@Elise4270 @sarahthes @katharmonic Thank you, all! It was brutal out there this morning. I’d like to think I’m fairly well acclimated to heat and humidity after living in the Deep South most of my life, but 90% humidity is just more than I can handle while running, clearly. My Fitbit logged my heart rate as “peak” (>158 bpm) for the entire race, and I wasn’t exactly setting the course on fire!1

I tested a little this morning. For my 5 minutes in zone 1 I allowed myself to go into the lower end of zone 2. Then in zone 2 I tried to stick to the higher end. A couple of times I went into zone 3 so I walked a few seconds. The cool down is still hard to keep hr down. I went slow, walked a few times, and just tried to go by feel, rather than staying at a certain hr. I looked at and figured out my HRR zones yesterday but didn't try those out.
I did make myself an appointment with an asthma and allergy specialist. I will be having my back all jacked up on the 29th and probably have to breathe into a tube a ton. They were like the appointment can take at least 2 hours. BUT I hope to be able to breathe better while running (an in general).3 -

That is TOTALLY me. I seriously hate the first two miles of almost every run, but once I get to around 2.5 it's like I can go forever.
Would the solid course of action be to run a few miles pre-race and then be super warmed up for the race? If I have my sluggish miles out of the way before the gun, then I suppose the idea is that I can just haul *kitten* for three miles? I mean, I won't win or anything, but I kind of want to know what my "5k race pace" is.
@fitoverfortymom That would be me, pretty much a turtle dragging a piano for the first 2-3 km then I get in that groove where it starts to flow. Still a turtle just that I am no longer dragging the piano. Last night was a perfect example, my first 2 km were 6:40/6:30 when I finished at 8 km my avg was 6:10/km so the other 6 km's were around 6:01-6:05. I will have to try the idea of doing a 2-3 km run before an event to get the junk km's out of the system before hitting gun time. Another reason I don't do 5 km's is if I have to travel for an hour to an event my Shoe Time should be bigger than my Drive time which means longer events.I wasn't bashing her plan or criticizing in anyway (I even included a smiley emoji after all). I was just curious because rarely does a training run (for us mere mortals) include mileage longer than about 20 miles (32k). Sorry if it came across that way. I think that was an AMAZING feet (yes, pun intended)
Of course we get fooled by @Orphia as she is on the other side of the dateline so she does a long run on her day off from work - Friday but it shows up as Thursday in my/our feeds.
Personally my longest run ( freedom run local challenge event ) is 37 km and in training rarely do I go past the HM distance. So inspired by this group whether someone is struggling through a 3 km or crushing an Ultra.
@polskagirl01 In the pictures they look like such tiny cute cuddly animals. But when they charge out of the bush/grass and catch you by surprise they always seem super dangerous. Probably had a nest near the area and was protecting her/his babies.
8km last night and 16 km this morning. I was 7 minutes faster than my previous run on this 16 km route so that's a pretty positive result even though my training has been negatively impacted by life/work. By the time I got to the 14 km mark I was starting to suffer early stages of dehydration, even though I have a case of water stashed in the trees at the 7 km mark and I sucked down a 500ml bottle. Just got really hot ( for us northern's ) Toughed it out but my pace definitely fell off at the end.
Sitting in the coffee shop BS with the crew and I got a cramp in the one calf - even though I had downed 1 liter of water-electrolyte recovery mixture. Just about kicked the table over getting my leg straight. It quickly passed and has been fine every since. I guess the water/electrolytes just weren't absorbed yet.

@katharmonic I believe you about the weasel! The hedgehogs here are cute, too I do on occasion stop in the middle of a run to watch wildlife.0

7.4mi/6.62 of which was the 10K. I didn’t get the time I wanted but I crossed the finish line. Lol.
They didn’t mention that we would be running on the trail instead of the paved road so I wore the wrong shoes. I started out pretty well, was at a 11min/mi by mile 1 and 10:30mi by mile 2 which is were I realized I was going much faster than I had planned but that wasn’t my mistake. As weird as is sounds, my mistake was choosing to run with people. Lol. Probably because I train alone I’m not able to hold a conversation and run without dying. I can however run and sing. Lol. By mile 4 I had dropped to a 12 minute pace and I was just hoping I could stay around there. Definitely ran the last mile too hard as I realized that was at 1 hour with half a mile to go and I wanted to finish in 1:05; which totally did not happen. Lol. Came in 7th for my age group. I definitely need to work on my speed. I was beyond impressed with all the runners. The #1 male finished the 5K in 15:02 and he was 20+years my senior. I was blown away at how fast he was. The #1 female for the 10K came in at 37:13....that is literally the time of my 1st 5K. So glad I’m not in her age group. Lol.
9 races under my belt and I only this year. You guys were right about this running thing. I’m glad to have a healthy new addiction. Lol.

@polskagirl01 - wow a European hamster! I was thinking a cavi but they are much bigger. Also I love hedgehogs.
@katharmonic - depending on where you live what you saw could have been a ferret.

Today was one of the wonderful run days. It was raining but the perfect temp (58) which is good because I didn't bring a running jacket with me. There was a bike race too this morning and many of the roads were closed and they had a great band playing! I really felt like I had gotten so lucky to be out there running in the rain. I also stopped frequently to take pictures. It wasn't the original route I planned to take but I just kept seeing things from the National Mall area and running to them I was soaked by the time I got back to the hotel but DH had left a Starbucks oatmeal for me in the room! #score!

Currently I know I’m pushing my luck, personally. My long run is about 50% of my weekly mileage, BUT, I know I am not running to win any time trophy, and am simply out for time on feet right now, plus cross-training. It’s too late in my marathon training to add much in the way of extra running days. This isn’t the way I want it to be but the best way I can manage it for me, now.
I know a lot of elites run fortnightly cycles. Is there merit in this? Certainly cut-back weeks every third week are seen in plans, and I’ve seen other plans where the long run is built at a steeper ratio (adding 3-4miles compared to the previous week) AS LONG AS that increase is repeated the following week without further miles added to the long run.
IMO, YMMV, I am not a doctor and all that.
YES do cut back weeks. Definitely.
You can not cram for a marathon though. Do what you can, but know that can not shortcut time on your feet week after week. Grab one of the popular and well-trusted training plans, and follow at least its pattern if not its mileage.
But again... YOU CAN NOT CRAM FOR A MARATHON (caps for emphasis).
Following a plan is exactly what I am doing. And it is working fine for me even though I’m doing less mileage than most would want for a marathon. I’m taking it easy and letting my body rest, whereas what I COULD be doing is trying to run every day to get the miles in. That I KNOW is just asking for trouble. My long run tomorrow should give me the final answer to the question of whether it’s an achievable goal or not.0 -

Fab run this morning - perfect running weather: crisp, clear and cool. I did about 6km solo before meeting with my running group for another 5km, then peeling off home by myself for another 2km. I had to be home by a certain time as DH was heading out but when I got there he was still mucking about so I sprinted (as fast as I could after 13km) around the block for a final kilometre as I was feeling so great. My time when I was by myself was pretty good, but the group run was really slow, which dragged my whole time down. No matter. I felt amazing the whole way.

I know most of the Garmin metrics are "best guess". But I've noticed a pattern in my stress score. It seems my stress score is higher when I sleep. During the day it's 25-45 at night I'm seeing 65. I wonder if that just confirming that I don't sleep well and hurt all night or if it's just junk metrics. It also seems to loosely follow days I exercise, but not always. I had also considered that it could be an indication of recovery. Any thoughts?

I don't have a Garmin, but I know that I'm able to deal with stress while I'm awake by being busy. At night, though, I think all the stress comes out to play--in hip pain, in frequent waking, in teeth grinding. Can you take something to help you sleep better, at least until you're a little more recovered?
Yes, I could take something. I try not to take meds, i have to be desperate for some relief to give in. NSAID's bother my gut, I might suck it up and have a Tylenol (paracetamol). I have prescription meds, but I might like taking them and come to rely on them for sleep.
I'm just waiting for it to all go away.1 -

I have been reading posts all week but haven’t posted since last Sunday. I ended up being on call for two weeks instead of one, plus hubby came home in the middle from 3 months overseas, so my running schedule has been all screwy. I missed a whole week of runs, and I haven’t been able to do a long run that was scheduled for two weeks ago. I’m going to do the long run tomorrow morning, and I have adjusted my remaining schedule to get back on track. I’m pretty certain I will not make my goal for the month. We’re going to visit family in NY at the end of the month, and while I plan to get in runs each day, I know that other stuff may come up and throw me off. I’m trying to not let it stress me out too much, but I really want to stay on track with the training and be able to complete my marathon.3 -

4.4km tonight. It looks like I will have to start doing afternoon and midmorning runs when possible, we had a big black bear in our yard the other night while we were out there BBQing and it's been sighted near where I run - Which is pretty much all around town (small town problems)

Today I ran my first Half Marathon. My goals going in were:
1. To complete the 13.1 miles. My longest training run was 12.5 miles so finishing would be a PR.
2. To finish in under 2:45
3. To run the entire 13.1 miles
4. Not be in last place. Lol
I accomplished all of my goals and got 2nd place in my age group! I squeaked in at 2:43:59. I felt really good about it. I probably started out a little fast, but not too bad. The weather was really nice starting out. It was getting a bit warm by the time I finished. But it was a really nice day for a run and the route was really pretty so it was fun to run. I started about in the middle and pretty much stayed there the whole time. I was following behind one lady and finally passed her around 7 miles. She ended up 3rd in the 50-59 female group. Around mile 11 I was passed by another lady who I never even knew was behind me. She ended up first in my group. She got far enough ahead of me that I never was able to catch her, but her overall time was only seconds faster than mine. I guess she really had the start slow finish fast thing down. At about 12.5 miles the finish was in sight. My husband was there and it was so good to see him and have him cheering me on. I was starting to drag a little, and while I knew I would finish seeing him really helped me keep going strong.
Overall I was very pleased with my first Half. The race was about 40 miles away, so it was an early morning. Then we got home and cooked out. I'm just now getting to this race report and I will have to go back and catch up on the thread. I know there were several others racing this weekend too.

@kgirlhart I’m bummed I didn’t get the time I had set out for, but it wasn’t realistic at the same time so im really just proud of myself for signing up and completing the race.
Awesome running and congrats on the AG placing. You and all the ladies older than me are my motivation to keep going.
@greyparks206 Nice job on the 5K. I’m sure the next one will feel like a breeze.

Normally on Saturdays I do a group run but I decided to go it on my own on a new route yesterday. One that was closer to home. There were not any sidewalks along most of it, but I knew that if I started early the traffic would not be heavy. I saw a gorgeous rainbow shortly after I started and got caught in a very short rain shower. Other than the humidity, it was a good 10-miler.
@greyparks206, @kgirlhart and @abutcher2122 – Congratulations to all of you on your racing this weekend! Thanks for sharing with us.

Well, I slogged through 3 miles this morning, but it was pretty hard going. I had planned to do this first "long run" yesterday, but I couldn't face another day on the treadmill so I decided to swap out my rest day from Sunday to Saturday since the weather looked more agreeable for this morning. It wasn't raining...but it still felt a lot like swimming! Very warm and humid. And then map my run kept doing weird stuff so I don't even know for sure that I ran 3 miles (although I ran for 45 minutes, so I'm guessing it's pretty close).
Anyway. I'm planning to run outside again tomorrow and hopefully it won't be quite so muggy.

Got in 4.6 miles this morning doing hill repeats. It was a struggle. I went later in the day so it was warmer than what I'm normally used to. On the plus side, the honeysuckle was in bloom and it smelled so good!2

I was signed up for a race on Saturday but I opted to switch to virtual and ran it today as my long run. I was having anxiety about it and debating the race or virtual option. I woke up on Wednesday and it was like I knew the virtual was best. I am sad I missed out on the actual race but having peace of mind is better for me. Part of my anxiety is this is the same route (although at last minute they reversed it) that I got so dizzy and puked on a few months ago. With the heat and being 6.55 miles I didn't want to be in the same situation again. I think the reversed route may have been better. I hope to run it again (fall or winter) if I figure out why I have these issues. I hope between the asthma/allergist and regular doc we can figure it out!
Tomorrows my rest day and my legs are looking forward to it. Since I had to shuffle days last week I've gone 9 days without rest. I'll probably do some stretching and ab work.5
