But thanks, I really do appreciate it!
@Scott6255 you're welcome. My next recommendation is tec-nu it's a white and green spray bottle. It's for poison ivy and stuff like that.
A rx for some triam gel will also knock it out.1 -
3.01 miles of intervals this morning, using C25K app for timing. Currently on Week 2 day 2. Avg speed 5.2mph. Had to dodge a few fallen trees on the running path but no faceplants . This morning's run in NE Georgia was after some severe thunderstorms last night. Temp was 70F but there was a blanket of fog even at 0630 which kept things really cool .
and yes @sharniecg we have excellent taste(in tickers at any rate)
ETA: @Scott6255 Zyrtec or claritin(or their generics) work well and are non-sedating for the ant bites as well.8 -
As I am sitting here at my desk, my foot is not itching at all. Much different than just a few hours ago. So I think I am on the final road to recovery.
Thanks all for the advice on the ant bites. This group always jumps in with great support and advice (on all matters...running or otherwise)!7 -
@skippygirlsmom I'm sensing a theme going here?
I think I can do 80+ but I don't want to get overzealous because when I don't meet goals, I tend to beat myself up. And quite frankly, I'm struggling a bit as it is with the burdens of multiple current issues. Since running is meant to be an escape and help all of those issues, I don't want to turn it into another stressor, you know?7 -

Have you considered one of the C25K apps? That's how a lot of runners get started. The program eases you into it, and before you know it, you're a runner! When I started I could barely run a minute.4 -

Same here. I was doing laundry one day and got a glimpse of myself in the mirror, 3 years after my last baby was born and still using baby weight as my excuse... decided to try run/walking around the block. When I survived that, I printed out the C25k plan and after a few months, I was hooked!7 -

@AprilRN10 it's always good to go up slowly in mileage. Sorry for the stressers you are having, but glad running helps.0

@polskagirl01 - I would normally join the 100 mile club but am taking a cutback month for August. I may end up there though if it cools down at all!
@MegaMooseEsq - I worked from home for years and might have some suggestions. You can PM me if you want to chat about it.rheddmobile wrote: »zbatool123 wrote: »Wow you guys sound incredible! I wish I could motivate myself to run!

@zbatool123 - I was going to recommend this or something similar as well. I didn't use it when I started but know so many who have. I was walking a lot and started adding in just a little run (run to that next tree, run to that pole, etc...) and over time found I could challenge myself to run just a bit more and more. Oh and I was a run hater, never imagining I would ever enjoy running and do it because I wanted to!4 -
August 1 - 20 km run
August 2 - 9 km run
Would have run further this morning but the weather is horrible with 40 km / hr gusts of wind so ran on the dreadmill, I couldn't do anymore. The weather is going to be similar tomorrow so I'm hoping to just tough it out. The horrible runs make the good runs good.
Total distance 29 km - goal 350 km
7 -
In for 50 miles again. It will be challenging this month. We are going on vacation at the end of this month and will be spending a lot of time in the car. 10 more work shifts until our vacation. Yay!

A big welcome to all new runners; glad to see you all here!
Today was not the typical Texas August I was expecting. 75F at the start of the run, 69F at the end, and the humidity was comfortable. Was I transported a lot further north overnight or something?
01 - 15.66
Total: 15.66 / 250 miles8 -
hahaha... 104 posts on August 1st. Count me in for an ambitious 175 miles. I make no promises about keeping up with this thread.
8/1 = 15 miles
August goal miles = 175 / 15 miles-to-date
Upcoming Races:
10/27 = Hill Country Halloween Half Marathon
11/11 = Hill Country Trivium Half Marathon (tentative depending on work schedule)
1/26/19 = Miami Tropical 5K
1/27/19 = Miami Marathon10 -
08/01/2018 - 8 miles @ 9:30
W00t! I am on the board day one! First run at my new place...
A bit of a hill out there! Felt much worse than the elevation footage seems to imply. I have more exploring to do, but this will probably be the backbone of my route. Bunch of ill-used dirt roads for the most part.15 -

We are solitary runners but social animals
ETA: @PastorVincent what's the elevation change?

hey everyone. Off to a flying start this month, managed a gentle 8km today, cause why not lol.

8/1 - 1.5 miles w3d3 of c25k
I ran outside which is amazing because it was 85F plus humidity for a real-feel of 91F. I’d been sweating all day at the zoo with my toddler, husband, his sister, niece, and nephew so what was a little bit more sweat? The sun was low enough that I was in the shade.
My Achilles’ tendons were hurting a bit - I suffer from chronically tight calves and hamstrings so I did my hips & hamstrings yoga routine once I got home.
August: 1.5/209 -
@joannedrummond5 - just make sure you run as much as possible with the wind at your back! That will make it a really fast run!
@garygse and @Scott6255 - all of that heat has transported itself a little north and west! You can have it back, I am done with it! Pretty sure @RunsOnEspresso is too!6 -
@eponine1984 I too have had chronically tight calves my entire running life. I have found some relief just in the last few months by strengthening my calves, doing various body weight excersises, then working up with dumbbells. Also foam rolling before and after running helps me.
I've heard the phrase "30 single calf raises a day keeps the doctor away".
Maybe worth trying for a couple months and see how it feels.7 -

Speedwork tonight was long intervals. Two sets of 5-7-3 minute intervals hard, with 1 minute recovery between. Those 7 minute intervals were tough. The humidity didn't seem terrible when we started but man, it got steamy. I felt like I was running through mud. That took a lot out of me.

8/1 - 5.59km
5.59/125 km
Last month I just squeaked past my 120 km goal. This month I have 11 mile & 12 mile training runs plus a half marathon so I should meet or exceed goal.
I'm still on vacation. My MIL suggested a nice route or two to me so today I headed out (yesterday was pretty lazy). Lots of hills around here and I'm still recovering from the downhill pounding on Saturday but all in all it felt good. My arm has bruised spectacularly but is healing nicely.

8/1: 1.19
Total: 1.19/100 miles
9/30 Wineglass Marathon
Last night of being on call (woohoo!), so I didn’t want to be away too long in case a crisis call came in. Also, our new warden started today at the prison, and I didn’t want to risk a bad first impression by not being available immediately should something happen. Therefore, only a little over a mile tonight. It was a “cool” 78 degrees.
Tomorrow, I shall get back into my scheduled runs and follow it up with a giant glass or three of wine!
Howdy to all of my 100 milers!!!

8/1 3.5 miles
8/2 Rest
85% humidity. Sweaty and gross. But it still felt good.
3.5/755 -
8/1 2 miles of walking on the treadmill
It was raining when I got home, but I wanted to start toward my goal of 59 miles, so walked 2 miles on the treadmill while I watched Wheel of Fortune and part of Jeopardy. Since I haven't been running much for a month or so, only playing tennis, I am planning to just walk for a week or so and then add in some running.7 -

Only a measly 564 feet. That is like 1/2 what I am used to running. But new house is down in the river valley so not as hilly.

1 August: yoga
2 August: 18.43 Last long run before my half on August 25 - a little early, but we head off to Fiji on Saturday and it will be too hot to run that far, plus, I have no sense of direction and will get lost if I do more than run around the golf course, and you'll be blowed if I'm doing that four times in a row!!
18.43 of 120km for August10 -
I'm going to go in for 200 miles this month. From 8/11-8/19 will be taking an intense class on-site and may have little or no time to run, so this is pretty aggressive.

August Running Totals (miles)
8/1 – 2.97 IEXC 5K #1
August running total to date – 2.97
Nominal August mileage goal: 180 miles
Real goals: Avoid injury. Continue to build base and train toward Oak Tree Half and Wineglass Marathon.
Today's notes – Another typical summer day, 81º F (27º C) and dewpoint 72º F. Showers threatened around 4 PM and could build back in by 7 or 8. And a low key cross country race.
I had never run the IEXC cross country course before, but I had seen the online course map. The first part is a typical cross country start across a grassy field, then it goes into the loop around Cobb's Hill Park that my club uses for cross country training, then it goes up the grassy hill that my other training program somtimes uses for hill repeats, then down and back up part of the road that loops around the reservoir, then it ducks off into trails in the woods before coming back out and joining back up with the cross country practice loop.
So I had never run the course; but I had probably run every segment of it, some of them many times. I haven't run the trails all that much, and easily could have taken a wrong turn if it weren't marked well, but I knew the general nature of the trails in that area. This was not a course that had a lot of surprises. In addition, I'd spoken with a friend yesterday and been told it runs a little short for a 5K, closer to 3 miles.
Gun time was nominally 6:30 PM, but I had agreed to show up at 4:30 to volunteer. Helped with some of the setup, learned where to mark the course for the kids' 400m and 800m races, and walked around a lot. Didn't do a running warmup, other than jogging back for more flags to mark the kids' course. The kids' races took a bit longer than the nominal plan, so the 5K didn't start till 6:51 PM according to Garmin. Fine by me; by then it was overcast and a pleasant breeze had settled in. It had become a nice evening to run.
IEXC is a low budget, low-key race series. I didn't see a whole lot of young studs at the start line. Lined up and the leading pack didn't pull way ahead of me in the first 200m. So far, so good. On the downhill next to Culver Road, I passed a couple guys. Passed a couple more when it leveled out. By the time we got to the first section of single track trail, I could see I was in 6th place. I figure I'll do well to hold that position.
Got to the grassy hill. Just like hill repeats, right? So I run up the hill, passing 2 guys on the way. Comes the road, and I can rest going downhill. (Advantage of knowing the terrain in advance.) Watch the runners ahead of me to be sure I don't miss the turn to the trail. Then the trail part of the race, trying to keep the next guy close enough so I can cross-check his path and the flags. That works.
The two guys I passed going uphill never caught up to me. By the time I hit the training loop the second time, I had stopped expecting them to. Then the guy ahead of me turned the wrong way (toward doing the training loop again. I yelled at him, and passed him on his course error. But it turns out he's 20 years younger than me, and he out-kicked me to the finish line.
I finished 4th overall, in 22:16 per Garmin. Official results are not yet posted. The RD counted entry forms and thought there were 27 runners overall, but records were scattered enough that this could be off by a few. I was first in the 60+ age group, and I know there were 2 other guys in that group because both of them assured me before the race that they would not be competitive with my time. I have a bit of a reputation locally among people who follow age group results.
Low budget, so first in the age group was choice of stuff from the awards table; the best of the lot was a coffee mug originally for the 2010 Pete Glavin Cross Country series. I'm okay with that; I got a bargain with the entry fee for the IEXC series.
Oh, yeah. Garmin and Strava reported 212 and 244 feet of elevation gain. After last Saturday's mountain running, that felt pretty flat.
