Is Keto Worth it?

Hello! I just started Keto last Tuesday and as of today I hit a 10Ib weight loss! I am soooo stoked. Starting next week I am going to start incorporating gym activity. Thus far for me it has worked really well and I have yet to experience the "Keto Flu" because I have been making sure I replenish my electrolytes through salt and potassium. Keto is like anything, you have to be dedicated and committed. If you are looking for something short term then of course the results won't sustain but if you are looking long term with physical activity, Keto can work wonders. I have two friends who have been on it for 3mo and lost over 25Ibs each and they go to the gym as well. One went to Hawaii a month ago and enjoyed herself on vacay with food and drink and she only gained 5Ibs but lost it and then some when she went back on Keto after she returned. So if you make it a lifestyle change versus a diet with allowances now again you will be fine 😁6

There are no magical diets. Keto works great for some people, CICO works for everyone, well it is how we all lose weight. And some people prefer to count calories. Some people use different methods to follow. It really comes down to what each individual person finds the easiest to follow and they can be successful with over the long haul. No right or wrong way. And no convincing others there way is better or worse that others.
I know for me, the really low carbs, and super high fat content I personally would not follow faithfully. I easily can do 50 carbs per day but 20 not happening, even at net carbs. And the whole full fat thing um not with genetic makeup of my family. But again I have some friends been doing Keto for a year lost weight, maintaining, still on Keto and content so power to them.6 -

Drastic to me means doing a WOE that leads from health to Type 2 Diabetes.
Keto has never been a weight loss program but a WOE for people fighting a premature death due to health failure from any causes.
Please stop making unsubstantiated medical claims.10 -

It helps to dirty diet during this phase - I.E. While you're body is using up it's glycogen stores it will be -screaming- for carbs. This is where a lot of people fail, and it helps to have fatty, tasty things during this period (Bacon and Eggs w/cheese and sour cream etc..) It tickles the right centers of the brain and blunts the craving. You also go through 'keto flu' which is a day or two as your body is running its glycogen stores dry. Feel pretty wretched and craving sweet things.. then it vanishes.
hate to tell you but people like me who have familial hypercholesterolemia cannot do keto because the high amounts of fats (good or bad) does raise our cholesterol,it also didnt blunt my appetite and what I thought was keto flu was not. my health started to deteriorate(I did keto because I didnt know I had that health issue at the time).I was lethargic, couldnt form a coherent sentence. couldnt think, didnt lose any weight, had aches, pains,my arthritis was worse than it has ever been, headaches, etc. I was very close to going to the hospital because I thought I was dying,so no its not to scare people away, but to inform anyone who has the same health issue that it can be worse on your health than better. It didnt kill my cravings either. I did it for 2 months.
as soon as I stopped doing it my health started to improve again, I now feel better than I ever have eating a low fat,low cholesterol high fiber diet.so keto isnt for everyone and with my health issue if Im not proactive about it and keep it under control it can lead to type 2,TIAs, heart attack/stroke. the fat/cholesterol gets stored in my body in fat pads, xanthomas and xanthelasmas. it also has caused me to have artherosclerosis because it does clog our arteries. which could be one of the reasons for my latest heart issues but not sure. I can have fats but it has to be low amounts.less than 50g most days.11 -

I think before starting any diet, if you have any underlying health issues, you should see a Doctor first so they can advise you on a plan. I do agree with you...Keto isn't for everybody which the same can be said for any diet. For me personally, I am 11 days in on Keto and have lost 10Ibs and haven't experienced any issues. But I will be going to my Doctor and getting a physical including my lipids tested to see if Keto has adversly affected anything. I am sorry Keto didn't work out for you but if you are feeling better now, then I am thrilled for you. We must remember that everyone's body is different and reacts differently to different things. You find what works for you and in the end it all comes down to dedication and unwavering commitment.8 -

I had my doctor give me a diet. He had xeroxed sheets from the Diabetes Association. He said he could refer me to a nutritionist and some diabetes classes. I asked if he thought it would help, and he said that as close as he could tell they did not ever seem to help his patients. I said I would pass.
With metformin and following the diet he gave me very closely, my glucose readings were never under 200. I started doing some research and tried lowering carbs to 50 a day. I saw my first readings under 200. I dropped carbs to 20 a day, and glucose readings started looking pretty good. I never looked back.
So at my next appointment, I have lost weight, and my A1C is much improved. The doctor said he was not accustomed to patients actually following his advice, and he was pleased to see the progress. I told him I owed my progress really to ignoring his advice and asked him if he wanted to know what I was doing. He laughed and said, "No, just keep doing it."
After the doctor left, the nurse said, "I'd like you to tell me what you are doing." I told her, and she said she wished I would talk to her husband.5 -

I couldnt go to a dr beacause my health issue was not diagnosed yet. they thought it was just high cholesterol until they did further testing which was after I did keto. there was no way to know that it would do what it did to me or cause me any issues.but I want others to know that this can be dangerous for some so if they arent sure if their cholesterol is due to familial hypercholesterolemia they need to be tested further to see. for healthy people with no cholesterol issues it probably would be fine. but this way maybe if someone has some of the same issues I do then they can stop doing keto and see if thats the cause too.

keto does help those with insulin and diabetes though, its not the only way but it is one one to lower those things and improve them1 -
I am 10days in - I hate it sofar - I am hungry and week.
It is one of the most complex diets to get right.
I do like the idea but has caused some people to collapse faint end up in hostpital on an iv.
Easier is counting just calories for me.
Keto is
Adapting - count macros that’s 75% fat, 20% protein and 5% carbs then after adaption if your not loosing weight you have to count calories!!!
If your not feeling well - “Keto flu”
Your bound to be doing something wrong. Most will tell you electrolytes are missing and your dehydrating. Because it drains you in the process.
Also I find that. it enough this is put on not eating sugar making sure sugar and carbs are low in everything you eat.
My bonuses - I was able to get off high PB pills within 3 days of not eating sugar and bread, pastry - keto style, after 10 days I still am working on getting the macros right and adding my own recipe for electrolytes.

I think you think Keto is about loosing weight. It's about your bonuses you mentioned.
As keto helped my health issues that were leading towards my premature death I did go on to loose 50 pounds that has stayed off for over 3 years now eating around 3000 calories daily so I never go hungry.
Keto is giving me a another chance at life at age 67.
Look at your bonuses and eating when you get hungry. I found to go hungry to lose weight to not work and it was self abuse in my case.
Best regards as you learn your way forward.16 -
I lost 68 pounds on Keto since March. Worth it for me.5

If you don't have a medical condition, weight issue is BEHAVIORAL rather than diet based. Countries that don't have obesity problems are moderate eaters. That's where the behavior needs to be rather than what fad diet you should do.

@cerise_noir sorry about your parents I know I wish I knew about Keto the way I do today before my parents died of CHF in 1994 and breast cancer in 1999 when each were only 72. Actually, I read it and as far as the cancer link goes it is very much inconclusive with many mixed results. As quoted from the article:
"Interestingly, mice fed a restricted standard diet displayed the same beneficial outcomes as mice fed the restricted ketogenic diet...these results cast doubt on whether the positive effects were mediated by carbohydrate or caloric restriction"
pssstt ... studies on humans have actually shown that a diet low in fat is most effective in slowing the growth of breast cancer cells so keto would not have helped your mother in the slightest.
Simply put, there has not been enough research conducted with human trials to be able to come to the conclusion that keto can help with cancer treatment and absolutely none that suggests that keto will prevent cancer in the first place. Studies on mice show promising results in the treatment of some cancers when keto is used in conjunction with other treatment but that keto can do the opposite with others. It also needs to be remembered that humans are not mice and it is not uncommon for studies showing positive results on mice to not translate to the same results when done with humans.
The only thing that keto has been proven to help with are neurological disorders.14 -
Well I was thinking of trying it too. The thing is if you bloat easily then i think it would be beneficial7

Keto has never been a weight loss program but a WOE for people fighting a premature death due to health failure from any causes. For me it is pain manage first of all then to try and prevent cataracts, heart disease and cancer but not necessarily in that order.
Prevents heart disease and cancer? Any legit sources to back this up? Gee, I wish I could have told my mom and dad about keto before they died..........

@cerise_noir sorry about your parents I know I wish I knew about Keto the way I do today before my parents died of CHF in 1994 and breast cancer in 1999 when each were only 72. The good news for us today we know so much more about the positive health impact from Keto WOE's and now we all can share this with our families.

Do you seriously believe that? That your parents would have lived longer simply by eating keto? That keto is the be all and end all of preventing or curing every medical illness? I'd suggest you step away from Fung et al and start looking at what peer-reviewed science says instead because if people that are gullible enough to believe what you write you could be causing them long-term damage.

It can but, for the most part, the best-proven treatment for type 2 diabetes is to reduce your weight and increase your exercise. Many have had the same results for managing diabetes on much higher carb and lower fat diets. Some even see great success with a standard vegan diet. If keto was the best, or only treatment it would be the most recommended one by diabetes organisations around the world.12 -

In my case Keto sure reduced my weight and enabled me to increase my exercise due to my pain relief and 30 years of IBS resolving. BG fasting levels went into the non diabetic range thankfully.16 -
It was hard for a week. you get used to it, but i wont do it long term. If you like a drink or two or three at night, keto is great (depending on the choice of drink) , if not, it will work but counting calories is better.1

All due to weight loss. You have zero evidence otherwise
Spouting keto aa a cure all is unfounded, and frankly, irresponsible.
Please stop16 -

Please stop making unsubstantiated medical claims.
What do you see as the least common denominator cause of premature death due due to health failure?
I don't see carbohydrates anywhere on that list
Do you plan to answer the question I asked you?
Do you plan to stop trying to shift the burden of proof? Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and preliminary rat studies with equivocal results don't qualify8
