WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR JANUARY 2018

Terry, cool name, quite original and unique.
I took Major with me today. He was a hit at the police station where he rolled over and wanted everyone to pet his tummy. Then I took him out to Castlecliff Beach for a walk on the sand. When we got back to the van, I had to wait for it to be totally cooled down so I could put more water in the radiator, as it has an undiagnosed problem. I am saving up to get it fixed.
I saw these two ladies searching the parking lot and looking under vehicles. They came up to the van and I asked them what they were looking for. They were visitors to my town and had lost their motel keys somewhere. So Major and I got out and helped them look but we didn't find the keys.
I asked them where they were from and then they asked me the same. They wanted to know how an American had ended up in a small town in NZ. I told them I'd met my husband on a blind date and we'd just celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary and had three kids and two grandkids. Literally, they both looked astonished and glanced at each other. "We thought you were in your twenties!" one said.
Take away from that encounter: sunglasses and a mini skirt and a van are essential Youthing tools!
Loving it! Wendy9 -
Lanette: Thank you so much for the broken brain links! I have gained a lot of support there for the practices I am following, and some new ideas for continuing good health. Just watched a segment on MS, but couldn't talk DH into watching it. He has MS and it could be of value to him, but he's wearing his "no" hat. :-
Wendy & Heather: Arrow has nice accommodations in comparison to many places I've seen. He has a large box stall with a roomy attached paddock. He spends his time out in the paddock beside the fence, side by side with a neighboring horse. They are often close enough to touch. He tends to get sour when he doesn't get enough attention and that has been the case lately. His owner has a husband with medical issues that have kept them both running to the hospital in Portland & I was not feeling well enough to go out and exercise him, either. I will be absent again in a couple of weeks while I travel to see my grandchildren. Which reminds me, I need to let my friend know that I'll be away for a couple of weeks. Poor old Arrow needs more attention than he is getting right now from either or both of us. My friend does an excellent job with feed, care, and cleanliness at the stable. I'm not sure how many horses are currently in residence there. I think she is about my age +/-. She loves horses and works hard to provide good care. I should have been out to see Arrow more often, but was under the weather for a while and didn't feel well enough to go. We're both doing the best we can with our personal situations. :ohwell:
Allie: Mr. Alfie is a cutie.
Karen: We're planning to find a new cleaner when we get back from our trip east to see our grandchildren.
Lisa: It sounds like you are superstitious, like me. I keep quiet about things I really want to have happen out of fear that I'll somehow jinx the situation. Keeping my fingers crossed for you. :flowerforyou:
Heather: I agree that our cleaner is too expensive. She doesn't do things as well as they need doing, either. Change is needed. :grumble:
Terry: Speaking of Rings is a great business name WTG!!!
Joyce: I'm glad you're finally feeling a bit better. Good news! :flowerforyou:
I'm starting to get excited about our upcoming trip to see kids and grandkids. We leave in only 6 days. There is still quite a bit to do, but we have the dog taken care of and need to get ourselves in order and pack. We'll solve the cleaner problem when we get back.

Hi Katla, thought of one more idea that might take some of the pressure off you as well as improve Arrow's attitude: If his owner agrees, maybe there is a horse-mad girl who hangs around the stable or in the neighborhood who would come and give him attention and/or ride him a couple days a week when you are not able to. THat is one of the reasons I continue to have students despite my Busy Bee schedule, because my horses love the attention they get from those horse-mad girls. I can go out riding, and a student will ride one my horses with me, so I am actually able to exercise two horses at once. Appeals to my multi-tasking get 100 things done at once side. LOL. If you don't actually know a teen with horse fever, I bet putting up a notice in a local store would scrounge some up. LOl Wendy2

I was at work from 9 to 5, teaching, prepping, and grading papers, but I still got in 9,500 steps. My commitment to 2018 is to continue living without sugar, to eat healthy, and to walk/jog/workout 6 days a week. Knowing I am fitter at 70 than in my 40s is no excuse to slack off.

I made jam.
It's busy setting right now so I won't know how it turned out till tomorrow. But ...
I made jam!!
So far, this is a year for "firsts".

Barbie - I love both those books. They are full of really good advice, backed up by real science. Plus humour. Plus they are not smug. I reread them both from time to time, mainly for the science bits. Aren't our bodies just amazing?!?!
For anyone who hasn't read them - YOUNGER NEXT YEAR FOR WOMEN and THINNER THIS YEAR. Exercise is the focus of the first one and gut health of the second. Some of the info is a little out of date, but the principle holds.
Another thing we talk about in this group is Mental Hygiene. Equally important.

Saturday -- While my husband was busy with the cherry orchard, I decided to get involved too ... and made cherry jam! My very first attempt at jam. I'll find out tomorrow if I was successful.
While I was doing that, I also put butter chicken on in the slow cooker ... chicken, lots of veg, chickpeas and a butter chicken sauce.
Then I went out for a bicycle ride and tackled some climbing.

Machka, have a scone for me please. my DD starts classes next week. She is taking Statistics, Java, Physics and Algebra. Good thing she quit her job. I think she is going to be very stressed. After this semester, she just has her internship over the summer and then she will graduate with her Associate’s degree. She is a late bloomer but I’m so gal she did it. She is on the Dean’s list and hopes this semester doesn’t bring down her GPA. Then she wants to find a job with benefits and will pay for her Bachelor’s.
Good for her!! I hope she continues to do well. It can be stressful, but also very rewarding.

Machka – interesting about not finding pectin, and jars easily, all of the grocery stores, and even many of the discount or hardware stores carry them here.
I did find pectin in three places. Two places had 50 gram packets (which is what I ended up using) and one had quite a large jar of it. But all the recipes talked about a much bigger variety and specifically a pectin for freezer jam. Neither of the two varieties I found referred to freezer jam at all. And I looked everywhere!
Although that said, I didn't check the health food stores. Maybe that's where I need to look.
One place also had sugar with pectin ... jam setting sugar. I got some of that too and when I added the sugar, I used a bit of it.
Speaking of sugar, the recipe called for an astronomically high amount of sugar!! I halved it. And even then, when I taste-tested it, it seemed really sweet.
Now I know that sugar is also needed for setting, so I hope it's OK and will set. I did the "set test" and that seemed all right.
As for jars, there were all kinds of glass jars for traditional jam, but nothing to go in the freezer. I was surprised! I finally found two sizes of a plastic jar with screw-on top. I got two 500 ml and one 1 litre container, and I've filled all three!
I've got 2 litres of cherry jam setting on the counter!!
I hope it's good after all that!

I try to walk each day - I don't huff and puff by any means, but walk at a fairly good clip. And do strength training every other day, including some jumping jacks. I generally work up a sweat by the end of the workout. I'd like to do something to get my blood really pumping (high intensity) on the off days. Suggestions - running in place? More jumping jacks?
Climbing stairs
Hiking uphill
Running outside
Cycling ... especially intervals or cycling uphill
Join a netball team and play netball with them once a week (netball is really popular here in Australia), so if it isn't popular where you are, perhaps another team might work
Zumba or other classes at the gym
Skipping/jumping rope

Snowshoeing
Here you go ... here's a list of sports. Maybe one of them will appeal to you.
Obviously some on that list won't burn that many calories (card games) but others will.

Yeah! I’ve finally decided on a name for a jewelry business. There is no other website or e-mail with this name and I will own it. DH is setting up the email and website address in my name. Now I just have to create a website and take pictures of my jewelry.
The name will be “Speaking in Rings”.
I’m so happy to have finally made a decision. Also, I just have to do a few more tweeks to the design of my business card and I can have them printed. Right now the S in the word speaking is one of my bracelets shaped like an S.

Regarding coffee ... I drink 1-4 cups before 4 pm each day. Black.
Regarding salad dressing and other sauces ... don't care for them. However, I don't mind so much when I prepare something in the slow cooker with a sauce like I did today.
Regarding gluten ... I love gluten-free chocolate cake. Mmmmmm!! But other than that, no. And in fact, prior to joining MFP and starting to lose weight, I hardly ever ate bread. Didn't really like it. Within weeks of joining MFP, I started craving bread something fierce. So I started eating bread. Now I have 1-2 slices a day.
Regarding housecleaners ... still thinking about getting one. We're loving our gardener! He's come by twice now and it is so good to come home to a neat yard.

Another 'gut' book worth looking at.
On another note - mental hygiene. I like Barbie's quote. What value does this add to my life?
Too many of us, myself included, often hang on to things that are no longer serving us, through a misplaced sense of commitment or fear of change. That includes people, hobbies, jobs and routines as well as physical objects. Often they hold us back and drag us down and drain our energy. And often they are adding little value to our lives.
Just this week at yoga we finished the session with a visualisation of climbing a mountain and then writing down something we wanted to shed, or leave behind us, and then we burnt it on a fire on top of the mountain. My word was RELUCTANCE. Then we faced the view and the wind and received a new word. The word I received was EMBRACE.
I have done that visualisation again at a few sticky moments this week and it has been a great help to me. I am ready to bring new things into my life.

Allie - Alfie's such a cutie, saw the pics. Thinking about you and your dad.
Trying not to worry about the fact that we're living in a military family that will literally not get a paycheck at end of month if they don't get the government shutdown straightened out. Trying not to worry about the closing on the warehouse next week. Trying not to worry about the fact that our daughter is out in the field all next week, so we have sole responsibility for the grandkids for the first extended period of time. So many, many things I cannot change right now. So, am taking my own advice, borrowed from "What Mentally Strong People Don't Do," that I wrote about this morning:- Decide what’s within your control.
- Decide what’s not within your control, but that you can affect.
- Name what you’re worrying about.
- Decide what’s unhelpful thinking and what will actually help.
- Decide what you can do and write it out.
- Create phrases for yourself to remind yourself what you can do.
So, while we can, Corey and I are going to go down to the beach this morning, around Wilmington or Myrtle Beach somewhere, get a hotel room for the night and just be ourselves, not "Gramma and Pa" for one night. I think it will be enormously good for us, and bring us back to the family in the right frame of mind, instead of grim determination for survival. There is so much joy in this situation, but it can easily get buried under the day-to-day, nitnoid stuff.
Love y'all,

Good evening friends. Played 9 holes of golf. It was cold and windy so didn’t finish 18. Went to dentist for cleaning and checkup Monday. Today bit into a honey graham cracker and broke a tooth. What the heck. Monday everything looked good and healthy.
Lisa- also holding my breath for the closing.
Katla-I think of you when I go to yoga. I am hoping for that good feeling but right now it is a bit hard. I know I need more practice.
Allie- Allie is soooo cute. I know he is a lot of company for you.
Better get off computer.

Hi ladies, thanks for all the comments on the business name. My plan is to have everything in place so that when I retire maybe making jewelry will supplement my income. Also, so many people have asked me if I have a website. They have even asked DD when they have seen her wearing a piece.
DD is off with her father to Montreal to see a car show. They are both into cars and she use to be a mechanic. It will be good to be just DH and I. Going to go out to lunch then check to see if any of my jewelry sold at the jewelry store I have it in. Fingers crossed that I sold at least one piece. Property taxes are due soon and I don’t have much saved yet.
Thinking of Valentines Day coming up and what I can get DH. Think I’ll make him the hamburger green bean pie he loves . Certainly not the healthiest thing to eat but he loves it and I haven’t made it for him in ages.
Well time to get up and get going.

Katla - Terry Wahls had a remarkable recovery from MS according to the Broken Brain interview-I kind of wanted to see her walk But even arresting the progression of a disease like that is a win. I looked her up on the internet. She does private consultations including testing, etc. for $7997 and less. Whew! But I think the tips given by her and others were very good and like you said, it's validation that you're doing things right for your health.
Regarding the price of cleaners - the going rate around here is from $17 to $25 per hour, depending on whether the cleaners bring their own products, vacuums, etc. A $17 per hour one might want a 4 or 5 hour minimum, whereas a more expensive one might only have a 3 hour minimum.

That’s great that you made the jam. I’m sure it will be wonderful. It’s a lot of work. I can remember my mother making it.
It was more work than the recipe suggested, mainly because cutting the cherries takes so much time. But as freezer jam, there's none of the boiling jars and wax stuff and all that business.
Once I had the cherries cut (6 cups of them, without pits!), I added the lemon juice, half the sugar they suggested, let it sit for 10 min. While waiting I boiled a kettle and poured boiling water into my containers to rinse them. Then I popped the fruit into the microwave for about 6 minutes. Meanwhile brought the pectin to a boil, then added the fruit, boiled for 4 min, did the set test which worked, and ladled into containers.
It's all sitting for 24 hours now to set ... and I'm impatient at this point because it doesn't look like it is setting as quickly as I think it should, but it has only been 8 hours, not 24.
If it hasn't set by 24 hours, apparently I'm to add more sugar and reboil it. I'd rather not do that, so I'm hoping it is reasonably solid by then. And then most of it goes in the freezer, and we use and refrigerate one container.
Tomorrow, I'm planning to make scones for the very first time. Trouble is ... my husband has made them on a number of occasions (although not for a long time), so the pressure is on!!

Welcome. When I was still teaching, I read something in one of my professional journals that changed my life. I found most of the professional suggestions overwhelming but one person said that she came home from work every day, changed her shoes and went for a walk for an hour. I started doing that immediately and continued that practice until I retired. Now I walk in the morning and routinely get a lot of steps before I take my shower and prepare for the day. I hope you'll keep coming back and join in the the conversation.

Did Jari Love Get Ripped 1000 DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do Body By Bethany DVD
Put chicken in the crockpot for us to have later in the week. Also did a load of laundry and have it in the dryer right now.
Wendy - Major sure knows who to charm!!! That was very nice of you to help those ladies try to find their keys even if you weren't successful. I certainly agree with those ladies -- you DO look like you're in your 20's
M - To be honest, I'm wondering why you couldn't make the jam without any of the sugar. The fruit is sweet enough. I'll be interested to see if you need to add the sugar to have it set up properly. I hope not. Maybe more of the sugar/pectin????
Regarding coffee - has anyone tried using those individual coffee filters that you get in a hotel in a Mister Coffee. I'm not a coffee drinker (neither is Vince) so we wouldn't be able to tell if it was good or not. How does it turn out? Denise won't drink decaf but most Newcomers only want decaf. This way I can have both
Allie - while we were shoveling snow, I thought of you and how you used to shovel all the time and now you don't have to shovel at all.
Guess I should go to Aldi today. I won't be able to go Monday (when I usually go after exercise) since I need to pick up a platter of an antipasto. I had no idea whatsoever what went into one, so I just ordered it. We have a Newcomer "Destination Dinner" Monday night (what a weird time to have one) which we're going to.

Hello ladies. I have a job! I haven't worked for four years since I had a stroke. I will be supervising and chatting with children aged 4-11 years. The Welsh government have a Breakfast Club scheme, initially set up to provide a healthy breakfast for children from poorer families who would otherwise have none. It is free to all in Wales and used by a lot of working mothers. I will help serve cereal and toast and then spend time with the children until school begins. I have 7 grandchildren so am used to little ones and looking forward to it. It will mean an early start Monday to Friday, I will have to get up at 6am in order to be ready and to walk to the school for 8am. It will be extra money for me as I don't have any income. I sold my house, divorced my husband and have just enough money to live on from my share of the proceeds of sale until I receive the state pension in 5 years time.
Hope this is not too long and boring for you all!
All the best
