@MountainLaurel787 I am glad you decided to join us. Please don't be a stranger and jump in and tell us some things. I used to wait until 8:00 PM to start drinking...the wife headed to bed around 9:30. No telling when I would make it...but that was the old me.
My wife is very supportive about me being AF, but I don't really talk about being AF anywhere but at home and here. And here helps.7 -
Thank you JenT. My husband is recovering and doing very well. He had a stint put in and will start rehab soon. He was out of the hospital within 48 hours. We have started a heart healthy diet and we're finding that we really miss the salt and some flavor. I'm still looking for those "magic" recipes that taste delicious!
As far as being sober that night, I'm not really religious, but I find myself saying, "Thank you God" over and over again. To be honest, my original goal was to make it to 30 days. It didn't seem as overwhelming as saying I was never going to drink. The second night in the hospital, I struggled a lot. The nurses (and my husband) told me to go home and get some rest. I could just come back in the morning. Immediately, my mind started down the Vodka road. My nerves were shot and I hadn't slept and I thought, hey, a drink will help me settle down and get some sleep. But that's not what would have happened and I knew it. There isn't such a thing as one drink for me anymore. I slept in a recliner next to the man who needed and deserved 100% of me.
It's been hectic since we got home. Lots of doctor appointments, visitors, learning cardio language, new cooking skills, etc. But I know things will slow down again. I will be here often.

And thank you Ed_Zilla. I totally relate. I'm not sure that I ever had a bedtime. I just knew I'd eventually get there. I like the idea of being able to talk about it here, because I don't talk about it anywhere else. I appreciate the welcome.8

@MountainLaurel787 Hoping the best for you and your hubby....THIS is the place to be to share the good & the bad...the successes & the struggles … WELCOME!6

Welome@MountainLaurel787 thanks for sharing your story waves to all and enjoy your day AF of course7

Welcome @MountainLaurel787. What a scary story. Congrats on being and staying sober through this! It seems like an easy fix to reach for a drink when we're dealing with extra stress, but knowing it will snowball on you and leave you in a worse shape is a good reason to stay away from it.
I can offer you some suggestions to use in place of salt for your cooking ~ I use a lot of herbs and make my own combinations to avoid salt or sugar that are often found in the prepackaged blends. Lemon juice (amazing how a little citrus can change the flavor of a dish), balsamic vinegar (along with some garlic and spices makes a great marinade!) and my very favorite thing to add to a lot of dishes is some simple caramelized onions! They taste amazing and can be added to a lot of foods. Just some ideas!7 -
Wow, no drinking has really helped my skin! A few people commented on my skin! I will take it!

Had my annual today and numbers looked very good. Told the doc I quit alcohol. Doc was impressed.
Who wants to do 3-months dry starting March, tomorrow. This will take commitment and fight.
Come on lets do 3 months dry...12 -

Nice to hear about cool outcomes from AF!! Healthy bods , beautiful skin.. and much more..
We all have some grunt!, (I have to talk to myself too) just have to put it in the right things. Don't let anyone or anything weaken us.
So , put your shine on, light your lamp!... we going to make it..xo6 -
@norminv I would LOVE to do three months but can’t seem to do one month. Also, I have big plans for St. Pat’s Day.
I will try for 28 out of 30 this month. I know you can do it.7 -

New goal...I'm in!5

Happy March!
January=0 drink days
February=2 drink days
I'm in for the challenge of 3 months! I need some mojo cuz yesterday was tough! Got into an argument with my g-sons dad and I came super close to wanting to drink!6 -
Veggiegirl...thanks for the suggestions. I have plans to make a small herb garden when it warms up. And I like the idea of experimenting with vinegars and spice. It's amazing how much sodium is in our regular food!3

Why make myself sick cuz hes an *kitten*? Also was giving my daughter the silent treatment cuz I'm tired of their constant fights, its not good for the little ones OK here we go! Have a fabulous AF day all6

Today is 5 weeks AF.
I noticed being AF is a lot like saying how old a baby is. You start out with days, then weeks, then months, then years.
NOTE TO SELF: I am guessing that between 2 and 3 months I am supposed to switch from weeks AF to months AF

Hahaha! So funny, and true! I was just thinking the same thing! I'm coming up on 7 weeks, but I think when I hit the 8 week mark, i'll just start saying months. Not sure why, it just sounds better! 😆😂7 -
I am glad so many are on board with the 3-month challenge....we shall keep each other honest9
-
Great idea NormInv! My track record hasn't been the best-but count me in for three months. Happy First of March!5

Can there be a list of substitute drinks that people could choose from as a fall back if they get into a spot?
My go to is diet tonic (sweetened with stevia) or kombucha which doesn't make me want alcohol and doesn't effect me in any bad way. Some have said it has a little percentage but it's not sold in the liquor shop so to me it doesn't count. Everyone to their own choice, that's fine.
Or the other thing I have is Sanpellegrino with lemon, o r lime , or berries.
Diet lemonade with a fruit tea bag is another scrumptious drink..
Anymore options, ppls, U can add?7 -
OK we have enough people in the challenge now and it will be an administrative burden for me to keep you all honest. Therefore, I am now charging $25 per month to monitor the progress. Please IM me for my bank info.8

I would like to be in on the 3 month challenge. The next 3 are hard months and the challenge would be a help. Great idea!4
-
Veggiegirl I think I will make the garden, too. I have been eating a lot of salads with basil and want to do cilantro etc. So a garden would be fun. Do the chipmunks and squirrels bother the herbs, does anyone know? They are terrible here with the tomatoes when I did the tomatoes in buckets one year.3

@Norminv ~ I'm in for the 3 month challenge. What a great idea!
That will bring me to my 1st year Sober~versary….on May 29!!
Today was a beautiful SUNNY day and it made me think about the nice weather coming our way in a few months and the association between warm days and drinking/bbqs/parties etc. We can provide support for each other to continue strong through it all !!5 -

Frank Outlaw expresses this principle well:
Watch your thoughts, they become words.
Watch your words, they become actions.
Watch your actions, they become habits.
Watch your habits, they become character.
Watch your character, it becomes your destiny.
Yeah that swearing is back again. It seems to show up when under stress and not drinking. I will beat that one back, too. I believe what Frank has said. That is why when alcohol hits my head to want to drink, I have to not think on it, or dwell on it or it just keeps going until one day I will be drinking again.1 -

If I am in a bar situation or a cocktail party...My go to drinks, besides water with lemon, are Club soda and lime or an Arnold Palmer (half tea half lemonade) if they have good tea. BTW - Arnold Palmer's are usually pretty good at golf club-houses (i.e. the 19th hole) - you will have to experiment with other places.
I hate diet coke - so if I do not want to drink anything - I order one. It lasts a long time ha-ha.4
