Good Luck @kristinegift. I admire your dedication. I know my family wouldn't support me running a mile at every stop. Consider yourself blessed.
Beautiful pictures @ROBOTFOOD. Tushars looks like a very nice place for a HM in August. And that is a huge mileage goal for this month. I'm sure you're up for it, but that sounds crazy to us mortals. Good luck.1 -
Good to see you stop in @ROBOTFOOD ! Lovely pics and blazing PR's!1

girlinahat wrote: »that's one LONG drive @kristinegift !!!
when planning that sort of drive how do you work your stops? Last year I drove up to the island of Mull, which was a mere 330 miles, and I planned stops every 100 miles. I gave myself about 20 minutes at each stop, and made sure I walked about (hard to plan runs round gas stations here). Later I realised that I should have done stops based on time rather than miles.
On the way back, as I'd barely slept and was concerned about some weaving I did early on in the drive back, I made myself stop every 1 and a half hours, push my seat back, and sleep for 20 minutes. That got me and every one else on the roads home alive.
I usually look for state parks or green spaces on the map and plan my stops based on that because that usually guarantees a good space to run. I love making running pit stops on long drives!1 -
Good luck on your long drive @kristinegift. What part of Iowa? I feel like it's kind of a hard drive if you are taking I-80 much of the way to see places you might be able to run. Probably need to plan ahead to get off the interstate for some parks or something? Cleveland and Chicago would have fun places to run but take some chunks of time and diversion from your route. I'll be curious to hear how you make out! I am headed to the Iowa City area in a few weeks - but flying. I swore to never do that drive again a few years ago.0

@kristinegift @katharmonic I live in SW Iowa and am a former DSM resident. I couldn't tell you much about places to run in eastern Iowa, but can offer some suggestions in central or southwest Iowa, depending on if you are looking for dirt trails or if you prefer paved. If you are anywhere in central Iowa, there is an ever-expanding network of trails (mostly paved). Here in SW Iowa, there are a couple of good trails... the best is the Wabash Trace (mostly wood-chip). Council Bluffs has trails that hook into the Omaha trail system via the Kerry Pedestrian Bridge. And if you really want to stay close to I-80, stop off at exit 63 (north of Atlantic) and there is a trailhead maybe 1/8 mile from the interstate. That is a mostly paved trail. These are all mostly multi-use (bikes, runners, walkers).
Anyway, if you are going to be in any of the 1/4 to 1/2 of Iowa that I'm most familiar with, let me know if you want any ideas for locations.1 -

I got out for a nice 3.2 miles this morning. It was a little humid but overall a nice day for a run. It was my first run since the HM so I decided that I wasn't going to pay attention to my pace or distance. I was just going to run for 30 - 40 minutes depending on how I felt. The first half mile felt a little stiff, but once I got going I felt really good. I played Zombies Run and just had a fun run. Then I came home and did some yoga.

Woo! Met my minimum of 50 miles! With 8 days of running left in the month and a long run of 8 miles I may hit the high end of 75! I had a fast finish run this morning and I think those are my favorite. I settled into a decent zone 2 for the most and then got to step it up for the last 12 minutes. Much easier to pick it up rather than try to get back to zone 1. Lol4 -
Since we’ve gone from serous drought to monsoon season in the last week, I gave in and joined my local Planet Fitness to have access to a treadmill. I figure this will also give me a chance to work on regulating my pace; I’m terrible at that when I run outdoors. I was a little tentative today, not used to running on a treadmill and still a little sore from the weekend, so I just did a slow 3.25 miles, including my warm up and cool down, in about 48 minutes.
Side note. Does anyone else get REALLY dizzy when coming off of treadmills? I get terrible motion sickness; maybe it’s a similar phenomenon. I have to bring my pace down little by little over the last half mile or so and then gingerly step into the ground, taking tiny steps for a few minutes until I get my equilibrium back. Not enough to make me sick, but I don’t care for that feeling at all!
May goal: 40.0 miles
Today: 3.25 miles
Total so far: 21.75 miles3 -
@greyparks206 It's not just you. Been a while since I ran on the dreadmill but I wobble about like I've been drinking once I'm done.1

Today's notes – It was raining this morning, but I went out to run anyway because I'm committed to a volunteer gig at the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge this evening. Turned out to be 58º F (14º C) with minimal wind, so it was quite pleasant. Kind of ran the route ad hoc, looking to get 8 miles in; and it came in at an average pace of 7:58 per mile. I guess it's a little harder to run in the rain than in clear weather, because I never had to make myself slow down today.
re: Comments about my not being happy with my time in the race on Sunday; I'm okay with the time, I'm not terribly happy with my mindset and attitude. But it is what it is, and I may have simply committed to too many races. I'll get through them. Saturday's 5K is not as high profile; I'd like to win my age group, but if no one good shows up I don't really need to run a sub-20 minute 5K.

That is normal - it varies in degree for different people, but if you go straight form hard exercise to dead stop, it can cause those symptoms, some people even faint. IME different people have different levels of issues with this but it is not unheard of. Cooling down before you get off is the best counter.1 -
@Scott6255 Tushars (UT) is incredible. It’s difficult to race there because you constantly have to take pics haha.
So Next month if I can nail the +5/wk, would have me going 310mi. (70, 75, 80, 85). We’ll see. Haven’t gone over 75 since 2011. But things sure are clicking last several months. Many double runs in my future haha.
@Elise4270 Thanks!! I definitely need to post here more regularly. I do see a lot of you guys posts on Strava though too
Happy Trail Tuesday everyone! I’ll be running later today!3 -
@greyparks206 Yes to the side note! In the very rare event that I run on a treadmill, I slow down and stand there for a few seconds before I step off.
Met my nominal goal for the month early - which means recovery is going well and I'm feeling good.
I biked to and from a work meeting this morning (half my usual distance to work that I'm building up to, so I figured it was do-able), then got in 5k running after my son on his bike on the way home from his swim lessons. There were trails, roads, hills, intervals because kids on bikes don't do well on trail hills, some mallard ducks next to a puddle, he remembered his helmet and got to try some of the ramps in the woods, and we found the old motor cross course (at least that's how it's labeled on the map - it looks more like a crop circle from google maps, but in person is much less impressive - basically an overgrown field with circular paths that get smaller and smaller with a post in the center). We took a selfie and moved on. I'm tired and my legs kinda hurt from the bike rides. A rest day might work out well for tomorrow.5 -
I am so far behind...22 pages now. I think I'm going to cut my losses and start on page 55. I feel bad missing all those posts though.
@kristinegift way to kill it!
@kgirlhart congrats on a fantastic race! Very cool!
@polskagirl01 sorry you got bit. I imagine that was quite a bit of panic at the time!
@greyparks206 that does sound like a sultry time to run. The fact that you're using the race as motivation in your training is a great sign. nice job!
@shanaber nice pics! vacation running is awesome.
@girlinahat I'm trying to talk my wife in to taking a narrowboat trip down those canals!
@sarahthes fantastic race! It sounds like you really caught a nice flow on those trails!
@BruinsGal_91 nicely done!
@MobyCarp your pace never ceases to amaze me. It gives me hope as I get older.
@ROBOTFOOD great to see you back!
Road trip running - I love a good road trip! I try to plan ahead where to stop by using the Strava heat map. It's pretty easy to see what looks like a trail route, which is what I try to find. I'll also look for nearby state parks.

My 50K trail race last Saturday, the Superior Spring 50K was OUTSTANDING! Everything I'd hoped for. I'll type up a full report soon...I've already made notes of things I want to mention...but I'll post this now.
The weather was awesome. Mid 40's and cloudy.
The scenery was spectacular. It was so hard keep my eyes on the trail, which I need to do because...
The trail was by far the most technical I've run. Compared to the Superior Hiking Trail (SHT), not even Zumbro would qualify as technical. Much of the northeast part of the state where the race is held is on shallow granite bedrock so the tree roots can't go very deep. Consequently, they spread out close, or on, the surface and the trail was littered with these roots. Then there's the rocks we had to dance around. small rocks, big rocks, boulders. Even when my foot landed right quite often my ankle would scrape up against a rock and get me to cussing. And of course, we had mud. Not Psycho Wyco mud, not Zumbro mud, but enough mud to make it interesting.
I had a great time. I felt strong, I ran strong, but in the end, my limited training build-up caught up to me and muscle fatigue and cramps kept my last 25% of the race from being as strong as the first 75%.
I ended up with a time of 6:51, which was under my 7 hour goal, but slower than my 6:30 stretch goal. Both goal numbers were just educated guess though. I didn't get my goal of being at least at the 50th percentile, but I did make the top 10 (out of 28) in the geezer division (Grand Master Male).
Perhaps best of all..NO IT BAND PAIN!!!! I'm now convinced that issue is completely behind me. I'm so happy about that I sent and email to my PT thanking her profusely for her help.
But like I say, I'll get a proper report typed up and tell you about getting rained on while I slept, barely making it to the race start on time, ramps, drinking beer and Fireball at the turn around, disco balls, the MNLittleFinn sighting, getting hugged by a strange man, and being so relieved I jammed my pinky into a rock.
The turn-around. That's Lake Superior in the distance.
The finish - the race start and finish were at a ski resort, and finish chute went around the pool.
The bling and celebratory toast!

@7lenny7 Awesome! Sounds like a hell of a good race.
(I personally learned what technical really means this weekend and damn it was fun but I was so unprepared. But I don't want to hijack your race report haha...)
1 -
@7lenny7 You shaved your winter beard! I wouldn't have recognized you! Sounds like a great race. Looking forward to the details.1
-
@7lenny7 WE NEED THE 'AWESOME' BUTTON. 'Like' just doesn't cut it. Amazing and I can't wait to read the full report.2

Reluctantly ran in the rain this morning because the after-work forecast looked worse. It was a good decision because rain ended up being really light during my run and it just poured after I got home from work. I was glad I sucked it up and didn't take a rest day.
In other good news, my group got officially into the Falmouth Road Race (7 miles) on Cape Cod on August 19th. So excited for this trip - I've never been to the cape and it sounds like a really fun race with elite runners as well as casual run for fun folks. We rented a house and have plans to order t-shirts for our team theme - we are the Pink Cheetahs
So I add that officially to my upcoming races:
4/22/18 Owens Corning Half Marathon, Toledo OH
5/12/18 Right to Run 19K, Seneca Falls, NY
6/3/18 Niagara Falls Women's Half Marathon
6/5/18 JP Morgan Corporate Challenge (3.5 mile), Syracuse NY
7/8/18 Boilermaker 15K, Utica NY
8/19/18 Falmouth Road Race (7 miles), Falmouth, MA
8/26/18 18.12 Challenge, Sackets Harbor, NY??? (not yet signed up)
10/28/18 Marine Corps Marathon, Arlington VA
I really need to figure out if I can do a HM in September, maybe instead of the 18.12 Challenge or in addition to it. The 18.12 is, as implied, a little over 18 miles so it would be a good practice for me to have a longer distance. But not sure if I should have a "prep" race a little closer to marathon time?

Went out to a local park I haven't been to for awhile... and remembered why I haven't been there for so long. It is not a big park, but a lot of hills and trees. There are no trail maps, and the trails split off constantly to lots and lots of short trails. It's easy to get turned around and easy to forget which way you came from or turned at the last 8 intersections. Also, with low BG, it is easy to get confused. I happened to come out again near my car after 2.33 miles and decided to call it quits.
Also, pace was really slow because there was a lot of walking too. And that brings me to 2 other things:
1. I'm obviously not going to make my goal for May - not even close.
2. My speed has been really terribly slow and it is killing me. I would like to think that it is because of my extra weight. Indeed, the 30s-1 min. per mile for every 10 extra lbs. proves out. Despite that it is really bothering me, I really want to focus on increasing distance more than improving speed. In truth, I want to improve both.
