May 2018 Running Challenge

Planned an adventure this morning - took the train to another town with the intention to run back along the river. There’s plenty of pubs along the route to act as aid stations and toilet stops, and I had no restrictions on time.
Decided to work on a 6 minute run/45 second walk plan. Lately I’d been doing 20minute runs with 3-5minute walk breaks, but was finding that I was struggling to get back into the swing of running, so after reading some Galloway stuff I thought a shorter split was better. It would also hopefully slow me down a bit.
The route was lovely. Mostly gravel or rough tracks following the river. Some shade, but not nearly enough on what turned out to be a very hot day! I stopped at one pub for a coke and to refill my water bottle and sat on the grass a bit later for a cheese sandwich (trying to eat real food on my runs).
The worst bit came towards the end. There’s a diversion in place where the path has fallen in the river, but it’s not marked at one end, and my map only showed the original path. I found a way through where some kids (not really kids) were getting high and having a party, but once I’d started I had to continue - the route ISN’T a well used path - there were brambles and nettles a plenty, and my bare legs took the brunt of it. I very much regretted trying to follow the path - I could’ve cut an entire section of turmoil off if I’d just followed the road (and about a mile!!)
But it was a good run, mostly I suffered with the heat. I’d made a homemade rehydration/electrolyte mix which got annoying after a while. Legs ache, but that’ll pass in the morning and gives me an excuse to slump in front of Columbo....13 -
Race Report!
Well that was one of the hardest *kitten* things I've ever done and one of the most fun things I've ever done all at the same time.
The race did not start out well for me. At about the 2 km point I was having seriously sore ankle pain and into my shins. As I approached the aid station 8 seriously considered bagging it right then and there.
And then something clicked or maybe I was finally warmed up or something because the pain eased completely, I was running free and easy on the uphills and the downhills, it was awesome.
I discovered I am part goat.
My favourite was the flat bits through the field of wild rose bushes (not yet blooming).
Finish time was around 1:56 for 9.44km, which beat my goal of under 2 hours.
What a ride.

Today I ran my first Half Marathon. My goals going in were:
1. To complete the 13.1 miles. My longest training run was 12.5 miles so finishing would be a PR.
2. To finish in under 2:45

4. Not be in last place. Lol
I accomplished all of my goals and got 2nd place in my age group!

A friend was telling me of a bear sighting near my house around 6 am one morning this week. It was right where I run. It has me a little freaked out about running now!

@polskagirl01 From your description I was first thinking about a young badger, like 5BeautifulDays
. I never would have guessed it was a hamster! It looks so adorable in the pictures
I saw the first hedgehog of the year Wednesday night, also had to stop and watch the cute guy for a bit.
@shanaber Cool that you had such a wonderful run despite the rain!
@kgirlhart Congratulations, what an amazing race! Awesome that you reached all of your goals.
@sarahthes Those are a lot of hills. Cool pictures, great race!
@Teresa502 A bear sighting would freak me out too! Maybe you can run during different times of the day or with others for a while? Easier said than done sometimes, I know, but it would make you feel safer.
@5BeautifulDays @Teresa502 I hear you on the weather! It was really hot when I went running today. The time of the year has come to run at unholy times and avoid each ray of sunlight...
@girlinahat that's a really cool idea to take a train away and run back! Looks like a beautiful path.
2 -
Y'all have to understand, I've seen some of those hills (the exposed ones) and tracks from the freeway as we've driven past and I've looked at them and mentioned a few times that mountain bikers are crazy...
This race was apparently a qualifier for http://www.goldenultra.com/canadian-mountain-running-championships-2018.
I reread my race report and see I neglected to mention the bit where I slid back down the back end of that mountain goat trail on my butt because I didn't trust how loose the sand/hardened & crumbling mud on that part of the path was.
6 -
Congratulations @kgirlhart! Great job on your first half marathon and meeting and exceeding your goals!
@sarahthes you are hard core girl! Wow.
@girlinahat that really is a cool idea. Glad you made it safely through the section where the trail went away.
@Teresa502 yikes about the bear sightings. I have a hard time conceding to not running when an where I want but that might do it for me. Be safe!

Today started off rainy again so I slept in and lazed around. I absolutely did not want to run. It stopped raining and finally started clearing up so I dragged myself out thinking at least I could do 15 minutes. It ended up being not so bad and I did 30. It often turns out that way, huh. Although I found I had a sore spot/not quite a blister on the bottom of my foot that I didn't realize, probably from wet shoes yesterday so I had to baby that a bit.

I accomplished all of my goals and got 2nd place in my age group! I squeaked in at 2:43:59. I felt really good about it. I probably started out a little fast, but not too bad. The weather was really nice starting out. It was getting a bit warm by the time I finished. But it was a really nice day for a run and the route was really pretty so it was fun to run. I started about in the middle and pretty much stayed there the whole time. I was following behind one lady and finally passed her around 7 miles. She ended up 3rd in the 50-59 female group. Around mile 11 I was passed by another lady who I never even knew was behind me. She ended up first in my group. She got far enough ahead of me that I never was able to catch her, but her overall time was only seconds faster than mine. I guess she really had the start slow finish fast thing down. At about 12.5 miles the finish was in sight. My husband was there and it was so good to see him and have him cheering me on. I was starting to drag a little, and while I knew I would finish seeing him really helped me keep going strong.
Overall I was very pleased with my first Half. The race was about 40 miles away, so it was an early morning. Then we got home and cooked out. I'm just now getting to this race report and I will have to go back and catch up on the thread. I know there were several others racing this weekend too.
Upcoming races:
5/19/18: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon - 2nd AG
11/10/18: Wags & Whiskers 5K
@kgirlhart I'm home from the Vineyard and have been searching the thread specifically to find your race report. Congratulations on reaching all your goals and big congrats on the age group place.
I ran the Martha's Vineyard Half Marathon yesterday. We arrived on the Friday and the weather was awful. Squally rain, very gusty winds, and temperatures in the low 50s, with the same forecast for Saturday. Not ideal racing conditions. In fact I had to break a cardinal racing rule and go and buy a long-sleeved running top because I'd forgotten to put one in my bag.
But on the Saturday morning I was pleasantly surprised. Mid 50s, barely any wind and no rain. For the first few miles we were running on a bike path in a forest and it was lovely. My original plan was to stick with the 2:15 pacer and then ease ahead after about five miles. I got to mile five and realised I hadn't got enough long runs under my belt to accomplish this, so I decided to stick at that pace and just enjoy myself. After a few miles in the forest the race opens out onto the coast road and you get fabulous ocean views while you're running. Spotted some ospreys and egrets which was cool.
At mile 11 it started raining, but by that time it didn't matter. Had a lovely surprise towards the finish when I heard someone shout my name, and there was my husband cheering me on. His golf game had finished early and he got back just in time to watch me run past. He was also able to get to the finish tunnel to watch me cross the line.
So no PB, but still a great race. My legs felt fine. My new running top was a success. And my old Saucony's came through for me. I finished in 2:15:11 which got me 24th out of 84 in my age group, which I'm pretty pleased with. And I got a pretty sweet medal.

Great job @BruinsGal_91! Glad the weather wasn't as bad as it was predicted. Sounds like an awesome race and well done with your time after deciding your original plan was not going to work. You nailed that pace though! Love that medal. I'm definitely putting this race on my list for next year. Congrats!1

Oh I'd definitely recommend it as a 'runcation' race and making a weekend of it. I love the Vineyard.1 -
Congratulations @kgirlhart on your first HM and AG finish!
@sarahthes great job, and great pictures.
@girlinahat that was a great idea, and sounds fun.
Congrats to all the other runners that had races this weekend!!!0 -

Today's notes – I've been distracted by non-running online topics lately, so didn't check in yesterday. Not to worry, I ran a routine 8 mile group run yesterday.
Today was the Lilac Run 10K. There is also a 5K, scheduled an hour and fifteen minutes earlier so people can run both, but I only ran the 10K. This is also the USATF Niagara 10K Championship, part of the Rochester Runner of the Year series, and part of the USATF Niagara Runner of the Year series.
I've been feeling okay physically, but haven't been feeling much competitive fire lately. This was not helped by the knowledge that my club, the Genesee Valley Harriers, was the only club to declare any women's or masters men's team for the championship. Our open men's team had a couple competing clubs to beat, but my 60+ men's team only needed have 3 guys finish to win. Not a very high bar.
Yesterday I had done a volunteer shift at packet pickup, and glanced at the entry list. I predicted I would finish 3rd in my age group, behind a guy that I will never catch and behind my team captain. I also predicted I would age grad no better than 5th. Those are not great results for me in the RROY and USATF Niagara ROY scoring.
So I got up this morning, and it was raining. The forecast had 60% chance of rain for gun time. Oh, well. I ran in the rain yesterday, and prepared for it as best I could. As things turned out, it quit raining and I got to run at 61º F (16º C) with overcast skies and a light breeze. Decent weather for running in shorts and a singlet.
Lilac is an out, loop, and back with a downhill start and an uphill finish. I started out way fast, as planned; then moderated to something sustainable after about a half mile. By 2 miles in, most things were sorted out; I think about a half dozen young guys passed me after that. Also Joe, my co-pacer for the 8:00 group caught up to me and passed me; but I passed him on the uphill stretch in the last mile. And my team captain caught up to me and passed me about a half mile from the finish. Other than that, I ran a pretty uninspired race and only sent my HR up to 159; normal would be into the mid-160s near the finish. But at least my team captain dragged me to a faster finish than I would have managed on my own.
Final result was 42:21 gun time (42:17 net), for a 6:49 per mile average on what most runners consider a tough 10K course. That was good for 64th of 744 overall, 3rd of 22 in the M 60-64 age group behind the two guys I had expected to finish 1st and 2nd; and second scorer on the winning team, which would have meant more if Syracuse Track Club had shown up to compete with us.
I'm okay with that result. I think I was slow more because of my own poor motivation than because of weather, terrain, or my physical condition; but other than points for the 2 ROY series, there wasn't really anything riding on this race.
Bling for 3rd place was a string bag and a nice enough bronze medal. Bling for the team win was the smaller gold medal:

@BruinsGal_91 well done! Great that your husband could make it too!0

@Mobycarp a AG place is a place regardless. Well done!1

Well, last week didn’t go as planned. Was busy/lazy part of the week, and lightening part of the week. And I am nothing, if not a lightening chicken.
Today, I drove back to work travel location. Promptly got checked in and unloaded, and made myself run. I made it 4 miles, run 4min, walk 2 min intervals. Not that I have enjoyed any run lately, but today I did a first swipe at moving apartment stuff to storage, then drove 4 hours, then ran 4 miles. Let’s just say I didn’t feel like I was moving real well. But, it ended up being one of my faster paced runs as of late. Thus starts a new week.
4 miles = 17.5/307 -
Congratulations @sarahthes - that course looked brutal and I love that you slid down part of it! That would totally be me. Good news is it doesn't matter as long as you are moving forward!
Congratulations @BruinsGal_91! Your HM sounds wonderful!
@girlinahat - what an adventure! Sounds like a great idea up until the nettles!
Congratulations @MobyCarp on another great finish!2 -
Long run yesterday! I decided on a shorter route than planned because I had a lot of yard work lined up for the weekend, and I think that was a good plan. I'm going to play it by ear whether or not to take tomorrow as a rest day since I'm not sure the gardening today was as light as I'd meant it to be. I've been much more enthusiastic about running recently than I have been about lifting, which is kind of sad because lifting is awesome, but not sad because running is awesome too. I'm set to add a running day the week of the 25th and am kind of tempted to move that up a week. We'll see. It's just so beautiful out, I'm really happy I spent most of the weekend outdoors.

Loved all the race reports!!
I should update my log for May, but...
Today was my first long run in two weeks because of vacation. It was nine road miles and went very well. Had to do my long run today and glad I did because yesterday was a cold, rainy suck fest. It might make tomorrow's 3 miles at 4:30 am a little tougher, but its nice to be back in a routine.
Bought some more capris from JCPenney of all places. They have pockets, light compression, and a draw string. I've tried running in shorty shorts, but the loose skin I do have from weight loss is all in my thighs, so it's a little uncomfortable with anything less than knee length. I've been eyeballing a pair of knee-length shorts on Eddie Bauer for $60, but I will probably get those when I shift my focus back to trails later in June.4 -
Feeling great this week, so I snuck in a speedy 5k today.

@kgirlhart Congrats on a great race!
@sarahthes Don't you love it when the inner goat comes out to play?
@girlinahat Looks like a great place to run, great work.
@Teresa502 A bear bell maybe? They had us all bring one when we were running in bear areas in Japan, it did annoy the kitten out of me though...
@MobyCarp Like they said, and AG placing is an AG placing, hope your competitive spirit fires up again soon.
@BruinsGal_91 That sounds like a really nice race course, congrats!
5.20-10k, total-38.7k, May goal 60k
Really nice weather for running yesterday. Cool, slightly windy, raining just a tiny bit. Probably won't be getting this kind of weather again until September at least...
Upcoming races:
20181027 Mogan Ultra 30k2 -
Congratulations to everyone who raced over the weekend! I won't start tagging all of you, because I'm sure I'll miss someone, but I enjoyed reading your reports!
I biked yesterday, and ran 7.3k today. No weird animals to report
My goals are starting to shift (as planned). I'm slowly transitioning from "recover well" into "get bike fitness back" and "maintain a good balance in running". Specifically, I want to comfortably commute by bike to one of my jobs (14k each way, not arriving all sweaty and gross) and run a half marathon anytime I want. The running is a matter of recovery & then maintenance, but the bike may take a few more weeks.
Upcoming races:
6/2 Solidarność Half Marathon
6/30 Silesian Highland [trail] Half Marathon
7/16 CityTrail OnTour 5k4 -
@BruinsGal_91 and @MobyCarp great races.
6 miles for me this am. Fartlek workout 12 1min runs at 5-10k pace and 1 min recovery. I was trying to make sure I wasn't too slow on my intervals but i may have been too fast. A few were below 7 minutes/mile but I was able to get in all 12.

Nothing remarkable about this morining's 10K run. Started off a little slow, but ended up with pretty significant negative splits; starting with a 9:03/mi and ending with a 7:04/mi. HR averaged only 126. But this run actually felt better (more comfortable) than Saturday's long easy run at 9:29/mi. After about 6 years of running, I still haven't really figured out how run.
Great race @BruinsGal_91. Terrific pacing, and a mighty fine looking medal!
@MobyCarp you still continue to amaze me. That was a fantastic 10K time! I know you weren't overjoyed with your time (you are way too hard on yourself), but anyone half your age would kill for a 42:17 10K. I want to be you when I grow up.3 -
I am terrible at keeping up on this thread!
Miles Friday... shake out Saturday... 10k trail race on Sunday which was a MUDFEST! But fun. Plus cider and beer at the end + waffles and ice cream. I came in 2nd in my age group, and my friend won the AG. She was second female overall but got beat by over 1 min/mile by a 13 year old girl!
