Do diets work?

For sake of argument, you are already using the highest octane.
Why can't you meet all nutritious needs while eating processed foods? And, everything is processed lol. You dig up a potato - it's processed by time you eat it. Cheeseburger has iron, protein, potassium, calcium, plus other vitamins.
It's cool, you do you - but maybe be more open minded instead of downgrading all of the efforts other's have made while "dieting" and eating "junk" foods. This kind of talk is confusing to people who are just starting out at losing weight. If they were to stumble on your posts saying how it's all junk and you have to eat chicken breast, how long do you think they would last? Not long.
It's not realistic for majority of people.17 -

If it's something I am eating it's part of my diet (noun) like anything else I eat?
I am not even sure what you are trying to argue.
I'm pretty sure the burger would stack up a lot more diverse nutritionally than the chicken breasts, which are nothing but protein and a little fat. If you're saying the burger derives nutrition from carbs as well, why yes it does. What's wrong with that? There's nothing wrong with sugar if you have no medical limitations and it doesn't crowd out you other nutrition and calorie goals. And before you go to a comparison of chicken breasts and twinkies, nobody here is buying that anyone lives on twinkies alone, anymore than they live on burgers alone.
the OP asked why diets don;t work - because diets focus on weight loss NOT fitness - fitness is a lifestyle where your food choice are paramount - indulge every so often but it should not be a consistent thing in your life
Actually the Mods made the post title, this post was actually split from another one where OP was actually trying to suggest to someone who was asking about Slimfast that the only way to lose weight was to eat plant based. Like I said already he is arguing that we don't need to count calories, which you've already agreed is not the case, then added a bunch of strawman nonsense.11 -

"diets" don't work or fail for some people, because they get too restrictive and cut out foods they enjoy (speaking extremely generally). so your idea of eating chicken breast and kale or whatever, is a recipe for failure. So yes, that diet would fail for vast majority.12

Can you please define the difference between the two? A "6 dollar burger" has been part of my "diet" for nearly 20 years. Since I can remember, I've always left room in my "diet" to fit in a fast food meal for my Friday lunch.
thus "every once in a while ok" you said FRIDAY
Yes, but you also said it shouldn't be part of my diet. Which is it?
Once in a while is OK, or it shouldn't be part of a diet. This is what everyone you're arguing with is talking about....context and dosage.
again I said "the OP asked why diets don't work - because diets focus on weight loss NOT fitness - fitness is a lifestyle where your food choice are paramount - indulge every so often but it should not be a consistent thing in your life"
with fitness you can indulge every so often but it is not part of your "diet" its an anomaly to your diet a deviation from that which you normally do
I guess I still don't fully agree.
Diets don't work (for some/most people) because they jump on whatever fad diet is currently being chucked around the internet, WAYYYY overly restrict both their caloric intake along with foods they allow themselves to eat never learning how to properly moderate their intake between nutritious low cal choices and fitting that burger in. The same thing happens with fitness too. So many people jump straight in the deep in on Jan 1, completely over do it, burn themselves out, and fall into their previous way(s).
With food, they overly restrict to the point they can't take it anymore and fall into the habits they had before. It doesn't really have anything to do with fitness (although fitness is great). Changing your diet is just as much a lifestyle change as fitness is. I've seen many people lose weight, and keep it off, because they learned how to moderate their intake.10 -
I had 2 hamburgers for dinner last night (homemade) and an Oreo this morning. I must be pretty close to death.27

I'm honestly not sure if you're trolling us or if you legit don't understand what we're talking about.
What does the fact that fast food burgers or Oreos aren't in your opinion nutrient dense have to do with whether or not "diets work" or calories determine weight loss.
We are saying that you can eat meat and dairy and Oreos and fast food on occasion and still lose weight and be healthy.
What are you saying?14 -

you can ALWAYS go off a diet - fitness is different - you can lose 50 pound and still be unfit
Obviously, but I never brought fitness in to this conversation. I was sticking strictly to dieting. You don't need to be fit to lose weight - that's solely diet.
However, eating "clean" foods or foods that are not "junk/crap" by your definition - you can still be overweight. Being overweight is unhealthy. So what's your point.. ?16 -

I would be willing to bet that most of the best bodybuilders (who routinely eat what you call crap as recovery meals) would disagree with your definition of 'fitness'.13 -

closer than the person who ate Chicken breast a vinaigrette salad and an eggwhite omelette this morning with peppers
This is very disordered thinking. If you want to be extreme, sure - if you eat butter and nothing but butter, you may have a point. But eating foods that are nutritious are killing you? That kind of talk leads to disordered eating habits.19 -

That’s not how it works. Time isn’t taken off of your life because you didn’t eat the most nutrient dense food possible every time you ate.26 -

I have read it, and I've obviously replied based on that. It doesn't make sense. You're unwillingly to see outside your own bubble. As I said before - if that's how you want to live your life.. great you do you. But don't condemn other people and say they are killing themselves by eating processed foods. That's literally insane.
You're telling all of us who have been successful diet that we aren't really successful because a cheeseburger is bringing us closer to death. Seriously, you are so extreme it's a little unnerving.14 -

I had eggs, cheese, bacon and sausage for brekky with heavy whipping crème in my coffee. I will have a triple bacon cheeseburger after the gym. If I am gonna die soon, I am gonna die happy x18

Probably happier than if you had eaten plain grilled chicken breasts and an egg white omelette. Sounds like pure sadness.20 -

Its more sad you equate food with happiness
It's sad that you are criticizing a stranger for doing what works for them. Who are you or anyone to judge someone else.18 -

Yes, I like my food to actually taste good, and there’s nothing wrong with that. If you can eat boring tasting food, go for it, but I’d rather enjoy what I’m eating.15 -

LOL orthorexia - nice new word of the day for you?
Nah, just a great opportunity to utilize it!20 -

Her response was i was in the calories don't matter - 1 I never said 2. my thoughts are nutrient dense food is better for you than non nutrient dense foot - Grilled chicken is better for you than a dollar burger
Nope I asked if you were in the calories don't matter camp, I didn't assume you were, as you steam-rollered into the thread without knowing what the thread was about. This is the same roundabout you were on in another thread, just keep repeating the same stuff in a different order that has little to do with the original post or it's context.
