Kylia - congrats on the win and great photos of you and your DH and the grands! Sounds like your plans to let the kids do their thing for Christmas is a winner.
CJ - ((((HUGS ))))
Pip - is this a new boss giving you problems or just the regular one being persnickety? I think you said it's kind of different management now with different expectations.
Heather - thinking of you and your hot weather... ours is coming up. I just checked your weather report - UGH, lol. And am so grateful we get the cool nights in the 50's. Looks like your new place near the ocean will have more moderate temps.
Carol - how neat for your granddaughter! Can't wait to hear more details!
Barbara AHMOD - sorry that Tumble is off the feed. My older one does that sometimes too, but generally is starving the next day. Their new favorite treat is carrots! So I cut them up in chunks and keep them in my pocket. They seem to prefer that over anything else. Old Sophie gets her teeth cleaned this Thursday so her crunching might be limited for a few days after that.
Don't know what my doc will have lined up ref blood glucose tests. I've been keeping track and can get FBS under 100 AFTER fasting 14 hours and getting 3000 steps in. Maybe she'll say that's OK! In any case, I am going to try severely limiting carbs after lunch and see if that helps. I actually dug through and read notes I took at the doc's three years ago, I must have had concerns then because she said get a walk in after supper. So will try that as well providing I don't melt in the coming heatwave this week.
FYI gals, I did an experiment yesterday. Decided to do three 30 second stints of jogging in place, a minute between each stint. Guess how many steps my Fitbit registered? Over 300. Not sure if that's the same quality as doing striding type walking. But it's certainly a good way to raise cardio a touch. Maybe can do that instead of that hot walk in the late afternoon sun.
Rebecca - your minimalist drive reminds me of a good friend of mine where one thing was enough - spatula, skillet, etc. almost like Maria Kondo's ideas. Me - on the smaller things, I like to keep a spare, especially if they are things I feel will be hard to find or a lot more expensive later. I have Dexter 3 1/2" scalloped/serrated paring knives that I just love and use all the time. Have 2 in use right now and 2 more in the packaging in the drawer. LOVE the jokes and kitty faces!
KarenNY - My heart leaped at the photo of your daughter off to an adventure. First thing I thought of was it's winter there, lol. What a great opportunity, that's for sure. My DH spent a lot of time in SE Asia during the Vietnam War, and said it's such an eye opener to see how folks live in other parts of the world.
Waiting to hear the postal carrier drop my books on the front step this morning, anxious to see what the 8 week blood sugar by Mosley recommends. AND with our warm afternoon, I see a couple dogs overdue for their bath. We'll have a wet afternoon.
Enjoy your Sunday!

I saw an interview and have read a lot that 30 minutes of activity is all that’s needed and it doesn’t matter if that is all at once or not. Not sure how accurate it is, but it seems to be agreed upon be several.2 -
Rebecca and Wendy, yes, math makes about that much sense to me to! Anything beyond the basics and my eyes start to glaze over! lol
Kim, the wedding cake is quite lovely. And sounds like the price was just right!
Well, trying to start over, again. My weight loss seems to go in fits and starts, and is most definitely 2 lbs down, 1 up, 2 down, 3 up..... rinse and repeat..... I am really trying to get a handle on my after dinner munchies. They do seem to strike if I am downstairs watching tv, kitchen is just far too close, apparently, and the snacks call me... I am trying to limit the amount of snacks that I like to eat, that does help. If I just have stuff that hubby likes, then I'm not so bad off. Work in progress, for sure!
Older son, daughter in law and grandson were over for dinner on Monday (our official holiday was Sunday but if you are a Mon-Fri worker, you got Mon off. I got Sunday off, but Monday isn't a day that I would normally work.) Our grandson wanted to go upstairs so I went with him and nobody followed me! For those of you who are new or don't remember, my DIL would always nod her head to my son to go after us, very annoying, I have no idea what she thought I would let happen to the little guy, but we had a bit of a blow out a while back and I tried to talk to them, but had a hard time as the dog and the grandson were demanding attention. Anyway, I ended up sending our son an e-mail (sorry Lisa) and laid it all out and things seem to be changing for the better. It was so nice to be able to spend some time with him all to myself! Not that we were up there for long, but just having them trust me enough to be there for 5 or 10 min. Hubby and I did raise two kids, managed not to kill either one of them, so I think I should be okay for a few minutes with Nicholas. He never seems to eat much dinner when he's at our place, he's a healthy, happy kid so I know he does eat, just not too much at our place. Oh well. He did fill up on some fresh berries that I had for dessert tho! He came and sat on Gramma's knee and had about 6 helpings (of about 2 tsp each)! Maybe next time they're over I'll suggest he sit on my knee for dinner, maybe he'll eat more. I also made cream puffs for us big kids! My mom used to make them all the time, I thought they were hard to make, had only tried them once in high school cooking class. Massive failure. Anyway, I was at my mom's place one time when she was making them and that's when I realized they're really quite easy. I still don't make them often, but they are a nice treat.
Quiet day at work today. Annoying when we've been almost crazy busy all week. Sunday is usually slower, but today is a bit ridiculous.... only 2.75 hours to go.... Oh well, I've done some cleaning, so that will make the boss happy. Not that she's a tyrant, but I know she does appreciate it when someone else does some cleaning (other than her!)
Okay, this went on much longer than I had anticipated! Welcome to the newbies, hugs for those needing them and congrats to those celebrating!
Evelyn, Vancouver Island
It’s nice to see that you are making strides with your son and DIL!0 -
Hi ladies! Just checking in as internet has been flaky since we got to this spot. DH still hasn’t passed the stone. I’m not worried about that as much as the other.
Can’t stay on long.
Talk later.

the company is growing so it's not a mom and pop store anymore so they are amping up their policies and procedures and how things are said, done, and the actions we take and how we talk and how we wipe our *kitten* and how many sheets of toilet paper we are using when we do wipe6 -
Did Firm Slim Solutions Yoga DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do some hula hoop, hold my plank, then take the extremepump class.
M – the time I used the free pick up, the minimum order was $50. It took me weeks and weeks to come up with $50. Well, I do admit that during that time there were things that I had to run to the store for that were less than $50. Using a taxi would definitely cost more than the price of the delivery, so you made a good decision. I was shocked when I called because the first time I received some items that I didn’t want. Evidently, there is a place where you are to mark if substitutions are OK or not. Well, I didn’t know about this button and I was told that if they didn’t have something, I wouldn’t get anything. Well, instead they substituted. I called the company and explained the situation, telling them that I’d return the items to the store. They told me to keep the items but that they’d credit me, they want people happy. It was my own fault! But they also said (and this I can understand) that once an item leaves the store, they can’t put it back on the shelve. So I guess the thought is that since they can’t make a profit, why not make some good will? And this was WalMart!
CJ – welcome back! We’re here for you to share the good, the bad, and the ugly. I’m so sorry to hear about your husband and your granddaughter.
Jess has her “white coat ceremony” in early Sept (that’s where she gets her lab coat). We just made our reservations to go to St. Kitt in late August returning early September. I’ll probably wish I could stay longer….lol
Vince put grout on these tiles and I helped him clean the tiles, then went in the pool. We seem to have a hornet’s nest near the pool so I’ve been killing them a lot. In for dinner, Vince is working on lights around the pool area.
Alice – welcome back!
Kim – love how you decorated the cake. I would have thought it would be larger, tho. Good for you that it wasn’t. You must make your own icing. What is your recipe?
I’m not a big math person, either. The other day Vince was making the holder for the clock that’s out by the pool and he came in saying “I have to find the hypotenuse of a triangle”. I remember finding the hypotenuse when I was in high school and then when I was subbing in the high school, but even then we didn’t use it a whole lot. All I recall is a2 + b2 = c2….I think
Going to go out and see the lights that Vince is putting up.

michele - just a box cake mix in 2 8 inch pans; if it had been for me I would have done 3-4 layers so it was taller and easier for guests to see; Only needed to feed 2!
I use the Betty Crocker Buttercream recipe, cheaper than store, you can control consistency, and if you use real butter it sets up a bit not crunchy or hard but just a bit of a dry outside which means every little bump is not a disaster, I'm a homemade (non-box) person when ever possible. In this case the mom cooked the cake and she needed to use a box (this is the same gal who wanted brown food coloring to make browned butter).

Michelle, my husband came in the other day and was telling me about his day, trying to mark 120 acres into perfect squares and lines for planting with manuka for the bees to make honey. The maths and procedure was so complicated I said, "Honey, why don't you tell me this later when we're in bed, because it will put me straight to sleep!" LOL. God gave me an extra dose of compassion but he had to make room for it by removing the logical math gene. I don't miss it. I am happy living in a world of close enough, Wendy5

Then they called me fat, mean and I broke my promise I would swim. Damn! I went swimming at the YMCA with them all month. I’ll be so glad to be in the car heading down to Florida to let Jess take over.
Wow. I am not a grandparent, but any kid who spoke that way to anyone would not be happy with their time out/no more swimming result!3 -

Dear All,
I am back. I was so glad to see posts from people I recognize. I wish that I had never gotten out of the habit of participating every day. I would be in a much better place. This time for good. I decided to just read the latest in this thread rather than trying to catch up on the many months I was away. I was reluctant to share as there was nothing good in my life. It seemed like I would be a big burden on everyone else. My husband died. My little granddaughter's cancer returned with a vengeance after only a brief respite. The next generation, has been alternatively in and out of hospital and disappearing for months on end. In all, a grand mess. So I will read what you fine ladies write every day and draw sustenance from that.
CJ
This is precisely why you should be here, daily. This is a wonderfully supportive group and I've read some lovely uplifting things. Don't worry about being a burden. Here, that is impossible.3 -

I have my mother to thank for the once a week (or sometimes once every other week) grocery shopping trips.
She was a very well-organised woman ... working as a nurse, raising kids, active in cycling and walking, plus taking on various volunteer roles with the church and clubs etc. us kids were involved in.
So when it came to household tasks, she devoted certain days to them. Wednesdays were vacuuming and dusting days. Thursdays were grocery shopping days. Two days each week were laundry days. And so on.
To accomplish the grocery shopping once a week, she had (actually still has) a chalkboard where she (mainly), but also other members of the family, wrote/write grocery requests. For example, if we used the last of a cereal, we'd write it on the board ... if she hadn't already done it.
She was also meticulous about meal planning. She had a 2-week calendar of meals, so she knew exactly what she needed each week to make those meals. I don't think she does this quite so meticulously anymore, and I certainly don't do this, but it did help keep the grocery shopping efficient.
While I don't mind the actually grocery shopping (I like looking at the options) ... I don't like the waiting in line to pay, hauling the stuff home and unpacking. So keeping the grocery store ventures to a minimum works for me.
I will still visit the grocery store, and possibly also the fresh fruit and veg market, close to where I work once a week to pick up work lunches and snacks, and fresh fruit and veg, but meanwhile, I've started making a list for my next online order already ... like my mother did, but mine's online.
And yes, they have checkbox to tick or untick about whether I want substitutions. I chose not to get substitutions this last time, but I may chose it another time ... if they substitute, they will substitute with an item of equal or greater value, for the same price as the item I chose, which isn't a bad deal.

On another topic ...
When I read books like the Agatha Christie or Phryne Fisher mysteries and others, it would seem that back in the old days, all sorts of people had personal assistants. For example, Phryne has Dot.
That's what I need ... a Dot.
Unfortunately, such services all seem so expensive now ... more per hour than I'm making. Maybe I'm in the wrong business.

I know that on the one hand it is hard to let go (this from the perspective of someone who lives on the other side of the world from her family), but on the other hand, I'm glad to hear she's doing this. I think all young people, if at all possible, should spend an extended time (at least a few months) in another country or countries.
Until you're 30, you can get working holiday visas in many countries quite easily. After 30, however, it becomes much more difficult to spend more than a short holiday somewhere.
And these days, with the global economy, it is a very good idea to have experience in how other countries do things - business practices, customs, etc.. That's a valuable skill for future employment.

Heather: I hope you have a good visit with your cancer friend. She is lucky to have a friend like you who keeps in touch and visits her. I do agree that vitamin supplementation is an area where people can spend a lot of money on expensive urine, and can occasionally take too much of something that could lead to negative consequences. I have been taking 3,000IU of Vitamin D3 daily for many years with no noticeable problems. I live north of the 45th meridian in a region that is often cloudy and has dark winters. I suffered from Seasonal Affective Disorder for many years. D3 has worked miracles for me. My blood work with the doctor has never been worrisome.
(((CJ))): I am glad you are back but I am sorry for your losses. Losing your husband and having a dear a granddaughter fighting cancer is a heavy burden to bear. Sending good thoughts your way. heart:
Allie: I love hearing about your happy life. WTG! You've worked hard for it and deserve every happiness that comes your way. :flowerforyou:
NYKaren: Your daughter is gorgeous. I hope she has wonderful experiences in South Africa.
Rebecca: I love the math word problem. I love the Stones quote, too.
Lanette: I take 5,000 IU of Vitamin D3 daily. My blood work also shows no problems with it. Everyone is different. I've heard it called the sunshine vitamin & in our region we need all the sunshine we can get.
Barbie: I haven't deactivated my facebook account, but I rarely visit there. Now that you've put the idea into my mind, I'll be thinking about deactivation. I seldom go there because I seldom see anything but junk and advertising. The only good things I see are pictures of my grandchildren, and that is why I haven't already made the change. :grumble:
Rita: Sending good thoughts for your DH. Sorry the internet has been flaky. :flowerforyou:
Pip: Sorry about the changes at work. :ohwell: I hope things eventually find a better balance.
Machka: The lyrics below are the ones my mom taught me. I hope you enjoy them.

Hi all,
Just about to get up and start my day. Catching the 8.36 to London.
I really want to see my friend so I will just have to put up with the heat. I will take a bottle of water with me for the underground.

Lanette and Heather: I gave two numbers for Vitamin D3 without realizing it. I take 5,000 IU daily. My doctor is happy and my blood work is fine. This is liquid in a capsule. I realize that everyone is different. I have a summer birthday and have been told that those of us with summer birthdays have more trouble with winter depression. It was true for me until I started taking the D3. Depression caused by short days and lowlight levels hasn't come knocking on my door in a few years.

That was pretty much it!
On the up-side ... we all remained slender growing up, and I don't need much variety in my meals.
On the down-side ... if I ever touch steak again, it will be too soon. Steak was our Sunday meal and I loathe steak. Just about the minute I turned 18, I never had another steak again. And in fact, I don't eat much in the way of meat in general.

I must take every opportunity to see her.

Katla - She is the kind of person who has many close friends. Lots of us are in support of her. We take it in turns. She lives alone but with her adult children close by and one grandson.
If anyone wants to read her really good memoir, it is Loose Connections, by Maleika Rose Stanley. She is mixed race and fostered. A good read.5 -
Hi All, I started a walking plan July first and saw this thread a few days ago. So I'm happy to be reading all these posts about women 50+ keeping healthy. I'm soon to be turning 69 and so far since July 1 been walking between 12,000 and 17,000 steps daily. I would like to reach 20,000 by the end of the month comfortably.5

machka My DH and I were thinking along the same lines when we encouraged Rachel to school abroad, we want her to open her mind to a broader view and experience. And yes, she looks really young (like I was thinking 8!) but is turning 20 in August. We’re booking a trip around that time to visit her and do a bit of the traveling ourselves.
One of the reasons I turned to MFP was to get fit and healthy so I would feel strong enough to travel with DH who is a great wanderer! My work has tied us down but he is ready to roam-so I knew I had to get healthier to climb and walk and deal with the long flights and build up some coping skills for my anxiety. You ladies are part of the coping
Off to exercise then making some hummus to bring to a summer lunch get together, young colleague is bringing her 1 yo so that will be fun! Then back home to start a long list of chores

Hoo boy! Monday morning and I am DRAGGING! I was up until 10:30 last night (late for me). After Trentin (my weekend daycare kiddo) got picked up at 5, I got chicken and veggies grilled for dinner, dinner eaten and cleaned up and began painting. About 30 minutes into painting, my inlaws called. They were in town, at the beach, and wanted to stop by before they headed back home. (*sigh) I picked up my paint supplies, made room in the kitchen for seating (due to stairs, they have a hard time getting into other areas of the house), cleaned myself up and visited with them for about 45 minutes. lol After they left, I continued with the painting. I have five more days of this. 5:30am wake up, kids arriving at 6:30am, kids leaving at 5:30pm, dinner, painting. Wednesday evening I will have Trentin from 4pm until 7:30pm, but I am hoping to have everything painted and only the cupboard doors to be re hung. I can do this. Day five, DD and Joaquin will be landing at the airport at midnight and arriving at our house probably about 1am. I am SO excited about that, I am positive it is only adrenaline that is keeping me going.
Kylia- That is a gorgeous Mustang! Congrats on the tropy!
NY Karen- What a fantastic photo of your daughter! Her excitement seems to exude from the photo. Kind of bittersweet watching them achieve what they desire; but knowing that it is taking them far away for a while! Hugs to you!
Kim-You did a beautiful job with the cake.
Ooops- more of you I wanted to reply to, but it will have to wait. Everyone is here and ready to begin the day! ttfn xoxoxo

Katla, I got a Facebook account a few years ago because my friend in California would suggest that I ask Jake to show me to pictures of her dogs that she had posted on Facebook. It made me feel like a child asking my dad for help so I got my own account. As with all Facebook, it snowballed into too many political statements and sad requests to find homes for abandoned animals. Before I closed my account, I e mailed my friend who posted the dog pictures and told her that I wouldn't be on Facebook and would appreciate her texting me an occasional cute picture of her dogs. She has done that.
Gamliela, welcome. I hope you will keep coming back. Walking is one of my favorite things to do. I have a pedometer and a walking app on my phone and I love keeping track of my steps.
Jake has a doctor's appointment this morning to find out about some odd blood test results. He is nervous. I'm glad I got up early so I can have a really long walk and still get home early enough to be ready to go to the doctor with him.

I had to look up the Betty Crocker buttercream recipe. I never thought about there being a recipe. I just toss butter and powdered sugar together with vanilla and milk until it’s the consistency I want. If I want chocolate, I add cocoa. It’s funny the things we learn to make from watching parents, grandparents, or someone else that we never consider there is a recipe for.
