So I ended up texting the guy as he wanted to go for drinks. i told him I was taking a break from alcohol and he has gone silent. I am fine with that. I figured he went quiet before and there is a probably a reason we did not continue seeing each other. I need to continue not drinking right now. Tomorrow is 30 days and I commit to not drinking in June as well.
Well, he made it easy for you. You wouldn't want someone like that:) You want someone who is proud of you and supportive. At least, it was in the early stages of dating you found out. Congrats on day 30!3 -

@lorib642 Awesome job! Keep it up! xo3

Nice!! That took strength and commitment. If I were in that situation it is what I SHOULD do to shut the door early but that is not something I have mastered yet. I like leaving the option open until the last minute which does not always end going the way I want it to.4 -
@janejellyroll - "It's like addressing your engine check light by putting a piece of duct tape over it." Well said. Sometimes when that wine is calling my name I try to imagine how it's going to change anything and, more particularly, how I'm going to feel after I drink. There's a little bit of visualization involved, not to be too woo, when I imagine myself washing the wine glass and kind of feeling annoyed with myself, realizing there was just no need for me to drink at all.
Yes, when I'm feeling stressed or distressed and wanting to drink, I've been really forcing myself to answer "What will change if I have this drink?"
Nothing will change. I'll just have alcohol in me.
I like your trick of visualizing washing the wine glass.6 -
@JulieAL1969 i found one of the groups you mentioned. I got placed in one of the competitor groups. So get ready for some (friendly) competition!
Also, thank you for keeping this going. I know it helps for a lot of us!6 -

So happy you found the group! It's very motivating. Love to have a friendly competition!
Love this thread! I need it more than ever. We are all so good for each other!2 -
Last night, we went downtown to a beautiful rooftop bar. I had a few vodkas and club soda drinks. Don't feel horrible today. But still shouldn't have indulged because it defeats my purpose to live a clean, healthy, clear headed life. So, I'm back to day 1. May rejoin The Alcohol Experiment. I'm tired of my own excuses (haha) of why I'll just indulge one more time.
On a positive note, I dont feel badly like I did having that wine the other night. That was an awful feeling.
Happy Weekend everyone! And to all who are in the military or were in the military, thank you for your service. Xo

You probably react badly to the tannins in wine that are not present in vodka. This is what is dumb about me. I know how to drink with very little hangover. Why didn't I spend that time figuring out I shouldn't be drinking instead of how to get away with it?
The tannins are somewhat common knowledge. I won't share my other tricks as it would be counter-productive to this thread.
Happy Memorial Day to All and a special thanks to current and past members of our armed forces.3 -
Happy Memorial Day weekend US friends! We are on a camping (RV) trip with friends which historically would mean all day and night drinking. Started off pretty low key last night as I decided not to have beers during set up and just wait till dinner to open some wine. I drank about half a bottle with dinner and sitting by the campfire but switched to a cup of decaf before bed.
Woke up this morning feeling refreshed and relaxed looking at the river (We are right on the banks of the Mississippi). After my coffee I’m going to take a walk and explore the campground. I’m sure about lunch time the temptation will strike again for the day drinking but I’m feeling good so far.
Have a great weekend everyone!6 -

You're funny! I was thinking "I wonder what the tips are for no hangover?" But then I thought, "no alcohol". That's the tip:)

We are two peas in a pod. Sadly, I too know what is best (at least for me personally) to not get hangovers. The crushing headaches from the tannins in wine are exactly why I can’t get into wine.3 -
I just hear Nathan Lane in The Bird Cage shrieking “TANNINS??!!!”
Have a great, successful weekend, all.3 -
I could never handle red wine, but was fine with white, which might have something to do with tannins.1

This week I finished 6 months of training for a 50 km run which will be in 2 weeks.
On Friday I did my last very long run, 26 km. (I'd done 38 km the Friday before.)
Today I bought myself a box of fresh flowers and celebrated with a drink...
Of alcohol-removed bubby.
Roll on two weeks of rest prior to the big day!7 -
Happy Memorial Day weekend to all. And to those in the military or have lost loved ones, thank you for your service and sacrifice.
Went to a BBQ last night and had white wine. Too much. Where did I just read, "alcohol wants more alcohol" ? I don't have a hangover but I did have the usual night sweats and pounding heart at 2 am right on cue. I will set the modest goal of finishing off this holiday weekend AF. @JulieAL1969 Im starting the AE challenge again. I didn't have the time to put into it last time and buzzed through half the lessons.
Did I mention our house is now under contract? The first couple to look at it put a contract on it. I feel quite relieved. Now to pack which is always fun lol.
Have a healthy day, Everyone! XO4 -

I'll be doing the Challenge with you. I feel ready to put in 100 percent effort to it. Yes, wine for me = heart racing and night sweats. That's the worst feeling. Sending you hugs!
Hope every has a nice, moderate day:)5 -
Did some "occasion" drinking (happy hour with husband). Had two glasses of Chardonnay. Woke up in middle of night and was awake for hours. Ugh. Headache this morning. I have become a pretty serious lightweight, drinkingwise.5

Continuing to be able to go out and just have 1, maybe 2, and go home and not continue the usual cycle. Proud of this little bit of progress so far. This has been a busy week so I've been out and about more. Today has been more about relaxing at home, cooking healthy meals, and drinking lots of water. Feeling better for sure.
Happy Memorial Day to all! And thanks to all past/current military members for their service.6 -
I'd love to commit to a dry June, I have all of my exams and I know that it is a big factor in my weight gain!!7
-
Tonight, I was tempted to go out with my friends to a sports bar to watch game 7 NBA.
I declined because:
1) I Would have been too tempted to have a few cocktails.
2) I would eat too many calories because I'd be drinking.
3) I want another great night of sleep without the fast beating heart and night sweats.
4) I wanted to Spend the evening with my daughter at home.
I'm happy with this decision. Hope everyone had a good day!8 -
@kittybenn That can happen! I think wine is way worse than just a soda and vodka. It affects me more. It keeps me up and I have a bad sleep. Hope tonight you catch up on a good night's rest.4

Sounds like you are making good progress and moderating well. Happy for you! Xo2 -
@Orphia Amazing run! You are well prepared for the race. And your heart isn't taxed extra by alcohol. It's all good!2

Seriously, I have the worst hangovers. I wonder what your secret is to not getting them.1 -
@WinoGelato Sounds like a beautiful weekend in nature!1

@JulieAL1969, it sounds like you make a mindful and good decision tonight. I myself am absenting myself from the TV room where my husband is cheering for his beloved Cleveland, and of course I'm hoping my beloved Houston has a chance. The 2 cities went 14 innings in baseball today. It's enough to drive me back to drinking, but I'm doing pretty well but still not going AF until June 1 (counting on the thread continuing!).
A story that struck me as funny for some reason. Maybe I just have a perverse sense of humor. I was the "money-taker" at a book signing last week. Wine and beer were on offer. A very adorable woman I know, who is a Southern Baptist non-drinker, ordered a "spritz." She defined this as Sprite and soda and said she loved having "spritzes" on her recent trip to Italy. She said, "They put Fanta in them! But I'll just have Sprite." You guys may remember I was in Italy in March, enjoying spritzes (oy vey!) every evening. Here's our conversation:
ME: Really? Fanta?? Did they say that was what was in the spritz?
HER: No, but it was orange. And it was so delicious!
ME: Um, I think the orange was from Aperol. Their famous spritz is based on Aperol.
HER: (looking confused). Hmm. (Walks away . . . comes back) Um, is there alcohol in that?
ME: Aperol? Yes, it's about 11%, kind of like wine.
HER: Hmm. Wow. So I was having something alcoholic with soda.
ME: Probably. Also, most of the bubbly part of a spritz is prosecco. Just a little bit is soda.
HER: Ah, is there alcohol in prosecco?
ME: Yeah. It's the Italian version of sparkling wine . . . like champagne from France.
HER: Wow! (Big smile). Those spritzes were GOOD!
I got such a kick out of that. Number one because obviously this precious woman had not overindulged. Probably one spritz per day at the most. Second, her innocent enjoyment of the beverage made me a little wistful. If only it could be as problem-free as all that. Sigh.

I have a really hard time breaking patterns so that seems like amazing progress to me. I would be proud too.
