JANET reading your memories of your Mum brought tears to my eyes, its great to have those good memories as not everyone is so lucky
LANETTE leave for Spain on 17th, can't wait, we have Christmas meal next Saturday with DS, his step children and grandchildren. We have 2 step great granddaughters. It's funny because DS never wanted his own kids but his first wife had 1 when they married, she is very dear to us even though son and her mum divorced. His present wife has 2 kids who now each have a daughter.
My eating has got out of control, need to lose a couple of pounds before I go away.
Welcome to newbies
Kate UK
Kate, thank you for reminding me that I have been truly blessed. I've tried to pass the same to my daughters. A couple of years ago on Facebook a questionaire was being circled that had you answer questions about yourself. One question was, Who is your hero?" My youngest daughter answered, my Mom. I have cherished that so. It made all the years of struggling as a single parent worth it. . Children do learn by example.5 -
"Welcome back bk, it's been 611 days since you've been on the Wii fit balance board"
When asked, I've been saying I weigh 160, wii says only 152.8 that sure gave me a boost.
Thanks NYKaren for micro actions. I've been daunted about hooking up the wii, but decided to take it one teensy bit at a time. First the physical connections. Then the remotes and balance board. Next will be troubleshooting the internet connection, the wii doesn't see my wifi access point. Don't need the internet connection to play on the balance board, took the body test (body age 55vs67 calendar ) and played the silly penguin slide game which never fails to get me giggling. Now that it works, won't have the "it's dark, scary, rainy outside-can't walk" excuse not to play! And soon as it's hooked up to the internet, can line dance too!
Machka, how does your DH blow dry a whole cherry orchard?
Who was it that makes jalapeno brittle? Now that's a recipe I need!

I found out yesterday that I was accepted into the clinical trial. I will check in on Wednesday and released on Sunday. My grandmother and an uncle died from Alzheimer’s.
Thanksgiving was great. I spent Monday - Friday at my Mom’s. My brothers and daughter’s family came for dinner. My grandson was missing. It was his dad’s turn for the holiday.
I invited my Mom for a visit and brought her home with me. She lives in East TX and it is a 2 1/2 hour drive. She is 89 and due to a broken neck and permanent neck brace no longer drives. We had a very nice visit and stayed fairly busy. She was able to spend more time with the 2 great grand children.
Through Facebook I was able to contact the son of one of her oldest friends. She is in assisted living very close to me so I took Mom to visit her. She also went with me to my grandson’s school one afternoon. We joined my daughter’s family one evening at an event called “Enchant”. It included a light maze and a German Christmas market. It is really fun to experience such things through the eyes of a 2 and 7 year old.
My youngest brother met us in Canton on Wednesday to pick up my Mom and take her home. That is halfway.
Here is a picture of me, my daughter, granddaughter and my mom. Also included are mine and my brother’s dogs, Angel and Freckles.

Hi Sisters, well good news and bad: First, no queens! Three hives all said no. So I have tried again. If they don't make this week, I will "nuke" the queens and see if that makes a difference. Right now the queens are in the bottom boxes and I have put a queen excluder mat between the bottom and top boxes. The I put the cells with larvae in the top boxes. But maybe at this time of year the bees or either concentrating fully on gathering nector, or maybe the queen's pheremones are so strong that it is inhibiting the worker bees from making new queens. So I will set up a small box (Nuclear) next to the main double box hive, and move the queen to that to trigger the hive into "queenless" mode so hopefully they will start making. It is a full moon here last night. Will be interesting to see if that has any affect on the queen making...
The GOOOD news is, I have managed to get through a second day of fasting and dropped another couple pounds off to reach the 120's (my happy place) actually 129.1, which is borderline because I know that after I have eaten for a day or two, my weight goes up by two pounds with food in my system. So I will try to continue my fast today if I am able to. It is a good time for fasting now, before all the Christmas feasting starts. We always have a staff Christmas party at a nice restaurant in town, and we have a staff member retiring this year so that might mean two separate feasts, LOL. So yesterday, all I had was three chocolate turmeric Lassi, a green tea with honey, water with lime juice and four or five strong mint cough lollies. It is so hot here atm that I don't even feel like eating, I just want to drink.
I love it when my "fast switch" is flipped and I can walk past tempting food and just say NO. My youngest daughter stopped in yesterday morning on her way home from milking cows and she was RAVENOUS, and begged me to make pancakes for her. I have been craving pancakes too, previous to fasting, but I was able to cook up a whole batch and give her the leftovers to take with her without batting an eyelid. The sugar beast is caged during my fasts. LOL. Today will be a bit more dangerous as I have to go into town, into work (stress) and to the supermarket (danger place). If I can stay busy and stay out of town, I have a higher chance of sticking to my fast. I am also trying not to do anything too strenuous as I know that also can trigger me to break my fast. So I worked on getting Christmas cards written and weighing the two Christmas boxes I send to family in America. Doing the bees yesterday was a bit hard, as it was super hot and I sweated heaps, but I went and laid down for an hour afterwards then drank two cups of water and had that honey and green tea drink and I managed to carry on. It puts me in such a good mood when I am fasting and the scales are giving me friendly feedback. The longest fast I've done was 14 days but most of my fasts are less than five days. It is my weight control method of choice because it suits my impatient nature. I like Big results Fast! Will see how today goes. I would love to give myself the present of reaching my goal weight and sticking to it over Christmas... Wendy
PS. I have vicariously enjoyed Heather's roast and apricot crumble. I feel very full and satisfied. THank you Heather.6 -
I have been having photo upload problems but have managed to get photos of the puppets and blanket. I've been making this blanket for years and got the directions from LionBrand Homespun. This is the first time I've put a face on one of my blankets. Here goes:

Mary, thank for saying that! I guess you saw my pic int that photo thread. I’m proud, but have a long way to go yet, so I’m not going to let myself be satisfied.
AllThanks for reading my memory ramblings. It helped me focus my thoughts to share them all with you. I do so miss mom at the holidays. She just loved all the x-mas hoopla!
This was party weekend, friends hosting holiday get togethers. I ate crazy ( compared to my normal lately) yet ate a lot less than I would have done last year. And a considerable amount of my eating was cherry tomatoes, pineapple and cantaloupe. Oh, yes, there was Chex mix snacking, pie and peppermint bark for desert ( and wonderful wood smoked lean white chicken meat for my main course) but all in all a very carb heavy day that certainly busted the roof off my calorie allotment- but I’m totally fine with it.
My December goal is to weigh less on the 31st than the 1st even if the difference can only be measured in ounces. And a wise woman taught me this phrase: “Never two days in a row”. So I’m allowing myself some unrestricted food time with those two caveats this December. Oh, and fasting on Tuesday and Thursdays. Hopefully this will be a successful plan.
My hot flashes are still on the extreme end of the scale - I wore a sleeveless summer cotton dress under a heavy fall sweater wrap to the party. Lol, that wrap was tightly wrapped around me one minute, and flung off my shoulders the next. The beach weight summer bathing wrap-up dresses are the only thing that lets me socialize at this time.
Oddly enough, I thought last night in bed would be constant hot-flash torture but I only had three intense episodes so I was able to get some better sleep than I have in a long time. I’ll have to pay extra attention to sleeping better with less hot flashes and the relationship to eating more carbs. While I can’t increase carbs much while I’m still dieting, maybe in maintenance it might have some effect. Heaven knows I’m trying every remedy recommended to me to little or no effect thus far.
Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas... the stockings are hung, the trees have lights and garlands and the I’m slowly putting on my favourite ornaments. I’ll bake some cookies starting the week prior to Christmas so my Christmas Day guests have plenty and can take them home with them. Im also going to make a new Christmas tradition- fruit roll-ups with my dehydrator. Delicious and relatively healthy sweets. If I make them when my husband isn’t looking, I can even sneak in some spinach!
I’m afraid I have been irritating my kitties (see below) but rest assured no animals have been harmed in the portrait taking sessions. Dignity, however, may have been lost.
Cin Cin a tutti!

Wow December already. I guess the Christmas season has started. I have worked hard at keeping track of how much food goes in. Hard to do with eating out and pot luck food. I really notice how quick I can be full, so less going in.
I am down 1.6 lbs this week, so 229 lbs today, from 253 lbs . That is 24 lbs total lost since Sept. It is also 70 days of logging in my food. This feels so good. Some pants are not fitting and I have to wear a belt to keep them on. I am hoping by spring I can buy new clothes.
My dog is still on rest so not doing very much for exercise. We also have ice every where, so walking outside not possible. When she is all healed up we will have to work at getting us fit again, before too much agility jumping and classes. I do competitive agility with my dog, a Lab, Gemma.
I hope everyone has a good week ahead.

Cathy - Congratulations on the great weight loss. :drinker: That is terrific!
Our guests are gone. It all went well. A moment of minor panic when I thought the potatoes weren't roasting fast enough, but all was fine. I am going to add up the calorie damage in a moment. We all talked a lot at a greater, more honest depth than before, and her boyfriend was much more forthcoming than previously, so I guess it was a good day. We all swapped life changing stories. She seemed fine, apart from having put on a bit of weight.
Left overs for supper when I've done my calculations. I love cold roast veg. With chilli sauce.

I would like to hear about this too. Have been good on food front today, a mini fast. DH was out with friends so I put tv on in bedroom (away from the kitchen) so while watching snooker I did my Christmas cards so quite pleased with myself.

Hi friends. It is a gorgeous sunny day in the 50s here! I slept in and just plan on having a quiet day here at home. A friend from a support group brought me a ‘care package’ from the wives…bath salts, a journal, stationary, a lounging suit, a fuzzy blanket, 2 bottles of alcohol, and hot cocoa mix. Oh yes, I forgot a giant-sized bag of Goldfish crackers. It’s a tradition in the group and it’s very nice. After lunch I plan to curl up with the blanket and nap!
Wendy: I bet that beer was good after all that work! Do you keep bees?
Heather: yes, he does know how lucky he is. The bottom line was that he called a therapist before even calling a lawyer and has been serious about continuing this entire year, plus he has joined two support groups. So I guess I feel lucky that he is taking responsibility and trying to move forward.
Allie: I hope you get the pup! Praying for BIL
Kellie: welcome and yes! Join the gym! I’m a nurse, so RICE to me means Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation for maybe a painful ankle or something.
Katiebug: good job getting to the gym each day.
Ramona: welcome to the group!
Rori: I admire your idea for the holidays! I do think that sounds wonderful to pay off someone’s layaway. I’m so sorry about your friend. It’s nice that you got her plants…something tangible to remember her by. I’d love to meet for coffee…I plan to come in March with a friend and my younger daughter. Do you still see Jane? And I can’t remember that other lady who was at lunch that time too. How is she?
Matchka: do you need to construct an ark? LOL Gorgeous pictures!
DJ: thanks for the big ol’ hug!4 -

Hi Gals,
Felicia – give yourself the time and space to go through the emotions as you need to but also remember that having control of what you can, exercise and food can help you feel better too…
Allie – So I know you would love to have a dog with you full time, and I hate to be a party pooper; but with work in such flux is this the right time to take on the financial concerns of a pet? You know from experience how pricy they can be… Just a thought not a judgement! As I replaced a dog when I was completely unemployed… but you do have access to the dogs that live at Toms….

Kate, I am so jealous you are going to Spain for Christmas. Travelling around Spain is on my Bucket List. I will get there one day. Please post lots of pictures so I can at least travel in my mind.
Meg, yes a cold beer is just about a Have To after bucking bales of hay in the hot summer. We have been keeping bees for six years now, starting with 25 hives and making and buying more. I think we have around 400 this year. My husband has worked non-stop, nights and weekends building up our "retirement" business. We are retiring from our travel agency after 25 years, selling our shares back to the main company and going into bee keeping full time this year. Dec 31 is our last day of owning the travel agency but we will still work there for awhile as we hand the reins over to new managers. It is very scary for us as we still have a big mortgage on our small property and the bee income is certainly not guaranteed as they are lifestock that are affected by the weather and disease and vulnerable to wasp attack and pesticides etc. So, it's a big leap of faith for us. I may have to take a job washing dishes somewhere, LOL. Money is really tight right now and we may have to downsize our lifestyle. I am just taking each day at a time and being grateful for the many blessings in my life. Wendy3 -
Cathy, I love the pics. The wonder on the children's faces is beautiful to behold. I would so love to go to a German Christmas Market. The pic of the dogs-the black and white border collie looks an awful lot like our new rescue dog Lace. She is wonderful clever dog and it is hard to take a pic of her because she wants to crawl into my arms constantly to get the love she craves and was deprived of for the first four years of her life. She is my shadow and "helps" round up the horses and ducks, LOL. We have only had her a few weeks since we got home from Vanuatu.
Katla, those puppets are so cute. Is the first one a beaver? I want. Lol
Here is a pic of Lace on our walk this morning.

I am so enjoying everyone's photos and stories. You guys keep my going.
I had been so busy working on ornaments that I had pretty much let my exercise fall by the wayside. The last few days I'm back at it and I wonder why I let it go when I know how much BETTER I feel and how much more energy I have all day long when I just do it. Aghh
Thanks, that made me laugh out loud.
Much Love,

DDIL just sent me this. Their new Christmas pyjamas. I think they must have just got out of the bath, judging by Max's hair!
Can't wait to see them at Christmas.

Well my vacuum HAS been turned on yesterday, and I used it on the living room! Can you tell I hate cleaning?? Put the tree up, but will let the sons decorate it. I wrapped presents. We're talking small gifts now! Like two glitter nail polishes, and cuticle cream for daughter in-law, some tiger balm for middle son, a hotwheels car for eldest, and some chocolates for youngest! Nothing over $5 for each.
I was finally able to pay off my husbands nephew this month. Its crazy how it all started. In 2012 when we were told we had to get husband up to Oregon from California, we had his nephew drive the RV up, while I kept husband comfortable. Then in 2014, my Mother in-law was talking to him, and mentioned we had to file for bankruptcy. So he said, "they can pay me back now". Now he lives near Los Angeles, CA, quite well off. So I knew when he said it, it was in jest. But my Mother in-law relayed the info, saying we needed to start paying him back. I contacted him, and started a promissory note with pay amounts listed each month. Since we live month to month, its been a challenge let me tell ya! But I send a card, with a check every month. Back in 2012, he helped by paying for gas to get us up there, a hotel room that night, and also first and lasts rent for our apartment. It was 3K so you'd think he would've given us a heads up then, if he wanted us to pay that back. So no communication saying he got the promissory note way back when, but he cashes the checks. I told him ( in the Christmas card), to send me back the promissory note marked Paid in Full, back. I wish to not have my Mother in-law think I don't pay my debts! Family can be frustrating... Lol
Well time to vacuum!
Love ya ladies!

Wendy, Lace is beautiful! I love border collies - they are so smart. One of my prior dogs was a rescued blue merle border collie named Casper.
Angel is a mini Australian Shepherd. I adopted her from the breeder when she was 4. She had been kicked by a horse and suffered a broken hip and wasn’t going to be bred again. She too is a Velcro dog. I haven’t been able to teach her to shake - she will put her head in my hand for petting.

"Machka, how does your DH blow dry a whole cherry orchard?
The larger, wealthier orchards use helicopters ... flying back and forth quite low over the orchard. But they couldn't fly on either Saturday or Sunday because of the weather. They will likely be flying today because the rain has stopped, at least temporarily.
Some orchards have windmills ... somewhat smaller versions of what are used in wind farms. Those are often used to ward off frost, but can be used to dry things too.
My husband's orchard can't afford helicopters and windmills right now, so he modifies the sprayer so that it blows air, and he drives up and down the rows like he does when he is spraying ... only faster. He was able to do that on Saturday, but by Sunday we had so much rain he wasn't able to get into the orchard ... he would have bogged immediately. So we just had to trust that the rain spray would hold.
And fortunately this happened when it did. Only two varieties are ripe enough to be affected by the rain.
Today is drier and a bit windy so that's good.
We ended up with 94mm (3.7 inches) of rain over the weekend. That's double what we'd normally get in the month of December.
I'll also add ... cherries are the main Christmas fruit here. They are hugely popular, and most/all of the southern States have orchards. When I first came to Australia, and once I could work legally, my first job was in a cherry packing shed in Victoria, near where we lived. And my husband has been in orcharding for 12 years now ... apples and cherries mainly ... in both Victoria and Tasmania. We (Australia) also exports a massive quantity of cherries to Asia ... Hong Kong, Japan, etc.

Rye, I love your Christmas Kitty pics. I am feeling inspired to take some of my pets in Christmas hats now. LOL
Allie, I just couldn't live in a place where I couldn't have my animal friends to keep me company. They give sooo much love and expect so little in return. I would rather eat nothing and go nowhere and spend my money on a pet. My pets kept me alive when I had a broken heart. They know how to heal hearts. Obviously, you are old enough to weigh the drawbacks and benefits even in an uncertain financial climate. Just by owning your own place you will be in a much better position than someone who is renting. But you know all that, Blessings, Wendy2 -
Allie - I know!!! that's why I got Levi -- Will you/could you get custody of one of the dogs? or even a week at a time visit? then Tom could pay the vet bills and you would have the love??
Myself as much as you love the dogs I would not want joint custody or visitation because that just ties you to Tom in the long run and makes you continue to see him on a regular basis. If I couldn’t get the dog/dogs I’d say a tearful goodbye. Just mebut you are divorcing him. Why give him any opening to control you or affect your life?

Whew! Finally caught up with all the reading! lol Took awhile. I've had a couple of busy days so haven't had much of a chance to be reading, so when I finally go to it, there were several pages to get through.
Rori, so sorry to hear of your friends passing. I lost a very dear friend 14 years ago, she was 46. I still miss her a lot, there are just some things that I see and do and only she would understand. It is nice that her daughter gave you her plants, a little memory. I look at a few things that my friend gave me and it always brings a smile to my face when I remember getting them, nothing big, just little mementos, but they mean a lot to me.
Sue, so sorry to hear about your dog, it's so hard losing our furbabies.
Terry, Love the purple cast! Hope you heal fast!
Barbie and others, thank you for sharing your Christmas memories and what makes the season special for you. And what you do to make the season special! I do like the thought about is what I'm doing make things better for me. I have been trying something similar, asking myself if I really WANT to do that, or am I doing it because it's expected of me. I've managed to change my mindset about a few things because of that. Example: I may not want to go to the gym, but I do want to look after my health so going to the gym and working out makes me healthier so..... Off I go to exercise! lol
Felicia, my heart breaks for you. Don't let anyone tell you how you should be feeling, we do all grieve in our own ways and in our own time, you need to do it at your own pace and in your own way.
Rye, thanks so much for the photo of the kitties! They certainly do look like their dignity was injured! lol
Trying to get things back on track, November did not go as well as I hoped, but keeping my fingers crossed for December!
Hope everyone has a great day!

Its that time of year. If you wish to be on my Advent Angel, just send me a photo. Please no emails, or photocopies, because I don't have a printer. The face should be the size of a quarter. Send your pets too. I will give you my address just message me. Here's what she looks like so far:
To those that sent last year, thanks! Lenora's dog Cracker, is her face. It just seemed fitting, because of the size, and I miss her!
If you don't see your name on the garlands just send me a message and I'll make you a nameplate.
