peach: I'm hoping for a zillion pictures of my new grandson but have none so far. I have seen a picture of him in his Mama's arms and hope for many more. We're planning on a trip east to meet him in the new year.
Heather: I've been so caught up with personal pet drama that I missed the excerpt of your writing. I'll try to go back and find it or a link. :flowerforyou: I LOVE the photo of you and DH in your Christmas Garb.
Michele: My experience with cocoanut milk is ancient, but I found it is rather thin. I know it is full of healthy nutrition. I wasn't a fan of it back then because I was young and it was "different." I'm still not very adventurous with foods.
It has been a jam-packed few days for us, and very stressful for a while. We have been truly blessed. We have a new grandson, who is a miracle for our son and daughter-in-law. That is truly a wonder and joy. And we're seeing good progress in our dog's health situation. He is better now than I imagined possible and seems to be improving hour by hour.

Katla - So glad your dog is improving. That is my brother, not DH. After I came home I had to put my outfit in the washing machine so he can wear it on Christmas Day for the grandchildren.
My writing excerpt was just in a post. Not too far back. I am very relieved to have finished the main typing and I can now have a break before the close editing starts. I have had an idea for a cover, but still haven't decided about photos. My brother said he was ok about me using one or two of him as a small child.

Merry Christmas Eve, everyone!
Another epic after catching up on 6 pages... ;}
Love, love, love everyone's decoration pics, especially as I have put up NOTHING. Will try for a few lights around the view window tomorrow, (now today) after church but that's it. Nor did I bake/candy make, except for 2 batches of rum balls, and a batch of almond crescent batter that may be too short to roll out, even if I could find my rolling pin and marble slab.
Sure miss the Nampa Rec center with its 5 pools including one heated to therapeutic 90 degrees. If there was such here I'd pay and go for sure, but alas no. There is a group trying to start an aquatic center, oughta check 'em out.
Barbie, might plagiarize your "...lucky enough" sign, every day I say out loud how fortunate we are to live within sight of the ocean. In 1950 I was named Barbara after both my grandmothers, it was also my paternal great grandmother's middle name. Papa was a SeaBee in the South Pacific. Was wondering if he have been deployed from one of your father's ships, but see it was in the European theatre. Lived in the SF Bay area for 36 of my 45 years 'til we moved to Idaho. We are back near the ocean where we belong.
Lanette, the absolutely best store bought peanut brittle we have ever tasted comes from See's. DH will get a box in his stocking... and there's a spare hiding in the closet just in case the first disappears too quickly Would your DH be willing to try any "green" appetite stimulants? "Nothing wrong with getting a head start" you are absolutely RIGHT! I enjoy your posts too, thanks!
Terry the body-friends-with-fat-pic made me snort my tea! Amen to our book friends taking us somewhere else. Tires-for-christmas... but better than coal in the stocking.
DJ that cows, water buffaloes and elephants pic explains a lot!
Michele apple and grapes instead of Christmas cookies? Great going! Agree with DJ about your willpower and your baking. Tasting in moderation is harder than not eating at all. Loved Corky's barbecue when was in Memphis for work, hope you enjoy it too. Sending good thoughts for the dog and cat, sounds like they need them.
Karen great reservation story, hope your cousin enjoys the memory and it sparks other stories.
Wendy WOW. That's a hike you'll never forget! It does help to explain the frosty questions on the phone, glad she turned out better than that.
Kelly Hope your DH feels better soon. Joe's DDS offered options, pull molar $700, try to save with crown extension etc $2300. I'm talking him into going for the crown because I'm afraid if he starts losing teeth, the ones left will move around. Papa had only 8 teeth and that surely contributed to his choking to death.
NYKaren Understand. Joe hates the holidays but mostly keeps his grinchiness to himself. Like yours, he is good company the rest of the year although co-operative is not his middle name ;}
Heather Love the pic with your bro, especially your Whoville hat. Glad your friend is out of the hospital, sending thoughts of comfort and peace to her. Thank you so much for sharing that section of your memoir... you really took me away to a different time and place. Elizabeth could have been my Irish aunt Margaret's soul twin, took care of her invalid MIL for decades, always had ready food and smiles. When we visited, my Mama would "improve things" by rearranging the contents of aunt Mararet's kitchen cabinets. She'd stand there and smile, and thank Mama, and as soon as we left for California she'd put it all back the way it was. Truly a saint!
Okie you sure know how to find the silver lining in the TMJ cloud.
Felicia Sure hope DH can accept Heather's suggestion about hiring a guide. Situation there is scary. IF I could get my DH to travel (I cannot) I'd definitely NOT go with him driving on his own in that area. I'd try to send him off with a guide while I swam and beachsat... and worry the whole time. NOT my idea of a relaxing vaca. Here's hoping he gets good news about the job and that improves his mood.
Becca/Meg/Sharon Nude floating in the dark in a closed pod? I'd freak out from claustrophobia, feeling vulnerable and darkfear.
Wendy your "Sanctuary" reminds me of a poem Mama loved "...but let me live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man."
Katla congrats on the grandbaby and holding good thoughts for your pooch. Glad he's able to get outside to do the necessary... and with meds not surgery. .. and is feeling better hourly. Long term, are there any vets near you who offer alternative treatments, like chiropractic and acupuncture?
Rye Wow, and I thought I had a lot of books Used to love sitting and soaking in the tree's smells, lights and sights... the one thing I really miss this year. Somehow next year I'll have to figure out a safe place to put a tree inside, and find the spirit to put it up "From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler," was one of my favorites when I was a page at our Children's Library, also Andrew Henry's Meadow. About 10 years ago we downsized and gave 43 boxes of books to the Friends of the Library. I still had stashed 11 boxes in closets and garage that wouldn't fit into our 4 floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. Whenever the moon is in Virgo, I try to thin the herd a little, but find it hard to give away books, even in good cause.
Beth prayers for you and your parents ((hugs)) and thankful for adhesions instead.
pip Bullwinkle and Bootz and are lucky pooches. Sure understand about missing Rocky, this time of year I especially miss my last cat, "Petunia, Empress of the Universe". She used to roost in the tree without damaging the ornaments.
Machka Same pace on climb as on flat, that's awesome! Hip lenghth hair? Wow!
Rori "since we don't socialize or have family around us anymore, this is about as fun as our holiday is going to get" sounds like us. Found a restaurant in town doing Christmas dinner, If I can get reservations will suggest it to Joe. The tamales sound yummy!
Janetr Mia looks so proud of her frosting art!
Lenora With you gal, Micro$oft is really screwing up. Got so mad at the Windows 10 enforced Edge and updates that when my desktop HD died, I bought a used laptop that still had Windows 7. So far so good. And as Machka suggested, I use FireFox to browse the web.
Sharon so very sorry you are going through this at any time but especially during the holidays. Have you talked to a lawyer? You need to at least know your rights and best steps in case Larry proceeds. Brava for continuing to find joy in spite of it all.
Lisa Thanks for sharing daughter's story, a real heartwarmer.
Carol $7 for a coke? That makes pay per view at home a real deal!
Becca served 81? Bet you WERE sore and tired. Love the "alley chat" and what you would do if Sharon lived nearby. We'd all be right there with ya'.
Evie my new go to for the scratchy-throat-hope-not-to-come-down-with-the-crud is adding 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper to hot tea with honey and TrueLemon. Really heats and opens things up
Time to sleep. Blessings to us all.
Hugs to all,

Morning all... back home after our flying trip, and it's good to be back. We both slept almost not at all in the hotel on Friday night. Very loud air conditioner that sounded like a semi-truck firing up every few minutes, plus for me, an inner spring mattress hurts about a half dozen pain points on my hips and legs. But back in our own bed last night, slept like a baby.
As usual, the talk time was good for us--decided to stay here with our daughter for at least this coming year, and put as much money away as we possibly can. Corey surprised me when he said he thought he could definitely deal with it for a year. He's the childcare provider, so the decision rests on him.
Talked to Kelsey when we got back, and she was thrilled, and relieved. Right now, she's deployable with short notice, and to have her home situation settled is our gift to her. Anything that can take the worry out of her eyes right now makes me happy... Christmas will be hard on her, with Brian gone, and while I'm looking forward to the distraction of exchanging gifts, I'm not looking forward to her grief over his absence. Holidays are important to her--unlike me and her father--so it will be tough.
Stopped at a massive antique consignment shop in Waynesville on the way back, and after my head blew up from all the choices, found an old metal egg separator and a pineapple eyer. Had never seen one before. She likes old metal & wood kitchen implements, and has a display of them up in her dining room, on a wood backing board made of reclaimed fence. This morning, as soon as I have enough coffee in me, will scootch up to Wally-World and pick up a card for her. Trying to avoid the crowds around here, and there are plenty.
Also decided that North Carolina, while it's beautiful up in the mountains, may not be right for our forever home. We'll keep an eye out for that perfect property--but are more likely to find it further north in the price range we're looking for. Don't want to settle for something that's sort of what we want, want it to be right. Perhaps our standards are too high. But, we're in the right place doing the right thing, and that will have to be enough. For now. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?
Love y'all,

I've arranged to phone my friend later this afternoon. I texted her first to make sure she was up to it and wasn't super busy. I am thinking about her most of the time and didn't sleep well. You know when you have a friend that "gets" you? Well that's her. My Portsmouth friend is the same. I consider myself so lucky to have had good friends in my life.
For those that don't remember I'm reposting a photo of the party she held this year to thank the women who had sat with her through her chemo. In fact, her very best friend isn't there, as she couldn't come. Her hair is just coming back after chemo. She gave us each a beautiful cup and saucer in a "Rose" pattern as that is her middle name.
Also in my kitchen is an origami bird mobile she made for me. The middle bird is different and the message says. " Heather, you are one of a kind. " etc.
She is the one in the centre front.
Got to wrap DH's Santa presents today, tidy up a bit and pack and get sorted for our trip to Hove tomorrow. We have huge presents to get in the car! Setting off a 9 am. My son rang yesterday to urge us to come earlier, but we like our Christmas morning Santa session. He is going to cook the turkey on his "Egg" barbecue so that the oven is free for sides. DDIL is still not eating much after her operation. We will stay as long as we are needed on Boxing Day, but have to get back for guests.
Weird thing - I had been complaining to the tech support for the online grocery delivery about their useless website. I got an email back to say they had reclaimed my delivery slot for the 27th and put some milk in it to hold it for me for two hours if I still wanted it!!! So I used it. Felt a bit spooky...........
Much love, Heather UK xxxxxxx

Merry Christmas Eve
Today I walked to a church that is 1 km away. I do have a church that is closer, but if some of you recall, I just didn't feel particularly comfortable there. This one is halfway up a steep hill, so it was a bit of a hike, but it definitely felt better. It was a nice service.
My husband had to work again this morning, but he got back early so we did a little bit of shopping ... mainly work stuff for him, but we did each get new mobile phone covers!
Edit: My parents called via Messenger/Skype ... that was a highlight of the day, getting to see and talk to my parents. While we were talking my brother rang them and so greetings were passed between us all.
Then we went for a 27 km bicycle ride. Gotta make some effort to compensate for everything I'm eating!!
And speaking of eating ... then we went out for dinner. We've been eating out a lot this week but my husband, the family cook, is tired and it is, after all, Christmas. It was Thai on Friday night, Mexican last night, and American tonight.
The rest of the evening was spent watching Midsomer Murders and then Melbourne's Carols by Candlelight.
I could wish the weather was better. Drizzle and low teens isn't particularly nice. They're even hinting there could be snow at higher elevations. But at least we aren't getting the Canadian snowfalls!!

morning lovely ladies, I feel so much better after cleaning my fridge! Silly but cleaning is thinking time for me and clearing the decks makes me feel powerful! I made whole milk yogurt in the IP and it turned out fantastic, so that will be great to have all week. I am planning on roasted brussel sprouts, steamed asparagus and a beautiful kale salad to be served alongside the spiral cut ham I got 1/2 price at the store (score) for christmas eve dinner.
Travelling to my family in Phila tomorrow will have to be a last minute call--we're supposed to get up to 3 inches of icy snow tonight into tomorrow and I am not gonna drive in it, even for family, I just can't handle that. So back to the store I go today to think up an alternative christmas feast just in case. I will go out early to avoid the crush. My BFF was in the stores yesterday and said every line she was on was at least a 45 minute wait---not something I am gonna do!
Going to hit the gym today and continue my routine cause that is what makes me happy! NYKAREN

Did a quick WalMart run this morning for popup tissue boxes... SO stole Marcelyn's idea about taping $1 bills together to pull out of a box. Had 50 $1 bills, as I throw all mine in a drawer, along with all my coin change, and taped $25 each to pull out of a Kleenex box tomorrow for the little ones. The two-year-old definitely gets the concept of money, and I think they'll both have fun with it. Will have them both open them at the same time, so the surprise is fresh for both. Should be fun. Love you ladies!
