Cliff notes -
A lot of people have tried it.
Some liked it, some didn't.
Some had success, some didn't.
Almost entirely based on how well it does or doesn't line up with your normal eating preferences.
Negligible inherent health benefits.15 -
I've been doing it for a while now. I really like it. The science behind it is really cool. But only when you clean fast. If you aren't clean fasting, it's just like any other diet.
Honestly I haven't been on in a long while, only got on to see if anyone was doing it to to chat with lol32 -
I have been doing CICO and haven't lost anything since July 1st. Same pound, losing and gaining daily. Literally lost maybe 0.5-1lb in 7 weeks - and yes, I weigh and log EVERYTHING. I was ready to see a doctor over this.
Have been doing IF for 3 days and have lost 4lbs already! I haven't changed a thing about my diet, just my eating window.

Congrats, you're losing water.
Also you can't "do" Cico.28 -
I settled on my variation of IF (similar to "warrior IF" if you need a buzz term to go with it) after struggling to fit calorie counting and meal prep into my rather crazy lifestyle.
What it boils down to is CICO - how you get there varies. My natural eating patterns work well with my chosen plan, as do my needs and normal eating patterns during race weekends.
I choose to go with one actual meal a day at dinner, where I eat whatever I feel like. I have my morning coffee with creamer, and then if I'm hungry (most days) I have a small (~150-200 cal) plant/nut/protein based snack.
The large dinner has meant my morning workouts have been great with no ill effects, and my energy most of the day until the very end of the work day is great.
The scale has finally started a steady drop for me, which is huge for me and works no matter if it's a normal work day, a race weekend, traveling for work or races/track, etc.
Certainly wouldn't work great for some people, but is working well for me. With my calorie allotment each day, it's nearly impossible for me to consume over my expected deficit even with drinks.8 -
Did 5:2 for weight loss - liked it.
Did 16:8 at maintenance - disliked it.
Weight tracked my calories with both (and neither) eating patterns.7 -

Funny how we're all different. 16:8 and I get along quite well, it fits my natural eating pattern. 5/2, for me, is just a hard 'no'. Even the thought of eating only 500 calories a couple days a week makes me cringe. I'd be chewing the drywall off the kitchen walls.
And yes, my weight tracks my calorie intake on 16:8 as well - both while losing and while in maintenance.7 -

What exactly is nonsensical?- Is it the idea that hormone levels cycle throughout the day?
- Is it that insulin levels are naturally lower in the morning?
- Is it that certain foods/substances can trigger insulin spikes?
- Is it that these hormone cycles have an impact on weight management?
- Is it all of it?
- Is it something else?
As it pertains to this thread (to stay on topic), I think what's specifically being called into question is the "clean fasting" nonsense:
1) That IF is only effective if you "clean fast".
2) That anything with flavor spikes insulin.
3) That your body cannot heal in the presence of insulin.
4) That it takes 3 weeks for your body to "adjust and start healing itself".
And subsequently:
5) That the body needs a "rest" from feeding.
I haven't seen any of your points addressed or argued either way.
I never said it was only effective with a clean fast. It's what the clean fast does. sorry I'm not good at explaining stuff. I'm trying but everything gets so jumbled in my brain, it's hard.
Anytime you start a diet your body has to adjust to it. I'm not sure what's so crazy about that.
"The science behind it is really cool. But only when you clean fast."
This sounds like you're claiming that IF has specific documented benefits and those benefits are only available to those who are "clean fasting."
As in the science behind IF with clean fasting is cool.
You have not been able to produce a single piece of science so far.
I haven't been able to or I'm just not because I don't have to lol if you actually wanted to know you would research it yourself.
All the research in the world isn't going to give us insight into what specific things you were thinking of when you made that claim. You're asking us to do research to figure out what you meant.
One of the first things I said when i posted about clean fasting was to research it yourself. Pretty easy to do.
People are asking what you meant. Since the research is easy to do, it should be very easy for you to post links to what made your mind up. Then we can all discuss the same information and progress in the conversation.
All you've done so far is cite Dr Axe and post a blog link. If those aren't the things that convinced you that "clean fasting" has specific benefits, what did?
A lot of hours on google and talking to my doctor.
The same Google that led you to that Dr. Axe link? Do you see the issue here?
Access to information is useless without a corresponding willingness and/or ability to critically evaluate that information. Hours on Google are also capable of convincing people that lizard people are the secret power behind all world governments and religions.
Sorry hit post to soon and it wouldn't let me on.
A lot of hours on google. Not clicking the first link and agreeing with it. I don't blindly follow anyone or anything. I also read multiple people's stories having done it. My doctor is the same man who has time and again told me not to do fad diets and the like. He wouldn't let me do something if he even slightly thought bad of it.
I never understood people who asked for sources. If i didn't understand something I wouldn't ask for sources.. I'd research it myself.
Hours on Google can't convince you of that unless you're really into conspiracy theories.
Someone who is passionate and educated on a subject is usually able to provide information for those who want to learn more. They tend to remember learning about it themselves and are able to recall the specific studies, arguments, or sources that convinced them that a certain approach or POV was correct. If someone has good reasons for believing what they believe, sharing the justification for their belief isn't a hardship. It's actually relatively easy for people with a solid argument to recreate the learning that took place to get them there.
You don't follow anything blindly. Okay. So what convinced you?
Maybe you should start asking people for sources when they recommend things to you. It's an excellent tool to help you evaluate their argument and you're able to bypass simply having faith in what people tell you. Your doctor, for instance. Did you ask him why he thought IF was a good idea? Maybe it would have been helpful for you to understand how he came to his conclusion that it was a good idea for you to do it. Not only would you have a better understanding of your own way of life, it would be easy for you to communicate why you're doing it to people who have never met your doctor and have no reason to be impressed by what he does or doesn't recommend.
If someone tells you something that doesn't seem quite right, asking "Why do you think that?" is usually much more productive than just doing your own research.
I can't communicate properly. About anything. Ever. Speaking in general is a hardship for me. You have no idea how hard it is for me. So for me, researching for myself is easier. So is telling people flat out to research for themselves to cut things short and save my head. Because everything is too much.
My doctor and I did talk about it. He used big words. Basically said the health benefits of it were great for me.
I'm sorry for your troubles.
I will say in the research I've done about IF, I don't see any reliable evidence that it offers specific benefits for the general public. There are people who find it easier to control their calorie intake when they use IF and that makes it a benefit for them in weight management. But as far as the rest of the claims made for it, I don't see anything supporting the more dramatic claims being made for it. Big words or not, some people are getting way ahead of what seems to be currently documented.15 -
my experience with IF and what would be considered anecdotal evidence, is that I have always done fasting, 16:8 mostly but sometimes 18:6. for me There was NO difference between "clean" fasting and non clean fasting. I gained weight fasting and I have een lost and maintained my weight fasting. it hasnt made any difference in my health issues otherwise. what has is finding the proper "diet" for my health issues, being active and taking meds that I do need to take. I have tried not taking them and for ME diet and exercise alone is not enough.
even when I didnt fast and there was a time I did and nothing changed. lost weight the same. health issues stayed the same. it was only when I started eating a certain way that for Me,my health markers improved, losing weight helped some but some of the health issues I had happened when I was at a healthy weight(which was up until my mid 30s. I dont fast for any specific reason except for that Im not hungry in the morning and Im not a breakfast eater 99.9% of the time. I have no appetite early in the day. I eat when I get hungry which for me is after noon sometimes as late as 3pm and I usually stop eating at 9pm sometimes earlier. But in my experience which is more than 30 years worth. fasting for me made no difference in anything, I even have RA and it makes no difference for me in inflammation. my levels were high fasting until I started weight training and then my levels went down.
But again this is MY experience and its not going to be the same for everyone else. The only thing fasting does for me is keeps my blood pressure really low and I mean 90s/60s but once I eat its around 116/76 (of course it varies) which is in the normal range. its never high though1 -
Intermittent fasting is great! Im currently doing the 20:4 fast and it's working wonders. IF is the fastest growing fitness trend and it actually works! Above all it's free which is why there is a big backlash against it. Many weight loss companies and fitness gurus have a lot to lose because it's simple to do and you don't need to buy books or programs to do it. Cheers to a healtheir future!21

IF is simply choosing when to eat. What works is if it helps you create a calorie deficit by eating less.10 -
This thread is in the General Health, Fitness and Diet forum. Let me remind you of the OP:Hey!! Has anyone done intermittent fasting? If yeah how is it going for you guys ?? I just started my first week now
OP is not required to defend her dietary choices, nor is she required to provide scientific evidence to back up her dietary choices. The OP specifically states that she is looking for folks who have done IF. Sure, ask questions to better understand, but leave the debate and 'scientific defense' in the debate section. To that end, I have split out 5 pages of what turned into a debate and placed it into the appropriate section. If you are in this thread looking for that conversation, check out the link below.
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10687890/intermittent-fasting-clean-fasting-debate
Please do not post your debate here, or it may be looked upon as trolling if it's reported.
As a side note, asking another poster to defend their opinion with science is easy to do. If you disagree, what is the harm in sharing YOUR scientific links rather than attempting to shame others for not posting links that you feel appropriately defend their position? There are ways of getting your point across without putting others on the defensive and coming across as an internet bully (unintentionally, I'm sure).
If you have any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to PM me. I'll be happy to discuss.

2nd day of intermittent fasting. I'm doing 14/10 (read it was better than 16/8 for women) and so far I'm just really hungry. I've been used to eating breakfast for years so it's rough getting up and waiting hours to eat. I don't think I ate enough yesterday, so I'm going to try to eat a little more and at least get to my calorie goal. I'm going to commit to it for a week.and then decide if it's for me. So far it's not looking good. Lol2

I would recommend you drink apple cider vinegar and green tea during your fasted period. Both are great for curbing hunger, especially apple cider vinegar. They are also both great detoxers. Some days I fast for nearly 24 hours with minimal hunger by consuming both of those. Also, if you do buy apple cider vinegar I would recommend you dilute it with water and drink it with a straw. ACV can be a little rough on your teath so drinking it with a straw will help minimize contact with your teeth. The first week or two are the most difficult to overcome but then your body gets use to it and it's almost effortless. It will feel more like a lifestyle change in eating habits. Continue monitoring calories during during your eating window which is obvious we are all doing, being that that's the whole purpose of this app haha. @SuzOh19 -

I did an 18:6 for four weeks a couple years ago. Eating window from 6 am to noon. After the first week, the hunger pangs subsided. It worked well for weight loss, but that was because we were only getting abour 800 calories per day. I should also mention that it was on a meditation retreat in Thailand. As soon as the retreat was over, I went back to my normal eating patterns. It just didn't suit my lifestyle.2nd day of intermittent fasting. There is some evidence that ACV helps but its because it makes you nauseous. So drinking it can make you feel sick and not comsume calories in ab litibum eating, lol.11 -

They really don't. It's really popular to say on "pop" diet fad web sites that they do, but there is no evidence that's the case. Usually the idea is that they increase metabolism, but that's actually pretty easy to measure, and they don't help.
And detoxes aren't a thing:
https://examine.com/nutrition/detoxes-an-undefined-scam/
IF is a great strategy for a lot of people, there's no reason to get it mixed up in lots of unfounded diet industry woo. I do want to add some people simply can't do IF, whether for health reasons (like low blood sugar) or lifestyle or appetite issues, and they shouldn't be made to feel like they just have to try harder or are doing it wrong.10 -

You can try an earlier eating window (don't eat late instead of not eating early) or maybe it just isn't right for you. The key is finding a way of eating (meal schedule, macro distribution, etc) that makes it as easy as possible for you to hit the right calories and feel energetic and happy. There's no one right way. I drifted into IF when I realized I was basically forcing myself to eat breakfast. So I just started eating at lunchtime. But recently I found myself starving every morning, so I went back to eating breakfast. Hasn't changed my calorie needs at all. Good luck!7 -

What do you mean by "it works"? It works if it helps control hunger and calories. But there is not evidence that it does more than that. I've done it for years. If I eat in the morning, I am hungrier all day long. But I can put off eating without hunger indefinitely. I usually eat a moderate protein based mid day meal and a substantial dinner. Tonight was a 12 oz NY strip with roasted fingerling potatoes, grilled baby onions and a salad with a couple of glasses of wine. Stayed within my calories for the day. So, it worked.
Not everyone is like me. Some people need to eat in the morning for whatever reason. Blood sugar, habit, energy level, whatever. For them, IF doesn't work. There is nothing more to it than that. There is no magic and I can't really comment in any kind of charitable way to the woo and myth by the poster quoted by AnvilHead, so let my lack of comment speak for itself.4 -

Well if it helps to curb appetite, then it does help in weightloss.6 -
