Do diets work?

Well, just look at it another way, what is crap and what is clean? Both those terms depend on who you are talking to. Your clean chicken breasts are pretty dirty to a vegan and if it's not free range organic and anointed in holy oil by others.
Again, we get a lot of people who bring in these straw arguments about "eating crap" without having any idea what constitutes what and why/20 -

If it's something I am eating it's part of my diet (noun) like anything else I eat?
I am not even sure what you are trying to argue.
I'm pretty sure the burger would stack up a lot more diverse nutritionally than the chicken breasts, which are nothing but protein and a little fat. If you're saying the burger derives nutrition from carbs as well, why yes it does. What's wrong with that? There's nothing wrong with sugar if you have no medical limitations and it doesn't crowd out you other nutrition and calorie goals. And before you go to a comparison of chicken breasts and twinkies, nobody here is buying that anyone lives on twinkies alone, anymore than they live on burgers alone.17 -
Irishman1970 wrote: »But who wants to eat four chicken breasts? Ugh. Why can't I have a chicken breast with a salad on Monday and cheeseburger on Tuesday?
If your calories are on point, you don't need to eat like some clean-eating saint every day. You can make yummy stuff fit.
1 burger (1 burger) is 50% of your calories for the day and its *kitten* food - then you are are wondering why you have cravings? and you start to binge at 9pm
THAT is why diets don;t work
The conclusion is so far from the premise they aren't even in the same country. Diets, and here you mean specifically weight loss diets I'm sure, do work. It's when you come off them that they fail, but then that's not the diet that's the lifestyle. So in reality it's habits and lifestyles you need to address in the long term.

I'm not sure what the cost of the burger has to do with anything. If the price goes up to $8, will that alter the nutritional value?

Mmmmm I have a double or triple burger with cheese and bacon a few times a week ... still losing weight. Also had beer and Girl Scout cookies, keeping within my calories, and still losing weight. My $6 bratwursts are yummy too9

Can you please define the difference between the two? A "6 dollar burger" has been part of my "diet" for nearly 20 years. Since I can remember, I've always left room in my "diet" to fit in a fast food meal for my Friday lunch.
thus "every once in a while ok" you said FRIDAY
Yes, but you also said it shouldn't be part of my diet. Which is it?
Once in a while is OK, or it shouldn't be part of a diet. This is what everyone you're arguing with is talking about....context and dosage.4 -

Good to know you know nothing about engines, fuel, and efficiency, either.28 -

For sake of argument, you are already using the highest octane.
Why can't you meet all nutritious needs while eating processed foods? And, everything is processed lol. You dig up a potato - it's processed by time you eat it. Cheeseburger has iron, protein, potassium, calcium, plus other vitamins.
It's cool, you do you - but maybe be more open minded instead of downgrading all of the efforts other's have made while "dieting" and eating "junk" foods. This kind of talk is confusing to people who are just starting out at losing weight. If they were to stumble on your posts saying how it's all junk and you have to eat chicken breast, how long do you think they would last? Not long.
It's not realistic for majority of people.17 -

the OP asked why diets don;t work - because diets focus on weight loss NOT fitness - fitness is a lifestyle where your food choice are paramount - indulge every so often but it should not be a consistent thing in your life
Actually the Mods made the post title, this post was actually split from another one where OP was actually trying to suggest to someone who was asking about Slimfast that the only way to lose weight was to eat plant based. Like I said already he is arguing that we don't need to count calories, which you've already agreed is not the case, then added a bunch of strawman nonsense.11 -
"diets" don't work or fail for some people, because they get too restrictive and cut out foods they enjoy (speaking extremely generally). so your idea of eating chicken breast and kale or whatever, is a recipe for failure. So yes, that diet would fail for vast majority.12

again I said "the OP asked why diets don't work - because diets focus on weight loss NOT fitness - fitness is a lifestyle where your food choice are paramount - indulge every so often but it should not be a consistent thing in your life"
with fitness you can indulge every so often but it is not part of your "diet" its an anomaly to your diet a deviation from that which you normally do
I guess I still don't fully agree.
Diets don't work (for some/most people) because they jump on whatever fad diet is currently being chucked around the internet, WAYYYY overly restrict both their caloric intake along with foods they allow themselves to eat never learning how to properly moderate their intake between nutritious low cal choices and fitting that burger in. The same thing happens with fitness too. So many people jump straight in the deep in on Jan 1, completely over do it, burn themselves out, and fall into their previous way(s).
With food, they overly restrict to the point they can't take it anymore and fall into the habits they had before. It doesn't really have anything to do with fitness (although fitness is great). Changing your diet is just as much a lifestyle change as fitness is. I've seen many people lose weight, and keep it off, because they learned how to moderate their intake.10 -
I had 2 hamburgers for dinner last night (homemade) and an Oreo this morning. I must be pretty close to death.27
