August 2018 Running Challenge

@eponine1984 I too have had chronically tight calves my entire running life. I have found some relief just in the last few months by strengthening my calves, doing various body weight excersises, then working up with dumbbells. Also foam rolling before and after running helps me.
I've heard the phrase "30 single calf raises a day keeps the doctor away".
Maybe worth trying for a couple months and see how it feels.
Makes sense, I used to do a ton of ballet which is basically all calf raises. Definitely something to try out!

Over 100 + posts in Day 1.
WOW.
Busting open August so strong, there are fiery trails left in everyone's wake.5 -
Went to meet my regular running buddy this morning, and there were two of her! No, I haven't been drinking; one of her friends (who all say they want to run but never actually show up) decided to meet us too. She said it was her first time running, but didn't want to listen to our advice about starting out with some walk intervals, and I'm not going to argue with someone who has their mind made up, that early in the morning, so off we went for 30 minutes of running. It started slow and got even slower, but she did survive We'll see if she comes back on Saturday.
We left the new girl at her car, and my friend said she felt like she could keep going with me if I wanted. I told her we had just run a full minute per kilometer slower than we usually do, so let's go faster back to her house and I'll continue on from there. I ended up with 3 fast intervals: one to her house, one down and up a hill, and one flat final kilometer, with a short recovery in-between. I was sick yeterday, and am somewhat better today, but that unfortunately may be all of the speed workout I'll get in this week. At least it's something.
Upcoming races:
August 18 Chmielakowy Half Marathon (Krasnystaw)
August 26 Kolbudy 10k, Bąkowo (Kashubia)13 -

2 August: 18.43 Last long run before my half on August 25 - a little early, but we head off to Fiji on Saturday and it will be too hot to run that far, plus, I have no sense of direction and will get lost if I do more than run around the golf course, and you'll be blowed if I'm doing that four times in a row!!
18.43 of 120km for August
@ContraryMaryMary Not only do we think the same way when doing handstands, I'm also on holiday as of an hour ago, AND I have an event that weekend (a 35 km walk).4 -
Four miles on the treadmill last night, which annoyingly isn't showing up on Garmin Connect or Strava. Looks like I'll have sync the watch using my computer rather than bluetooth. I can see it in my history, but I can't get the darn thing to upload.7

Got in a quick 1.25 before circuit training with PT this morning. Endomondo said was an 11 sec improvement in my mile time for a new PR of 9:35 then 1/4 mile cool down.
@PastorVincent Sounds like fun still. I am sure that you will quickly find hillier routes .
ETA: 74F with 94% humidity this morning. Had a rough first 100 feet, legs were so stiff, but after that felt like I was floating along.

I do 40 calf raises every morning while making breakfast. My calves were never tight, so I can't say if it would help for that, but it has made my legs more attractively balanced in appearance, and it stopped my plantar fasciitis and the heel pain I used to get where my Achilles' tendon attaches. Calf raises are a great thing to do while doing something else.
No run yesterday because we needed to meet someone and had no way to get a shower between running and going out. But we did walk four miles. And I'm posting about it because we saw something awe inspiring. There's a wooded lane nearby, which is sort of unpathed - it connects two major roads but no one ever drives down it, it's like it exists in another dimension. The only reason we know it exists is because we once used it as a detour when there was a tree down across the major road. So, great place to run. Anyway, as we turned from the bright sunny major road into the shady enclosed lane, near ground level, at the division between light and dark there was a cloud of gnats, mosquitoes, and so on. And about shoulder level, were thousands of dragonflies, more dragonflies than I have ever seen in one place, zooming around catching the gnats. That by itself was a stunning sight. But then at a higher level were hundreds of swifts, zooming about catching the dragonflies. It was amazing to watch the dogfights between dragonfly and swift - they're about evenly matched, as far as maneuverability! So that was a pretty fascinating thing. But then there was a top layer, too. High above, soaring and stooping periodically to try for one of the swifts, were six hawks of differing sizes! A couple of red tails, and some smaller hawks. We stood there awestruck watching the aerial battle for about ten minutes.
Planning to run this morning.15 -
Wow, @rheddmobile, what an amazing thing to see! Talk about your wonders of nature.

I was not really planning to get up early for a run this morning after last night's tough workout, but a friend needed to do her long run today before leaving town so I offered to join her for a chunk of it. It was a bit of a start and stop thing with a few of us joining and stopping at different times so the miles added up slowly. Then my friend tripped over a small root on the path and took a tumble. Fortunately she was just a little scraped up but I imagine she'll be sore after stopping and then she has a long drive ahead of her. By the time we got back and got her cleaned up it was time for me to go so my planned miles were a bit short.

Hmm, that is coincidental. I never have any trouble with my Garmin Forerunner 235 syncing, but after yesterday's run, it wouldn't sync all day. So I thought a power-down/power-up cycle might help. After I hit 'Yes' to confirm, it just sat there and did nothing. So I held the power-off button again, and it just slowly faded and turned off. Tried to power-up again, and it wouldn't! So I put it on the charger and it powered on and sync'd.
So I dunno, maybe it is a new firmware update or something?1 -
Hi. I’d love me to join the challenge! I’m a beginners runner, my August goal is 60 miles.9
-
@joannedrummond5 - just make sure you run as much as possible with the wind at your back! That will make it a really fast run!
@garygse and @Scott6255 - all of that heat has transported itself a little north and west! You can have it back, I am done with it! Pretty sure @RunsOnEspresso is too!
I was thankful this morning at 4:30 am was only 88 instead of the 90 it was yesterday.7 -

Yesterday and today were the exact same training runs but I was just not feeling it yesterday. Twice I just stopped. There's some *kitten* going on that impacted my run yesterday. I felt better this morning and am trying really hard not to let the *kitten* affect my training anymore.5 -
Guys there's a 4th race I want to do in December. I'm resisting lol5

8/1 = 15 miles
8/2 = 10.5 miles
It was another freakishly "cold" day (68 at 5am) in Texas this morning. I managed to squeeze in another EARLY long run before work. I told my coworkers to start throwing books at my head if they see me nodding off this afternoon (I work in a library - lots of literary ammunition available). The temperatures will start spiking into the 100s again by Saturday. It has been a fantastic 2 days of running! I am trying to take advantage of it while it lasts...

@Scott6255 Yup. First time this has happened for me too. Strange.0 -

I feel like 4 is a lot of races in a month. I am going to wait and see. I am doing no spend August and will probably do no spend September too. Having a fridge and ac go within a week of each other puts a dent in the race fund!3 -

I have 3 races on the same day, so my perspective might be a bit skewed...6 -
@shanaber Thanks for creating the thread!
I think I will set a goal of 150km for August. How realistic that is remains to be seen...
The weather is killing me - we've had around 32°C/90F for five weeks in a row now, and it's supposed to stay that way. Even in the middle of the night it doesn't drop below 20°C (and then the humidity goes up to 100% in turn). And I still haven't gotten used to it, it's killing me! I miraculously managed 180km in July, but I'm not sure if I can put up with the heat much longer without losing my mind.
Plus I'm sorta toying with the idea of a tri, so instead of running five times per week, I want to switch to 1x cycling, 2x swimming, 3-4x running per week.
August wasn't off to the best start so far. When I wanted to go running in the morning, it was already 23°C (73F), and 92% humidity. Embrace the suck! Sadly, while I had 8km planned, I gave up after 4.5km.
After work, I drove to the pool, but I had forgotten that it was a holiday in Switzerland (I work in France), and it looks like everyone decided the best way to spend a free day was at the pool. It was absolutely crowded. So one of the life guards asked me not to use my pull-kick, which made it that much harder to pursue my crawl-learning-plans; and I had to zig-zag between people all the time. And before I had finished the distance I wanted to swim, black clouds appeared and they asked everyone to leave the water, since they were afraid of a thunderstorm. Rather than standing around waiting/hoping for the clouds to disappear, I went home.
I was still planning to do some strength training before going to bed, but then a friend dropped by for a quick chat, which turned into beer & cheese until almost midnight. (and the decision to sleep in and not run this morning)
My plan for today is strength training & cycling. So the next few running kilometres will still have to wait a bit.10 -
I called Old Navy about exchanging the plum running shorts for a color that didn't show All The Sweat and the guy was super helpful - even said they'd accept the pair I'd worn and washed! Unfortunately, it turned out that the only size and color they had left in stock was the same color in XS, which doesn't work on multiple levels. Well, it's no big deal, especially since I got them for $10 a pair (no doubt why the sold out) - I'll save them for shorter runs and buy another pair of Baleafs for long runs while trolling Oiselle for sales.
I do think I'm going to return the yoga pants I got, though. The side stripe turned out to be spangly, ffs. That will not do. Even for $11.50, I don't do spangly.5 -

I chuckled a little at this1 -
Yesterday was a planned rest day, and heaven only knows what this weekend will look like (family reunion events on Friday and Saturday, plus company staying here at my house). I managed to do 3 miles after I dropped the kids off at camp today. It's been wet and humid here for what feels like weeks and weeks, but the mornings haven't been too rainy to run outside, for which I'm grateful. Some of my favorite places to run are washed out or flooded, though, so I'm sticking to more neighborhood streets and the little trail behind the train station, which is gravel where it isn't paved.
Anyway, a slow start, but I'm determined. And really excited to be in the 50 Mile Club!

Haha! I have some deep red MPG shorts that look like i peed myself on hot runs. Aint no thang 😄4 -
happens in yoga and aerial classes all the time. so i have a tendency to wear black or patterns. seems to help @MegaMooseEsq @Elise42703
-
@MegaMooseEsq, @elise4270 and @mbaker566 - I have a few pairs of shorts and capris like that too and I will wear them to run in (not to the gym though - too many eyes there). I have found several longer shirts that I wear with them that cover in the front and back so it is not so visible. One of my favorites is a $12.99 shirt from Costco. I got one in the store and ordered other colors online and they ship for free... https://www.costco.com/Tuff-Ladies'-Active-Keyhole-Tee.product.100390351.html
Nike used to have some too but theirs and UA's all seem to be getting shorter the last few seasons.3 -
August goal: 75 miles
8/1: 4.5 miles
8/2: 5 miles
9.5/75 miles
It was another beautiful, cool day for a run. I got out the door pretty quickly and managed to get 5 miles in. I know that the temperatures are supposed to be back up in the high 90s and 100s this weekend, but I am enjoying this respite from the heat while I can. Yesterday it seemed like fall to me. Tomorrow will be a rest day and my son and his girlfriend are coming in for the weekend so I am looking forward to that.
2018 races:
5/19/18: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon - 2:43:59.7. - 2nd place AG
11/10/18: Wags & Whiskers 5K3 -
Someone last month mentioned Gypsy Runner for shorts with pockets... Has anyone tried them? Any comments on fit? I am also interested in the shirts. They have some really cute designs.0
