5 miles this morning at one of the local parks. I had a late start because when I got up this morning, I realized that all of my good shorts and sports bras were dirty. I went to dinner with an old friend last night and did not do laundry as planned, so I put in a load early this morning. It was already over 80 when I started running, but I tried to stay mostly on shades trails. Not my best run, but I got it done!
@RunsOnEspresso, don’t worry about your pace. You are getting out there, and as long as you keep doing your best, I am sure you will be fine at your race. It looks like you and I are right at the same mileage for the 100 mile club.

Holy cow! I did it! My longest run to date - 17 miles. Well, actually only 16 of it was actual running and I had a few traffic light 'breaks'... but still I ran 16 miles!
My planned workout was 2 mile warmup, then 3x 4miles with 4 minute rests, then a 2 mile cool down. I figured since it was 81 degrees, sunny, and 70% humidity when I started I would swap those numbers and do 4x 3miles. It worked because I did it! I think psychologically knowing I had those planned rests really pushed me through to the end! No fuel either other than diluted low calorie Gatorade!
I ended up finishing 3.5 miles from my house... so I ended up with a total of 20.5 miles for the day! I don't count the walks after my runs, but 20.5 miles on my poor feet and I'm starting to build some confidence that maybe I could finish a marathon. Not very fast, but I could finish one!
I treated myself to a triple shot of espresso over ice from Starbucks afterwards

Today I topped 200 miles ran in 2018! That’s kind of mind-boggling. Around halfway I’d just powered over a pedestrian bridge and was feeling like a badass when something tapped me on the metaphorical shoulder and said “remember how fortunate you are to be able to do this right now.” (Okay, my first thought was “blessed” but then my brain started a semantic argument about the appropriateness of that word so I decided to change it to fortunate, even thought neither word is exactly right, because that’s just how my brain rolls.)
Anyhow, those miles are dedicated to @KeepRunningFatboy and to the memory of myself just a couple of years ago who never would have imagined that I’d be running eight miles today and loving every moment of it. Except the time spent looking for a drinking fountain. I’d rather not carry water with me, but it really throws off my groove when I start thinking about wanting a drink. I don’t know that I really needed it at either point (around 5.25 and 7 miles) but I definitely wanted it, and keeping my eye out for a fountain was distracting enough that I ended up walking a bit at both points.
I would have managed a sub 11 minute pace if I hadn’t had those two walking breaks, but so it goes. The next time I run that route I’ll know where the fountains are. And why are there so many more portapotties than water fountains? I'm certainly glad the johns are there, but water would be nice too.
I should hit 50 miles after my first couple of runs next week, so it's onto my stretch goal of 100K! Barring something unfortunate happening I think I can make it even without another long run until September - my second 5K race is coming up next week, woo!
And now, having had the traditional post-long run brunch, I will be having the traditional post-brunch nap.

I missed getting my 5 miles in under an hour by less than 2 minutes. But I broke my previous PR by 4 minutes from the last time I ran 5 miles - so I'm getting there. Slow and steady. I had a really slow 3rd mile, which I made up in my last mile, by pushing myself a bit more. Overall, pace was pretty consistent. Forcing myself to slow down has helped a lot. I now try to judge my easy days by singing to myself as I run to make sure I'm not running too fast. If I can't sing to myself, then I'll make myself take a slower pace in order to gain that easy pace back. It's the only way I know how to internally fight my struggle to not want to run faster. I keep telling myself it will all pay off later.
I'll surpass my monthly goal next week. I've got another 20+ miles planned for the week, with only 13 miles left to go.10 -
Package pickup today. I won some free socks. I think they might fit my 6 year old LOL.
The smoke is supposed to clear tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully it stays gone or at least low until after 3 PM Sunday - that's an hour after the marathon cutoff. It's really awful right now.
I have shirt envy - what a beautiful shirt!
Hoping your air clears and stays clear. I had seen your previous posts about air quality without quite realizing where you lived - it's been a scary season as far as wildfires all over the place it seems!3 -
@MegaMooseEsq the worst is when you find a drinking fountain and it doesn’t work!!! Nooooooo... I hate carrying water too so I’m always on the lookout for water stops.2

@Elise4270 Just saw your post above.
I sent condolences from all of us to Dennis' wife.
I told her about us wanting to add to his list, and asked which family member would be best to help with the technical aspects.
(On your Strava runs, you can click the "Add Friend" button and the friend (ie his son using his account) can accept the add, and it will post the run on the KeepRunningFatboy Strava feed.
She recommended their son could help, so I have sent him a message this morning.
That nice. I really hate to bother his family too much. Im such an introvert, I'd be a bit irritated with the family disruption. Thats just my wierdness. My social circle is warped. It probably more of a scribble than a circle with unpredictable and invisible boundaries. Some potentially hostile. All very neurotically patrolled.
I think, looking back through his strava activity we can get a good idea of his runs. And i think i may have him on athlinks... But if hes already got a state/place and someone wants to do one for him, i dont think it should be dismissed because hes already done it. Ya know, no rules. Just run that mfn mile 😁
So not only to finish his list, but to do his list as a collective, would be the goal. But again if 2 or 13 people wanna do the same place.... I say it counts. We are one.
@Elise4270 he does indeed have an Athlinks profile. Each and everyone of his 45 marathons logged if you go to results and select Marathon sort. Should be easy from there to determine which states are left.
Right on!
I have something started. I got the first and last page. Group effort ya know. I'm alright delagating and asking for direction and help since it is a collective effort.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1YnOSKyGFudwmqd6LeJJTHSxSTewBcaWKaJYWNJnPftQ/edit?usp=drivesdk
I think its unlocked and ready. Any problems, ill try to catch it tomorrow. My butt hurts from sitting on this cardboard scratching block tethered to the modem because my weefee wont connect on this dern laptop.
My next marathon is Wineglass. New York is a state that Dennis got to on his own.
But I see that Massachusetts is missing from the spreadsheet. I assume that if Dennis had run a marathon in Massachusetts, @Elise4270 would have picked it up. As things are, I'm planning on running a marathon in Massachusetts next April. Can't register till September 10, but I've got a calendar reminder to do so.
I am somewhat ambivalent about claiming I'm running in memory of someone when I'd be running anyway, but if someone else is running the project they can feel free to add me running Boston 2019 for Dennis.6 -

@garygse is in 151st place in the Strava Distance Challenge for August, out of nearly 180,000 people.
To put that in perspective, a guy I admire like a guru who has just done 10 marathons in 10 days is in 225th.
Absolutely awesome.
That is especially impressive giving the amount of cheating on Strava in those things (for reasons I can not fathom).
Dh was telling me about that the other day, the unbelievable milage others have put in.
You think that's real? Or...
I have no way to know for sure, but let's just say some of the posts are suspicious and leave it at that.0 -

The. Worst. My long run a couple of weeks ago where I failed to find the lake I’d planned on running around had a broken water fountain along the way as well. That definitely added to the overall badness of the run!0 -

I don't like to carry water, either, but there are no fountains where I normally run. I've can pretty much put drinking out of my head up to about 5 miles. When I was training for my half marathon a few years back, I could go 7 miles without drinking, but only if it was cold outside. Not in the summer heat. I have a much harder time not stopping for a drink when I'm on the treadmill, but I wonder if that is just because I'm so bored.
Speaking of...I did 3 miles on the treadmill today. It took me 40 minutes, in spite of speedwork up to a 12-minute mile. I think stamina is just as important as speed, @RunsOnEspresso , but I understand wanting to be faster. You'll get there. One nice thing about being slow is that we're always working on that mental game of keeping at it--we're training ourselves to not give up.

Today's notes – Long run this morning with the training program, open to the public as a course preview for the Rochester Marathon/Half Marathon. Forecast called for 68º F (20º C) at 7 AM, rising to 73º F by 10 AM. Dew point this morning was 66º, and there was a chance of rain. I expected a warm, humid, uncomfortable 20 miles.
Drove through light and heavy rain to get to the beach, and there was a light rain as we started to run. There was also a pleasant breeze off the lake. It was much more comfortable that I had anticipated. Because I expected worse running weather and potential inconvenience refilling bottled, I wore a hydration belt with 4 bottles. This was inconvenient early in the run, as this is the first time this season I've used that belt. Turned out my standard, familiar 2-bottle belt would have been good enough; I think I'll wear that one on race day and count on in-race hydration to supplement.
The first 8 miles were the course preview, sort of. They were an out and back with not quite 4 miles on the race course, run in reverse on the way out and in the race direction on the way back. In this case, it was uphill out and downhill back. Had one guy wanting an 8:30 pace, and we ended up pushing it a bit on the first 8. Then he was done, and I went off to run the rest on my own. The next 7 miles were very pretty, with 2 or 3 miles along the lake shore with that pleasant breeze and a view of small but pretty whitecap waves. Ran a section of the Lake Ontario State Parkway trail that I hadn't run before; for a trail right next to a limited access highway, it's awfully nice.
The last 5 were a bunch of familiar roads with more hills, as is fitting for a training program aiming at the Rochester Marathon. I'm happy with it because Oak Tree has hills. Got to about 17.7 miles, and realized I was well short of where the tic sheet said 17.7 miles would be. And my ankles were muttering at me. Adjusted the route to chop out a major downhill, ran back to base (pausing for the lift bridge to go back down after a huge ship passed by on the river), and did a bit of OCD in the parking lot to get my 20.
A few hours later, it does not appear I did any serious damage to my ankles. I'm content with the course adjustment and being healthy instead of getting closer to 21 miles and maybe not being so healthy. While the 20 miles did let me know it was significant, I was in a bit better shape after today's run than I was after last week's 20 miles; and that's two more 20 mile runs in preparation for Wineglass than I had in preparation for Boston. Which is a good thing, because I might not get another shot at a 20 mile run before September 30. The race calendar gets potentially busier in September than I'd prefer in an ideal world. (Additional races not listed below because I'm not registered, but it is possible that I could be running some serious cross country races on September 9 and September 23.)
Afterwards, I realized that I hadn't got any pictures of the lake or the river today. Sigh.

The. Worst. My long run a couple of weeks ago where I failed to find the lake I’d planned on running around had a broken water fountain along the way as well. That definitely added to the overall badness of the run!
I feel like this partly explains why Memphis is one of the fattest cities in the nation - only one of the parks where I run has a single water fountain at the trail head plus a toilet, none of the others have water fountains, nothing that is not a park has any fountains, and there are never potties unless there is a race that day. Also, you will definitely be arrested if you try to use the woods, so better hold it until you can drive to a fast food place and use theirs. When I run trails I have to stop at the regular trail head for the paved parts, use the single john for the whole park, get back in my car and drive several miles to the trail head for the woods trails which has no amenities. I've tried walking from the john to the trails and I need to pee by the time I get there unless I deliberately dehydrate myself, which is not a good idea on a run.4 -

Ug, that sounds like a drag. As much as I'd like there to be more fountains, there was still one along the 4-5 mile stretch of riverfront I ran this morning, plus a number of portapotties (at least of couple of them double-wides), and a public restroom with fountain and zippy water-bottle filler at the falls park around mile 7. There aren't any fountains or toilets on the Greenway, which was the first four miles of my run but the rest stops at the lakes and major parks are pretty reliable.1 -

If I finish my marathon in Vegas we can cross Nevada off the list. Someone else may have to pick up AZ as I am not sure I am meant to do marathons.4

RACE RECAP for Chmielakowy Half Marathon (Krasnystaw, Poland)
I tried to start out at an easy pace, but apparently it wasn't enough for the temperature/humidity/whatever my problem was today. The course was beautiful and varied, going through pretty countryside and then into a forest, before coming back out to the roads for some nasty hills leading back into the town and finish line. There were people from the festival flying around above us on some kind of gliders, and there were a ton of volunteers - very frequent water stations, medical personel on bikes going back and forth, water curtains and people standing in front of their homes with garden hoses, but it was still hot for running and I struggled a lot in the middle/late kilometers of the race.
One cool thing that happened was in the forest trail section. I was running along and looked over to see a dragonfly passing me. He was big and beautiful, really detailed coloration, and was going along the path just a little faster than me. So I said, "Ok, I'll race you," and sped up. So then we were going at the same speed, staying right with each other. It was so surreal, at one point I just reached my hand out towards him because he was right there. But I didn't want to touch him and interrupt his flight path, so kept my hand about an inch away. The whole thing probably lasted only about 20 seconds, and then he took off into the woods, but WOW that was cool.
Once we were out of the woods and back on asphalt, things got rough for me. Towards the end I saw one particular hill ahead of me and said outloud, "nope!" and started walking it. Any hope of a PR had already disappeared on the hills in the woods earlier, so I wanted to try to salvage any sense of enjoyment I could find. Running up that hill was not going to help me there. So while I was walking, several people ran past me, and I noticed that one was a lady my age with a cool team shirt and Ironman compression socks. I had passed her much earlier, but there she went out ahead of me, oh well. Somewhere past the top of that hill I passed the 19k marker and something in me switched over. I got mad (at the race, I think) and decided I had enough and was running the rest of the way without stopping, no matter how much it hurt. And then I remembered @KeepRunningFatboy . So now I'm mad/intensely determined, and getting emotional about a guy I didn't even know, and I re-passed all of the people who had just passed me when I walked that hill. The final kilometer was almost my fastest of the whole race (second only by a few seconds to my first kilometer). At the finish line I wasn't sure if I was going to throw up or ugly cry, so found a spot off to the side immediately to sit down, catch my breath and get myself under control. I finished in an OK time for me, better than my typical training run of that distance, but slower than my 2 road half marathons. I'm happy with it - it was the best I could do on this day.
Then I took a wrong turn walking back to the bag drop and turned what should've been a 700-meter walk into a 4-kilometer walking tour of the town, including a section of the festival I didn't know was even there (that was the point when I finally asked someone for directions). Ugggh!

@MobyCarp I left a hyperlink on the first page to his athlinks page. If I missed something, like Massachusetts or anyone needing to double check me. I have a terrible tendency to overlook detail.
I thought during my run today.... about Dennis. I swear he's my coach now. Good advice from somewhere, helping me find "comfortable " and settle into a pace.
And. So many of us arent marathon material. Many races have relays. Itd be amazing if we can get some with a team effort. I'm down for just about anywhere. Even if he's done the state.
Currently i am unable to take vacation October through mid November, and I'm still on the mend. But spring would be doable. We all should just go to Hawaii for a relay, then Alaska. Ooo I wanna do one at night when its light.10 -

Ooo I wanna do one at night when its light.
Missed the link the first time I looked. The athlinks page shows no races by Dennis in Massachusetts. I'm impressed that he ran the Buffalo Marathon 3 weeks after running Flying Pig, twice. I know I'm not going to try running back to back marathons that close together, ever.
Edit to add: Just to be clear, I noticed the spreadsheet was missing MA because I was specifically looking for states where I've run marathons: NY and MA. I didn't check for any other missing states.2 -
@sarahthes - I sure hope the smoke clears for your race! Having done it running in smoke is not a good thing or fun in any way. Will they go forward with the race if it is really bad?
@garygse - awesome, just awesome!
@RunsOnEspresso - I am not sure any of us could run and keep our HR in Zone 1 depending on how you have your zones set to. I usually think of zone 1 being around 50% of MHR and what I would normally hit on a walk. It is good to go slow and to keep your HR low but maybe trying to keep it that low while running is not reasonable.
@_nikkiwolf_ - love your memorial 🌺 run with the church in the center! I had that same introspective run the other day just after we found out about Dennis. It really made me think about being able to run and how grateful I am to be healthy, fit and strong!
@AlphaHowls - I can't imagine not having a smartphone! I can understand the concerns but there is so much it can do!
@BruinsGal_91 - congratulations on your AG place!
@zdyb23456 and @MegaMooseEsq - congratulations on the distance PRs! Awesome job!
@mobycarp - I missed pictures! It sounds lovely though!
@elise4270 - I think a MFP relay team(s) would be so much fun if we can work out the logistics!
I hate carrying water too (I do have a belt and bottles but hate it still). There are fountains where I run and they mostly work but there is only one that is in the shade most of the morning and has water that isn't hot... note I did not say cold - none have cold water. I did try taking water the other day by shoving the bottle in my pocket - it worked ok but even putting mostly ice in it was already warm water within a mile or less. I never had much of a problem being thirsty unless it is really hot out or on a long run, but now that I can't have gum when I run my mouth gets so dry. It isn't so much thirst as I just need to get some water in my mouth.
I started my morning with my usual stretches and foam rolling then headed out with the pup for a run. We have had marine layer clouds in the morning the last couple of days making it look cool outside but it is deceivingly warm and humid. Fortunately I got 7 out of 9 miles in on my long run before the sun actually broke through making it feel much hotter. At one point it actually smelled like rain but I didn't see or feel any so maybe I was imagining (wishing) it was! By the time I got home I was soaked and dripping, seriously dripping sweat off my hat and my shoes were squishing! I grabbed a towel and headed right out to the pool (yes in my running clothes but I did take my shoes off 😅). It is amazing how wonderful it feels to just swim some laps after a run!
I ate some toast and PB before I ran and took some of the SKRATCH fruit chews with me, having a couple about every 2.5-3 miles. It really seemed to help and while my stomach was complaining of being hungry the chews seemed to take the edge off and kept my energy level up better. I usually don't have anything until at least halfway and by then it doesn't help. The first couple of miles were typically tough as were the last when the sun Ade it so hot but all in all it felt pretty great.

I have decided not to run the HM I typically run in December after 5 years in a row... instead I am going to admin some 5 and 10k's. One is a series of 3 races I want to do with a friend who is getting back into running and the other is a 10k that is run in October as part of the Surf City races. I will be adding them into my list later though once I am signed up for them.
My completed and upcoming races. Let me know if you will be running them too.
02/04/18 - Surf City Half Marathon
05/05/18 - Cinco de Miles 5k
07/22/18 - San Francisco 2nd Half Marathon
02/03/19 - Surf City Half Marathon
05/11/19 - Santa Barbara Wine Country Half Marathon11 -
I just registered for a 5K for next weekend. It supports the charity Pints for Prostates, so the medal is a bottle opener, which is cool.10

I was planning my runs for next month when it hit me that I’ll basically have completed the Higdon half marathon novice program by mid October, especially if I switch from the 5 to 10k for the TC marathon weekend. I should be hitting around 20 miles per week through September, and should have at least one, maybe two ten mile runs under my belt over the next six weeks. And there’s going to be two half marathons on October 20 and 21st that I could get to without too much trouble. Bum bum BUM...12

If you see cheating, flag it.
I always do, and the cheating always gets removed.
Strava is serious business!6 -
Here's the link @Elise4270 posted to @KeepRunningFatboy's list of marathons on Athslinks:
https://www.athlinks.com/athletes/232268854/results
So far we've got plans for new additions to Dennis' uncompleted states of:
@Scott6255 Houston, Texas
@MobyCarp Massachusetts
@RunsOnEspresso Las Vegas, Nevada@Elise4270 Just saw your post above.
I am somewhat ambivalent about claiming I'm running in memory of someone when I'd be running anyway, but if someone else is running the project they can feel free to add me running Boston 2019 for Dennis.
I understand that ambivalence. My 30 km in memory of Dennis was the next run I had planned. It was a coincidence it happened to be the day after I heard the news.
However the important thing is that I, and all of us running our memorial runs, remembered him.
The fact that it suits our schedule is part of what makes us able to KeepRunning.
I think the important thing with the marathon list is that we add to his list, and remember him when on our run and when putting our marathon on his list.
It's all keeping his memory going.8 -

Did you add it? If i got 49/50 i say thats not so bad i did have to fix my WiFi, and clean up cat barf, and be super quiet while dh did his meditation, also i just woke up when i added athlinks data, omg and there was no almond milk for my coffee. So can i have a pass?
Thanks! I'll have a look at it.
ETA and there are a lot of "M" states...3 -

I was looking for Maryland as that may be a State I might possibly run again in the future. I don’t see it on the list but I saw on his athlinks that he has run Baltimore (same race I have run). I think there may be one or two others missing but I haven’t double checked the list. Also, should we add Washington, D.C.? I was considering the MCM next year. Thanks for putting the list together in the first place, Elise.

Okay. @orphia @MobyCarp i added missing Massachusetts and added columns so we can assign the states. Y'all might have a look and check me.
Oh i did miss hes done Nevada. Sorry @RunsOnEspresso . I still left you to do Nevada in the sheet. I see no reason we can't re-run a state for him. He did Revel Mt Charleston April 29 ,2017.
Hes done Oklahoma. But if i can get to the venue he ran, I'd do a relay or half in his memory.4 -

I love this idea. I had a thought that we could do some type of 24-hour virtual relay across the globe, so that for 24 hours someone is always running. We could sign up for 30 or 60 minute time slots and take and post an after pic. One of our local running stores does something like this to celebrate global running day and it’s pretty cool. Since we have quite a few time zones represented here, I think it could work. I also know of at least one or two MRC members who like to run in the middle of the night 😉 I love the idea of a traditional team relay race as well too!

Yes i just added Maryland. 😊
