Janetr - that letter is too cute. I had to laugh - he mentions that Choppo hasn't been naughty, he's just a normal puppy! What a nice thing to explain to Santa, lol. I think he'll do well running a doggy day care.
Letters like that are such precious keepsakes. Lucky grandmother!

Janet such a sweet sweet letter, reveals a lot about the author
Lanette your description of kale salad prep made me want to run out and get some! I always love kale when someone else prepares it! But its inspiring me to add more greens to my meal plan.
I’m Hibernating due to extreme cold but will still get out to exercise, enjoyed my errand day yesterday. today will be about chasing dust bunnies and shredding out dated paperwork. Always fun- I love organization this time of year.
Looking at researchinng bullet journaling and mind mapping to add to my usual journaling activity. Sounds like a fun way to mix things up. Last night I had the chance to read through my journal from September to now and truly enjoyed the perspective this gives me.
Stay warm ladies

So I've done it. I've signed up for the local 10K run in mid-January.
It's a big event, there's the marathon distance, the half-marathon, the 10K, a 5K and even a 1K (for the kids, I think). Hundreds of runners. There's a 500 participant cap on the 10K alone. The half-marathon and marathon would be too far for me, but perhaps the 10K might be all right.
Now I'm nervous!!

Machka - so glad you found shoes that fit and are comfortable. That can be quite a challenge!
Sharon - (((HUGS))) Do you think Larry is especially mean around the holidays?
Barbie - I too really like eggs, especially when I can get them from our friend who lets the hens free range in the orchard. He decided to turn the lights on in the chicken coop a few hours a day and he is suddenly loaded with eggs so I was thrilled to be able to get them from him again as the girls normally take the winter off, lol.
And I love dairy (especially when it's turned into ice cream OR delicious organic yogurt!) and well prepared fish, and even some nice pot roast with potatoes and carrots and gravy. I still plan to eat everything, just not too much.
So, I'm trying to turn my attention to making healthful and beautiful plant based foods and stop thinking about making some nice lemon squares. Or Brownies. Or cinnamon rolls with pecan gooey and icing on top. AARRGGHH.... where'd I put that bean salad recipe?
Pip - you might have to get out the boot and keep me on track, lol.
A few years ago, I was a rabid green smoothie fan and even taught a class in it. Had beautiful kale and collards in the garden. Then, I gradually lost interest and packed everything way as the kale crops were dismal thanks to the white butterflies and the kale I bought at the grocery store seemed bitter and tough.
But, I'm ready to try it again and this time won't go hog-wild on the kale. Yesterday I made a yummy one with a handful of kale (they now sell baby kale in the organic section, it's not cheap but looks to be enough there for 4 or 5 green smoothies) , whole unpeeled apple (cored of course), tangerine, handful of frozen blueberries, teaspoon of "super greens" powder (dehydrated wheat grass), big scoop of organic yogurt and water to blend it. Main thing is, it kept me out of DH's little Debbie stash. And it had at least 2 glasses of liquid - neat way to get my water in.
Better close for now. Thinking of all of you in the Midwest and East Coast who are into the super cold weather, and sending warm thoughts.
Have a good Friday!

Hi ladies,
(((Sharon)))
Allie, I think your pup feels your stress and that is why he is misbehaving.
I’m sitting here waiting to have my new tires on. Took the day off and also next Tuesday. Guy is coming to fix the washer this afternoon.
DD asked if we could start exercising in the new year. She isn’t happy about how she looks. Of course I said yes! Maybe having someone do it with me will help get me going . I’m hoping that my wrist is better enough to try out my new kettlebells. It still gets a little sore if I use it too much.
After having tires put on, I need to run into work. On of my co-workers wants to buy one of my bookmarks. I have two kinds. One is done in Hardanger embroidery and one type is made from the spine of old books. Those sold pretty well when I did them for craft shows years ago. I’ll post some pics later.
It’s-15 here this morning . Can’t seem to get warm so I’m having hot cider. Yum.
NYE DH and I stay home and watch the ball drop in NYC. Then we take off all our clothes (except shoes), run out on the deck and yell Happy New Year! We sort of dance around like fools for a bit the go back in, toast with sparkling cider, then go to bed. Of course we live in the woods and no one sees us. We laugh and laugh. This naked celebration started a few years ago when I dared DH to be naked when he went out to yell Happy New Year. I like that even at 62 I can still be a little crazy. And it’s nice that DH is crazy with me.
Hugs to all, Terry in VT hoping it’s a little warmer New Years Eve.8 -
Lanette ~ Your kale salad sound yummy with the exception that I don't like kale at all! I understand that it is a very good source of vitamins and fiber, but, to me is bitter with a consistency I don't like. And, I also don't like cilantra!
Janet ~ Your grandson's letter to Santa makes him sound like such a caring soul! Your are lucky to have him.
Joyce ~ Get well soon! Is the big family party going to be too much for you?
Michele ~ Sounds like your visit with Pete and Denise was successful!
O'Connel ~ Congrats on the new job. I don't see how anyone could survive the hours you mentioned.
Hugs to all those who are in the deep snows!

Terry - Love the naked NY. Brilliant!
Lanette - I have a very good book on my Kindle, called VEGAN UNDER PRESSURE. Excellent for timings for all kinds of beans and veggies. I haven't actually used the recipes, but I do consult it over timings in the IP. You will find the IP a huge help in a more plant based diet. I cook a big batch of beans/chickpeas/quinoa etc and freeze them in weighed portions so I know the calories. You could write the calories on the label. My favourite thing at the moment is the sprouted beans I do in the IP. We had them curried last night with sea bass and they are also delicious raw in a brown rice or quinoa salad. I am an omnivore, but I love vegan food. DH isn't as keen as me, or I would have it almost every day. He does enjoy it when he has it.
We always watch the London fireworks for NY midnight and the chimes of Big Ben on the BBC. We turn the sound off after the chimes as we love the fireworks, but hate the music they stick on. :grumble:
Still haven't heard anything from my cancer friend. I don't have anyone's phone number, like her best friend, or children. If I don't get a reply by tomorrow I will leave my number on her answerphone and hope someone gets back to me. She may just be laying low, but it's a worry. I should have collected a couple of numbers before now.
Much love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxx6 -

Good morning ladies! Terry - love the naked New Year! Very funny! Heather - I hope you hear something from your cancer friend soon. I know it has to be weighing on you. Lanette - good luck with your green smoothies. Machka - good luck on the 10K. I have no doubt you will rock it! Allie - I hope Alfie calms down for you. Barbie - glad your weather is clear so you can safely walk without worrying about ice.
My TMJ is better. The meds helped a lot. I am able to eat most things now within reason. It is still uncomfortable to open my mouth wide and chewing something like steak is out of the question. The pain and need to not chew greatly helped my weight loss for the month of December. I think for the first time ever I lost weight in December. As of this morning I have lost 60 lbs and hit my next mini goal I had set for Feb 2nd. I am rethinking what I want the Feb 2nd mini goal to be now.
Have a great day!

Those of you who haven't taken down the Christmas tree yet - here's a suggestion:
Now I'm getting excited about putting up a tree next Christmas~
Okie - congrats on the 60 lbs! Glad your TMJ is getting better but you had a rough go of it. Let me know if you need a crate full of green smoothies, lol.
Heather - thank you for the Vegan Under Pressure tip. I will check it out. I have some heirloom dry beans around here that I normally pressure can - I didn't go near the canners this summer and fall because it was so hot. So am anxious to try them in the IP.
Terry - yikes! Make sure to have a spare house key so you don't get locked out. Not sure where you'll put it tho - maybe in your shoe? There's nothing like exposing yourself to the new year, lol.
Carol - I am like you with the cilantro - it also is super nutritious but it tastes like soap to me. I can tolerate it if it's hidden in dishes. Black licorice is another thing I don't like, and I know it's genetic.
I ran across a new word (for me) - epigenetics - which studies external and environmental factors that cause genes to switch on and off.
Like the genes for certain cancers, for example. While my mom and grandmother both had breast cancer (and each survived an additional 50 years after their surgeries w/o chemo or radiation), there is a good chance that getting antioxidants and good things in fresh fruits and veggies, plus taking vitamin D so far as kept any gene-influenced cancer away or at least dormant in my body.
Seems like the research in this quite recent (within the past decade or so?) or at least it's hitting the mainstream. I would rather prevent it than try to cure it. Seems sugar and Little Debbies (chemicals and preservatives) can turn the gene on, and green veggies, especially cruciferous (cabbage, broccoli, kale, etc.) help keep it turned off.
Several of the films and interviews I've watched on FMTV emphasize this - I needed that reminder.
Have any of you watched "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" on Netflix? A documentary by Joe Cross (Australian) who was quite ill and obese and decided to go on a juice fast for 60 days, and had a remarkable turn-around. I'm not a juicer at all, (tried for a few days but the juicer was a bear to clean and I didn't like tossing out the fiber) but was impressed by how his healthy glow and energy returned and how young his skin looked- I'm certain the fruits and veggies he was now consuming had a lot to do with it.
Time to go pump iron. Then make a smoothie!!

Hi Ladies. I couldn't get in here yesterday, the computer just kept "thinking". Things are going well here; got to see everyone on Christmas although DD#1 wouldn't come to our best friends' because she isn't speaking to DD#2. So I went there afterwards. DH called twice and said they had an excellent meal, so he's grateful for that one small thing. Yesterday I cut a link of my daisy chain and put it in the mail to him. It's been a month already. Hard to believe.
Well we are in the deep freeze; it's going to be -20 ish on New Years Eve day. We usually have a week or two like this each year and I don't mind. But I do drive down the road to the mailbox!
Short and sweet; hoping you are enjoying the last days of the year. Take care and stay warm. Meg from frigid Omaha5 -
My little tree. We had a nice but quiet Christmas in New Mexico in the RV. Doctor report has me back trying to get back to it. See you all later.

My new shoes!!
I LOVE Hoka's. I am on my third pair (one pair is retired and I rotate the other two). I am getting a pair of their trail running shoes next for my trail runs (better lugs for trails) My favorites so far are their Bondi series.
You will do great in your race. Just don't "rabbit" out of the start keeping up with everyone. Set YOUR pace and run YOUR race.

Lenora: It is great to have you with us again!
LinCharpentier: It is wonderful to see you post here. I've missed you!
Allie: Sending good thoughts for your dad. (((HUGS)))
Michelle: I'm glad that your kids came to visit.
Wendy: My mom used to exercise with Jack LaLanne in the mid 1950s. He lived a very long life. I last saw him on TV advertising a product I'll call a juicer because I don't actually remember the product name. He was in his late 90's by then.
Pat in OH: Thanks for your good wishes about the new grandson. He is a miracle baby and we're so happy to have him .
Joyce: Thank you for posting. I have worried about you & it is so good to see that you're doing better.
JanetOKC: Brayden's letter to Santa is the dearest Santa letter I've ever read. Thank you for sharing!
Carol in GA: Your New Year's Eve and Day traditions are new to me, except for trees. We take our trees out on New Year's Day. Since our trees are living plants, they'll need to stay in the garage for a while to get used to cooler temps before we take them out into their spots in the yard.
Machka: The new shoes look great! I love the colors!
Rita: Thanks for checking in with us. You seem to be having a wonderful adventure. Three cheers!
I had my first night in our bed since the dog's health crisis began. I've been on the couch in the living room with him beside me all of this time. I'm still feeling fatigued but also optimistic for his future. He's a good old boy & I'd like to keep him around for as long as possible.

Janetr - I also thought the letter was really lovely. I read it to DH.
Just want to share my success with Amazon. I ordered a selection of 12 Alcohol Free Beers from them, based on the fact that it contained three Pale Ales which I like the best. When it arrived there were no PAs, but 3 Stout instead. I wrote a stinking review and then emailed Amazon. I got an email back immediately, giving me a 30% discount on the package. Score!
I also ordered a new veggie peeler for my son, to be sent to him in Hove, as the one he gave me to peel with on Christmas Day was horribly blunt and useless. I was very rude about it!

Janet-cute letter. definitely keep!
Katla, so glad you are doing all you can for your old dog. That is also my goal with all my animals, to provide them optimum diet and exercise so that they will stay healthy and enjoy long active lives. Just because they are old doesn't mean they don't deserve the best of treatment. They give so much love all their too-short lives.
Here is a quote I found about Jack Lalanne. He published a book called Live Young Forever when he was 95 and died of respitory failure/pneumonia at 96.
"Dying is easy. Living is a pain in the butt. It's like an athletic event. You've got to train for it. You've got to eat right. You've got to exercise. Your health account, your bank account, they're the same thing. The more you put in, the more you can take out. Exercise is king and nutrition is queen: together, you have a kingdom."
If you are interested in reading his wisdom of a lifetime, google Live Young Forever pdf. I found the manuscript for free online and am reading it now.

Howdy y'all! I am in Texas! I'm fixin' na go into downtown Fort Worth on either the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. Any of you DFW area ladies going to be available to meet? Suebdew, Re, Rey, Cathy and any one else? Marcelyn- I was supposed to have a two hour layover in Houston, but due to the winter storm in West Michigan, my flight was delayed and my two hour layover turned into a five minute sprint through the terminal to catch my connection to DFW! Yikes!
Penny- Good to hear from you!
Beth- glad to hear things are going better for your dad
Janet- Such a sweet Santa letter!
Joyce- Glad your health is being upgraded and you are being moved out of ICU!!
Lanette-Whoa! I think you responded to everyone with that last post! THAT impresses me. I have had a very fuzzy brain since my doc took me off the pill. Must be my brain is exiting with the estrogen?
Carol- I bet there are MORE than 200 things you can eat all you want of; they just won't mention how much work you have to put in to be able to do that.
Marcelyn and Machka- My mom used to serve pork with noodles and cabbage and also a dish called Hoppin' John.
Marcelyn explained the reason for the pork, noodles at the new year is considered lucky. Hoppin' John, which is a bean dish (I think black eyed peas) is also to bring you luck. I distinctly remember saying "Ewwww! Not Hoppin' John" as a teen. My own family usually has chinese food to ring in the new year.
Heather - If I were a guest in your home, I would gladly take care of that stout for you! I do love a good flavored stout, but with so many craft beers available, I can easily find an IPA or lager with flavor that I enjoy. I tend to lean towards coffee flavors more than fruit flavors. BUT there is a local brewery that makes a lovely blueberry and coriander flavored ale. Lost Dune by New Holland Brewery. Mmmmm!
Cilantro and Black Licorice- Yummmm! I think it was Lanette and some one else talking about these two flavors. I love them both and my DH despises them both. He says the same as you in regards to cilantro "tastes like soap". I should ask him "Palmolive or Lifebouy?" (A Christmas Story) meh. He wasn't spanked as a child, so I doubt he EVER had a bar of soap in his mouth. I was special, as I had a relationship with a wooden spoon and also was a mini-connoisseur of soap flavors.
Well, I am here in Texas. DD is still at work so son in law picked me up at the airport with Mr. Joaquin asleep in the back seat. J woke up when we arrived home and looked at me in confusion. "How did this woman get out of the phone?" He became my friend after I fed him some lunch (we had spaghetti and peas) and played with him and his toys. I tossed him around a little and "flew" him in the air (kept hands on him, just held him above my head and flew) and THEN he leaned in and gave me the wonderful hands on both cheeks, open mouth, very wet, baby kiss! My heart melted. He is snoozing again. He has a little cold; which means I will probably take it home with me. But SO worth it for one touch of those baby hands and a sweet little kiss on the face. His fur brother, Chappie, seemed to recognize me right away. He was doing the happy dog wag (where his tail knocks over everything that isn't nailed down) and bottom wiggling, and yippy-whine talking to me. He brought me his ball right away. (Yup, he remembers) I bet it's the eggs that I fix him for breakfast, when I am here. That is our morning routine when I visit. Grandma wakes up first, fixes Chappie and herself a couple of eggs. Grandma has coffee and chats with her friends on Women 50+, then she takes me for a walk to the park and then we throw the ball around. He's a good boy.
DD just called and asked me to make out a shopping list. We are going to grab dinner from Fuzzy's and then get the shopping done for the rest of the week. I asked son in law what he wanted to eat and got the usual man answer of "I don't care. Anything is fine." So then I asked about snacks and he said, "We don't usually buy snacks" So I told him that I had already budgeted groceries into my spending for this trip PLUS it's New Years Eve weekend. He asked for cheetos and beer. *sigh* Looks like I will have to show him how we do NYE! Going to get some "healthier" nibbles, but will also get some munchie type things. DD didn't want to make Christmas cookies, but wanted me to show her how to make the pretzels that I make. I think I will do that the evening before I leave, so that I don't eat them all. Love those things!
Ah well, that's all for now. I will have pictures to post as the week goes on. I hope to include one of myself and some of our Texas group! Msg me ladies if you would like to meet up and if any of those dates work for you!
