Do diets work?

That's okay. I'm used to it by now.5

Well do you plan on keeping your calories at the level that it took you to loose that weight!! I’m betting on your body fighting you to eat that back!! Your going to have to depend on willpower the rest of your life!! Their is a better way!! Eat a healthy diet!! Always being hungry is a terrible way to live!! Believe it , you can eat more and keep your weight down!! Cut out the fat!! Or cut down on the saturated fat!! That’s mainly in meat and dairy!! And loose the oils!!
I'm never hungry!!! I lost weight counting calories!! Eating meat and dairy! Now I've been maintaining for 2 years!!! I still count but I'm paying less and less attention to it every month!!! Once i was at a healthy weight i increased my calories to maintain!!!! You can eat meat and dairy without eating alot of fat!! My body never fought back it was thrilled to be eating at a more appropriate calorie level and losing weight! You should really stop yelling at people and keep an open mind!!! Have a wonderful day!!36 -
well I guess my weight loss was a sham too since I eat meat and dairy. I have no issues maintaining my weight if I want to. right now I dont want to and I did lose almost 8 lbs last month. sure some of it may have been water weight but it was still a loss. I got fat eating more fruits and veggies and being less active. I can eat a whole pineapple myself..set 300g or more of cherries in front of me and I can eat all of them. I can eat fruit until the cows come home and still be hungry. my diet is now more balanced and I still eat meat and dairy. fat doesnt make a person fat though and some fat is essential for many bodily functions.
oh they do have fat free, low fat and reduced fat dairy products and there are meats low in fat too. so no no one has to cut out dairy or meat unless they have an allergy, intolerance or some other health issue to where they have to avoid it.

Also! My diary is open! I probably eat more calories then most people on this thread! I’m maintaining my weight! I don’t exercise! And I’m 65 I believe that I should be gaining weight eating that many calories!! But I won’t!! Never have ! Why!! Why do sone people of the same sex and same age and same activity level gain weight eating half the calories of me!! I believe it’s the food! Not how much food!!
for someone who doesnt exercise you are tracking them or syncing them because its showing exercise activity. and your fat is way too low in my opinion. I have a health issue where I have to watch my fat and its more than what you are taking in. oh and I eat fast food at least twice a month and my cholesterol is in the normal ranges for the first time in 15 years. I still have what I want in moderation and yep my blood work is better now compared to before which weight loss has a lot to do with that. my cholesterol is tested every 3 months so are other things.
you also havent been logging very long(first entry I find is feb 8th, so while you are maintaining your weight ,doesnt mean 3 months from now that will be the case as a lot of your entries are off and most things are not weighed so chances are you are eating more than you think. and if you end up being in a surplus those excess carbs will be stored as fat too.https://bodyrecomposition.com/nutrition/nutrient-intake-nutrient-storage-and-nutrient-oxidation.html/8 -
does it not depend how you define "diet"?
A Diet to me is a temporary thing, my diet describes what I eat - my dietary habits - how I live.3 -
I didn't go on a starvation diet and I eat plenty of meat and dairy and my diet ( noun meaning long term eating style) bears very little resemblance to traditional Asian diets - I lost weight to goal in 2013 and have maintained since.
And I'm certainly not always hungry.
If my body is fighting back it's not putting up a very good battle.3 -
I don’t have to watch my Calories!! You’ll have to
So why are you logging your food on a calorie counting website? and from your log, you're eating at maintenance, not really sure what you're trying to prove here.
I didn't gain weight because of the choice of foods I eat, I gained weight because I was eating the same amount of food when I became less active after an injury. I have lost and maintained since I started counting calories.
Like I pointed out earlier, you can eat "healthy foods" and still gain weight like my friend who is vegan.
As for those in the Asia, I work a lot with Filipinos, do you know how prevalent diabetes and high blood pressure is there?13 -
I will add, yes, I do have to watch my calories.
I'm ok with that - as I have mentioned many times on here, I log very loosely but enough to keep myself accountable and to keep enough of an eye on my intake.
I don't find that onerous or difficult at all.0 -
Read up on your Newton
Hi! Engineer here! Using exclamations, since you seem to like them so much! I'm quite familiar with Sir Isaac Newton's work! Of course, Newton's work didn't revolve around thermodynamics and energy conservation! He was primarily - although not only - involved in the study of forces and motion!
In fact, the laws of physics - including the laws of thermodynamics - don't just apply to closed systems! They apply to literally everything in the known universe! Probably things in unknown universes, too!38 -
Diets work if you follow them and they create a calorie deficit. It's usually the "follow them" part that makes them fail.7

If we're looking at your diary....why doy you think you'd gain weight? Everyday is basically maintenance, except for one that's close to a 1000 cal deficit..... I also really doubt 2500-2700 is more than most people on this thread too, especially those who are maintaining.12 -

He appears to think we all eat 1200 calories of McDonald's and Twinkies a day. Not so, my friend, not so!19 -

Yep, I am averaging around 2200 per day gross and losing 1lb per week.5 -
Look at the populations in Asia! They don’t have to go on starvation diets! It’s because of what they have been eating all their lives! And not eating! Lots of rice and vegetable and fruit! And what their not eating is lots of meat and dairy! Having to loose so much weight means that you knowingly new you were going to gain weight by eating to much and did it anyway! I don’t believe that!! You just didn’t know better because in this country we eat a bad diet!! We should eat like the poor people of china! Not like the poor people of the USA! The poor here eat fatty fast food because their to busy working 2 jobs to pay the rent! Or are in food deserts it’s not your fault that you gained so much weight! You got bad advise from people only looking out for big corporations like McDonald’s saying it’s okay to eat bad food as long as you eat it in moderation!! The department of agriculture isn’t looking out for you !! Their looking out for McDonald’s! Or they would tell you that tge food their selling you is not healthy at all!! Not even in moderation!!

What do you know about Asian diets? Let me guess, you watched "Forks Over Knives" and think it's science, didn't you? You know, it's a lot of countries and cultures and not some small homogenous village. The Chinese you speak of not only eat differently they live and work differently, or did you miss that fact? They are far more active on average and get more exercise than most Americans do but you ignore these facts because it doesn't fit with your tirade against "diet and exercise".
Sorry, but you are preaching a quasi-religious faith here of orthorexia not anything based on science.14 -
The laws of physics that you refer to was in a closed environment!! We are not that
Please explain how an open system vs closed system differs here and what that specifically means for energy balance. There are certainly difference between open and closed systems but I question whether you know what this actually means.8 -

No, you don't eat that much, and age doesn't slow your BMR that much. Your maintenance is my cutting intake and there we have people of similar characteristics here that eat more than you without gaining. You really need to do some research because it's obvious that you have a lot of misconceptions.10 -

Why would he keep a food diary if calories don't matter?14 -

To be fair, there are people on here who use MFP to track macros, but don't look at calories.
Not sure if that is what this guy is doing, but it's possible.6 -

So are you in the calories don't matter camp too? Because that is what the OP is trying to argue. Noone is saying it's not a lifestyle change, he is claiming that it's what you eat not how much you eat, so apparently we can all eat as much raw vegan food as we like and we'll never gain weight.6 -

We woo'd that those are the only choices.25 -
It's all about dose and context dude. To post 2 random pics out of context is ridiculous.21
-
But who wants to eat four chicken breasts? Ugh. Why can't I have a chicken breast with a salad on Monday and cheeseburger on Tuesday?
If your calories are on point, you don't need to eat like some clean-eating saint every day. You can make yummy stuff fit sometimes.23 -
