Do diets work?

Just to be clear about how awful it is for our health to routinely eat foods that aren't on your approved list:
I lost 50 lbs. over about 18 months, I've been in maintenance for almost 4 months and am doing fine at that. While losing weight (and to a lesser degree now) I ate packaged meals for lunch every day (and sometimes dinner too, due to time constraints and because I like them) and I indulged in fast food and sweets on a more than occasional basis. These foods contained protein, fat and carbs, and I learned to choose lower calorie, higher protein varieties. I also ate fresh vegetables and fruit, healthy fats, lean protein and other foods that contributed to meeting my nutritional needs. During most of that time I was doing no more exercise than riding my bike on the weekends since I had a 4 hour daily commute.
My health stats went from generally terrible in all areas to well within normal, and continue to stay there while I eat a diet of foods that meet my nutrition goals, taste good and satisfy my appetite.12 -

So are you in the calories don't matter camp too? Because that is what the OP is trying to argue. Noone is saying it's not a lifestyle change, he is claiming that it's what you eat not how much you eat, so apparently we can all eat as much raw vegan food as we like and we'll never gain weight.
4 Chicken Breast no carbs lean 120 grams quality protein or 1 burger 35 grams protein 60 grams saturated fat - 100 grams sugar - its WHAT you eat
You're absolutely right. One of those things is a balanced meal that hits all your nutrient needs. The other is basically pure protein.30 -

yep - that's your call - I had a 2 chicken breast and a salad last night - I'll die happy too - and most likey after you
You seem to want to pick on others because they do not believe as you do.
As long as my carb, protein and fat macros are spot on, I am losing/maintaining weight while having the energy fueled by yummy food to enjoy a happy life. x10 -

Probably happier than if you had eaten plain grilled chicken breasts and an egg white omelette. Sounds like pure sadness.
Its more sad you equate food with happiness
It's sad that you are criticizing a stranger for doing what works for them. Who are you or anyone to judge someone else.
It sucks to watch someone try so hard to run up hill with a 50 pound rock dragging behind them when all they need to do and cut the rope and they will be much more successful
lol - I didn't realize we hung out in real life and you knew anything about me. You should give up, once you start personal attacks - there's nothing else you can say that will ever be remotely credible.15 -

I'm honestly not sure if you're trolling us or if you legit don't understand what we're talking about.
What does the fact that fast food burgers or Oreos aren't in your opinion nutrient dense have to do with whether or not "diets work" or calories determine weight loss.
We are saying that you can eat meat and dairy and Oreos and fast food on occasion and still lose weight and be healthy.
What are you saying?
Shoot, you're right - I let myself get dragged into the giant sucking hole of fanatical illogic. :grumble:1 -

Yes, I like my food to actually taste good, and there’s nothing wrong with that. If you can eat boring tasting food, go for it, but I’d rather enjoy what I’m eating.
Yeah I HATE Lemon chicken and smoked salmon I hate peppers and mushrooms - ewwwwwwwwwwwww OOOOOOOOK
We were talking about chicken breasts and egg white omelettes. I don’t recall ever making a comment about any of the foods you just mentioned.
And I’m not sure if you know this, but people who eat hamburgers and Oreos, can ALSO eat lemon chicken, smoked salmon, peppers, and mushrooms. I know, it’s shocking!20 -

Impossible to take this kind of disordered thinking seriously. He can have all the "fun" he wants. It's only upsetting if you take it seriously. And I. Just. Can't.12 -
Irishman1970 wrote: »crabbybrianna wrote: »I had 2 hamburgers for dinner last night (homemade) and an Oreo this morning. I must be pretty close to death.
closer than the person who ate Chicken breast a vinaigrette salad and an eggwhite omelette this morning with peppers
I just entered that into my food diary. 301 Cals. Eat that 3 times a day and I'm at 903 Cals. Eating that, I'll die well before I do eating 2 hamburgers and an Oreo - which, using McDonald's hamburgers - is 555 Cals, for 1665 Cals in a day, if one were to eat that for 3 meals.
Of course, I wouldn't just eat that one thing for all 3 meals. I might have a burger and fries for one, then my egg sandwich for one, and probably meat and veg for the other. So, overall, a fairly balanced day, especially considering I wouldn't eat the burger every day.
So yeah, strawmen are stupid.17 -
Irishman1970 wrote: »too funny to watch people here defend eating crap as long as its in the calorie context
Eating solely chicken breasts (which is what you seem to be suggesting) is neither healthy nor sustainable. Eating a variety of food (including chicken breast and pizza) is both healthy and sustainable.
Yeah, the woos seem appropriate.17 -

you do understand context right - how much you can eat one food vs another? when you talk about diet not working try to understand satiation and nutrition

Indeed ... poking fun at others and what works for most of MFP is not worth taking seriously x5 -

Hey feel free to eat however you want I really don't care it doesn't effect me in the slightest - but people post why diets done't work - and they want help i will respond - diets don't work because they are calorie focused and not nutrient focused - they focus losing weight and not being fit - plenty of skinny unfit people out there but not alot of fit overweight people
And right back to find me a thread where nobody ever responded to the OP that eating fewer calories than they expend will cause them to lose weight, regardless of what they choose to eat, and of course meeting nutrition goals is important for health.
No thread ever consisted of everyone telling OP living on oreos and chips is just fine. You are (deliberately) conflating the advice "eat what you like" with advising people to ignore nutrition, which apparently consists of eating just the foods on your approved list. This isn't a debate, it's you making a pathetic attempt to grab all the attention for as long as possible by posting the same drivel over and over while people bang their heads against a brick wall.7 -

looks do not equate to fitness - many bodybuilders out there who are far from fit

You're the same guy who said a single hamburger dinner will make someone die earlier and a (in numbers 1) Oreo is crap for you.12 -

Well, it is definitely better than before. (Before pic.) I hold a state record in deadlift now, can knock out pull-ups, etc.
You're throwing a lot of shade. What are your qualifications?
