@Ed_Zilla Craving sweets is VERY common when you stop drinking. A lot of us have had that issue. My weakness is peanut M & M's.4

While I was drinking, I rarely, if ever ate sweet things like cake, ice cream, candy, etc. I didn't want it and never cared for it. Now that I am AF, sweet things are truly AMAZING. I really have to watch it because, you know - ice cream.
I am not sure why I find sweets so delightful now. Has anyone else experienced this or a similar change in tastes when going AF?
I experienced this as well when I stopped drinking any alcohol in Jan 2018. For a few months after quitting alcohol I ate a dessert type item every day. I gained ~5 pounds over the course of the past year, but I'm still within a few pounds of my maintenance range, so I'm not worried at all and am working now on losing those 5 pounds.
I've read that craving sweet foods is very common after quitting drinking, so you definitely have lots of company!4 -
Count me in on the sugar but my alcohol site says that eating sugar actually increases cravings for alcohol, not too sure of the validity but I can't give up my sweets yet, have a great AF day all5

Thank you all for the responses...I feel better knowing that others have experienced the same sweet cravings.
Instead of stopping for ice cream after the gym this evening, I got sushi instead.5 -
Thankfully I do not have a sweet tooth but I do indulge in a treat maybe once a week. Halo ice cream is usually around 300 calories which is very doable
I also like frozen greek yogurt bars from Whole Paycheck
when i was drinking, i would avoid sugars and sweets until i was done drinking. sugar really dampened the buzz effect for me and so i did not indulge until i was done...6 -
GOOD Morn Today's blurb in my Letting Go book is about Living in the Present and it says in part, "The present moment is all we have...we can clear our mind of the residue of yesterday. We can clear our mind of the fears of tomorrow. We can be present, now! We can make ourselves available to this moment, this day. It is by being fully present now that we reach the fullness of tomorrow." Melody Beattie.
Yesterday I was thinking about some of the emotional stressors I've been dealing with lately...good ones and not so good ones and I realized that through all of this ~stuff~ that I have NOT thought of drinking AT ALL!! It just hit me yesterday that I am dealing with all this stuff...bawling my face off and releasing all the feelings instead of numbing them out & holding on to them for the next numbing out session. Such a good feeling toward this being my lifestyle. I'm not saying I'm "over it" at all. I will always need to fight to stay sober, but alcohol is beginning to loosen it's grip on me.
Hope everyone has a healthy, happy day

Yep! Me too! Never craved sugar till I went AF! It's ok, sugar doesn't turn me into a nasty A-hole...but Alcohol does. I will gladly manage my sugar calories to be a better person.10

I haven't said much lately, but I am doing Ok. Today is Day 116 AF and I generally feel terrific! However, I am fast approaching my slippery slope of the year...St. Patrick's Day season. I play drum in a bagpipe band and this is busy season for us so the weekends are filled with stops at many pubs, private parties, parades, etc. Everywhere you turn someone is handing you a pint of Guiness or a shot of Jameson's. How I have managed to tiptoe through this minefield the past few years is a mystery to me! Anyway, this will be quite a challenge as it is my first attempt at Dry St Patrick's month. I have offered up my services as designated driver to anyone in the band who wants safe rides to and from the festivities for the month. I will probably have some interesting stories to share as a result!10

Lorraine,I'm so glad you're dealing with all these emotions, no use drinking them away cuz they only pop up harder it seems,Drummer, how cool to be in such a fun band! I think offering yourself up to be the DD is a great idea it snowed yesterday here in Vegas and the school district called for a snow day today, cracks me up! Oh well there will be less traffic I guess, haven't really had any cravings for booze but have been in kind of a sad mood for no reason, maybe the weather, pms, who knows needs to GO though! Have a great AF day all!6

Today I feel happy! I had a peaceful morning - although I choose to be happy, sometimes it is hard to stay positive. And I do agree with the philosophy that living in the present moment is the key to a good satisfying life. Happy weekend friends !7

We had pasta π last night with my husbands sauce. I have been doing great with no drinking! We planned on opening a special bottle of wine. I was in a great mood and my husbands mood turned for the worst (we are human) while we were drinking wine. My attitude turned (not blaming hubby) and went into screw it attitude (not like me). I went and hit the whiskey bottle, not a good decision and opened another bottle of wine, another really bad idea. Needless to say, we fought and I was a complete jerk.
Today, I feel like crap! There is a reason why I stopped drinking and AF for me! I am disappointed in myself; however, I will step up and move forward in a positive way! πββοΈπππ
Being hungover π΅ no fun! And I didnβt workout today.... My own fault for being hungover... I am SO glad that I have been doing so well and not letting alcohol control me. Last night was a huge mistake!12 -
@Fitness327wk its a new day and you have the whole weekend to get dry again8

That was a good lesson actually. Sometimes, we think βoh what could be the harm.. have a few drinks.. i can handle it.β And then it happens- you drink. And All the terrible reasons you quit come back to you. Then, you feel badly that you ruined your streak and you were feeling so good without alcohol. Many of us (and especially me) have been there. Ouch having a hangover again is such a harsh reminder of how poisonous alcohol is to our bodies. It also reminds us how great we feel without it. So healthy, so calm....
But please, donβt fret about it too much. You have been doing so very well. Donβt let a slip up derail you. Get back on track. Forgive each other for the harsh words. I like that you said you will step up and move forward. That is the right attitude. One bad day doesnβt ruin all the positive days youβve had. Sending you a big hug. I have been there. And with each slip up, we get stronger and stronger.4 -

Ha! I assume Whole Paycheck is Whole Foods??? If it is, that is so clever and TRUE.
Halo is great , but I cant have it in the house, because i will eat the whole pint. Like I said before moderation is not my strong point.4 -

I can see why that may be so. Sugar is sugar.... and it is highly addictive. I felt sooo good in November when I cut it out for 30 days.3 -

Thank you for sharing this. We've all had these moments, but I really needed to know this morning that I was not the only one.5 -
@Fitness327wk Most of us have been there. I get argumentative as well with my husband when I have been drinking. I could not agree more with Ruby Red...we think,"Oh whats the harm in a couple? And then we remember all the reasons we wanted to quit". I cannot handle any amount of liquor anymore. Even one glass of wine will lead to that 2 am racing heartbeat. The last time that happened to me I thought I would surely die. It was beating so fast and erratically. Scary.
Thanks, Lorraine for the reminder of just live in the present and the now. That's all we really have, isn't it?
Have a great Saturday everyone. We will be doing our taxes, yuck. In the past this usually ended with a celebratory trip to the bar. Not today. Maybe the bakery for a cupcake6 -
@rubyred427 Appreciate your comments! I am back on track and heading to workout ποΈββοΈ this morning! I am going to take my lesson and grow from it and know that is NOT what I want to be. Wishing you a wonderful blessed day!

realized I didn't drink. Nice plan you have. Love the red velvet ones.5 -

It doesnβt help that your spouse drinks. Recipe for disaster or in my case divorce. I had to stop drinking and my first wife thought alcohol was the center of all social activities. We parted ways about a year after I had my last drink. 21 years ago.
My current wife does not drink.4 -
